I had the privilege' of retaining Pat to represent my case. There were many complicated pension and property issues involved. Pat's experience in these matters proved invaluable in slicing through difficult issues. She brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to the table. If there is an area where we needed additional experts she has a great deal of contacts in specialized fields (QUADRO, Actuary... ) to draw from. She knows the players in the field and is aware of how an opposing council may utilize a particular resource. Ultimately this case was settled and I would recommend Pat for any family law needs.

Better late than never. I was cleaning out my desk procrastinating any way possible to keep from jumping into my taxes. When I ran across my Divorce file from 2005. Patricia A Newman handled my divorce and it was a pleasure to work with a person with her level of professionalism. She out maneuvered the opposing Attorney a every juncture and we attained a conclusion better than I ever thought possible. I called Patricia and told her how I appreciated her hard work all those years ago. She was a little overwhelmed but I believe in giving credit where credit is due. I hope this review is of some help to some poor chap that is in that dark place that I was in so many years ago.

I initially got in contact with Taylor for a consultation through my friend who had worked with him for her divorce . He gave me all of the information I needed to self-file. My ex avoided service and filed his own divorce papers in CA where he lives. So it all became very complicated. I came back to Taylor and hired him to help me navigate through it all. He could not give me any advice on CA, but he was very skilled at helping me know what to do to ensure jurisdiction for the case would be here in OR. I had lived here for 2 years with my 10 year old son. Taylor was able to successfully get jurisdiction changed to OR. My ex challenged it in CA, but we prevailed. This was an incredibly stressful and emotional experience for me that went on for almost 2 years. Taylor stuck through it all with me and was a calm and patient sounding board for my concerns and questions. He is a saint for all of the times he talked me off the edge and helped me through it all. He answered every call in a timely manner and swiftly followed up on all the necessary documents and filings needed. I feel so blessed to have had Taylor as my attorney and I would highly recommend him to anyone having to unfortunately go through a divorce. Taylor is incredibly skilled and compassionate. If there was an award for best Divorce Attorney in the state, Taylor would win it hands down.

Taylor was able to help me navigate a complicated international divorce. He was thorough in his research, which allowed us to avoid some potentially sticky situations, and I am very pleased with the outcome that we achieved. He was sensitive to my needs and always quick to respond, and he helped me to create a parenting plan that fits my family's unique circumstance.

Taylor, and his staff went above and beyond for our family this past year and a half. His compassion and understanding of family law made me feel confident that we had made the right choice in choosing our lawyer. What was supposed to be a fairly simple divorce modification, ended up being a lengthy process that resulted in a court hearing. Taylor was very well prepared for this and eased my nervousness by thouroughly prepping me beforehand. Without him we would not have prevailed in both the court hearing and supplemental judgement. I can’t express how fortunate my children and I are for what Taylor has done for us. We will always be grateful.. thank you Taylor.

I was highly encouraged to engage Krista Mancuso pending a divorce with children involved. I was hesitant and discouraged to do so from opposing party. But I am so thankful I did! This changed the entire outcome and dynamic of the divorce process. She gave sound advice. She clearly made known my rights, what I could expect to accomplish AND the limitations I faced. I initially engaged her for counsel only but I hired her immediately. She is realistic, genuine and easy to access with any questions or concerns. She really is engaging, and a joy to work with. Krista is extremely personable. She really does have you in the best interest and she made a rather painful scenario easy to navigate. She knows her stuff and she gets down to business. She is solid and strong, yet ever professional when engaging opposing party. She holds ground when mediating terms. When the divorce was all said and done I was so relieved and astonished at what we were able to accomplish together. I had more than enough to assist me starting a new life with 3 young children with a move across the state. You really do want her on your side! She is an incredible resource!

I hired Krista to help me get divorced from an abusive partner, and gain custody of my kids. It was a long and ugly process and Krista was my rock. She really knows what she’s doing - she knows the judges, knows their temperaments, and helped me set up a solid strategy to get what I needed. She is fierce, tough and relentless when dealing with opposing council, and didn’t waiver or compromise my terms. At the same time, she keeps things real and tells you what’s realistic and what’s a stretch. She always gave me all possible options and backed me up no matter what I chose to do. She’s extremely hard working, constantly supportive and available, and provided steady guidance thru my high-conflict case. And to top things off, she’s funny and can laugh with you through the grueling obsurdities of getting divorced. Krista really is fantastic.

I was injured in a slip and fall case back in 2014. When the insurance company would not quit harassing me, I decided I needed an attorney. I live in Seattle, so I started there. I called every attorney that was also licensed in Oregon (the accident happened in Oregon). I must have spoken to at least 15 attorneys who laughed me off because it was a slip and fall. They didn't want to hear about it, even when I knew they didn't have to prove liability, just damages. Some attorney in Oregon referred me to Jose. He listened to me, heard me tell him how liability was already clear and that damages was the only issue that needed to be resolved. Because of this, I got a settlement that was more than any slip and fall that I had ever seen. In fact, I have never seen a slip and fall win. If you have a case that you think will never be won, call Jose, and tell him that Terry sent you.

Jose was excellent in handling my auto accident case. He was very knowledgeable and personable throughout the process, and was always available to answer questions and help me navigate through the complex nature of my case. His team in the office was also stellar, and made the whole process go smooth. Although I of course wish I was not hit in a auto accident and hurt, I'm glad I had Jose on my side through the deposition and mediation, and that I was able to avoid going to court. I was satisfied with the settlement I received. I would highly recommend Jose to anyone looking for a personal injury lawyer.

Most lawyers are busy, which means they need to be careful how much work they take on. This review is based on my experience of two interactions (same case :)) spread over four years, which were very similar. I simply spent too much time chasing her, for responses to drafts, questions etc. I had a non-contested divorce but the slowness of response actually made it far more stressful (as my ex suspected that I was deliberately slowing down the process). Most of us prioritize based on perceived value - that's fine but be honest enough to say so.

Heidi was my divorce lawyer & really worked hard to defend my case. Her price was very low & always answered my emails & phone calls promptly. She was also compassionate & down to earth. The divorce process only took 4 months from filing to signing the final papers

Heidi Froebe handled my divorce. She did a great job, and I was very happy with the result. I saw the other review that was posted on Heidi's profile and was surprised not only that it was negative, but the ways in which it was negative. I'm guessing that reviewer has not dealt with many attorneys. Heidi is the best deal in town. She's been practicing for a long time, knows the judges and their preferences like the back of her hand, and charges the lowest hourly rate of any divorce attorney I've heard of. She also did a great job of realistically assessing my case and explaining the pros and cons of my position (maybe that's why the other reviewer was told s/he didn't have a great case???). The legal process takes a long time and lawyers (especially solos) can get overly busy. There were a few times that I had to call Heidi a second time to talk to her. I've had that experience with other lawyers before. Her low fees helped me not mind. Heidi got me a great result at a great price. I'd highly recommend her.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
