I cannot begin to explain how pleased I am with Brian! He was very readily available and sufficient whenever my situation was laid out on the table almost 7 months ago. At a time where I didn't know what direction to look or turn Brian took initiative in leading me the correct way. I highly HIGHLY reccomend him to everyone and anyone who is in the need of lawful guidance. To this day, even after my case has been closed for several months now he still has open arms for and questions or concerns I may have.

I found ONE!! I found an honest Lawyer. He not only returns phone calls but he is also available to update his client on the status of the case. Brian handled a personal injury for me and my five. I was extremely satisfied with the way Brian worked. The lawyer is Brian Putnam with his office on N.W. 63 St, in OKC. He doesn’t rob you when the time comes to settle up at the conclusion of the case. I have used a lot of lawyers over the years and Attorney Brian Putnam is the best. Need a lawyer? Call Brian Putnam! I hired David in 2014, a year and a half we had our trial. The long wait was just circumstances, not David. He is not a dirty lawyer, no tricks etc. He was extremely honest with me, with the other party, the judge and other lawyers. I'm a father, I had joint custody from 2008 forward. We had a GAL. In 2015 we had a two day trial. I received sole physical and legal custody. The mother also had to pay $8000 of my legal fees. There was a lot of manipulation, lots of badmouthing. Patients is key in all this. David was very good at keeping me calm, giving me advice, sometimes what seemed like daily. He answered my calls way more often than most lawyers would. Very personal relationship with David was established. David far exceeded my expectations, he earned every penny I gave him and then some. He was always on time, always called when he said he would. This was a long painful experience but David made it pleasant from time to time. Thank you David for all you have done for me and our family!!!!

I hired David Walk to write my Last Will & Testament, Living Will, and Power of Attorney, and I had a very positive experience. Mr. Walk explained the process and legal language in simple terms, which was important to me because English is my second language. I felt that he really listened to what I wanted and he made me feel like an important client. I am happy with the Will Package and would definitely hire Mr. Walk again.

In a very unexpected situation, I chose Banner to guide us through and represent my child. We were disappointed to find out that the $5000 retainer we paid was completely gone before charges were ever filed. And for what ? A few emails and phone calls and 30+ hours of checking OSCN? We never asked him to check OSCN daily and the contract doesn't say he was going to check OSCN daily. And we told him that we were already checking OSCN daily. And that is clerical work. $300/hr to check OSCN? There hasn't even been an arraignment. The attorney didn't go to court even once. The contract stated that there would be an accounting and refund upon request. We never expected the attorney would fill the accounting with 8 pages of checking OSCN. We trusted this attorney to take care of our child in a time of need and feel like our naivety was taken advantage of. Interesting. As a response to your response, if I am not a party to a contract then I would like a full refund of the $5000 that I paid. My name was on that check. And the word retainer is misleading. Just take it out of your contract and call it a fee only. I read the contract and I was ok with it this whole time, because I was under the impression that the $5000 was a retainer and that unused/unearned funds would be refunded. Yes I understood an additional retainer would be due if charges were filed, but I never understood that meant the first retainer was completely used up at that point. My child and my husband were both at the initial consultation and we all believed the same. We never thought it was just a $5000 charge before ever even filing an entry of appearance as the attorney. We thought the $5000 was just to retain legal services and that fees would be deducted from the retainer as legal services were performed. We never, ever thought we were going to be billed $300/hr attorney fees for $20/hr clerical work or that it would cost $5000 for a few emails and phone calls. I guess we learned to always get an attorney to review our contract with an attorney before signing.

This law firm was referred to me for a name change. Brady opened my case, was meticulous in explaining the process and proactive in addressing my questions. Heather Sizemore on his team handled the court appearance, and was absolutely wonderful and provided immediate follow up. The paralegals communicated with me by text before the court date, and everyone was synchronized on a joint text chat - this firm is incredibly easy to deal with, didn’t have to chase them once and treated me like a big client at all times. Highly recommend!

She's highly respected and will tell you like it is. My ex didn't want to give me a dime after being married for 10 years. Carla was able to get me what was rightfully mine. The process of divorce is mentally draining, but Carlas strength and passion also helped me personally through the process. I came out of my divorce feeling strength I'd never felt before and a huge portion of that was due to Carla! GO WITH CARLA!

Aaron Compton was fantastic to work with. When I had an unjustified lawsuit brought against me, he stepped in as my council and handled it masterfully. He did his research to familiarize himself with the plaintiff's past litigious behaviors and knew exactly what to expect. On the day of court, Aaron came with a plan A, B, or C based on what direction the plaintiff chose to push the issue, and he was fully prepared for each scenario. Luckily, only plan A was needed, and the plaintiff skulked away, dismissed the suit, and will likely re-think the way they do business going forward. I have the utmost gratitude for Mr. Compton for representing me with his legal expertise, knowledge of human behavior, his tenacity, and overall genuine desire to see my legal rights and property protected. Highly recommend!

Michelle was recommended to me, by a coworker in my US military unit. He said that she represented him very well, in his divorce case. I am thankful that Michelle accepted my case. (By the way, she has a great staff, as well.) I was going through an unwanted divorce, after 30+ yrs of marriage. Michelle listened well, understood the situations, and coached me on options. I told Michelle that I did not want to be vengeful or hurtful toward my wife, and Michelle understood, and helped me navigate that path. The divorce was dragging on, and she helped create some forward momentum, to get the process going again. She negotiated some great wins for me, in the divorce process, helping greatly my financial future. Michelle is a "go-getter", with "bulldog tenacity". She is fast-paced and aggressive (in a good sense), and was honest with me, when I needed that kind of coaching. She is fair and sensitive, and is dedicated in working towards a favorable solution for her client. The mediation process was an interesting experience, but again, Michelle represented me well through that, as well! I'm a 30yr veteran of the military, and recognize people who are skilled, and do their jobs well. Michelle is one of those people! I highly recommend her!!!

Michelle was appointed to my divorce case and almost acted as a second attorney for my ex wife. Her bias was beyond obvious to all parties. Not only did she defend my ex wife’s marijuana use in court (a violation of the temporary order), she also discarded a failed alcohol test after her weekend with the kids and ignored every single concern I had about the kids well being, both mentally and physically. Michelle is a disgrace to her profession. If she is assigned your case, fight it as hard as you can. Your kids will thank you one day!

My husband and I have had an amazing experience with Ms. Didier. When we met her, we thought all hope was lost in regards to an extremely complex family case involving his daughter. She never settled for less than she knew was possible, she kept the child’s well-being at the forefront of her mind, she thought outside the box, and she never lost hope for an instant. The moment she learned the complexities of the case(daunting to others, but not her!), she became visibly excited and reassured us she would and could fight for our family. She worked tirelessly to ensure that no detail was overlooked, no concern went unaddressed, and no shortcuts were taken. I can never recommend Ms. Didier enough, she has been absolutely stellar and she climbed an impossible mountain to give us all our family back.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
