“I recently had the pleasure of working with Candace Jones and her team, and I couldn’t be more impressed. As a process server, I’ve worked with many law firms, but Candace and her firm truly stand out. They are extremely professional, organized, and efficient in their communication. Candace was clear with her expectations and provided all the necessary details to ensure the job was done smoothly. It was a seamless experience from start to finish, and I look forward to working with them again in the future. Highly recommend Candace Jones for any legal needs!”

The world’s best attorney I appreciate every time and effort she has done with my case I’ve been working with her for the past three years. She is the best attorney I could even ever ask for what these bad reviews is not true. She works with time patients and everything even our fees, she’s the best attorney, anyone can ask for the state of California I would choose her over anyone with my case she has done a tremendous job. She gave me patience and made me understand my case no matter how hard it was it was new to her, but she was the best attorney she figured it out and made sure to happen. I would not ask for a better attorney. All these bad reviews is not true at all. None was soever. She follows the law. She knows the court system well and if she don’t, she will figure it out and take her time with you including her feet is wonderful. She takes her time and everything I say again she’s the world. Best attorney I could ever ask for I wouldn’t trade her for nothing she’s got sent. God made her for a reason and gave her her job for a reason/career , I couldn’t ask for Attorney couldn’t God said I love you. Thanks for being my attorney. Love sharice

Wow! I’m not sure where to begin! I had the pleasure of spending two years with Candace Jones as my attorney in a Family law matter. This Attorney is extremely professional, informative, a beast in the courtroom, and a great person overall. I’m thankful that God led me to find her on Google. Best of all she is local! Great for men or women in need of an attorney. I am someone that appreciates Google reviews, but I also understand everyone doesn’t value the same wonderful qualities that Candace Jones brings to the table as an attorney and in general as a person. So, when making your decision while looking for an attorney, consider that everyone is not honest in their online reviews when it comes to the negative ones. However, I can tell you from my actual experience that she takes the time to fully understand the details of your case. She will do what she needs to do, and be where she needs to be, and handle what she needs to handle, as far as what was contractually agreed-upon. She understands the sensitivity of each case and takes her time to understand the details of each person’s individual situation surrounding their case. She is on time, and very smart, and great at what she does. I highly recommend this attorney to anyone. Be truthful in the details of your case and tell her everything so that she can help you. Take a breath…. And choose her! God bless

The attorney was dismissive and persuasive when it fit his schedule. He pretended as if he was concerned but at the end of the day I was mislead and misrepresented. Do not use this attorney. Do your research and you will see. Give your money to someone that is willing to work for you. The paralegal I had was amazing just not the attorney.

Mr. Symonds has been an excellent attorney. He has worked very hard even working on the weekend to handle my complicated, time consuming, case. I have had two other attorneys and have been around six other attorneys and I have never seen anyone work so hard and care so much for his client as Mr. Symonds. His communication is beyond excellent. He communicates through text, email, and the shocking thing is if he isn't in court or with a client he answers his phone calls. His customer service is exemplery. I researched over ten attorneys and found that Mr. Symonds met my criteria to represent me in a child custody and divorce case. He has been honest, detail oriented, professional, and charges a fair price for the amount of work he does. If you have a tough case like mine and you someone to fight for you then you want Mr. Symonds on your side.

My experience with Mr. Symonds was a complete nightmare! He was found via text message by opposing council. Once in his office, I found out that they are close enough to know the opposing council’s husband’s birthday by heart. Clearly this raised some red flags right from the beginning. However, proving things like that are very difficult in Court. Mr. Symonds, who was assigned to be the minors attorney, did not interview the minor's therapist who was involved with the case for the previous 4 years! Instead he kept telling me his own story how he got full custody of his own kids via a 730 evaluation. He clearly, in my observation, is still very angry at his ex who now has passed away and was unable to disassociate his past history from my current case. He also showed bias towards my ex, who was a former Marine just like Mr. Symonds. In my opinion he prides himself in his fee of $150/hour and he told me that now, since he is a minors attorney, the Judges have to listen to him, where they didn’t before. Mr. Symonds did not follow up with me about the case at all. I prepared a binder to show all of the e-mail communication between me and my ex. Mr. Symonds did not even read it, he seemed to have already sided with my ex as soon as he discovered they were both former marines, completely unprofessional! At one point he told me that I did not “please him”, this was behind closed doors of course. I contacted a paralegal in regards to filing a formal complaint with the bar, she said that filing the bar complaint would only put him through some ethics classes. Thankfully he is off the case now. The 730 evaluation was completely in my favor. Mr. Symonds incompetence and bias caused many people to suffer. It took a 730 evaluator who had 30+ years to step in to resolve the case. Mr. Symonds has very little experience. Please save yourself heartache and stay as far away of him as possible.

You will not find better representation. With two prior divorces, I have retained a few of them. Never have I had a better attorney, representative, and counselor than Eric Symonds. His legal ability is superb. He enjoys his profession which keeps him current and extremely knowledgeable. He is sharp, with an eye for detail that many lack. I won't waste your time and simply say; I am a single father to a three year old boy. I hold Legal and Physical Custody with an excellent parenting plan in place. I am a man awarded “Full” Custody of his toddler. How often have you seen that? Eric Symonds is my attorney.

Daniel acted as the legal representative for my husband throughout his custody battle. He has a profound understanding of the law and passionately defends your rights. Although my husband encountered several rejections from the courts regarding an increase in custody, he ultimately attained a 60/40 custody agreement and made substantial adjustments to holiday schedules and pickup arrangements after hiring Daniel. He’s great!

I am a client. Well until December 2, 2020 I was. Our and Steve Fox's offices are located in the same building. We paid money to Steve Fox he did absolutely nothing but talking. December 2, 2020 Around 5 pm I stopped by my office to pick up some paperwork. Steve Fox called my cell phone to inquire whether I was at the facility I told him I was right there in the hallway ready to leave the building. He opened the door and invited me in. I was showing him some potential case paperwork through the plastic shield on his desk. All of a sudden, the door wide opened without any notice and Steve Fox's drunk Secretary came inside. I turned toward her to say hi, she moved close to me with large bags of food and told me into my face with a threat in her voice: "you need to get out of here right now!" was shocked and said: "Excuse me?". She repeated moving closer to me: "you heard me you need to get out of here right now! Her voice was threatening. She looked violent! Her face was angry and red. I was afraid she was going to heat me. She looked and sounded drunk! She screamed at me calling me a Russian w...., saying that Russian people were not known for their intelligence etc. I grabbed my computer bag and my purse and ran out of the office. I was shaking... I realized that I forgot the car key and knocked on the door to get them. She opened the door loudly cursing; threw my car key with a heavy metal key chain into my face; and kicked me out of the door. I got hysterical and called the police to report a verbal abuse and physical threat. Steve Fox was just seating there doing nothing.

I retained Steve Fox a couple months ago and I am honestly thankful that I did. He is top notch and finds ingenious ways to get your kids back even if the mother is cray cray. He is punctual, well-spoken and has a great courtroom demeanor. His staff deserve 5 stars alone and we're there for me every step of the way. I highly suggest hiring Mr. Fox to take on your case cause you won't lose. He's the best in the AV and everyone in The Know knows it!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
