While I haven't yet hired Mr. Siegel, from my initial phone call, he seems knowledgeable and dedicated towards his clients' best interests. After all he advised me to not file for bankruptcy now, which won't generate any revenue for him. He also said I could call back later with questions, and I won't be charged until I actually file through him. So my impression is that he is a great guy.

She handled my divorce. This is one of the best divorce lawyers in Chicago. She is understanding, professional and very responsive. She met with me on weekends when my work schedule did not allow for weekday meetings. She approached every aspect with compassion and understanding. I would recommend her to anyone going thru this hard process.

Stavros Law Offices provided me with nothing but incredible service, and affordable pricing. They communicated often and clearly, and were extremely friendly throughout the entirety of my case. Stavros blows any other providers out of the water. I will not be using any other law firm, should I need one in the future. I cannot recommend them enough!

Words cannot describe the professionalism I experience with the law office of Steve. You will never be in the dark about any concerns and for the most part Steve is always a couple steps ahead of the questions or concerns you may have. He never assume you may agree with his ideas. He always gives you his honest truth, but the final say so is up to you. You will never be blindsided by his work. Steve to me has raised the bar on knowledge and professionalism. I give him and his firm an 12 on a scale from 1-10. Lamont Bryant

I worked with Michael Kern over the past few years to help my partner immigrate to America. Throughout the entire process, Michael was very easy to work with. He was there to guide us through all of the necessary steps, and always was able to quickly answer any additional questions we had. Throughout the entire process, from initial filing to the final approval, we followed his advice, and every single step went smoothly without any mishaps. I would highly recommend Michael to anyone looking for help with immigration matters.

My husband and I have had the pleasure to work with Micheal for almost 10 years. Our immigration case was not easy and there were constant battles with the immigration office. Michael was always right there working very hard, making sure all the papers were filled out correctly, emailing us back even in the early hours of the morning to make sure we were able to get our end result. There were times that we didn’t see the end of our case, but Michael always reassured us that everything will be ok and we will get the result we have been waiting for and we seriously did. If anyone ever asks for an immigration lawyer we will always recommend Michael. Thank you for all that you did for us Michael.

Mr. Goldman is the most thorough and professional attorney myself and many friends and family have done business with, having his representation. Through the years, unexpected and sometimes life-altering, situations may arrise and that's a scary, horrible feeling. Steve tells you like it is and exactly what he can do for you, no false expectations. He has incredible know how and confidence. I have, and would again, trust Steve with any case or situation. He is definitely the best attorney I've worked with and always will.

I paid him 19,000 dollars in January of 2018. He withdrew from my case in June of 2018 after making only four court appearances. He did not refund me any money, yet he only filed one motion. That motion was a motion to withdraw, filed by an associate, in June of 2018. He did not give me a reasonable notice in serving me the withdraw notice. His partner gave me the notice less than an hour before my criminal case was heard. This is likely a breach of ethical rules for Illinois lawyers.

ALTHOUGH I HIRED THIS ATTORNEY 15 YEARS AGO AND MAYBE HIS PRACTICES HAVE CHANGED, I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND HIM. IN ADDITION TO CHARGING $1000 PER COURT APPERANCE (DONT KNOW WHAT HE CHARGES NOW), HE BLATANTLY MISINFORMED ME ABOUT THE POTENTIAL JUDGEMENT IN THE CASE WHICH WOULDVE LANDED ME IN COUNTY PRISON FOR A YEAR. OF COURSE I WASNT AWARE THIS COULDVE BEEN THE OUTCOME UNTIL THE JUDGE WAS HANDING DOWN THE SENTENCE RIGHT THERE AND THEN. HE LATER GOT HIM TO RESCIND BY BEGGING THE JUDGE FOR A LESSER SENTENCE (240 COMMUNITY SERVICE HRS) FOR A SCUFFLE THAT LASTED ABOUT 7 SECONDS, NO WEAPONS INVOLVED. HE DIDNT EVEN GET THE CHARACTER WITNESSES PREPARED. HE TOLD ME TO CALL THE WITNESSES MYSELF A 1/2 HOUR BEFORE MY HEARING AT THE COURT HOUSE!! WHEN APPLYING FOR JOBS I ASKED IF MY CONVICTION WAS ON RECORD AND WHAT I SHOULD PUT ON THE APPLICATION, HE FAILED TO TELL ME WHEN MY RECORDS WOULD BE EXPUNGED LEADING TO ERRONEOUS LIES ON MY JOB APPLICATION THAT SINGLE HANDEDLY COST ME ONE JOB 1 WEEK AFTER BEING HIRED. PLENTY OF OTHER ATTORNEYS OUT THERE, GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE

Robert Feldman is the most inept lawyer possible. He did not even listen or get my side of the incident before talking to the Prosecution and accepted all of their demands without consulting me or letting me know what their report of the incident was. The incident report was inaccurate and I was never given the chance to give my side of the incident and see it before Robert Feldman agreed with all the Prosecution demands. He just came back to me after talking to the Prosecution and said "this is the deal." Basically saying "take it" without any knowledge by me what they were saying in the incident report. I had to find out what was in the report when the Prosecution read it to the judge AFTER the agreed Plea Deal. They also brought up an arrest from 9 years ago. I was never given any chance to tell my side of the incident or comment on the arrest. Robert Feldman never warned me or showed me the incident report and just stood there silent the whole time never instructing his client or given me my right to a fair hearing of the incident report against me. He should of done his job and asked me if I wanted to say anything or if the report was correct and asked for a short break since I was blindsided and given me a chance to respond. I was caught off guard and they then went ahead with the decision and never asked Robert Feldman or myself if I had anything to say. Here is my story of the incident: I'm driving down the road at the speed limit of 40mph when I see a car ahead of me waiting to make a right turn. All of a sudden they pull in front of me, so I take my foot off the gas pedal and coast. I'm getting closer and ready to use my break to slow down. All of a sudden the car slams on it's breaks to a complete stop from 40mpg to zero. There was no reason at all for that since no one else was on the road and the only reason was to cause me to hit them. I was shocked since I have never seen or heard of this before except someone doing it on purpose to collect insurance money. After stopping I pulled around to the left lane of the two lane road to see who this person was. The first thing I see is thing large blond woman given me the finger like it was my fault. I was not even that close to her since she was pulling ahead of me when I got closer to her. I could not believe this reaction so I pulled ahead to the right and got out of my car and said "what are you doing? Why did you do that?" She kept saying loudly "what are you going to do about it, what are you going to do about it?" I was in shock and I admit I took her sunglasses off her face and then gently tossed it underhand back at her. That is the Battery charge and nothing else. I never got the chance to dispute her false claims in the incident report and tell the entire story. According to the incident report it was stated that I chased her down cut her off for no reason and swore at her and threw her sunglasses at her. This makes me look like a crazy driver who went after someone for no reason. I was pleading guilty for taking the sunglasses off her face but was never able to read her incident report before Robert Feldman went to talk to the Prosecution and her. Why was I not informed in the conversation beforehand or right after? What is the point of having a lawyer. This is his ONLY job. He failed miserably and something minor turned into a major cause. I got Anger Management classes, One year probation, I had to call them if I left the state for one year, like I was a major criminal, I had to see the Probation Officer for one year every other month or so and pay anywhere from $240-$600 to them. Anger Management classes cost $600. Oh yes, and I got a conviction on my record on top of that for Battery. Now, what exactly did Robert Feldman do for me except royally screw me over and collect his lawyer fee for being a pathetic human being and a embarrassment to his profession?

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
