I can't thank Stuart enough for his help during what at first seemed to be an amicable divorce, that later turned out to be difficult and challenging. His knowledge and experience of the law eased my stress and anxiety throughout the process and instilled a great amount of trust. Throughout I was always well informed, my phone calls promptly returned and all my questions and concerns were addressed. I was extremely satisfied with my representation and the counsel I received. Stuart was worth every penny I paid him! That said, I highly recommend the Law Offices of Stuart C. Axilbund for his legal expertise, to anyone who wants a qualified attorney who will watch out for your interest, who can be though when necessary, but who is also understanding and compassionate. Great Attorney!

I have already recommended Stuart multiple times already since my 2018 divorce. I found Stuart to be extremely responsive to all my communications. He provided sound advice for my situation, and his years of experience and expertise were obvious. Of equal importance, he was also a good steward of my funds, not allowing our case to go down roads that would not have had beneficial results. I am truly appreciative of all he did to guide me through what was an extremely emotional and difficult process. I would recommend him without reservation.

Andrea Sugar is the best lawyer I saw ever, professional, responsible, reply quickly and very cooperative and compassionate. I had a divorce case with her. It was done so fast less than 6 months. She was very professional and experienced in the court. It was so easy and fast case. And my financial experience with her was perfect. I was so worried about this part. At the end of my case, I could not believe how my case was that fast, successful and it did not cost me that much money. It was a very perfect experience with her.

Extremely professional and compassionate! If she says is going to do something, she is doing it NOW! Andrea Sugar handled an out of state custody/visitation for us and we were over 700 miles away so if not for google sights such as this one, we would not have found her and went with her on solely the reviews. I feel we hit the jackpot finding her and getting the exact outcome we had hoped so much for!

Jennifer has represented me for years now in various family law matters in some very traumatic life events, and I am better positioned to remain strong due to her exceptional legal counsel and extensive experience. She is incredibly intelligent and operates with tact and care in everything she does. Jennifer is also extremely personable yet professional and provides transparency and reassurance throughout the entire legal process. I could not be more thankful for Jennifer's representation.

My experience with Jennifer was wonderful. I was divorced for three years and was no longer receiving adequate support for my child. Child support was not an issue at the time of my divorce and a few years after. However, things changed and I needed support for my child. I was extremely afraid and sad that I needed to embark on legal proceedings to garner support. I didn’t receive any recommendations and was cold calling family law attorneys that I found on the web. Jennifer was one of the lawyers I found during my search. I was initially impressed with her credentials and her level of experience. Jennifer returned my call the same day I left her a message inquiring about her services. During that initial phone call she pulled up my case information from my divorce while I was on the phone with her. She reviewed my file and gave me great advice during our first conversation. I knew from the first phone call that she would be amazing. I met with Jennifer a few days later, with fears and tears. During that meeting she let me know that I had a great case, along with what to expect, how long the process would take, and what I may have to endure. I was extremely unsure of my rights, but Jennifer provided excellent legal counsel. Jennifer provided me with a sense of ease that I desperately needed. My case lasted almost a year, during that time Jennifer was always available, always provided everything I needed to know and what I needed to do along the way. Jennifer is excellent, she’s tough, but also diplomatic. Not only did Jennifer get the support that I was so unsure about, she shored up my custody agreement. I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone looking for an understanding, supportive, knowledgeable, lawyer that will fight for you.

My attorney, Debra Cruz, saved me & my son's emotional and physical well being- literally. My life was completely torn apart at the beginning of my separation. There was absolutely no light at the end of my tunnel. Debra's education, expertise, & emotional support saved me from losing my son. She walked my family and I through each & every step- always guiding and supporting me. She never failed me- not even once. The court proceedings got extremely confusing & technical for me to handle. A lot of divorcees choose to attempt to "go at it" alone- under no circumstance do I recommend that. Words could never begin the gratitude that I have for Ms. Cruz. And although my case has since been closed- Debra still makes her self available to me for questions &/or concerns about the future. I have battled many many issues both personally & with my ex husband & without Debra, I don't necessarily know I could have made it through. I still have to go back to court at some point late next year- and I can only pray that she and her team are 100% behind my son and I again!

I was referred to Mr. Murahari by another attorney who was going to be retiring soon. This was the BEST decision that I could have ever made! From the very first conversation that we had, I knew that I was in excellent hands. My Disability case was not only a lengthy one, but it was also one with many obstacles and challenges. Often times, I felt like just giving up and throwing in the towel. But when you have an attorney like Arjun Murahari, you come to realize that this is definitely not an option! When I tell you that this young man is a fighter, it is truly an understatement. I witnessed firsthand his courage, determination, dedication and tenacity in fighting for others! Had it been any other attorney, I know that my outcome would not have been a successful one. From the bottom of my heart, I will always be eternally grateful and thankful unto God for Mr. Arjun Murahari and his entire office staff and team, especially Grace! You haven’t experienced Grace until you’ve met Grace! Their professionalism and integrity are not only exemplary but also unmatched. My prayer for you is that God would continue to keep HIS hand upon each of You and allow you to be the Blessing and Answer to someone else’s Prayer as you were for me! With sincere and heartfelt gratitude….Rose Chew

Dempsey helped me resolve issues pertaining to my divorce and custody dispute of my two year old son, and by way of referring me to another attorney also helped me resolve debt / financial ailments. As a 25 y.o. (at the time) dealing with divorce, I initially was very embarrassed of my predicament however I never once felt judged or dismissed by Dempsey. Additionally I had a hearing that was supposed to last 1.5-2 hours which, I kid you not, ended up lasting 9. I really appreciate that she was able to be present and attentive during that unexpected turn of events. Ultimately I was awarded exactly what I was petitioning for. I'm happy my son and I can now move forwards with our lives.

My experience working with Dempsey Nash has been professional and therapeutic. Dempsey is extremely patient and kind as well as professional as she gathers pertinent information and works toward resolution. She works from an emotional and sensitive platform and really understands your pain and challenge in making difficult decisions. She understood that despite the incredible pain, fear, anxiety and abuse I was enduring, I was still very concerned and worried about my ex-partner and wanted to work with him despite the mental health issues he expressed. She was sensitive and worked to help me understand my options and bring me to reasonable and supportive conclusions. She takes time to listen to you and your story and create a plan that works for you. Working with Dempey provided and opportunity to explore my relationship from a perspective that included my empathetic emotional feelings but was also objective and fair. This is difficult to do when you have endured years of abuse and control by a mentally ill individual. Dempsey never condems and always listens. She is as much a psychological counselor as she is a legal guide. Working with Dempsey was as healing as working with my counselors and you will learn about yourself and what you have endured in addition to finding your strength through the process because of her compassionate and passionate style. I feel so very fortunate to have found Dempsey to work with during one of the most difficult times of my life. I highly recommend consulting with and working with Dempsey Nash. She is a unique blend of a compassionate, intelligent, caring and confident humility...a rare find in the legal world. Elizabeth

I would highly recommend contacting Mr.Leppler, I reached out to his office after I was involved in a accident, Barbara from his office called me back immediately and then I received a call from Mr.Leppler as well right after that. I spoke with him and let me tell you I think he was the most honest and upfront attorney I ever met, I work for attorneys but in a different field of law. He even gave me advice on what to do and how to handle my situation even though he said I would not need him. Mr.Leppler then told me if I have any questions or need help I could even reach back out to him. He obviously cares about the person and situation and not about just the money. I felt such a weight lifted off of me after our conversation. I would highly recommend contacting his office if you want someone who is going to have your best interests in mind and that goes above what he has to and who is very honest.

That won't happen to me, I said. I am not of that race, nationality, or ethnicity, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I don’t practice that religion, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I’m not of that sexual orientation, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I’m not part of that income bracket, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I don’t have that disability, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, until it was physically in my face, had me backed into a corner, and was spewing utter vitriol at me. That won't happen to me, I said, he'd never lay a hand on me, until one day the physical aggression caused me physical pain and injury. That won’t happen to me, I said, until thirteen months ago, when I found myself on the phone with a domestic violence hotline. That won’t happen to me, I said, until thirteen months ago, when I found myself hurriedly packing a bag and fleeing my home, and boarding an aircraft out of state, because I feared for my life and safety. Fifty years ago, when my mother and her family escaped their war-torn country with nothing but the clothes on their backs and one bag per person due to religious persecution, I never imagined that one day, fifty years into the future, that I too would one day find myself following in her footsteps, quite literally. I never imagined that I would one day find myself fleeing my home with nothing but the clothes on my back and one small carry-on bag, and boarding a same-day aircraft bound for 1,000+ miles away, because I too feared for my life and safety. Thirteen months ago, when I found myself on the phone with a local domestic violence agency in my state, I never imagined that the proverbial door would get slammed in my face, on the basis that I earned too much money to qualify for any help or support. Since I was born and raised abroad, and with my own family still living halfway around the world, it was in that moment that I truly realized, and that it genuinely sunk in, that I was going to be completely and entirely alone in the process of escaping the cycle of violence. In 1848, divorce was practically unheard of. Most states had fault-based divorce laws outlining the requirements and criteria permitting divorce: lunacy, adultery, desertion, or cruelty. This meant that couples could only pursue divorce IF they could prove, in a court of law, that one or the other had committed one of these offenses. However, given the laws (or lack thereof) governing women's rights and freedoms at the time, divorce was far more complex for women, as they remained at risk of being unable to regain their last names, unable to retain property acquired prior to their marriage, or unable to obtain custody of their children. These fault-based grounds are in stark contrast to the no-fault system that exists across most states today. Today, after decades of tireless advocacy, and thanks to incredible attorneys like Laurie Wasserman and Virginia Yeoman, people are no longer required to remain shackled to their spouses, and have the freedom to escape the cycle of violence. Thanks to the fabulous support of Laurie and Virginia, I've not only been able to survive, but I am slowly on my way to thriving again. The words "happiness" and "divorce" are the last two words you'd expect to see in the same sentence, but that is exactly what Virginia and Laurie have facilitated for me. For anyone considering engaging the services of Laurie Wasserman and her team, from the bottom of my heart, I wholeheartedly recommend them and their entire office. They'll not only save your life, but they will also help re-unlock your door to freedom, health, independence, and joy again.

Before I hired Martha, I was working with another attorney for my divorce process, and I just didn't feel like they were on my side and looking out for my best interests. Someone referred me to Martha White, and once I met with her, I made the decision to end my retainer agreement with my current attorney and hire Martha White. Martha White listened to me and to my concerns and what I wanted out of dissolving my marriage. She was always responsive to my calls or emails and took the time to explain things to me, so that I understood all of terms and possible outcomes of this process. I feel that she helped me reach a fair settlement and I was happy with the final settlement agreement. I wish I would have hired her in the first place. She didn't drag the process out any longer than it needed to be. I was very pleased with her representation of me in my divorce case. If I ever would have another family law issue, she would be the first attorney I would contact. You can't go wrong having Martha White as your attorney.

If I ever would have another family law issue, she would be the first attorney I would contact. You can't go wrong having Martha White as your attorney.

I have had two consults with Mr. Mosson to discuss a complex separation/divorce situation. I appreciate Gregg's approach in terms of looking at all the sides, anticipating the outcomes of different approaches, and looking at the specifics of my particular situation in terms of advising on the options that would be in my best interest. Gregg is a good listener, clear communicator and very responsive. I am grateful that a friend recommended him to me.

After consulting with over a handful of lawyers, I found that Gregg was going to be the best fit. While my case was relatively simple [no children] Gregg worked more as coach providing me the necessary legal "mumbo jumbo" to insert into my separation agreement to make it fit with the courts requirements. He also remained available for questions during and after the divorce proceedings, reviewed all the necessary paperwork, and provided assistance for filing. While he did not have to represent me in court, based on his work ethic and conversational skills, I'm sure he would be exemplary! I was glad to work with Gregg directly, and not communicating through various different junior associates as at other firms...

Kathleen and her staff were integral in the reason why I was finally able to sign my divorce papers this week. She answered all my questions, was kind with difficult messages and even picked me up on morning when I was experiencing a panic attack before a court date. I would recommend her to anyone in MD for divorce. Thank you so much!

Ned wasn’t bad. He cared I could tell. Kathleen didn’t. I paid over 20,000 in less than 6 months. Our court date came and I had no attorney to stand by my side. I was told I had a balance of another $4000. This was days before our hearing. Take that for what’s it worth. Don’t come here.

Ms. Fleming was amazing from the beginning to the end of the entire process. Her experience and knowledge really showed while fighting for me to obtain fairness and she was successful in surpassing my expectations. Ms. Fleming was consistently prompt at returning my emails and phone calls and she demonstrated an outstanding amount of patience when discussing all of the legal aspects of my situation. When it came time to meet with the opposing lawyer Ms. Fleming was hard nosed, dominant, and all business while remaining very professional. There was never a doubt in my mind that Ms. Fleming was going to work hard for me and fight for me to achieve our goals. Within the first few minutes of meeting her I felt a rush of confidence and security which really served as a big “pick me up” and I knew from then on things would be okay. I highly and fully recommend Ms. Fleming to anyone in need of a solid, caring, and established attorney.

The part of me that was anxious and fearful of the child custody process, court system and laws significantly relaxed the day Becky took over my case from another attorney. I couldn’t have picked a more professional, committed and “all-heart” family law attorney. On day one, Becky immersed herself in the facts of my high-conflict case and put her knowledge, experience and passion for her work in action. I never doubted for one moment that the best interests of my children were her principle and guiding goal. Becky has unique experience and comforting insight into the workings of the local court system, which proved exceptionally valuable to the results she achieved in my case. She navigated me through the complexities and emotions of the custody and child access evaluation process, patiently answering all my questions and educating me in words I could understand about family law and procedures. Becky was always prepared, promptly returned phone calls and emails and consistently and strategically followed through with our discussions. Becky was confident when she spoke and communicated with the opposing attorney and my ex-husband in straightforward, effective and results-driven terms. She knew when to be assertive and when to reasonably compromise. Becky’s facilitation and negotiation skills and abilities are highly effective. Becky was a true and devoted advocate for me and my children.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
