Jason is a friend from church. When I approached him for advice about a claim from an auto accident that left me with permanent injuries, the time for filing the claim had nearly expired. Jason began to work for me immediately. He made every effort to settle the claim through mediation, experiencing the same frustration I had experienced with the insurer. Jason was marvelous throughout the trial. He prepared each witness extremely well, presented a well documented and thorough case, and gave keen attention to details. The jury award was substantially higher than mediation would have rendered. Now I consult Jason regularly, fully trusting him with my family law business including divorce, will, and matters of estate. Jason is a hard worker, always prepared, ethical and fair.

Jason Page has represented me for the past year in a case which involved a piece of longleaf timberland I own in eastern North Carolina. Someone impersonated me and sold my timber to a local forest products company. Jason Page helped me recover my damages from the insurance firm representing the timber company. My mediation was completed in January 2012. I was extremely satisfied with his help on all levels. He was available and responsive through emails and telephone calls and always kept me in the loop with regards to papers that he filed and developments in my case. His background of working in timber before becoming a lawyer made him especially valuable in my case…volumes, pricing, optimal merchandising of a timber tract…all are a bit obscure if you are not in the timber world. But in a broader sense, this is a person who I would use for any legal matter that he is willing to take on. His honesty, prompt attention to detail, and full involvement with the case at hand all commend him. With more lawyers like Jason Page, the public impression of the profession would get a big boost.

We have found Jason to be attentive, reliable, hard-working, conscientious, honest, knowledgeable and helpful. Jason takes the time to really listen, and understand your situation, explains the options, then sets about to take care of you and resolve the matter at hand. We are currently in a Real Estate dispute. We are very comfortable in recommending Jason, have numerous times, and will use him again ourselves in the future.

He was court appointed to me in a serious case. If found guilty it would have been hard to ever continue within my career. He fought for me and got the charges dropped to a misdemeanor. He knows what he's doing and he's good at it.

Tom handled my DUI and accompanying sleu of succeeding Driving While Licensed Revoked Charges some time ago. In small Eastern North Carolina towns like Wilson, the highest aspiration of the police is to file such traffic charges. As if that isn't enough, the local newspapers deem such arrests newsworthy. Not that I'm bitter. Anyway, Tom got my DUI reduced or thrown out, reduced the Revoked License charges to nominal fines, and I was able to immediately thereafter get the hell out of Wilson to a place where you've at least got a sporting chance of driving safely home from your neighborhood watering hole without certain arrest. Tom is a good lawyer and a good man, and I recommend him without reservation.

Ben was very helpful in settling a dispute concerning an agreement to purchase shares in a corporation. While other attorneys I contacted were hesitant to take on this case, Ben was willing to do the research, get depositions, and represent me in a professional manner. He did a fine job obtaining positive results. I would highly recommend him.

Even though it took some time ( because my case was a bit unique) Mr. Taylor and his staff got the job done. He said he was going to get my husband and I compensation AND HE DID! It was worth the wait! Would I recommend this office? Absolutely! He settled my case back in September and I forgot to write a review but I appreciate everything he and his staff did for us. Thank you Mr. Taylor for not giving up and keeping your word. God bless you and your staff thru this holiday season and into the new year! *LaTonya

I was told I was being given a plea agreement and yes they did dismiss one of the charges, he told me to expect only fines and unsupervised probation! He used to be a great attorney, so I trusted what he told me. Upon entering court he hadn’t even looked up to see what level offender I was and if unsupervised probation was an option for an offender that had been in trouble many years ago for a lot of things. All which had been resolved! So o walked out of court that day with outrageous strict supervision of probation fees that were never explained to me, he told me at time he was hired my case would be dismissed, that was never brought up again. If I had it to do over I would have appealed and also told the judge I was not happy with his services. As an attorney you can’t assume what might happen, you need to communicate with the district attorney and look your clients record up before making promises a judge cannot keep. He didn’t even go into detail with judge to get me in the mitigated range for sentencing which I had provided all documentation for! Like I said used to be great but now I would sell everything I own and hire someone else! He just told me what I wanted to hear! Not the truth! I seemed to be more aware of what was going to happen or could than him yet he promised me I would be sentenced to one thing and by far I got crucified by the judge and no I don’t blame him it’s called stricter sentencing for a reason. It takes five minutes to find someone’s offender level! Maybe less!!

He is very well versed in many areas of the law in this country; I believe he mainly handles criminal cases.. however I'm sure he is the future "GOAT" of Wilson Co. Lawyers. He promptly knew how to handle my case, and he was appointed, and told me to plead not guilty. (Which I wasn't.) It just shows he knows his stuff, and was going to get my case handled in my favor for free!!

I have left several messages for a call back with not one response. My husband is jail with a extremely high bond and she was court appointed to him. I've called several times and left several messages and a week later she still has not bothered to call back. My husband is 63 yrs old and is dying and needs his medicine. We as his family have tried reaching out for assistance getting his bond lowered or unsecured so he can continue his treatments. It is because she's court appointed that's stopping her from her responsibility of doing her best by her client. If I had the money I would fire her and obtain a lawyer that is willing to due what's in the best interest of their client. We are very unsatisfied and extremely disappointed in her ability to perform as a productive attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
