Attorney Kathy Erickson is a professional on every level. She is fair, upfront, honest and sincere. She handled my case with the highest concern for myself and my child. Her knowledge about the legal system is unparalleled and her compassion and understanding for her clients is profound. It's rare to find a lawyer who not only represents you well, but has a natural ability to connect with you on a personal level. That understanding is crucial in achieving the best outcome possible for all involved.

Kathy Erickson's experience with problematic personalities helped me confirm my suspicions that I had married a covert and manipulative abuser. She accurately predicted my ex's behaviors during the divorce process and helped me navigate a minefield of control tactics and protect my children. Kathy's investigative and documentation skills ultimately helped me expose my ex's true character to the court. I highly recommend her to anyone who is trying to defend their children from an abusive parent.

It’s my absolute pleasure to recommend Blake Landon and his law firm of Philip & Epperson for legal services. I hired Mr. Landon after another Attorney with over 27 years’ experience was not getting me results with my legal situation. The end result for me was a WIN to whichI truly believe due to Mr. Landon and his firms’ partners who gave some guidance in my legal situation ending a long and very stressful nightmare. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Mr. Landon and his firm, his legal abilities, skills and professional demeanor came through for me when needed. His staff and Paralegal Deidra Coe was professional and caring in a very stressful time for me. I came to know Mr. Landon as a truly valuable asset to anyone needing Mr. Landon and his firm. He is honest, dependable, and incredibly hard-working. Beyond that, he is an impressive problem solver who was able to address complex issues with strategy and confidence. He is a person and Attorney who is true team player and someone you want on your side, and always manages to foster positive discussions to bring the best out of the situation. Without a doubt, I confidently recommend Mr. Landon and his firm for any of your legal issues and situations. I know that he will be beneficial to your legal situation. Doug

I went with McCraw Law Group when I was rear ended in a car accident over the summer and they were absolutely wonderful to work with. The paralegal I worked with, Mary, was attentive, efficient, and genuinely cared about helping me and my case. I was highly impressed with the efficiency and communication from my lawyer, Ian as well. If you are in an accident, do not hesitate to hire McCraw Law to represent you, you won’t be disappointed. I am grateful to have chosen this law firm and can’t recommend them enough!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I cannot say enough about the exceptional care and service I received from McCraw Law Group. After being rear-ended by a commercial tractor trailer, my life changed forever due to the injuries I sustained. Their consistent warmth, compassion, and professionalism shone through at every step of the process. Every department I worked with embodied the same high level of dedication and empathy. Communication was always clear and timely, and I always felt that my case was in the best possible hands. McCraw Law Group fought tirelessly to ensure I received justice and the resources I needed to move forward. I am deeply grateful for their unwavering support and for helping me find a sense of closure. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to those I worked with directly: Ian, Kyra, Vickie, Bryce, Charlie, and April. After paying a total of $300 for two consultations, 15-min each, at a different law firm and not receiving sufficient guidance on how to move forward with my situation regarding a real estate matter, I decided to continue my search in finding what I deemed to be adequate legal counsel. Therefore, I conducted an online search and came across the Law Office of Bradley Voyles. His reviews seemed extraordinary, and I was eager to give his office a call in hopes of setting up an appointment to speak with him as soon as he was available to meet with me. When I called his office, I was hoping I would be able to quickly pay my consultation fees and schedule an appointment with Mr. Voyles to have my issues addressed within the next 1-2 weeks or so. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out from his receptionist that although Mr. Voyles was currently in court at the time of my call, I was promised he would call me back later that same day to go over my concerns. From the moment I called Mr. Voyles's office, I was immediately impressed at how courteous his staff was, and in how responsive Mr. Voyles was in getting back to me in the same day. I was not expecting this level of service at all! Furthermore, when I called his office, I was surprised that at no time during the call were consultation fees ever brought up. Usually law offices want to charge your credit card lots of $$$ before you can even just say, "hello" to an attorney. But this was not the case here. I genuinely felt like Mr. Voyles and his staff's primary concern was just immediately addressing my concerns and nothing more. In fact, when Mr. Voyles called me, he spoke to me for over 40 minutes. He also asked me to email him documentation and real estate contracts regarding some of the matters I discussed with him, and after wrapping up our conversation, he still never asked for any consultation fees. I'm honestly in awe at how patient Mr. Voyles was with me during the call and with how informative he had been. The level of legal service I was provided by him was unparalleled to anything I've received elsewhere. I honestly cannot see myself entertaining another law firm on any related legal matters, just based off the recent experiences I've had with Mr. Voyles and his staff. Mr. Voyles, this is how you create relationships that are mutually beneficial between the attorney and client! Thank you so much for everything you've done to help me! Sincerely, Andrew L.

Working with Natalie Paul was a true pleasure. She and her team(Stephanie Fay) handled my probate case promptly, professionally and compassionately. After the death of a parent, things can get REALLY confusing for the executor. Along with the inevitable workload of managing my father's affairs to completion, the probate process is a black hole of never ending tasks and spontaneous issues that I'd never anticipated. Over a period of about 6 months Natalie communicated effectively and was able to walk me through the intense and laborious process, all while empathically answering my continuous flow of questions. Her help was very much appreciated!!

From the second I walked into their office I knew this was the team I wanted working with me. They answered all of my initial questions and concerns regarding my situation. Being a difficult situation I did not want it dragging out for an extended period of time and Kayla and her team did an excellent job getting it handled and finalized in a timely manner. I’m big on communication and everytime I reached out with question I had an answer same day, whether it was directly from Kayla or a member of her team. They made sure I felt comfortable with every decision they made and gave me their professional opinion when it came to my thoughts on certain terms. I would pick this team to represent me again if ever needed.

My husband and I worked with Leah on a child custody case that involved two different states. Prior to retaining her she assured us she had worked on cases similar to our and that she knew how to handle the case. It took over an entire year and almost three times what she estimated the entire process would cost. We went to court once to have our case dropped and completely redone because she had done everything wrong and did not file the correct paperwork. She continued to tell us that the issues were those of the court loosing paperwork. She then charged us MANY HOURS to fix her mistakes and redo everything the correct way. We even had to hire a lawyer in another state to handle the out of state cases. She assured us should could handle everything, but could not. The second lawyer chanrged us $500.00 and she charged us over $8,000.00 for an uncontested custody case. She also did not tell us some bills were taken out of our retainer. These bills were suprisingly the months she had to redo all of her work. We did not find out she charged us to redo everyting until the case was done and we were expecting our retainer reund.

No one sets out on he wedding day thinking I'm going to get a divorce someday. Sometimes the inevitable happens though and that day does happen. When I reached that day in my own life, my #1 concern was that my son was effected as little as possible and his best interest was put first. I interviewed several attorneys before meeting Sharon Ramage. After meeting with Sharon I knew she beyond fit the bill. Her background in Social Work gives her the background to have your kids interest covered. Our divorce was very amicable and other than a few things my ex and I agreed on all points, because of this Sharon offered to handle the entire divorce. This not only saved us thousands of dollars, but allowed us to fast track a lot of the process. Since I hired her, she couldn't give my ex advice on anything but would send & submit things for both of us. Her office staff is just as amazing. I worked closely with McKenna & Betsy on several occasions and they were just as wonderful. So if you do find yourself in need of legal counsel for you family matter, I can't think of anyone more qualified than Sharon Ramage. I wish you all the best!

Recently hired Sharon to help me in a battle for custody of my son. My situation was complex to say the least but from the beginning she provided me with nothing but confidence, reassurance and truth. I think the best quality is her ability to express to you blunty where you too, are at fault as much as it can feel like a hard reality in the midst of a struggle it is calming and easier to approach the courtroom with your eyes open to every aspect behind it, especially in a case that is not only involving yourself but the well being of your child. Highly recommend her. Not to mention Betsy Ober is always right beside Sharon they mesh well to put you at ease before, during and after your hearing.

Absolute worst lawyer ever! Doesn't explain the steps of your case. Is very hard to communicate with since he barely responds to emails/phone calls. For my case he put my business appraiser two weeks after due date on docket. Lost my witness, $5000 dollars for appraisal, and around $100,000 business value since the judge didn't allow the testimony or appraisal paperwork. Since my husband didn't provide most of the needed paperwork after the discovery phase, we had two 'motion to compel' hearings. Twice Eric did NOT ask for the missing documents at all, even though he recommended these hearings. Again, another waste of time and money. For the final court hearing he was absolutely not prepared and did a horrible job presenting my case. Since the divorce outcome was so bad, he recommended that I'd appeal the judge's decision. Really? You mess it up and blame the judge? I would never, ever recommend him. One would think that $450/hour would bring some knowledge and expertise. Alas!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
