This was my second experience with a family law attorney for my custody case. I was represented my Ophelia Bernal-Mora. Unlike the first time I had an attorney, I walked away from the case feeling like I was represented by someone who clearly was representing my interests, knew what she was doing, and moreover, cared! She is extremely knowledgeable (heck she is board certified and worth every penny!) and when there is another modification or contempt issue filed in my case, she will be the attorney I go to without hesitation. She is very up to date on case law and the laws and I think knew more than the judge we had did. She does not overbill or nickel and dime on her billing like I experienced with my first attorney. It can get expensive, but I think you get what you pay for and for a board certified family law attorney which there are not many from what I could find, her prices are pretty reasonable. Her firm also no charged many many items throughout my case to my surprise and satisfaction. She is clearly not in it just for the money and wants to help people. I cannot thank her enough! Save yourself the trouble and don't let your ex hire her first! You will not be disappointed! She is very professional and does not get bullied by other attorneys.

I worked with Ophelia for my divorce. She did exactly as I asked and had great insights and advice when I requested. So responsive that I felt like I was her only client! I recently needed her again for advice 5 years later and she picked right up where we left off with same great service and responsiveness. No long, drawn out consultations to run up the meter, just great advice and execution! Don’t bother with anyone else.

There are not enough words to describe the work Andrew did for me! I WILL ETERNALLY BE GRATEFUL for the precise and over the top work him and his team performed. Andrew was the third (3rd) lawyer in my case, which was extended for years due to incompetent lawyers on both ends (my ex-wife and mine). Andrew handled in one week what others couldn't do in years, it was amazing! . Just the first day he responded and scheduled everything in no time. He made the process so easy to understand and follow up, his intentions are for the divorce ends in the best way possible and make the children involved get the best as it should be. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANDREW! His work ethics and dedication are second to none.

Orlando Family Team and Attorney Andrew Nickolaou have been so great to work with! The office staff is pleasant and responsive and the attention to my case has been very well handled with great detail. Mr. Nickolaou is so professional and I really appreciate this law firm very much!! Without him, my divorce would not have gone as well as it did. He is always responsive to my phone calls, emails and questions, and on many occasions tells it how it is without sugar coating it which sometimes you need to hear when going through such a rollercoaster of a time in your life. A+++ all around for this law firm. Thank you so much.

Where do I start? I hired Andrew 2 years ago for a divorce and he's been a godsend. I don't think I would've been able to get through my divorce without him. He was always available to speak with me and answer my questions even if they were silly. He is very sharp and on top of his career. He knows his stuff. I had a rather complicated divorce and a difficult ex and he handled it like a champ every step of the way. Im very grateful to have found Andrew and his firm. I really do think that you can't go wrong with hiring him. And even better he's not like many attorneys he's very personable and easy to talk to. Thank you so much!

Attorney Nickolaou represented me on a gender name change. He was so down to earth and understanding and knew his stuff about name changes and the gender marker change process. He also was not judgmental at all like a couple other attorneys I spoke too were when they realized I was transgender. I will certainly recommend Mr. Nickolaou to anyone and in my transgender community. Thank you for being so professional and caring.

Natalia was the epitome of what an excellent lawyer is. She was polite, professional and caring every step of the way. She answered all emails in a prompt manner and always took the time to talk to me if I was in the office even if it was only her paralegal assistant that needed to see me that day.

I met with Natalia when I knew it was time to get legal advice regarding custody and a review of the parenting plan that was in place when my ex was threatening to take me to court. Natalia was warm, reassuring, and drew me a very clear picture of the legal path ahead. I walked away feeling confident and certain that I was in good hands if I needed her to move forward with my case.

Sam was a relief from my crazy, stressful case. I went through a tough divorce, and things got really contentious. We thought things would be easy and amicable and then out of no where my ex started shutting down accounts, hiding money, and accusing me of everything he could think of. She had just the right touch of when to be aggressive and when to negotiate. She was so knowledgeable and great in court. She was clearly more prepared than the other lawyer and had all the evidence ready to go! What really stuck out to me is that she remembered my kids names, even when I called out of the blue. She was so open with me and transparent about what my options were and what it would cost. I couldn’t be happier with her, and I will definitely hire her again or recommend her to anyone getting divorced.

I've been a client of Jonathan's for about three months at this point. He's been nothing but courteous, professional, and accessible. He'll communicate with you directly, with no assistant to go through first. He has followed through with everything he promised since the day I retained him. If you're facing dark times and the state is coming for blood, you can trust him.

Jennifer placed me in the best job I’ve ever had. My worst day at my current job is 100 times better than the best day at my last job. She spoke with me at length in order to gauge where I was at in my career and weeded through several jobs to find the perfect fit. She’s always available and takes any concern you have seriously. She will not let anyone stay in a position that isn’t benefiting them. She will make sure you are taken care of. I would recommend everyone I know to NorthStar Legal if they need job placement!

If I could give the Troum law firm more than 5 STARS I would (I’d give them 10 STARS). The team including (Mark and Julie) were empathetic to my specific situation, always made me aware of all options available to me and helped ease all of my apprehension of the unknown. Julie is a God send !!! She is the one who made me feel comfortable to hire the Troum law firm from the beginning. She was patient, thorough, detailed, understanding and always so empathetic to my feelings. In the beginning of my divorce I had no idea what to expect and Julie continued to walk me through it with no hesitation. Now looking back it was the best decision I made to have her and Mark on my team. Mark is the sharpest, smartest and most knowledgeable lawyer. He was always personable , readily available, tactful, patient and his demeanor always put me at ease that I would get through any situation seamlessly. He was so patient in his approach and I never felt rushed or like a number. His years of experience helped in every situation because he was able to anticipate every outcome. If you’re debating on a law firm look no further these are not only team of experts but they treat you like a human being and specifically tailor to your situation. The Troum Law Firm saved me and changed my life for the better and I will be forever grateful to Mark, Julie and team. Terrible service. The "manager" hated that I needed multiple options for dates (I'm sorry I have to work and don't have endless availability). As soon as I was able to pick a date and time where the lawyer and I were available, I booked it however due to an emergency, I asked to be rescheduled after I sort out the emergency. Reschedule, not cancel. You would've thought I insulted her. She then told me to use another attorney because of so much back and forth on the dates among other things. When you have more than 1 person with busy schedules, it comes with the territory that back and forth. Needless to say, I will not be using them for anything at all.

Holly doesn't reply to emails she doesn't keep you in the loop about your case until the day before the due date. If you hear from her its to ask for documents you gave her weeks ago. She charges for the same services over and over again. Holly is always scrambling at the last minute. She seems to be afraid of trial and scared to upset the opposing lawyer. I should have done my home work before I hired her. She has really bad reviews and a lack of experience. How can you be an attorney when you don't like conflict. Holly would always threatened to pull out if you asked her about the case - she would tell you "if your not happy you can get another lawyer" hmmm after you have taken thousands of dollars. What a great way to make money!! DO NOT HIRE HOLLY !!!!

Where to start, I hired Damon after my previous attorney was fired from her firm. Damon stated he was a bulldog and for the most part he was, what he was not is prepared. Damon waited till the last before everything and filled paperwork without reading over it. Damon stated we had to have a GAL come in, and recommend one and I signed a 2 paragraph order, several days went by and I was able to see the judges order of appointment and it was over 3 pages long. I asked Damon to fix this immediately and he refused. His refusal has cost me over 30k. Damon was never prepared for any hearing and even missed one because he double booked. Damon even went on to grant apposing councils request without even asking me. Damon even allowed an appraisal of my home even after I told him over 10 times, No! While getting ready for hearing he waited till the day before to file paperwork because he was “too busy” and once I saw what was filed I immediately called and emailed him. Nothing he filled was correct and he used opposing counsels number and evaluations, even splitting my premarital retirements. I asked him to fix this and he refused. He then fired me after I threatened o go to the Florida BAR about what happened and changed me for his mistakes. Do not hire Damon!!! Run!!!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
