Tonya Gibbs Penn is the exception, not the rule. Not only did she have tremendous compassion with our case, but she also proved to be a brilliant attorney who demonstrates a true interest in her clients and their cases. We live in Nashville and wanted someone to represent us who would really care about our case. Trust was an important factor because our case was in Virginia and we’re in Tennessee, about ten hours from court. Ms. Penn not only made sure that we understood the specifics of our current case, but she also explained what we would need to expect going forward. She never ignored any communication or kept us guessing. She was forthright and highly responsive. More importantly, no one else would’ve been so willing to peel back the layers of the case and ask the questions that she asked in order to get the best information to help us better prepare for the future. As we look to 2021, we hope to return to Tonya Gibbs Penn for family law representation and know that if we have her on our side, we’ll be able to enter court with the assurance that she will be fighting for us the whole way. If there’s ever been a God-send in a legal battle, Ms. Penn was and is a true blessing to our family. Even now, a day later, we’re still talking about how lucky we were to find her. I highly recommend Tonya Gibbs Penn to everyone out there who needs a Virginia lawyer. She far exceeded any and all expectations.

My husband and I have found Juan's services very thorough and absolutely invaluable in relation to filing a 1-133 application for a travel document with the USCIS. We could possibly have filed the form ourselves without problems, but we certainly needed Juan’s qualified and detailed advice on immigration law – specifically highly specialized advice on our options and obligations. He has been very patient with answering our numerous questions and extremely generous with his time. We would not hesitate to return should we need assistance with other legal matters.

Juan's attention to detail and the energy he puts into every one of his cases makes him invaluable to each of his clients. He continually goes above and beyond what is requested, and he is constantly looking for better and more creative solutions to legal problems. He is honest, reliable and cost-effective. His ability to speak both English and Spanish fluently helps him competently represent a wide range of people in many different areas of law. He is a zealous advocate for each of his clients, and you will not regret hiring him.

Jennifer was very thorough informational and drafting of my estate planning documents. She was very nice to work with and always has a smile on her face. Although I was sceptical because of her youth, she is extremely knowledgeable, even more so than older attorneys I've hired or fired. Would highly recommend. I look forward to going back and working with her to re-organize my business.

My disabled boyfriend who had been separated since 2016 but fighting for his life against cancer since sept 2019 was finally well enough to finish his non-contested divorce. He use Zack. Nice man BUT he did not keep his word on anything!! Not only were we charged DOUBLE the max price he quoted but it took SIX months (he told us 45 days) for a divorce that was already filed (wordage was wrong in paperwork) AND he MAILED in the final decree. Everything was LOST in the mail which is why we had to ask WHY it hadn't gotten to the court plus we were charged a second time for him to redo the paperwork he lost, he stated it wasn't his fault!! Well we had instructed him the we would take the paperwork to the courts in the beginning and for him to CC myself on all emails, so nothing would get missed. Neither was done. So one star. Do better!!!!

Worst lawyer ever! To start, he never provides a direct phone number to reach him. He then charges for what his emails say should be "free" consultations. When I questioned why he is charging me for a consultation that his office states was free, he quit on me with out issuing me a refund. He never provided any services and "claims" he did work. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON HIM!

Timothy is an example of how lawyers should be in a perfect world. I'm not saying that he knows everything off the top of his head or that he can't be wrong but Mr. King has made me feel like the money is not the most important thing to him. Meaning that he did not always go with the option that drags things out. Instead for me, he aimed at a optimal resolution to genuinely improve the lives of my kid and the opposing party. To help improve our lives and move them forward in a meaningful way. Not only did he give legal advice and help, He really helped me discover what I know/feel is best. Through adversity of his own life, I felt his advice came from a place of real understanding. He isnt afraid of a fight I wanted one and he is very capable of helping you discover what you really want. Being a parent is important to me, my kid is all that matters. I asked him to give his honest opinion and be straight forward with me and it was refreshing. If you are debating on trying Timothy's services out give it a try. He will work with you. Of course we all have to make a living but I definitely recommend him. I never leave reviews anywhere but I felt compelled to do so here. Thank you Timothy !

WOW! I talked to a bunch of lawyers before Tim and. They all told me my case was too complicated and that they wouldn't be able to help me get the results I wanted. Then I met Tim. From the 1st meeting until the end, Tim delivered on everything he said! We worked together to develop a plan which Tim executed like a 5 star general. I was blown away by his effectiveness, professionalism and resourcefulness. Tim came up with a solution that was completely creative and unlike anything I could have done on my own. When you need the best lawyer on your case, call Tim.

I found the entire process of working with these people to be so totally unacceptable that I had to fire them before trial. They demonstrated a lack of knowledge about my case and did not follow through when it was time to execute the strategy that was explained to me among other issues such as failing to return emails or to provide advice before asking me to make a decision. I found out the hard way that it is very expensive to fire a lawyer and difficult to get your money back so I cannot recommend strongly enough that you go literally anywhere else.

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
