I worked with Karen to create a trust. The whole process was efficient, easy to understand, and thorough. She and her team listened to my needs and we got it right the first time, without any need for significant changes. I also learned about (and implemented) some planning directives I wasn't previously familiar with, such as the Advance Directive for Dementia. Overall this was a great experience, even though it can involve some difficult choices.

Karen Dawson is excellent to work with. Her preplanning materials for our wills and trust were easy to fill out. We have put this off for years believing it was going to be super complex but she made it easy. She was also very patient through my endless questions and she asked us questions to clarify our thinking. Her final package was thorough and gave us a step-by-step of next actions. We could not have done this without her. We highly recommend her for wills and trusts.

Karen is wonderful to work with. She clearly explains the process and laws of estate planning in Oregon, especially since it is unfamiliar territory for us. She is thorough and offers council when we needed specific guidance, but never directly told us what decision we should make, especially in regards to end of life care and decisions. We hired her specifically for estate planning, writing our wills, and establishing trusts. It can be a very daunting task, since we have never had to face the reality of planning for the future after our deaths, but Karen's process is very smooth and reassuring. We enjoyed working with Karen's calming demeanor and vast knowledge of the law surrounding trusts and estate planning. We highly recommend her!

I was very pleased with Jennifer’s professionalism and willingness to listen to what I had to say. I hired Jennifer to help me as my ex was unwilling to disclose what was happening to funds set aside specifically for my children. Unlike the lawyer I hired for my divorce, or other subsequent lawyers who disbelieved what I had to say about what was happening, or the irrational actions of my ex, Jennifer listened and was able to work with me to resolve the situation. I felt confident in her advise and she was always willing to explain things in a manner I was able to understand. More importantly, she listened when I disagreed and didn’t try to pressure my decisions (giving me time to work through my emotional reluctance, at times, so that I could make rational decisions regarding the case and which moved the case forward). I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone in need of a lawyer with regards to family law.

Jennifer was absolutely phenomenal with my case. I was/am dealing with a very narcissistic ex husband and Jennifer was calm, cool and collected while dealing with him and my custody case. She was very to the point with him and extremely helpful to me. She understood that I am a single mother with a single income, she was conscious of the fact that I didn’t have an endless amount of money. Jennifer would tell me all of the options that there were and we would discuss which route was best and she cared about my input. She cared about me and my daughter! I would call or email Jennifer with questions or concerns and I thought I was bothering her so I apologized (all the time!) and she reassured me that I am not a bother. I would recommend Jennifer to anyone dealing with divorce/custody issues. I will hire Jennifer in the future if I need further assistance. I just can’t say enough good things about Jennifer!

I could not have been happier with the service I received from Larry. I really appreciate his calm, level-headed demeanor. For someone such as myself that does not deal with Lawyer's and conflict everyday it can be intimidating and stressful when you find yourself in a position of having to hire an attorney. Larry was excellent at talking to me calmly through the whole thing and explaining what to expect. My case ended up settling prior to trial and Larry was great at going through the difference scenario options I had and was instrumental in helping me make my final decision. I couldn't give Larry a higher recommendation.

We have consulted with Ed and have found him and his staff to always be very professional and knowledgeable. Edward was very informative from the start, he told me what to focus on and the 4 or 5 things that I needed to pay close attention to. This allowed me to sleep well at night knowing that he would take care of the business at hand. He seemed to work well with the opposing counsel and was very fair and reasonable . Edward was always accessible and quick to return calls and kept me most informed all along the way. In a divorce there is never a good senario, no one wins, hopefully you can go on respectfully about your life and I feel Ed and his team was very concerned about the personal affect of all involved. I would absolutely recommend Edward Lohman and his team to anyone looking for legal assistance. He was very knowledgable, informative and someone I can trust with my business and I would look to him for any legal help I may need in the future.

My family was in a car accident last Summer. My husband, my son, and I were injured. Nothing major that required hospitalization or surgery, but enough to cause significant pain. Because the damage to our vehicle was minor,we had a hard time finding an attorney to help. We were hit by an uninsured motorist, and Oregon's PIP laws were difficult for us to manage. He took our seemingly small case, and allowed us to get the treatment we needed. I will forever be grateful for the time he took for us, and how successful he was in settling despite insurance issues.

Eric & staff spent the necessary time explaining my options, these law suits take time & money. If I hadn't had them working on my behalf, I'd have never understood how complicated a process it is for a laymen. They filed all the paper work, they handled everything timely & educated me along the way. Eric spent the firms money on operating costs. I kept a log of all my out of pocket expenses & tallied all medical costs which, thanks to Eric & his staff, was reimbursed when we 'settled'. Eric Tait is a family man who values his clients. He listens, reacts with expert knowledge in his field of expertise. More importantly, I trust him to be fair. My outcome was as good as we could have hoped for. Personal injuries from an accident are emotional, painful, & never have a simple recovery or solution. My only regret is that I didn't see him sooner! Considering trying to go through the process alone would have been an absolute impossibility, especially with the 'other' insurance company calling & wanting you to 'settle' ; even before a proper diagnosis from an orthopedic specialist. Beware injured one, don't fall into the snare of the 'other' insurance company, they are a wolf in disguise! My injury was complex. My shoulder was severely injured. It took three opinions before I found the surgeon who could help me, (who only worked on shoulders.). There is a time-line from the date of your injury... So DON'T WAIT to have a specialist like Eric Tait help you with your health issues and your quality of life. He was amazing to work with, once we established his role, I then understood Mine. Knowledge is power & knowing how the system of personal injury works was a blessing to me. There were many times during my recovery that had I not understood the process, I would have not gotten the proper care I deserved. Good luck* to you.

Melissa Chureau expertly addressed communication from opposing counsel in defense of our company in a timely fashion. She was sensitive to the financial restraints of our company when deciding on a particular course of action. She demonstrated an outstanding ability to remain focused and on topic during 8 straight hours of difficult depositions for two days in a row. Melissa was able to explain the legal process to me, someone with no prior experience with lawsuits and courts, in a way that was easy to understand. She portrayed confidence and professionalism while dealing with opposing counsel under difficult circumstances. I highly recommend Melissa Chureau as a litigation specialist.

Bruce recently represented me in an Adjudication SSDI trial. It was my second to last chance to receive approval to receive my SSDI benefits. He has knowledge and 20+ years experience with all the SSDI judges in Portland. He was able to tell me about the judge we were about to meet, what his personality was like, and most importantly, the Judges likes and dislikes in his courtroom from the folks he is facing, like me. I had a strong case, but had been denied my SSDI benefits 3 times in 22 months,, (standard protocal here, folks), and had to appear for a final decision. One hour before the trial, Bruce was magnificant at making sure I handeled the trial "correctly". He told me exactly how it would go, (he was right on the money), He told me exactly what questions he was going to ask me when it was his time to depose me, after the judge was done with his questioning of me. He also knew within minutes of talking to me that I was a nervous wreck and quite "pissed off", as he put it. He managed to pull me off the ceiling and prepare me for was what to come in just a short 45 minutes from that moment. I did what Bruce asked of me. He told me afterward, that I was a completly different person in the courtroom and that I did so well, he genuinly believed that we would win my case. He knew our Judge, which helped immensly. Seems all the judges there do, and all we ran into were so happy to see him. I received my outcome within 4 days! Not the 60'ish days that is quoted by the Social Security Administration. I even had my retro-paycheck with the following week! Our judge knew I he was foing to approve me about 1/2 way throught the houe we spent in there. We could both see it on his face and by his questions and comments to me. Bruce told me my trial went amazingly well, which I responded...."Thanks to your perfect coaching of how my behavior needed to be in the courtroom" . Again, my case was strong, a huge file with lot's of MRI's and tests and 2 years of Doctor visit reports. Bruce was there all the way through, doing the intracacies of filing an SSDI case. But, when it comes ro SSDI cases, there is no need to "need" your lawyer during the red tapee bullshit that goes on throughout the wait, he tells you what to do and gathers all your records for you, and gets them to the proper place in a most timely fashion. Bruce mattered when he sat next to me before and in that courtroom, which is where WE won my case. Don't try and find anyone else. This dude has it all, from following the rules like no layman can to get everything you will need to everywhere it has to go, to appearing at court time as a professional with a "smack" of inside track knowledge. That is who you want representing you. A real human being, not a sruffed-shirt who won't look you in the eye. Someone who has been around the block LOCALLY for so many years. The relationships he has forged with all the right people have given him insight that he can share with you to insure you get a fair shake. If this gentleman can't do it, then, no one can.

Nathan Goin was outstanding! Me and my wife went to see him for a consultation and after speaking with him for just a few minutes, we knew we wanted him to represent us. My case involved a lot of lost time, medical expenses and the possible loss of a career. Things got rough for a moment and his advice came from the point of view of what’s best for my family and career, but then he successfully negotiated not only an extremely fair and healthy settlement for my situation, but was able to keep my licensing and education relevant for future employment endeavors also. His staff is attentive to your questions and concerns and they walk you through the whole process kindly with patience and integrity. I hope to never get hurt again, but if that’s my fate, I know who to call! 6 stars because they’re just that good!

When I opted to call Dave about a real estate transaction that I was being sued over, I never knew how fortunate I was in making that call. What should have been an easy matter to resolve turned into a 2.5 year battle - all because of the unprofessional behavior of the opposing council. I knew very little about the civil litigation process and statutes that govern them. Dave was very patient with me and made sure I understood along the way what to expect and the options I had at each decision point. In this way, he was a coach and trusted teammate. I could always depend on Dave to communicate quickly and openly everything that was going on between him and the opposing counsel. When I would ask for his opinion I could expect a calming voice on the phone often talking me off the ledge as I would catastrophize the situation. His advice was invaluable. These were the “soft” skills that Dave brings to the practice. Things that maybe you wouldn’t consider in choosing a lawyer. He presents himself as the neighbor next door and has a wide range of contacts and resources to draw upon. In addition to his personal style, Dave is an excellent lawyer and his years of experience shine in his knowledge of the law and the steps that need to be taken at each point in the case. In the end, we won the case without having to go to trial. But I had total confidence that if we would have gone to trial, we would have prevailed because of Dave’s preparation and full understanding of the case and the approach he would have taken. What could have turned into a financially ruinous situation for me turned into a windfall with a partial return of money that I had spent defending myself. DO NOT HESITATE TO MAKE THE CALL if you find yourself in need of a responsible lawyer that you can trust and depend on to represent you fairly and when necessary aggressively.

I started my divorce in 2018 while the divorce was finalized there were many ups and down with my ex. Kristin was ideal with helping my navigate through this as well as keeping our children out of it. Through the years she has dealt with my multiple emails, phone calls, counselors, PC, reunification therapists, the ex, his attorney with SO many people involved in this case you would think she could possibly “drop the ball”. Well she didn’t. She does her best to point out when you yourself may be wrong. (Which makes a good attorney) She tells you to always “take the high road”. Which we all know is difficult when dealing with a divorce. If it weren’t for her guidance, honesty, expertise, years of experience, excellent staff to assist her. My children and I wouldn’t have got the outcome we got. Come court date she had ALL things in order, super organized and went down a checklist of facts. I knew then the other side should be worried that she came prepared to win! I would highly recommend her to anyone. And would use her again if needed.

Kristin was hired in my divorce case with an abusive husband and father. I’m not entirely sure what she did on her part as I’m the one who did all paperwork and gathering of discovery. She was routinely rude and unbelievably unorganized and did not address extremely crucial issues that affected my 3 kids IMO. I could share a whole lot more but I won’t , needless to say I wholeheartedly DO NOT recommend this attorney. Be wary.

I use lawyers for my businesses every year so I am familiar with many of the industry norms. I am 5 years into a challenging co-parenting situation and another issue arose recently. I contacted Kristin Eaton via her firms website and scheduled a meeting after hearing back from her paralegal. Great I thought. The day of the consult, the paralegal email to say, "Can't do a 1/2 hour free consult - you have to pay for 1 hour" - I said, ok. I value my time and understand she wants to be compensated for hers. I drove 40 minutes to her office for the 1 pm appointment. When I arrived, the paralegal came out and said Kristin can't meet me today, she is too busy - I need to schedule out in 2 weeks. Ouch - what a waste of my time.

Basic attorney, to answer questions you can go to Scott. If you’re looking for someone to fight hard for you I would recommend looking else where. I was referred to him by modest means and was told I wouldn’t be charged more then 60$ a hour but was charged 100$ a hour when his regular rate is only $50 more. When I came to Scott I came with concerns about custody he told me for the time being i should try to modify our current plan. I had him on my case for around 6 months. Scott really didn’t do anything for me except answer some questions and communicate with opposing parties attorney. When it was 2 weeks before our hearing he told me he was ready to fight. Scott told me we would file to see another judge if they were considerate of everything. Just days before our hearing he said he wasn’t sure if I should go through with trying to modify and there was a big chance I wouldn’t get what I was asking for. At trial the judge asked if he had even listened to our entire transcript of previous hearings and he said NO. In the months he had to prepare and fight he didn’t even sit down and listen to the transcript to fully understand everything that had previously happen in my case! I did not get what I was asking for and Scott did not fight hard or bring up in substantial things that had happen in my case since the previous hearing. I was upset and expressed that and expressed what I believed he should have brought up. Scott told me the things I referred to were only going to matter in a custody change but all along Scott told me I didn’t have anything for a custody change. i spent 1700 to have him communicate with another attorney and file for a hearing. I could have gotten advice and saved my money and filed what he did if I knew he wasn’t going to go hard against opposing party or even listen to our transcript to understand our case. Ontop of everything I never met Scott In person or even over video. The first time I saw him was at court and he did not even know who I was , I had to introduce myself. He has no office to meet at and many times his children were in the background of the phone calls i had with him. Overall not happy with my outcome of my case and all my wasted time and money.

I used Stewart Martin for a standard Contract. I was surprised at the poor quality of contract I received. My previous, lawyer, who had retired, had prepared the same contracts for me, so I knew what they should look like. I would recommend strongly finding another lawyer who is knowledgeable.

Please consider my experience before hiring Lisa K. Day. She is very inexperienced, misguided me on numerous occasions, drew out my legal process way too long, cost me tens of thousands of dollars due to her mistakes and lack of experience. She overlooked many details of my case which ended up affecting the outcome. She raised the eyebrows of bankers, other attorneys, businesses and more. I strongly encourage anyone that is considering her to represent them and/or draft documents to be advised of her extremely low level of competence.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
