This was my first time getting in trouble with the law and Ryan did an amazing job at explaining what was going to happen, and what the best outcome could be. He got my DUI moved down to a Negligent Driving and got me the cheapest fine possible. You can tell he is passionate about what he does, I would recommend him to everyone!

I retained Harriet after hearing multiple times from others how my case could not be won. Harriet agreed that it was a difficult case but decided to represent me with my wrongful discharge tort claim from the State of Washington. To make matters more complicated, I was a probationary employee with no rights. I had only worked 4 months for my employer before they separated me from employment. I was impressed with the letters she wrote the opposing party arguing discrimination. They were, in essence, legal memoranda with the law cited and legal authority provided. At first, I thought that all I could get was the termination or separation removed from my file in exchange for a letter of resignation written by me to be placed in my personnel file. The bottom line was that due to Harriet's help, not only did they agree to change the separation to a resignation, they agreed to give me monetary compensation, provide neutral references if asked and to refer all future calls about my separation to the personnel office. All that after only 4 months of employment! Harriet literally worked magic!

Harriet was very effective for me. Not only did she help in a personnel hearing. She was very good at gathering information, researching, and advising me during the process. She pointed out the ups and downs of going into a hearing. It ended up going much as she suspected. The personnel hearing resulted in a favorable outcome. I was very satisfied with Harriet's efforts and would give her "high marks" regardless of the outcome.

I was on paid administrative leave for 10 months before hiring Harriet. My situation was very complex with hundreds of documents and emails showing what had happened. Harriet was able get her head around the situation in a short amount of time. Harriet understood school budgets and school laws. Within three weeks of hiring Harriet, she wrote a 16 page letter to the district and their attorney which convinced the district that they didn’t have a case. Harriet worked tirelessly on my behalf. I would get emails from her at all hours of the night and day. she was always available to answer my questions. She ultimately brokered an agreement that allowed me to return to work. Harriet isn’t much for pleasantries or small talk. If you are looking for an attorney that is going to counsel you and make you feel good, she probably isn’t for you. If you are looking for someone who knows the law and knows how to deal with employers and their attorneys, she is a great choice. I would wholeheartedly recommend Harriet.

Wendy was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end, and even after the fact. Such a breath of fresh air compared to the other lawyers I've dealt with - especially when it comes to ease to talk to, not nickel & diming us and completely keeping us abreast of the happenings in the case. She always got back to us right away, was upbeat and personable. Plus we WON the case! I'll be hiring her for all my lawyering needs from now on.

Mr. Taylor was appointed by TC Superior Court to defend my grandson for a first felony offense. He was as good, if not better than, a privately retained attorney in terms of effective defense, bringing out the right questions at trial, and statements for the judge. The result was my grandson receiving a "first offender" consideration from possibly the sternest (but also intuitive) judge in the county, with treatment requirement instead of the prison sentencing range normally carried by the charge. Mr. Taylor was thorough and effective, and I would highly recommend him as a privately retained attorney for criminal defense.

When I needed an attorney but couldn't afford to get a paid one I had to have a court appointed one and that made me feel like I was for sure gonna do time. I got appointed mr Taylor to represent me in my case where I was charged with possession with intent to deliver and the within a 1000 feet of school bus stop. Mr Taylor was very polite and knowledgeable about the law and also knowledgeable of how sometimes the prosecutors and lawyers are friends that discuss cases when not at work and he assured me that he wasn't one of those guys. He wasnt very talkative and that made me nervous and I asked the private detective he had working on my case what he thought of mr being a court appointed attorney ? Or would I get better representation by paying for one? He told me that I was.very fortunate to have mr Taylor fighting my case and that one of his strong points was that he don't say much because the prosecutors have no clue what's he gonna do. Anyways he was ready for trial in a short time and every time it got continued he ask me if I still want to go to trial. The final offer that the courts gave me was a 2 year diversion witht the friendship program and after meeting all the requirements and paying a fine and staying out of trouble for two years in the end the case will be dismissed. I took the plea and am very pleased with how it all worked out for me because of the good attorney I had. Thankyou for helping me to remain felony free and out of prison. I recommend Chris Taylor for any criminal defense needed to win

I have retained Chris for more than one case and his representation has been stellar every time. From quick consultations to hunkering down in settlement negotiations, he is great. I have worked with Kris over the last year on a complicated double tax situation. I found him to be the one person I can rely on in addressing the issue and moving it forward. When a company is up against a state run agency, it feels most frustrating and hopeless. But Kris has been steady and like a rock to hang on to. Kirs has introduced us to how the system works and continues to work with us to get the issue looked at and, hopefully, resolved. I also heard Kris speak at a business meeting and he is well spoken, funny and well organized. People enjoyed listening to him and he was able to present his material so it could be understood.

We found Drew because another lawyer told us he was good at taking cases that are unusual. That he knows how to fight these cases that nobody else wanted to take. Drew was straight forward with our case and the costs involved during our consult. Drew is straight forward no sugar coating the situation. I appreciated this because I knew he was authentic. We had to put in work but Drew told us if we did some things on our own it would save us a lot of money. It also helped us in remembering some details that we may have forgotten. Drew is intelligent and at times I felt dumb not understanding him but not to worry he would break things down in layman’s terms until we got it. At times I was unsure of communication as he wouldn’t answer emails as often as I would have liked but he is a busy attorney and this didn’t stop him from knowing all the details of the case and looking up laws to fight it. Drew knows his stuff! He was determined to win this case by using his knowledge and knowing the law. I was amazed watching him represent me so well. Literally couldn’t have found a better lawyer. We are grateful we found Drew. If you are searching for the right attorney for you, look no further. Drew is the best. Oh and we won!

Mr. Forde was great at telling us what we wanted to hear in a very comforting way but never actually delivered. He would get all riled up like he was ready to go to bat for us then back off the second L&I would show the least bit of resistance. We did most all of the footwork on our own case, had a difficult time getting a hold of him by phone or email and would have to keep close eye on my claim for any upcoming appointments as his office would never let you know of any upcoming appointments. This happened for all but maybe 3 over almost 5 years. I would fire him now if I could but claim is coming to a close so not sure if I can. This is not a lawyer i would recommend to anyone. Very unprofessional and not very helpful and his office staff also never responds to email or returning your phone calls.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
