i was given this attorney as a Court Appointed Lawyer. I was wanted for 3 years in Cuyahoga County Ohio *Cleveland and i was living in Las Vegas (Ohio refused to extradite). It was hard to have a block on my license for such petty offenses. I had judge Eileen Gallagher back in 2008 who after many probation violations sent me to prison. I was given a Judicial and still owed 9 months. I stole a car in the meantime which my prints were found on and later on (in Vegas) found out i was also charged with felony 4 RSP MV and F5 criminal tools for a screwdriver I had left in the car. Luckily my original judge was no longer on the bench. She had luckily been replaced When I first contacted his office from the card is was given by the bailiff his secretary gave me his cell phone # to call and was able (with a jail phone card) called him directly. I first told him I want NO BULLPEN THERAPY.(waking you up at 5am and making you sit for hours in a cell and not even going to court) and I also told him I would like to do everything at once. No waiting for sentencing after PLEA. He visited me and asked what I wanted to to. I said to have the new cases run concurrent with the 9 months I owe from the previous case. He said "that's what I thought you would say". Got up and said," we are going to try for 6 months instead"..So already I liked the guy. He was not a public defender but a court appointed Lawyer (holds own practice not affiliated with public defender helping out the PD load. More experienced. I was arrested September 22 and I went to Pretrial on the October 12 which is so fast its unheard of. Comes into the room and says "Well here is the deal", I got the 6 months. Judge didn't really care the the prosecutor says he doesn't give $hi+. Now we can argue to reinstate your 3 year old Probation (keep in mind the court already knew I had been to prison multiple times, including NEVADA, with a terrible Juvenile Record), which is not happening, Or your take the miracle sentence of 6 months they are offering" JUMPED ON IT In court, he was very informal and professional. I will never forget how he made the judge feel like I had it rough, but hes like "Judge We normally don't send kids to prison for possession of under 1 gram cocaine" (which was my first case and after 2 probation mess ups i went to prison), the judge shook his head in agreement. "And we usually don't send kids to prison Joyriding in stolen cars". Same thing judge looked as he was right. "He understands he has a record and needs to pay a price but we feel a small but firm prison sentence of 6 months is fair" He EVEN HAD ME convinced I was an angel who ran into bad luck ^__^ Perfect Manipulation Skills (ACTUAL DOCKET ENTRY) DEFENDANT IN COURT WITH COUNSEL CHARLES K WEBSTER. PROSECUTING ATTORNEY ED BRYDLE PRESENT. COURT REPORTER PRESENT.ON RECOMMENDATION OF PROSECUTOR; COUNT 1 IS AMENDED TO ATTEMPTED, RSP F5. DEFENDANT PLEADS GUILTY TO ATT RSP F5 AS AMENDED IN COUNT 1 OF THE INDICTMENT. COUNT 2 DISMISSED. COURT ACCEPTS DEFENDANT'S PLEA. THE COURT IMPOSES A PRISON SENTENCE OF 6 MONTHS. COSTS WAIVED FINES WAIVED. CASE 06-484843 IS TERMINATED. DEFENDANT REMANDED. SHERIFF ORDERED TO TRANSPORT TO ODRC DEFENDANT; SO I COULD OF RECEIVED THE 9 PLUS ADDITIONAL 18 MONTHS FOR THE F4 AND UP TO 12 MONTHS FOR THE F5 ,BOTH PLEA AND SENTENCING HEARINGS ALL AT ONCE, WOULD KEEP MY FAMILY INFORMED. AND SO PROFESSIONAL HE TREATED ME LIKE A PAID CLIENT BOTTOM LINE BEING PAID WELL UNDER RETAINER AND CONDUCTING HIMSELF JUST AS PROFESSIONAL , I WONDER HOW GOOD HE IS PAID. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I THOUGHT IT IMPOSSIBLE TO GET LESS THAN 1 YEAR. HE MANAGED TO MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE. IVE HAD ATTY'S CHARGE ME 3 GRAND, AND DO MUCH LESS THAN HIM FOR A COURT PAYMENT OF A COUPLE HUNDRED. HE IS WORTH EVERY BIT OF HIS RETAINER. IN FACT, I'D BETTER GET A PRO BONO ON THE HOUSE FOR THIS REVIEW. IVE HAD 20 DIFFERENT ATTORNEY'S, HE WAS MY FAVORITE. #1 CHOICE FOR CLEVELANDERS 100%

I've been working with my attorney, Jay crook at the law offices of Shryock, Crook and associates since 2008. In that time they have helped me with countless business dealings and disputes, as well as The state issues when I lost a family member. If you're looking for an attorney, here's what I'll tell you. Spending $600 an hour for a attorney in the tallest building downtown is a complete waste of money. Nearly the same skill set if not more exist in attorneys all over the state. The difference is, my attorneys overhead is minuscule compared to someone who takes an entire floor of the key Bank building. Sure, there are times when a scary law firm's name on a suit or a response helps but less than you think. I have complete confidence in the attorneys that this law firm and I've never had to worry about their expertise bankrupting me. These are people like you and me, who happened to be attorneys and are very good at what they do. Regardless of what you're looking for, criminal, business, contract, probate, family law give these guys a call and judge for yourself. I think you'll be glad that you did.

I recommended Pam Kurt to a friend who was going through some serious legal issues. She needed good solid advise. She also needed to have someone who would look out for her. Pam Kurt handled everything with professionalism and kindness. During the most stressful times of the proceedings my friend told me that Pam was always there to help her navigate all of the tough decisions. Pam is a hard working, knowledgeable Lawyer.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
