Attorney Rioles helped me through a life event that totally upended my world, namely, divorce. Now such a thing is common in the human experience but when it happens to you a lot of confusion and loss of clarity in one's life can enter in. Without having a good support and counsel around, too many missteps could enter in to worsen an already bad situation. Looking back now, I am glad that I reached out to Attorney Rioles, although; I should have done so sooner. I initially opted for the short in-person consultation to see if she could help me make sense of it all. She was very thorough and clear as to what I could expect in the divorce process. She had no problem answering each question I had. At times I felt like maybe I shouldn't ask too many questions because it seemed later in the afternoon, however she was calm throughout and was genuinely wanting to help me through. At the end of the consultation, I told her that I would need time to think about proceeding officially and filing the necessary paperwork in a few months. She confirmed that she would be ready when I was ready. No sales pressure whatsoever. (I want to say that her experience had allowed her to see the end from the beginning of my case, which gave her that confident assurance that I was lacking.) Well, days later, I was calling her back kicking myself that I didn't start the process during the initial consultation. When a friend of mine looked at the lawyers retained for my case, he told me that I managed to get a serious lawyer. Attorney Rioles had to deal with my incessant texts/emails throughout the process when each time I was thinking that the sky was falling. Many of her responses were answers that I realized later that she already had provided to me, but being in a mentality stressful situation, I was forgetting and misunderstanding them. She had no problem clarifying each and every time (And I had no problem apologizing each and every time). I don't think I have apologized enough, though. I think she treated me better than what my behavior had earned. The law office's online platform made it super easy and convenient for me to send over any necessary documents. The court appearances were nerve-racking but Attorney Rioles made things go smoothly for me. She passed certain legal motions that I didn't even know could be done but were perfectly in line with what I was looking to get accomplished (In court, it seemed like the couple of lawyers I heard conversing, felt that Attorney Rioles was not one they would want to challenge.) I was fortunate to have had her in my corner through it all. I felt that she went above and beyond several times (and even now weeks after the close of the case helping me tie up some loose ends). Before Attorney Rioles, I had never known a lawyer to be of a type to treat a person with a bit of sympathy and, well, like a person. I truly cannot express how satisfied I am. "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." -Proverbs 31:10

My divorce was a bit of an unpleasant surprise, but one thing that helped was having a very good attorney. Brenda took the time to know my case and argued aggressively in my best interests. Her office is efficient and she is very responsive. Honestly, without her help I’m not sure if my case would not have ended in an equitable result, but it did, and I’m very grateful to her for helping me so much.

Is extremely unresponsive, uninformative and doesn't seem to want to help at all. Literally waits until you pay him then pretty much goes completely mute. Leaves you wondering if he is even representing your case half of the time. Does not answer emails, text or calls and I have even had him tell us we had court the day OF court which is extremely unprofessional. I do not recommend him at all.

If I could give 0 stars I would. By far, the worst experience and Lawyer I've had. Doesn't work for you or at all! Rude. Terrible experience. (Too much to list on this review). During a Divorce and in Remission he expressed, no regard after paid. Saw him for 5 minutes during the whole process. Does not care. Difficult to get a hold of, much of the work, was self done, because he had no reliability. Save your money and leave it to the professionals. Don't recommend. There's other great lawyers that agree. I should have checked all platforms for reviews the real reviews and much alike! Theres others who felt the same way, he took the money and disappeared. I did everything in regards to my case. If the client had been heard, and the right laws applied, things would have been different. A lawyer that took the money and ran. There's plenty of correspondence to support this statement. I had to fire him at 1 point. Only then, he decided to finalize my divorce, once I was moving out of state for my safety, so he wouldn't have to refund me. I had another Attorney check my case and a lot could have been done. Very poor practice, your clients are your paycheck so respect them!

Amy is very personable and efficient. There have been a few times that I have gone to court without what was ordered of me, with the expectation of incarceration resulting. AMY HAS KEPT ME FROM GOING TO JAIL ON MORE THAN A FEW OCCASIONS. And I did not make it easy for her to do that, by disobeying the court order.

Amy has been our attorney off and on over the past 10 years. She has helped us with child custody, adoption and most recently a restraining order case which all went in our favor. She is very thorough with court documents and explaining the details of cases. Her fees are reasonable to the amount of time she spends working and preparing for court. She’s punctual and always makes herself available for questions. We would highly recommend her. Thank you again Amy for all your amazing work!

I was at the end of my family court case, but I was in a spot where I did not know what to do, as I had been self-representing myself. I was desperate. I called Attorney Sweet, hired him, met with him. His AMAZING paralegal and he, within a matter of a few days, were able to close my case AND make it, so myself and the other party did not need to appear in court for the final hearing. I was a pain, and they remained professional, kind, and understanding. I will definitely be going to them for anything in the future. THEY are a must in your life and when dealing with your family court matters. THANK YOU!

If you're considering a divorce, consult multiple attorneys—even if they come recommended. Tim’s a nice guy, but not the advocate you need. His reactive, slow approach left me constantly chasing answers, and he even misread an email, then quit over my response. For $120 an hour, you deserve a lawyer who’s proactive and fully engaged. Spend more for someone who will truly have your back.

Bill was a strong advocate for the best interest of my children, as well as a strong advocate for equal parenting rights for Fathers regarding placement, religion, and medical decision making. What I can't stress enough is his vast knowledge of the Family Court laws, rules and culture in RI; his inciteful guidance with me during a very difficult period; his ability to keep me focused on what was most important, especially when the long duration of the process and multiple court appearances in Washington County Family Court wore on me. The outcome for my boys resulted in equal parenting time and rights w/their mother and me, along with a solid consent order. I highly recommend Bill.

I originally hired Christine Borzilleri (now Stowell) in March of 2013 to help me adopt my son. She told me the process wasn’t complicated and it should take about six months. I was unemployed and didn’t have unlimited resources so the price was very reasonable but I guess it’s true...you get what you pay for. My adoption case became final Nov. 12, 2014. Seems that the only way I could get Christine to respond to my emails was to threaten her with calling the Bar Association or something. I could never just get a timely response. One of the documents I had to provide for the court was my son’s original birth certificate. That had to come from the Philippines and it was not easy to procure. I gave it to Ms. Borzilleri and the court says they personally handed it back to her the day my son’s adoption was final. Now, she can’t find it. I requested all my documents before the final hearing and Ms. Borzelleri said she would bring them all to me. The day of the adoption she did not. When I asked her what happened to my files she replied that she keeps them for many years. Then I found out that I’m actually entitled to have my files. Ms. Borzilleri didn’t respond to my subsequent requests for them (as well as my son’s birth certificate) until I’d informed her that I’d called Mr. Ken Luke at the MA Board of Bar Overseers. As I write this today, Feb. 6, 2015, I still don’t have my files but Ms. Borzilleri says they’re “in the mail”. She still says that she can’t find my son’s birth certificate and that’s pretty much the end of that, she’s done. My option here is to hire another lawyer to sue her to pay for my expenses in procuring yet another birth certificate. I’m so tired of this process but now, if I want my son’s birth certificate I have to go to court again? Agggggh. Buyer beware. If you hire Christine Borzilleri (Stowell) it will take you twice as long to resolve your case and get minimal response (if any) to your inquiries. Plus she may lose your original, important paperwork. I just don't want someone else to have to go through what I experienced with this lawyer.

What an Adoption Lawyer Can Do for You

An adoption lawyer specializes in navigating the legal complexities of the adoption process, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved - the adoptive parents, birth parents, and the child - are protected. They assist families through the different types of adoption, such as domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, and private adoptions. Adoption lawyers ensure that the adoption process complies with state, federal, and international laws, and handle any legal issues that may arise during the process, such as terminating parental rights, conducting home studies, and finalizing the adoption.

If you're looking to adopt or if you're a birth parent considering placing your child for adoption, an adoption lawyer can guide you through the legal requirements and ensure the process goes smoothly.

When Should I Hire an Adoption Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an adoption lawyer in the following situations:

  • Private or independent adoption: If you’re adopting a child directly from the birth parents without the involvement of an adoption agency, a lawyer is essential to draft and review all legal documents, including consent forms and parental rights termination agreements.
  • Foster care adoption: If you’re adopting a child from foster care, a lawyer can help navigate the legal process, ensure the child’s eligibility for adoption, and represent you in court to finalize the adoption.
  • Stepparent or relative adoption: If you’re adopting a stepchild or a relative, a lawyer can assist in terminating the parental rights of the biological parent and ensure the adoption is completed legally and efficiently.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are complex, involving multiple layers of laws from the U.S. and the child’s birth country. A lawyer can help navigate immigration requirements and ensure compliance with international treaties like the Hague Convention.
  • Contested adoptions: If a birth parent changes their mind about the adoption or there is a dispute over parental rights, a lawyer can represent you in court and ensure that the adoption proceeds legally.
  • Adoption for same-sex couples: If you're a same-sex couple looking to adopt, a lawyer can help ensure that your adoption complies with state laws and that both parents have equal legal rights to the child.
  • Birth parent representation: If you’re a birth parent considering adoption, a lawyer can ensure that your rights are protected, help you understand the legal implications of terminating parental rights, and ensure that your decision is legally sound.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help avoid legal complications and ensure that the adoption is legally finalized as smoothly as possible.

What Does an Adoption Lawyer Do?

An adoption lawyer provides a variety of legal services, ensuring that the adoption process is completed in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing legal paperwork: Adoption lawyers handle all the necessary paperwork, including petitions to terminate parental rights, consent forms, and final adoption decrees. They ensure that the adoption is in line with state, federal, and international laws.
  • Conducting home studies: Some adoptions require a home study to evaluate the prospective adoptive family. While a social worker usually conducts the study, a lawyer can ensure that the process complies with legal requirements and that the report is submitted correctly.
  • Terminating parental rights: Lawyers assist in terminating the legal rights of the biological parents, either voluntarily through signed consent or involuntarily through court proceedings if necessary.
  • Representing clients in court: Adoption lawyers represent adoptive parents, birth parents, or other parties in court hearings to finalize the adoption or resolve disputes.
  • Navigating international adoption laws: For international adoptions, a lawyer helps ensure that all legal requirements, both in the U.S. and the child’s home country, are met, including securing the child’s visa and citizenship.
  • Providing legal advice: Adoption lawyers guide clients through each step of the adoption process, advising them on their rights and obligations, as well as any potential legal issues that may arise.
  • Drafting post-adoption agreements: In some cases, especially open adoptions, a lawyer can help draft post-adoption agreements that specify the level of contact between the adoptive and birth parents.

How Are Adoption Lawyers Paid?

Adoption lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the adoption and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many adoption lawyers charge a flat fee for handling the entire adoption process. This is common for straightforward adoptions, such as stepparent or foster care adoptions, where the legal work is relatively predictable.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex adoptions, such as contested or international adoptions, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: In cases where the adoption process may take longer or involve more legal work (e.g., termination of parental rights or court disputes), a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront, so you understand the total cost of the adoption and any additional expenses that may arise during the process.

How Much Does an Adoption Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an adoption lawyer depends on the type of adoption and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Stepparent or relative adoption: Legal fees for these types of adoptions typically range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on whether the adoption is contested or requires a court hearing.
  • Domestic private adoption: The legal fees for a private adoption usually range from $5,000 to $10,000, including drafting documents, terminating parental rights, and finalizing the adoption in court.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are generally more expensive, with legal fees ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the adoption and the child’s country of origin.
  • Contested adoption: If the adoption is contested and involves court disputes, legal fees may range from $10,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the length and complexity of the court proceedings.

In addition to lawyer fees, adoptive parents should also be aware of additional costs such as court filing fees, home study fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

Top Questions to Ask an Adoption Lawyer

Before hiring an adoption lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and knowledge to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with adoptions?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with the specific type of adoption you’re pursuing, whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, or stepparent adoption.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or hourly rate and ask for a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in your adoption.
  3. What are the legal requirements for my adoption?
Ask the lawyer to explain the legal steps involved in your adoption and any specific requirements that may apply to your case, such as home studies or parental consent.
  4. How long will the adoption process take?
Adoption timelines can vary depending on the type of adoption, so ask the lawyer for an estimate of how long the process will take, including any potential delays.
  5. What are the common challenges in adoption cases?
Ask about any potential legal challenges that could arise during the adoption process and how the lawyer plans to address them.
  6. Will I need to go to court?
Depending on the adoption, you may need to attend court hearings. Ask the lawyer whether your presence will be required and what to expect during these hearings.
  7. Can you help with post-adoption issues?
Ask the lawyer if they can assist with any post-adoption issues, such as obtaining the child’s birth certificate, finalizing the child’s U.S. citizenship (for international adoptions), or drafting post-adoption contact agreements.

How to Check the Credibility of an Adoption Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable adoption lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions on their record.
  • Look for adoption experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in adoption law and have experience handling cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on adoption cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for lawyers who are members of adoption-focused organizations like the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA), which can indicate their expertise in this field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with an adoption lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Information about the child and birth parents: Provide any available information about the child you’re adopting (e.g., age, country of origin, current living situation) and the birth parents, if applicable.
  • Adoption preferences: Be clear about the type of adoption you’re pursuing - whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, or private - and discuss any preferences you have regarding the child’s age, background, or special needs.
  • Legal documents (if applicable): If you’ve already begun the adoption process or have signed any agreements, bring copies of all relevant legal documents, such as consent forms or agency agreements.
  • Questions about the adoption process: Prepare a list of questions about the legal steps involved in your adoption, potential timelines, and any concerns you may have about the process.
  • Financial considerations: Be ready to discuss your budget for legal fees and any additional costs, such as home studies, court fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for your adoption journey.
