Spencer and Liz (paralegal) are a fantastic team. I'm understating their importance to each other. I'm a firm believer they compliment each other very well. Spencer was hired as a guardian ad litem. The recommendation came from the attorney of my son's mother to use him to represent my son. So I owe him a huge thank you. For those who may be unfamiliar, the purpose of a guardian ad litem is to represent the minor's best interest. Spencer was detailed and thorough. He met with my son on multiple occasions. He spoke with additional professionals who offered perspective. A recommendation wasn't rendered until Spencer felt he had as many answers to the questions as he needed before making a decision. I'm grateful and appreciative he choose to be thorough and exhaustive in the process. Fast forward to the final result, my son is now in my custody. If you're looking for an attorney who doesn't cut corners or take short cuts, who genuinely attempts to make the most informed decision using as much information as can be gleaned, he is the attorney you'll wish you had.

Spencer came to us early in his career. Not only did he impress us with his straight-forward honesty as to the outcomes, he has a kind demeanor and you know he really cares about the law and what is right. I do know him outside the courtroom, but that is the reason I had him by our side when our family needed a lawyer. Unfortunately this is one service that excellence is something you never have to use again. This is our case. Many years later and we are back in court with Mr. Ricks defending our side. No matter the outcome, we know he did his job more than any lawyer we've ever had; and we've had a few.

Spencer is a professional, knowledgeable attorney who is also a pleasure to work with. He has an in-depth understanding of Utah family law and has been a savvy, yet honest advocate for me throughout my divorce. Spencer has integrity. I always know he has the best interest of my son at heart, rather than simply going for "big wins" for the sake of prestige. Spencer has been a transparent and timely communicator. He keeps me well-informed when we have to make difficult decisions and I am never left in the dark or worried about the progress of my case. His paralegal Liz is also excellent in this area. Every step is a team effort and they work well and quickly in tandem. Spencer also has a great sense of humor! He appropriately keeps things light in otherwise heavy conversations. I would highly recommend Sencer Ricks as an advocate for anyone seeking representation in family law in the state of Utah.

If I could give Matt 10 stars, I would. We have a Washington case that was transferred to Utah and after a lot of searching for a good attorney, stumbled upon Matt, who previously practiced in WA before moving to Utah. This man is worth every penny and then some. He is professional while also being realistic and keeping humor involved. He has never given us expectations of something that didn't happen. He has fought for us and gotten results in record time that we weren't able to get with previous attorneys. Matt has gotten more results in 1.5 years than we previously managed to get in almost 10 years. He is logical, efficient and has a keen eye for detail. I work in the legal field in WA, but once it was transferred we had to find a Utah attorney so I'm extremely picky and have pretty high standards. Honestly, if you don't hire him it's your loss, and if your ex hires him you're probably screwed. He's that good.

Ryan recently helped me with a very contentious divorce. He was supportive, responsive, and very knowledgeable. I initially thought I could simply use the online, self-serve resources that the court system provides through the OCAP system. I had so many questions and Ryan answered all of them. He took the information I had gathered on my own and helped me understand what I needed and how to strategize to get what I was hoping for in my divorce. He kindly and patiently explained my misunderstandings and I was so grateful for his help. Ryan has a ton of experience and makes the process very easy. His online document sharing portal is user friendly and made things simple. He was available when I needed him, let me cry on his virtual shoulder, and never made me feel like I was a burden. I could not be happier to have found Ryan and I highly recommend him. Thank you Ryan for taking such great care of me and preventing me from having to go to court to get my divorce resolved and finalized quickly.

Jenkins Law thank you so much for helping me and keeping me informed every step of the way! No surprises and I knew exactly what I was getting and paying for! Amazing Attorney! Should I ever find myself in need of legal representation you will be my first call! Now stop reading this post and give them a call. You don’t want to wait any longer

I was guided through the whole divorce process with Jacob. He did everything in a timely manor and did his very best. He always took the lead on what I wanted and he always made sure everything was done how I wanted. Great communication as well. I got a fair child support and alimony because of him. I would definitely recommend anyone going through any divorce to have Jacob help them.

I hired Jacob to represent me in a family law case my ex-husband initiated. Living in Missouri and having to hire an attorney in Utah was a little stressful, but Jacob made the process go very smoothly. We had an initial consultation over the phone where we discussed the case, my thoughts and feelings, and what the next steps going forward would be if I hired Jacob. Jacob really listened to me, understood where I was coming from and the situation at hand, and was straightforward about how he thought the case would turn out. After hiring Jacob to represent me, we communicated pretty regularly through email, texts, and phone calls. Jacob was very conscious about his fees, and he did his best to keep costs as low as possible for me. I really appreciated this and didn't feel like he was cutting corners or slacking in any way to keep costs low. He kept me in the loop regarding the case throughout the entire process and he made sure to submit my answers and evidence to the court in a timely manner to make sure we were within deadlines. When my court date finally arrived, Jacob and I had a brief phone conversation before our WebEx session to make sure we had everything covered and to discuss the argument Jacob would be making. Jacob stayed on track and argued every point we discussed. Though we didn't get the exact outcome we were hoping for, Jacob did a great job minimizing my loss and I was happy with the outcome we got. Jacob did a great job representing me in this case. Should the need arise in the future, I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again. He listens to his clients and is always asking for input and direction. He treated my case like we were a team and I really appreciated being involved in what was happening.

I consulted with Jacob when he was a fairly new attorney outside of family law. He struggled with advanced legal arguments (anything other than the usual "failure to state a claim" reply) and was not really able to form a cohesive structure in his writing. He lacks a logical mind that excellent attorneys have as the research and writing that we consulted with came back to that of a first year law student. I am rating him average, because there was nothing above-average in his work.

We called and asked if they could write a cease and desist letter. A Jennifer Later emailed us that an Adam Kunz charges $100 for 30 minutes. When a law firm won’t tell you if they can assist you or not without charging a fee it’s a scam.

My fiancé hired Mary Bevan to help her with a custody matter. After the first hearing we had concerns with Mary's approach and confidence in the court room, after the 2nd hearing we realized she was as good as having no legal counsel. She has no control whatsoever in the court room and she allowed the apposing lawyer to walk all over her. It got to the point where it seemed like Mary didn't believe my fiancé and constantly kept telling her to be honest in order for her to be able to help. My fiancé never lied and was honest from the start. We ended up firing her and hiring a new lawyer. It took the new lawyer 1 hearing to get the case resolved, Mary had 7 months and didn't do anything.

I found Pearson Butler via MetLife legal plan. Connected with Russ to get our family trust in place. Straight forward to complete, no complaints there. Reached back out to Russ about a completely separate matter unrelated to estate planning. His response was "I do not practice law in this area and thus, have not idea." I guess I just had more expectation than a lazy response with typos. Too much to ask if there's someone he can put me in contact with? I will be moving on from Pearson Butler and find another firm to do estate planning in the future.

Russell took my case and then took a very circuitous approach to resolving what (turned out to be in someone else's hands) a slam dunk resolution, only to announce that he was quitting the law. He then charged me his full rate to spend many hours transferring the case to my new counsel, who looked over Russell's work unable to understand much of his strategy. The ethics of taking my case knowing he was preparing to quit law (he's apparently since returned) and then changing me plenty for his decision, are deeply troubling to me. I cannot recommend Russell Gray.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
