Hunter has that eye of the tiger when it comes to taking on a case and will fight for you to get the results that are fair and justified. He gives you the personal attention you need to give you peace of mind and security to know you’ve chosen the right attorney. I was in an unfortunate situation that was tremendously untimely. After consulting with 6 different lawyers, I decided to go with Mr. Jason Cromey. The reason Jason initially stood out to me was because of his incredible history in and out of the courtroom. I, without a doubt, am very happy that I put my trust into Jason. My case seemed like it was not going to end well for me. I felt like I had everything going against me. Jason was honest and straightforward with me the entire time. There was no sugar coating or anything of the sort. However, he still had a way of easing my mind throughout the process. He was honestly kind of amazing with the amount of time and research that he put into my case. Jason was able to find evidence in every little crack, that ultimately brought about a successful resolution in my case. I immediately felt a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders, and am now moving forward with my life. 10 out of 10 times, I would recommend my family and friends to hire Jason Cromey.

John is a great lawyer who'd I hire again in a heartbeat. I was extremely anxious about my case when we met. However, he created a solid defense within our first consultation, due to his legal expertise, that ended up winning us the case. He was very relatable and down to earth, while remaining professional, and his staff was very responsive.

I have retained 4 prominent attorneys in Pensacola to represent me for cannabis related charges over the past 20 years. Now that cannabis is legal in Florida for medical use and I have a current medical card, I was still arrested and jailed for my cannabis not being in the proper container. My last attorney told me several times that if I was arrested again for cannabis there would be nothing that he could do to help me. So there I was, just like you are doing right now, looking for a new attorney and reading reviews. I came across John Terrezza and read his reviews and called his office to schedule a consultation. Fanny, his office manager answered, asked me a few questions and put me on a brief hold. Then after a moment, John Terrezza came on the phone and asked me a few more questions and then he told me he was interested in my case. I met with him the very next day and was very impressed how smart and sharp he was with the current cannabis laws. I retained him to represent me and he was able to handle my case with all charges being dropped. I assure you, that if you need an attorney that is really for the people, an attorney that is well read and smart and sharp, well spoken and respected in the courts, you have found him. He is John Terrezza. Thank you Mr. Terrezza and Fanny.

I couldn’t be happier with the service and advice I received from Mr. Passeretti. Joe is very professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and acted quickly on my case. Just from speaking with him I felt confident in his abilities to solve the problems I was having with a “not so honest” contractor. I also had some interaction with Mr. J. Nix Daniel on a different issue. Mr. Daniel was also very professional and courteous. Everyone I interacted with at the firm was top-notch and pleasant. I can see why so many folks at this firm have won so many awards and the firm is so highly touted.

The first time I called Mr. Beroset it was after hours, and I had no experience with the legal process or what to expect. Mr. Beroset met with me in person the very next day and patiently and intently listened to the facts of my case, took notes, and asked questions. He was patient and compassionate, organized, and thorough. He also went over and beyond and talked to investigators on my behalf early in the case. I appreciated everything Mr. Beroset did for me. While she was with Whibbs & Stone, she handled SSDI & SSI cases. She never checked her secretary's work. I wasn't automatically sent copies of any of her work product. I was just told, "It takes time." I needed a copy of my appeal which her secretary gave me. Apparently, she used precious work product as forms to make the work easier. I found part way through my claim sent to the Appeals Court that I had suddenly become an older man with problems. She said she would take care of it. Within 2 weeks I received a denial from the Appeal Court, and she dropped my case like a hot potato. After my paperwork was reviewed by two other firms, I was informed that she was incompetent and had given more info than was necessary. Her sloppy "form" habits didn't help. Since there were many mistakes made, I was unable to get additional representation elsewhere. Her inept represention caused serious depression and anxiety. Maybe she learned more. I would never use her to clean my home, let alone represent me in court. I am glad so many of you feel you got good results. I didn't file a complaint. I couldn't think of her or my case for a long time. I juat didn't work. I kept going into a deep depression.

I wish I had read the other reviews before I considered this person. This "lady" lacks all morals. Any "professional" in her field should know not to cross the line and seek out relationships with married and divorcing men. Worse even she preys on them. Hideous inside and out. Jill Warren was recommended to me by Tiffany Woodward. At first she was amazing, I fell for her enthusiasm, her determination and just enough slink to handle my complicated divorce. However her skulls were very short term. She was a very good show. Became more impressed with the opposing attorneys flirting with her. Was terrified to take my case to trial because she openly admired she was intimidated by the new judge. She ruined my life. My ex husband didn’t have too. Jill Warren’s lack of professionalism, knowledge and promises destroyed me. She made promises: a investigation into finances, witnesses, etc. I do not see how she sleeps at night. Do not fall for her initial service and promises, she is the worse mistake of my life. The law is definitely not 50-50 when Jill represents you…she destroys your case. 33 year marriage!! All I got was his debt and Jill’s bill!

I was involved in a dependency case with my 2 children that stemmed from an incident where their mother was arrested for child neglect. We had been separated for going on 2 years, and this particular incident was kept from me. We had been time sharing with the children for over a year, and I had my children with me every week. Mr Cserep was my court appointed attorney, and I do not recommend him after what I've experienced. Mr Cserep did the same thing to me that he was publicly reprimanded for in 2018, failing to communicate with his clients. I tried to reach Mr. Cserep for a month almost with no response. He was available though at our first court date through zoom in the courtroom, but was only available through audio since his camera was "broken". Mr. Cserep claimed he had been trying to reach me and wasn't able to. When I produced a list of all the times and ways I had tried to contact Mr. Cserep, the judge questioned him about whether or not he had received emails from me on certain dates, and Mr. Cserep admitted he did receive my communications, and neglected to respond. This is just one instance of the absurdity and aversion that I encountered throughout my family court experience. Mr. Cserep continued to disappoint me throughout this process until I ultimately decided to remove myself from the proceedings. I thought I would find justice and logic going before a judge, but instead I only found absurdity and aversion. My relationship with my children has suffered so much throughout this process and has ultimately caused irreversible damage. I have been hurt more than you could imagine, and ultimately alienated from my children. My children's mother was given custody after being convicted of felony child neglect, and I lost my rights as a parent. Very eye opening and very sad experience.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
