I decided to choose Mr. Hirsch after seeing his reviews online and the amount of success he has brought to his clients in the past. Brian is a knowledgeable, experienced, humble, trust worthy, and a patient lawyer to work with. Through out the entire last year, Brian has never failed to satisfy me by giving me information I needed to be prepare ahead of time. He would answer my questions, file all documents, give me head up all in a timely manner. During mediation, I was Uncertain and unaware of many issues which that he patently explained to me until I was Satisfied with his answers. He gave me examples of similar cases and success rate which put my mind at ease. I am very happy with my divorce settlement agreement regarding custody, visitations, support, assets division, property division, etc. I was saved the hassle to go to trial and by having a successful mediation. Brian is not only persuasive, knowledgeable yet an firm attorney, he also charges a very reasonable price. This combination is hard to find and I was lucky to have that benefit. I would in a heart beat recommend Brian to anyone seeking an attorney. You can not go wrong with him!

Brian is calm, keen, and fair. Going through a divorce is horrible and having an attorney that one can trust completely is key. Brian has years of experience and understands the law and the nature of people. My recommendation would be to hire him, and then listen to him and let him do his job. Brian is very respected by the judges and other attorneys (even those on the opposing side) which speaks volumes about his work ethic and personal character.

I had found Danielle while searching for a divorce attorney online. I was impressed with her reviews and the outstanding results she had performed for her clients over the years. The amazing part is that her performance is supreme yet her charges are very reasonably priced compared to many other attorneys and that is very difficult combination to find in a successful attorney for any client. I have been working with Danielle on my divorce case since Dec 2018. For any challenging and Unusual circumstances during this time, she has never failed to promptly respond to my messages, emails and phone calls. She has always explained to me throughly the steps we will be taking in the process so I was always up to date. She has always kept my mind at ease by providing mental support as well as preparing the correct documents, submitting them, being in touch with my former husband’s attorney all in timely manner. while this is the most draining and difficult time for anyone going through a divorce, I knew I could ask her anything and I will be answered shortly after. With her extreme knowledge, she has helped me get a really decent share as far as support, alimony, asset division, children’s visitations, Property settlement etc and saved me from the hassle of going to trial. During mediation, I felt very comfortable with her explaining the process to me. I trusted the decisions she made for me As they would benefit me In long term. She has already resolved many cases prior to mine very successfully so I knew I could trust her. Not only is she an amazing and most knowledgeable attorney I have ever come across, but she is also very friendly, sympathetic, kind hearted , patient and a fun women to work with. I remember during mediation, I would ask her the same questions many times so I could understand them well. She would without any hesitation, explain things to me over and over and then still ask if I understood it better now. I am very happy where I am today in life after the divorce has been finalized smoothly. I do not need to worry about finances and do not have any uncertainties about my children’s secured future because of Danielle’s efforts to get me my fair share for long term. I would Highly recommend Danielle to anyone without a second thought as you can not go wrong with her work!

Danielle is great! I recently finalized my divorce which lasted about 1 year. From my first interaction with her, she was very attentive to my wishes and understanding of my hopes. She was direct with me when my ideals were not realistic yet patiently willing to work with me if I was still determined to stay a certain course. She listened to me when it was just she and I and fought for me when she interacted with opposing counsel. She’s articulate, sharp, knowledgeable, intuitive and most importantly, honest. After all was said and done, I ended up in pretty much the exact place that she foresaw from the beginning. I am deeply grateful for all of her hard work and diligence.

This review is also long overdue, partly, because there are no words that can truly express my thanks and gratitude for all the work Danielle did for me. If you are searching for an attorney like her, your circumstances are probably overwhelming and complicated. She is honest, responsive, timely, thorough, fair, and has the ability to make you feel your case is the only one on her schedule and you know that is not so. She keeps you grounded and focused on getting through tumultuous times and does not hesitate to consult her colleagues as needed. She is well thought of and respected by the office staff and that is an additional comfort as you are working through your resolution. I wish her the best always and if you find that you are in circumstances requiring her services, I hope this helps in your decision making process. She is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and will work with your best interest in mind during probably one of the most difficult situations of your life. Many thanks Danielle!

I went through a divorce after almost 10 years, with an 8 year old daughter. It was super scary and unsettling until I had my consult with Nicole and Jenni... She knows it all and helped me work through things QUICKLY and PAINLESSLY - I couldn't believe it, after horror stories I've heard of friend's divorces.

Nicole Burns came recommended to me by the attorney I had (and trusted). When my attorney decided to leave law to raise a family, she told me that Nicole was a lot like her -- she takes the high road and doesn't get into dirty fighting with other attorneys. Exactly right. Nicole is a class act and works hard for you. She's a tough negotiator. And she really listened and fought for me and my child. This was a custodial agreement that needed to be modified and she worked hard to do what was best for my child. My child is on the spectrum and she was empathetic and understanding with how to work with a child under these circumstances. Best of all, she brought perspective and kept me on track. Her paralegal was also super helpful -- she did more to help me with the interrogatories and discovery than I had experienced with other law offices. I highly recommend Nicole and her team.

Nicole has represented me as my attorney for the past 4 years and has done an exceptional job doing so. I have previous experience with a terrible attorney and truly applicate the fact that I believe I have one of the very best. Nicole has helped me navigate though the legal system to overcome so much, I am grateful for her experience, knowledge and professionalism which has enabled us to achieve justified results in my case. I have recommended Nicole to others in the past which also share my appreciation for her talent as an attorney. I highly recommend Nicole to anyone who is seeking representation and only wish I would have found her initially.

I was referred to Hirsch & Ehlenberger by a family friend in early 2017 to handle my divorce. Among the attorney's I met and worked with, was Sharon Pederson. During the course of the divorce proceedings, which is of course a very tumultuous time, Sharon took the time to answer all of my questions regardless of how big or small they were, and was the calming voice when times were stressful. Sharon was very responsive to phone calls and e-mails and provided many options to me and also listened to my viewpoints on how to proceed during the course of my divorce. Sharon is very knowledgeable in family law and allowed me to work hand in hand with her and her firm to successfully rectify a very stressful situation. I would recommend Sharon's service to anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation.

Sharon worked alongside my primary lawyer, Brian Hirsch. The case involved my ex suddenly stopping spousal support with out going through the courts and then suing me to stop support altogether. She was my main point of contact and did most of the research thorough discovery. She was always available and supportive. She did an excellent job of combing through the discovery and coming up with data for argument. I always felt like this team was listening to my concerns and input. The outcome was favorable for me. I will hire them again if it ever becomes necessary.

I contacted Kristina five years ago when my ex and I separated. I specifically hired her because of her vast knowledge of military law. Since my ex husband was in the military, I knew I needed a lawyer such as Kristina. From the moment Kristina took my case, I knew she would fight hard for me. I was so impress with her attention to detail such as her research on topics such as spousal support and what exactly am I entitled to in regards to military benefits. She never gave up on me and my case. It paid off because in the end, I received everything that we requested in the divorce proceedings. My kids and I will be forever grateful to Kristina. Because of her, I am able to give my kids the life they deserve.

Kristina, supported me through a very complex divorce and custody case. The situation was very unique, complicated and emotional. Kristina demonstrated her expertise command of the law and the court systems. Kristina made this difficult situation as palatable as possible while providing me a sense of comfort that she and her firm were doing everything in their power to represent my best interests. Kristina's court presence was exceptional and it was obvious to me that the judges had great respect for her litigation skills and her command in the court room. The outcome of my case was beyond what I had expected. As a father, I was awarded full legal and physical custody of my son which is generally unheard of in the state Virginia. Also, my financial interests were protected beyond what I had expected. Cannot thank Kristina enough for her hard work and diligence with my case.

Kitty was a godsend for me during my divorce. She was wonderful, tactful, and empathetic during the entire process. She saved me from myself more than once, when I let my emotions get the best of me during the arduous legal process. Her guidance and strategy were always explained clearly to me, and she fought for me & always had my best interests in mind. I really appreciate her guidance and advice during this difficult process; I was lucky to be in her good hands. She was a calming voice of reason in a wild storm. She also kept defense in check and would not back down. I admire her integrity, empathy, and confidence - she’s one of the best attorneys I’ve ever had! The whole team at her office was awesome - I’ve already recommended them to friends and family. Thank you so much for everything you have done for me, Kitty! Despite my complicated case, Carole significantly made progress towards a settlement by working with the opposing counselor and moving things forward. I was working with a different attorney and unfortunately, things weren't going anywhere for more than 6 months. When that attorney left the office and Carole was assigned to work on my case everything shifted for the better. She is very cooperative, responsive, and very approachable at any time to answer questions or even just rant about the situation. Thanks to her communication skills with the opposing counselors, My case was settled and I got divorced without compromising any of my rights.

I highly recommend Lisa Levy as an exceptional family attorney Ms. Levy took the time to truly understand the particulars of my case and the psychological profile of my ex. This enabled she and I to be of like minds in bringing a settlement which was advantageous for myself and supports the best interest of my child. I would not have been able to fight for my custodial rights and prevail in the process without Lisa looking out for my best interests. Ms. Levy educated me on legal strategies and state statutes beneficial to my case. Her insight into the mindset and precedents of the judge in my case proved invaluable. I felt comfortable bringing my concerns to Ms. Levy, relying on her ability to anticipate problems and present the best solutions in managing a complicated relationship with my ex. Choosing Lisa Levy as my attorney resulted in a carefully crafted Order designed to save time, money, and emotional distress going forward.

I had two consultations with Ms. Ehlenberger and both opportunities were bad experiences. As other reviews mentioned, Ms. Ehlenberger was more interested in having a friendly relationship with opposing counsel than in protecting my best interests. She also didn’t have the answer to many of my questions and was not pleasant at all. I had a consultation with another attorney and realized immediately the huge difference in knowledge and treatment.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
