I hired Jim Lieber a number of years ago in regard to an education work-place discrimination matter that touched on any number of intricate points tied to the school’s standards/politics/contracts/personalities. Jim proved masterful at bringing justice to the situation. He was able to air the details that proved greatly (and appropriately) embarrassing to the opposing side while couching all such information within the proper legal/contractual framework to maximize the effectiveness of the complaints I was raising before all the right authorities. For anyone facing a work-place situation they think may be worth addressing legally, I cannot imagine a better attorney to have than Jim Lieber.

Mr. Lieber’s dedication and leadership in solving my dilemma with my best interest at heart meant so much as we journeyed through a difficult process. Mr. Lieber and his entire staff were quick to communicate with me and handled each and every situation with great care and professionalism. I would not hesitate to recommend James Lieber and his firm to anyone.

I was blessed to have the opportunity to have Douglas Williams represent me in a very serious worker's compensation case against a powerful company. I went through extreme pain & very wrongful negligence causing my life to be traumatic & health deeply damaged. The case was the first type of this kind. All other lawyers were intimidated by the challenges and were even disrespectful to me. Douglas Williams was respectful, compassionate, confident & accepted the case with ease and grace. He was open and honest in communicating every challenge and possibility. He completed everything he said he would and overcame every obstacle turning out what everyone else made excuses not to do saying was an impossible win. He was fearless, committed to the lengthy process & demonstrated great compassion and integrity. A true master, I am greatful and thankful. Contact him immediately truly the best.

Highly recommended. I got there name from a google search when I suddenly needed a lawyer. They had great reviews and responded immediately when I needed time-sensitive counsel with a family matter. Thomas McKinley is an excellent lawyer, very clear in his communications, reassuring and compassionate. Lawyers are always expensive but I found their rates reasonable. He was able to communicate directly with the DA and save me a lot of footwork and time, and was able to get the matter resolved without me having to deal with the court directly and provided great reassurance throughout. Well worth the money and I will call him first if I ever have any other needs

I sat in jail with a bond set 200k for simple and 5 k for DUI (3) assault and intimidating witness, from a known abusive ex. Drug dealer. A police officer I sued a year prior finally pulls me over in another jurisdiction under no legal way no legal reason to pull me over. He stated that my back window was covered with a plastic he couldn't see through which was one that I bought at AutoZone and this was in Westmoreland county he then said he traveled me across the bridge for 4/10 of a mile to clock me to make to see if I was speeding I suppose he came to the conclusion I was going 34 in a 25 which would be impossible to prove because there wasn't enough space for him to actually properly conduct that speed check and that was established in the courtroom in front of the judge and the judge still allowed this man to leave the courtroom lying and I know courts got a lot to lie about but if I'm innocent until proven guilty nah. in a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee . Judge mears's Office Mike warrick and Ferrell h okun and Weaver. Basically ruined me

I hired Tulley Law firm due to some personal injuries that I sustained in a car accident, it was the best decision to have made. I was represented better than I could have ever imagined . My needs were put first and was treated as a friend rather than a number. My opinions were valued and my doubts were always reassured. My nerves were calmed and the process was always explained. Michael fought hard for me. He went above and beyond and did everything he could to ensure a great outcome. I couldn't have asked for a better law firm. Thank you Mike! By far this has to be the best car accident attorney. This firm helped me through a very challenging case they were extremely professional and very aggressive. I wouldn't hire anyone else. If you want a great injury law attorney, hire this firm as your injury attorney. Tulley Law is a tightly woven network of highly professional attorneys and staff professionals who walked me through a year-long process, reassuring me every step of the way. I knew Michael Tulley was the right attorney for me the moment I met him and I appreciated him keeping me in the loop about filed papers and every little step that needed to be handled to move my case forward to absolute success. Bernie represented my son in a case 7 years ago that had a satisfactory conclusion. With the decision of the courts it lead him to the sobriety he enjoys now. Recently he was attempting to rent an apartment in another state and he was turned down because records showed he had a felony. This was incorrect so we contacted Bernie for advice. He and his staff instantly acted on this on our behalf. They looked up his case, judges ruling, PA law, composed and forwarded a letter to him and the rental agency, and personally called them. WOW all this in a matter of hours and really shocked us was he didn't charge a fee. He was happy our son was on the right track and enjoying a life free from his demons of the past and soon to be a father. Who said lawyers are just ambulance chaser, Bernie and his staff prove them wrong. What a good guy and a great lawyer. Kenneth

I hired Atty. Gordon to help me re-negotiate my divorce case. I came to him with an existing divorce agreement that was settled without representation. Needless to say he had his work cut out for him. He did a wonderful job of explaining where the issues were and where we had room to negotiate. I felt very comfortable with his advice every step of the way. Divorce is a very stressful time in anyone's life and having someone like Atty. Gordon to calmly guide you along the way is priceless. I feel that he could've gouged me with excessive charges but he remained fair throughout the entire process.

Simply the best. There is no other way to describe Attorney Scialabba. John went above and beyond to help my family through a very difficult time. His compassion and knowledge of the law gave my family hope when we needed it most. John began working our case just hours after we contacted him and he never stopped. John was professional, caring, and efficient during the entire process. Not once did we have to contact him for an update because he always updated us immediately when he had some new information. John was easy to contact when we needed his guidance or help. He guided us through a very intricate legal process in a way that we could easily understand which put my family at ease. John truly has a gift when it comes to communication and making his clients feel safe because of his ability to LISTEN. John's dedication for obtaining justice and understanding the law is top notch. You won't find a better attorney than Attorney Scialabba. Not only did he win our case but he did so without it having to go to trial. Thank you again for your hard work and dedication.

I bet you never thought "decent human being" and lawyer could reside in the same person, but JPI seems to have found them! I temped for them as a legal assistant in early 1998. I wasn't a regular employee or a client (well, we'll get to that), yet I was always treated like I was one of the gang. I was included in their Friday night outings after work, and spoken to like an equal. Mr. Pass, for being a name partner, is so down-to-earth - I've worked in D.C. law firms with junior associates who treated me with less respect - and I had more seniority than them! Despite working hard, I had a big drop in income from what I had been used to and needed, so JPI helped me file for bankruptcy and even represented me - and they didn't ask for a dime over the filing fees. All Mr. Pass wanted was to see me get to a better place in life. We stayed in touch as I left Pennsylvania to make that happen. Nearly 25 years later, as I write this, I can still call and ask his advice and chat with him, if he's not busy. How many people do you meet in a lifetime who are genuinely good people, who are good at what they do? How many of those people are lawyers? I mean, I can tell stories about lawyers I've worked with and how mercenary they are even in their private lives. The profession seems to attract that type. The law firm of JPI turns the idea of the stereotypical lawyer on its head. They're good people out to do good. It's like they never lost the idealism that drove them to go to law school. This should be the ideal boutique law firm.

I have been with the firm for about two years as my divorce is taking time due to the other party. I started off with one attorney and due to maternity leave, Bethany stepped in to get the process moving after my retainer was given. I was then assigned to Chrystal. She has explained everything well and took charge of my divorce. She won the APL for me. She answered every question I had timely. The outcome of the divorce with child support and alimony is fair, considering the laws. She will also work on my custody. To be truthful the divorce process is expensive (depending on your situation), but the experience that comes with the firm is worth the cost. The firm has been very workable and most importantly truthful with me.

This firm and our Attorney has been nothing less then a blessing to our family, when we thought that everything was going against my son fighting for his child, Chrystal stepped in with no hesitation and took the wheel, provided the evidence and got my son his child. we are so grateful for everything she does and pushes hard for us each and everytime, she fights for us like she would for her own family. I couldn't be more happier, pleased and blessed 🙏 and would refer anyone I know to this firm and attorney any chance I get. Thank you again!!!!

I’ve had an absolutely incredible experience with Notaro Epstein. My attorney is Erika Reichert and she has worked so hard to understand my specific situation and concerns. She is very thorough and makes sure that all my questions are answered, no matter how many I ask her! I feel like this firm genuinely cares about me as a client and wants to help me as much as possible. Highly recommend Notaro Epstein!

Do yourselves a favor, stop outsourcing your answering service to 3rd world countries. Their English is broken and barely intelligible. It's embarrassing to speak with them. You lost a very large employment discrimination case because of it.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
