Lori Dally took care of me and my children. She was professional, an excellent planner and focused on what was important. Her team was fabulous! They kept me informed, always polite and quick to return calls and answered all my questions. Lori has represented me for 4 years and has seen me through the most difficult divorce. The additional situations to follow the past few years, Lori has always made the best decisions that helped my family. I trusted her every step of the way. She knows her audience and knows how to talk to the judge, mediate and expose the truth. Thank you!

I would recommend her to anyone needing a family attorney in any civil matter, as she exceeded my expectations. She was flexible when needed, and respectful to me through out my entire case. She is really the BEST!

We were in a very challenging spot, taking care of our nephew with major behavioral problems as legal guardians. Doctors advised us to call the state to put our nephew into the state conservatorship so additional facilities would be available to us. When we call, CPS threatened us with legal action, tried to intimidate, and were the opposite of helpful. Greg came through for us in a big way, when we needed it most. He calmed us about how CPS tries to intimidate guardians, advised us on how to prepare for court, and represented us. He was fantastic.

AMAZING law firm. Spencer and just team give you absolutely all of their effort. They are very communicative, honest, and caring. I have trusted Spencer with a more complicated than usual family law matter and have full faith in him. These are the folks you want on your side should you ever need legal counsel. He came highly recommended and has truly been a blessing. Don’t look any further for a family law attorney in Tarrant County. He is the best of the best.

I had previously hired another attorney back in 2016, but due to the uncooperativeness of the other party's attorney and my attorney's own personal demons, my case was dragged out for two years with zero progress. Then, I met Spencer back in April 2018. I explained to him the backstory of my case as it currently stood. My case was not an overly complicated case at all, as I was simply being denied my access for visitation. He made no promises, but did tell me that I did have good merit for a modification of the parent-child relationship, which is what I believed to be the case prior to meeting with him. If I'm not mistaken, the final trial in my case had been reset a total of 4 times over the course of my case before we officially had trial. After all these years, dating back from 2014 - 2022 (8 years), my case was so loaded with evidence, it was actually planned to have trial over the course of 2 days. Luckily, we were able to finish trial in 1 single day. While Spencer does represent both mothers and fathers, Spencer has a real passion for representing fathers and is an advocate for fathers' equal rights, this is one of the reasons I was drawn to hire Spencer. I knew that I did not make a mistake when choosing who I wanted in my corner. For those that think that simply having an attorney is the be-all and end-all, you couldn't be more wrong. You should be on top of your case just as much as your attorney is. Your case is as good as you make it out to be, an attorney can only do so much. I went to trial thinking that my case could go one of two ways. I figured in the best case scenario, I would be awarded 50/50 custody, worst case scenario, nothing would change (which is what is typically expected in the District Court I was in since the judge is traditional and old fashioned - which means "pro-mom"). To my surprise, the judge awarded me primary custody with everything additional that I asked for in my pleadings (effective 04/11/2022). Spencer is a fantastic attorney who actually gets the job done and takes pride in his work! There are many attorneys that practice Family Law, but in my opinion, I wouldn't consider most of them to be good "trial attorneys", whereas Spencer knows all of the ins-and-outs of trial, he knows what evidence should be presented and when, he knows exactly when to make an objection, and he can be extremely persuasive to not only the judge but the opposing party. I never had any issues with communicating with him or his office. I could not have asked for better representation! I know exactly who I will refer people to when a Family Law attorney is needed! Thank you so much for everything, Spencer!

Spencer handled a divorce for me. I was so impressed with the meticulous and determined manner in which he handled the case. The prior lawyer quit on us and didn't respond. Spencer stepped in and pushed the case forward and obtained an incredible result. Spencer fights for his clients until the end, then he fights some more. Because of his efforts, Spencer gained a client for life and I recommend him and his firm to everyone I know in need of a family law attorney.

There is no better attorney to have with you in family court. He’s honest and upfront and will not stop fighting for you. My nightmare case has lasted 9 years and he’s been a godsend every single step of the way. He’s whip smart, detail oriented and has a mass of resources behind him that are invaluable. I refer him to every person I know that finds themselves in family court. In fact, the opposing attorneys secretary told him that he’s the best at what he does and then asked him to represent a family member of hers. If you have the opportunity to have him take your case, consider yourself extraordinarily blessed.

I cannot speak any higher of Jeff Branch. He handled my unfortunate divorce for me and made it a smooth, way less stressed ordeal. I had originally hired a different attorney who did what most lawyers do, promise to help you, get your money, then put you on the back burner. After my wife's attorney walked on my attorney a few times with no fight I called and met with Mr. Branch. Let me just say, the tides turned quickly to a point where everything smoothed out and stayed fair. One of the most brutally honest people I know, Jeff always told me the truth and shot me straight. Right from the start with my case, he told me "no one will walk away with everything, but I promise you'll both walk away with what you can live with". He was so right, our divorce was fair and neither side felt cheated. The one thing I will say is Jeff Branch commands respect with his knowledge of the law and his winning attitude. From the moment he took over my case, it was like I had hired a Pit Bull to represent me. He watched over my case with great attention, communicated with me at every step, and literally changed the balance of the divorce from my wife and her attorney taking anything and everything they could to them doing more agreeing to Jeff's terms and submitting to what he told them they could have. His courtroom presence is very professional but very intimidating at the same time, with an air about himself as someone not to be pushed around. I really cannot say enough about how he got me through the most difficult time I've experienced with confidence and a resolution I felt very happy about. He truly cares for every client. If you find yourself in need a of an attorney for divorce or family law, you owe it to yourself to hire the best to get you through it. I highly recommend Jeff Branch as the ONLY choice for family law.

I was thrown into a life changing situation with no means at our first consultation. I had enough money to pay for the consultation but didn't have the retainer amount to hire her at the moment. I left her office not knowing what I would do, she was very straightforward and kind. The next day I got a call from her saying she was taking my case if I still wanted her to that she couldn't sleep the night before for thinking about me. She was God sent blessing and her representation was above anything I ever imagined. Jamie won my case to my satisfaction completely. Thank you

I have worked with Ms. Taylor since the start of my divorce in 2017, it's conclusion in 2018 and every issue that has come up since. Through everything the other party has thrown at us (constantly losing counsel, backing out of agreements, and generally prolonging the case) she has handled every aspect in my case with urgency, attention to detail, and a grace that only she has. I'm amazed at how she is always able to anticipate the opposing parties next move. A little background on this issue, my son was back and forth to the doctor around Jan 2020 with breathing issues. Finally, he was diagnosed with severe asthma. He had to take different medications and be hooked up to machine several times a day. Then, Covid-19 hit in March 2020. During this time, he were still going to visitation and all parties were made aware of our son's condition and the doctor's recommendation. However, the other party did not follow these guidelines (i.e. taking him to parties) which put him as risk. Ms. Taylor handled this situation thoughtfully. She attempted to work with the other party outside of court and get him to agree to follow the doctor's recommendations and guidelines. Only when the other party refused, did we seek assistance from the courts. The judge ruled in our favor allowing my son to limit his exposure to Covid-19 while getting his asthma under control. I will be forever grateful to Ms. Taylor and her skills as an attorney for helping my family live a happy healthy life.

My child custody and support was messy and having Jamie representing me instilled confidence that no matter the outcome, it was with the best interest of my children ALWAYS as first priority. I was completely satisfied with Ms. Taylor’s representation. I have suggested her to friends and family.

I want all to know that Mr. David Wynne’s representation in my court case has given me not only the impression but the confidence that being an attorney, especially in family court, takes a special person with a heart that is understanding and compassionate for their clients and involves extreme knowledge of the Texas Family Laws that as I know now is an ever-changing living entity. When we started this cause, it was going to be a simple visitation request so I could spend a few hours a week with my son. Mr. Wynne was straight forward on what I should expect and how we should approach everything in regards to the case, which was very important to me because I had never had to be involved with anything of this sort and was completely unaware of what to do. From our first consultation, I felt a sence of relief and confidence that he would do everything he could to help me. His honesty, confidence and knowledge of Family Law was proven to be not only evident throughout my case but exceptional and extremely beneficial to the brilliant outcome. Our case quickly turned into a custody battle when abuse and neglect of the child was determined and from there, without hesitation, he jumped right in and with all the confidence you would want your attorney to have when it involves protecting someone you love. As I had mentioned before, this was a lengthy case, and with each court date Mr. Wynne was always prepared for the known and unknown, his expert trial ability during cross examination and questioning was respectful yet aggressive when it needed to be. I feel that he fought for our family like he would fight for his own. I want to Thank you Mr. Wynne that I now have custody of my son with all the other stipulations that I will not get into that helps assure that we can breathe a sigh of relief for my son who is now a funny happy loving 3 year old. After one of the court dates David Wynne stopped and talked to the other party’s Father in the hallway it was a brief friendly encounter I don’t know what was said, but the Father text me later that day telling me “David is a really good guy, I wish we could use him” – to me that epitomizes who David Wynne is… as an attorney and as a person.

David was able to out class my x-wife attorney, we summary judge on one of the sues against me and on the other we were able to get them to go away as we had them dead to right heading into our court date. David was the first attorney to out class my x-wife attorneys and my wife used the one firm everyone claims is the best in Texas, well David proved he was the best in Texas. Thank U David, I will be forever in your debt for winning my cases.

Before hiring David Wynne to represent me in a complex divorce case, I carefully studied Fort Worth Magazine's "Top Lawyers for 2020" and attorney reviews in the Avvo Lawyer Directory. In both places, I found Mr. Wynne to be very highly rated and decided to contact him by telephone. A ten-minute conversation convinced me that David Wynne was the attorney I wanted to represent me. While reading my first letter from Mr. Wynne, I noted that his letterhead promised to provide clients with "aggressive controlled representation." Yes, I found this to be the case, but, more importantly, I found him to a "client friendly attorney" who always represented me in a competent, caring, and classy manner. My divorce case had been poorly handled by my previous attorney. For this reason, lots of work was required by David and he had many "Motions" to file just to "get us up to speed" and "place us on an even playing field" with my former wife and her attorney. As this occurred, during a five-month period, David's legal knowledge and skills as an attorney became very evident to me. Because of delaying tactics by the opposing counsel and the fact that this counsel required my divorce case to be arbitrated rather than settled in a court of law, the case took 14 months to resolve. Throughout this time, David provided me with excellent legal advice and was always available to support me. At The Wynne Law Firm, David is ablely assisted and supported by Sarah Halferty, administrative assistant, and Candice Blalock, senior paralegal. Both of them are very efficient, dedicated to legal excellence, strongly support the work of David, and provide needed assistance to his clients. Personally, I found Sarah and Candice to be pleasant, helpful, and wonderful representatives of The Wynne Law Firm. For any Fort Worth Area resident needing expert legal representation in matters relating to child custody, family law issues, or the divorce process, I highly recommend David Wynne. He is a knowledgeable, skillful attorney who very professionally interacts with his clients. Certainly, if there comes a time when I again need legal assistance, I will contact David Wynne.

You know that slimy, slick feeling you may get when speaking to a lawyer? Not for a moment did I ever feel that way with Kelly. She was gracious enough to take my custody case when my previous lawyer failed and I thought I stood no chance at winning custody of my kids. Kelly was kind, firm, and my voice of reason when I thought I was drowning. She left no stone unturned against my ex and destroyed any credibility he thought he had. Not to mention, she was incredibly polite, organized, and likeable in front of the judge. I say with absolute honesty that I never would have won custody without Kelly. She knew exactly how to pick apart his lies and show the judge why he was unfit to have them. Kelly is worth her weight in gold. I thank my lucky stars every night knowing that my kids are where they belong.

Mr. Franks represented our family in a child custody suit about 20 years ago. His advice and counsel based on his years of experience and knowledge of the law and the court players, got us through a very difficult time. Most recently, suddenly facing a divorce, there was no question about who would represent me. Jon Michael knows the law, of course, but he also knows the legal playing field in Tarrant County, which helped me to avoid having to go through unnecessary procedures. He was able to secure my divorce in a minimum time frame; he respected my wishes and goals and provided excellent advice and counsel to help me achieve all of the goals I had set out. He is quick to get to the heart of an issue and determine a proper strategy. Northeast Tarrant County is very fortunate to have such a high standard of legal expertise and experience in its community. Mr. Franks always has his client's back - you can count on him.

I've been working with Dixon at Ledger Law Firm for over a year now on my car accident case and I have to say, I am blown away by the professionalism and efficiency in which he and his office works. At no point were any questions or concerns of mine left unanswered and they kept me in touch and updated consistently in a manner which was well beyond my expectations. The results of my case were excellent and handled in an amazing manner. I cannot recommend this firm enough!

William and his legal team made my divorce fast and painless for both parties. I would hire them a million times over. I felt heard and understood. The process was explained adequately to me. I never felt out of the loop or in the dark. When it came down to fighting over assets they prepared a rebuttal quickly and I ended up with everything I wanted and more.

If you ever want to feel like you have to be a lawyer to talk to your lawyer, by all means hire this group. Hannah was quick to reply back when it came to withdrawing representation and got it signed by Judge same day, but didn't even bother to let me know until I looked on e-file and asked. Any time I asked a question, she seemed irritated and bothered by me. She would pick apart my question and make me feel like i had to be a lawyer just to ask the question right. She would constantly interrupt me, raise her voice and just act like she had no time for me when she was the one who would request we do a phone consult! She tried to get me to sign a final divorce decree that didn't even address any of the issues I asked (but yet still had to pay for them to write up something I didn't even want and then pay more out of my retainer to get it fixed). When I would ask, she would take forever to get back to me and then if I emailed weeks later to ask about it, she would either blow me off or act irritated over the phone about it. The only brightside was I was smart enough to request a copy of my bill (that they weren't sending regular so they could sneak in extra billable hours) and was able to get in writing that that would be refunded to me so she couldn't empty out the whole retainer out of pettiness. She was not very empathetic at all. I ended up filing pro-se and finishing the rest myself and even editing parts of it even though she tried to sink me by saying I would have to hire a whole new attorney and be out double just to finish the last bit of it.

Terrible experience with Sarah particularly. My coparent withheld my ability to see my infant on multiple occasions, Sarah charged me for documentation that didn’t improve or remedy the situation; the coparent was not held accountable whatsoever. The response I received from filing the expensive paperwork Sarah’s firm advised was my coparent filing a false police report saying their vehicle was broken into implicating me for which I had proofs were 100% false (the vehicle was NOT broken into or tampered with and I was nowhere remotely close to area it was located at the time in question). I was required to meet at police stations following that accusation - know what the coparent showed up in?? The undamaged vehicle in question on the DAY FOLLOWING the accusation. (For the record, it’s supposed to be a crime in Texas to file a false police report). Again, none of it mattered when we *never made it to court* — saddled with $25k worth of representation debt (when the standard for family court settlements is ~$11k to my understanding), a hefty child support amount, and ONE day more than a standard possession as a non-custodial parent. I wrote her an angry, frustrated “who do you work for here?” email to which she felt the need to call me personally at 3 am having me tell her I thought she was the perfect person to help me with my situation or she would be resigning my case. Should’ve dropped her then and there. I’m an honorably discharged veteran, a former federal employee, an Eagle Scout, etc. I was up against someone with a an assault record. Continuously told her firm I wanted a 50/50 coparenting agreement and wasn’t trying to skirt child support because I didn’t think it would help my case. Not what was presented at the 2-3 court days we were supposed to have, I took off work for and made special arrangements for but didn’t actually “take.” We never made it to court - ended up in mediation with a RETIRED judge who didn’t read or pay any attention to the facts of the case whatsoever as his blanketed opening statement at mediation was - “I don’t care what the facts are here, I’m not taking any child away from his mother short of something drug related” - a determination based solely based on gender/sex. I did 90% of the talking during mediation; Sarah and her assistant sat there and barely spoke. I’m not an attorney. I didn’t get paid $25k to represent someone. Had no idea what I was doing. Sarah worked with the coparent’s attorney and came up with a 30+ page document that provides more coverage for my co-parent than me and I was billed for it; co-parent walked away from the case on a pro-bono basis. If I mess up, jail time and fines. If the co-parent messes up, there would be hefty court fees for me to enforce anything and then next to 0 repercussions for them. My coparent has been so empowered by how easy it was to walk over me that she has continued to violate the agreement (never missed a day with my son, coparent’s missed a plethora; coparent doesn’t send written updates when our circumstances change, I’ve had to; coparent moved outside the agreed upon living area, repercussions are supposed to be me becoming custodial, NOPE; coparent filed 2 more false police reports since implicating but not naming me to avoid harassment charges, nothing stopping them). If you’re a single father out there for any reason and are looking for help, know upfront no one (courts, attorneys, etc) cares about the dad’s rights or involvement in a child’s life. Since the resolution, I’ve struggled to make ends meet between the debts and my obligations. Think when I’m struggling to this degree that I can afford or would even bother going back to court to have my coparent “held accountable” for the violations?? Steer clear of Sarah’s firm; felt massively overcharged for the minimal support or intervention I received from them.

I will start off by saying our case did get resolved, but this was also an easy slam dunk case that shouldn’t have cost this much. We were trying to terminate the biological mother’s parental rights but she was charged with murder and plead to manslaughter and had been in prison for the last 2.5 years and looking at 8 more years and had not had contact with the 5 year old child for the last 3 years. I initially was told this could all be resolved for $5k retainer and that’s why we hired Spencer. However, at the docket call the other side wanted to proceed with jury trial which no one expected. They had to scramble to get the case together as they admitted they hadn’t really looked at the case over the last 6 months for trial on a Monday. We were told he needed another 10k to go to trial. Well they prepped for trial (mostly the paralegal) and last minute on Friday right before the trial, the mother signed over her parental rights. 3-4 days of prep and not going to trial blew through $7k of our retainer in addition to the initial $5k we gave them?? We expected something like $5k but $7k? How much more would we have had to pay if we had gone to trial which the they thought would last 2 days?? Definitely look at the prices and sign something in writing before you hire them The mother and her lawyer stalled and duped us and our lawyer into spending all this money and time for nothing and our lawyer did not anticipate any of this. The law firm also acted like they were very busy with other cases. They took a few days to a week and sometimes it took a second email for them to respond to anything. I would say not the worst but not the best law firm given our experience. If I could go back I think I would’ve gone with another firm honestly.

I was in a recent custody battle and needed an attorney for representation. I went on Google and found the Nilsson’s Legal Group. Had a conversation with Mr. Spencer Nilsson and he assured me of plan of action for my hearing. Here I am 6 months later with custody of my 2 children and child support free. I would recommend them to anyone who needs legal assistance in their child support hearings. Spencer did what he said he was going to do and he kept his word! Thanks again to The Nilsson Legal Group for all your help!

Lory is the worst attorney for males. Please do NOT waste your money. I made a review on her before and it seems that it has been deleted. I hired her on a custody case presented SO much evidence for her to use and bring up in court and she CHOOSE not to present or bring up MOST of the things I provided for her. She has no fight in her doesn't for you to get the best most reasonable outcome. She came into court really unprepared and didn't help prepare me for the terminology. Upon hiring a different attorney is when I realized the mistake I made in hiring her. The initial court is what sets the tone for how things will proceed forward. It sets the tone for how things will follow and the emphasis and fight She put into the initial court it was as if she just waved the white flag without fighting it. My child support was set by her at 1100$ a month for one kid. ONE kid. I make 80k a year my ex makes 60k a year I SHOULD NOT BE PAYIN THAT MUCH! the initial court and how she failed to properly represent me is to blame for that. SAVE UR MONEY IF YOU ARE A MALE. If this law firm doesn't like my review they can contact me personally and we can discuss how they misrepresented me. DO NOT TAKE MY COMMENT DOWN I WILL COME BACK AND POST IT AGAIN. I AM DEALING WITH SO MUCH FINANCIAL RESTRICTIONS DUE TO HOW LORY RESPRESENTED ME. WORST WROST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!

At one time or another, over the years, I have employed both Patton Maynard or Creighton Maynard to represent me and I have been EXTREMELY satisfied each time with their representation. People should remember that Attorneys have to deal with the facts brought to them by the client and sometime the Attorney can only do so much, given the facts. The Maynards have handled cases for me over the years where I ended up on top and where they effectively minimized my losses, due to the facts. I would GLADLY recommend both Patton Maynard and Creighton Maynard to anyone looking for a hard working straight forward attorneys.

I recently finalized my divorce after a yearlong process and couldn't have asked for better representation. Laura made sure that not only was I fully aware of my rights and responsibilities but ensured that my children's well-being (priority number one for me) was a primary focus in all discussions and court appearances. In the court room she is a professional through and through. No one wins in a divorce, but Laura kept me honest with myself and on track towards my goals to help me get the best outcome possible. I am truly thankful that Laura was honest with me, even when things were not in my favor, so that I could be prepared for each step of the process. Laura will definitely be my lawyer for any future litigation.

Beginning to end it was a bad experience. I knew my case would be difficult from the start because of my circumstances. From the failure to communicate on many court appearances (each time I wasn't notified until the day before) to the lack of updates on proceedings, lack of actions or even suggesting actions, to the lack of direction throughout my case, to the conflict of interest that was later discovered by me with the opposing attorney. Paul's mentor was my ex-spouse's legal counsel, I was not made aware of this until I did my own research. I couldn't figure out as to why was it my experience felt so off. My experience was less than desirable not because of the outcome but because of the process of getting there could have been better handled, planned and presented. I paid 5 figures to this attorney whom I trusted would act on my behalf, give legal advice, I never once felt that he and his staff were doing just that it felt much more like we were just going through the motions. In my experience the billing is flawed, and I found the rates disproportionate for the services provided. In my experience the communication for the billing was better than the actual communications of what was going on with my case. I unfortunately would not recommend this firm to anyone.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
