Working with Heritage Law has been so comforting. I did a consultation and then I was assigned to Amanda Holder and Alicia Olney for my custody case. Going through a custody battle is hard as it is, it’s stressful and emotional. Working with Alicia on the day to day and being represented by Amanda took almost all of the stress away. Alicia is quick to respond and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions or bothering her when I didn’t quite understand something. Amanda is fantastic in the court room, well spoken and quick witted. This team showed me so much compassion and care while navigating the court system for me. They had incredible advice but also allowed for autonomy and backing up decisions I needed to make. I would recommend them over and over again.

Jordan, Rosé and the entire team were AMAZING from day one! I can not say Thank You enough. From the moment Rose answered my call in May 2018 to when we settled in the Fall of 2022 they treated us like family and made my daughter and I feel as though we could always trust them. We had gotten in a head on car accident in Vancouver, WA that I was not at fault. I was driving and my 13 yo daughter was in the passenger seat. The other vehicle that was driving the wrong way in our lane towards us hit us head on at 35-40 mph. Once we decided to hire Jordan and his team they always followed through with everything they said and kept all promises made. THANK YOU JORDAN!!!!

She is highly respected by everyone, and always has your best interest at heart, but will also be incredibly honest with how things look and what you should expect, not giving false hope or empty promises. So grateful to Ali and Tina for all of their hard work and would recommend her to ANYONE!

I retained Kalka for assistance in fighting a protection order filed against me during a divorce case. Kalka was extremely thorough in gathering only the facts in the case. Though frustrated that I was having to spend time supplying information to defend myself against false allegations, Kalka was adamant in supplying her with all the information she would need to be successful in her defense. During our court appearance, Kalka arrived confident and prepared. She did an outstanding job of presenting the situation, stating the facts and providing all documentation to back up the facts, resulting in the case being dismissed. I am very grateful for her representation and would highly recommend her services to others.

I was already well into the process when I was referred to NW Injury Law Center. My feeling is had Jesse been holding my hand from the beginning things would have gone much smoother. If you've not been in an auto accident lately, there are many hoops to jump through and nobody is volunteering any information to help you. Being the professional he is, Jesse picked me up and dusted me off and got me through to the end. After this experience, I will recommend to any friend or family member to get an attorney straight away to help you through this situation. And I of course will recommend the amazing team of Jesse and Mindi for their dedication, encouragement, concern and professionalism throughout.

Robert Russell and his office were spectacular. I would hands down hire him again and highly recommend his office. He thoroughly outlined the process and what was to be expected. He is a straight shooter, to the point, and very professional. He is a great communicator and listener. He called me on time for every phone call we had scheduled, he was prompt in responding to my emails. He followed up with me timely and immediately let me know the results of my case when they were available to him. I am very pleased with the outcome as it was just as he expected it to be. He was highly compassionate and caring about my case and situation. Hands down the best lawyer I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

I am a 71-year-old man. After 30 years of marriage, I was ambushed by my ex-wife (and her two children) with a petition for divorce. Being retired, my situation looked financially bleak if they got their way. Homelessness appeared likely. It was always about the money to them. I was seriously cornered, so I got Faye Breitreed and Chriss Elliott in my corner. Faye, Chriss, and my McKinley Irvin team turned this franchise around and saved whatever is left of my life! In the end, I was awarded 70% of the community property AND spousal support. My case lasted almost five years but was well worth it! — Mark

Dave has really made a difference where my previous attorney failed. Attorney Dave Gross and his paralegal Karrey Komp are not only efficient at what they do but they are caring, professional, and pro-actively involved. It is a rare thing to find an attorney who really cares and Dave and his paralegal do. Makes all the difference. I highly recommend for family law matters and I will continue to work with him with any future issues that may arise.

My case did not have precedent as it relates to family law in Washington or probably anywhere else. Alone this was a certain loser either through stifling court proceedings, or general lack of support for this type of sophisticated knowledge of law. My hopes were high but expectations low at the beginning, I am truly grateful for finding David Gross and Karrey, they not only figured out a path to achieve my desired outcome but then achieved exactly what those desires were. We didn't spend a single day in court but truly worked as partners in negotiation, knowledge of the law and patience. Many clients I'm sure are emotional when it comes to family court proceedings, I won't exclude myself, but with David and Karrey, supportive and results oriented, we collectively walked through to the finish line. I only wish there were a higher star rating to offer, what he was able to achieve can't be understated and while I hope I don't require their services in the future, Dave would be the first call I'd make, they've truly made it a pleasure working through the matters now firmly behind me.

I have been working with Scott for over a year now in my ongoing family court dealings. Scott was the first lawyer I have worked with that thoroughly impressed me with his communication skills. In my previous experiences, I rarely ever heard from my lawyer themselves, but Scott has always made it very clear that he is 100% there for me throughout the whole process and to answer any questions I may have. Scott truly listens to my concerns and addresses each one without skipping a beat. He is very professional and comes to court hearings fully prepare - which gives me the full confidence needed when going into things. It can be stressful looking for a lawyer that you can trust with your very important case, so take my word when I say it - you can stop looking and fully put your trust into Scott. Thank you Scott for all you have done for me and my family - HIGHLY recommended.

Avoid William Ball, unless you're looking for a milquetoast middleman who masquerades as a lawyer. I had the misfortunate of hiring him from Beaty Hatch during my dissolution. I went in the assumption that he was going to fight for me and resolve the dissolution in a timely fashion. That is all I asked for in our initial meeting, regardless of the outcome. After just two months, I was so baffled by his unresponsiveness and lack of interest in the case (he'd routinely take days or weeks to reply to even simple questions, if he'd respond at all) that I asked him what additional compensation would incentivize him, to which his secretary replied that she would print out my last email for him. Imagine hiring a lawyer for 300 USD / hr who is so disorganized that he can't even keep track of client emails and needs a secretary to hold his hand. Well, you don't need to imagine. You can just hire William Ball. As time went on, who the lawyer was between us become increasingly blurred. Numerous emails to the judge and opposing counsel were just him forwarding text I wrote with his name attached. Here are more instances of poor work on his part that I'd like to highlight. 1. Before the first "mediation" session with the opposing counsel in mid-April, I had made it extremely clear that I wanted to resolve the dissolution as quickly as possible. By that point, opposing counsel had two months to prepare. So what does Mr. Ball do just a week before mediation? He agrees with the opposing counsel to push it out two more weeks, so she can prepare more! I immediately emailed him asking why on earth he would do that, to which he basically replied, "oops, too late." 2. Mr. Ball failed to inform me that I was allowed to hire my own business valuator to valuate my LLC. I only found out later because another lawyer told me. Considering that this valuator's work contained factual errors and bad analysis, this kind of information would have been incredibly useful. Another lawyer reviewed Mr. Ball's work shortly after I fired him. Upon learning about his failure to recommend our own valuator, the other lawyer commented, "[This] seems UNBELIEVABLE and incredibly negligent." 3. During the second "mediation" session, Mr. Ball was given an opportunity to question the valuator's work. His efforts were nothing short of embarrassing. Instead of homing in numerous lines of evidence indicating that she had put little effort to her analysis or had relied on problematic assumptions, he spent forty minutes tossing her softball questions that did nothing to bring into question the credibility of her valuation. 4. The verdict of the "equalization" provided by the arbitrator included false information about statements made during "mediation". What did Mr. Ball do in response? Absolutely nothing. Not a peep of protest, despite acknowledging that the arbitrator's decision contained factual errors. I was dumbfounded. At that point, the reality sank in that I was just another case he could cram into his schedule and extract money from. I had spent months thinking, "OK, soon he's going start fighting. He's just waiting for the right moment to pounce." Nope. By the time I realized I had been had, it was too late. The total amount I had to pay this firm for such low quality work is nothing short of horrifying. I gave a long list of grievances regarding his performance. His equally unprofessional manager, Valerie Nack, responded to with a cheeky claim that I'm merely disappointed by the outcome of the dissolution. No, let's not mince words: even if I had "won" (if such a thing can even happen in divorce), Mr. Ball is still incompetent. The outcome was unjust, even by Mr. Ball's own admission, but that is the arbitrator's fault, not Mr. Ball's fault. Mr. Ball was asked to perform a job with a certain level of quality and professionalism and he failed to do it. Not once have this firm offered any sort of apology. Not once was I offered a refund of any kind. Instead, they chose to harass me with collections.

Avoid William Ball, unless you're looking for a milquetoast middleman who masquerades as a lawyer. I had the misfortunate of hiring him from Beaty Hatch during my dissolution. I had a great experience working with Jane Clark's firm. My attorney, Josh, was very helpful and quick to respond throughout the entire process. Most importantly, we felt comfortable working with their team. They were very thorough and helped my husband and I understand each part of the legal process. They truly are experts in medical malpractice law. I would absolutely recommend their firm to anyone considering a medical malpractice lawsuit. I don't even know where to start if there is more than 5 stars I would give it. If you want an attorney to present you and when they walk to the court room everyone chocks on air look no further because Faye means business and she knows what is she doing. Faye is really rare gem who truly cares about her clients and believe in their case. Because of her I have fully solo decision making for my son educational and Medical. I mean Faye is Vice President, Clark County Bar Association, you cannot buy this position you can only earn it with an excellent work. Faye is such an amazing attorney who you would hire and sit and relax and have 0 worries. She goes above and beyond with her clients and she always make sure you leave her office with clear picture and understanding everything. I used to have old attorney who only cared about money and she won't even show up to the case she send her paralegal. But with Faye omg less than a year when she stepped in my divorce case got resolved and she I got everything I asked for and my divorce been going on for 3+ years and it's super messy. I can't thank her enough.

Erica was incredible to work with. My ex was very hard to contact and tried to drag things out as long as possible and she did a great job keeping things moving. She handled my getting frustrated over the situation so well and now that I’ve reached the end of that tunnel I am so grateful to have had her help. I absolutely could not have gone through this without her.

I was caught in a bind when my ex sprung on me divorce papers. With only 5 minutes notice, Erica jumped in and helped navigate a complex and somewhat unique relocation and custody case. She was a leader in making my case to the court, and in the end we ended up with a resolution I felt very comfortable with. I would definitely work with her again if needed in future custody conversations.

Recently, I needed to revisit an extremely difficult family law issue. My previous experience with the case was terrible - including both my former representation and the opposing counsel. Additionally, the opposing party (my X-wife) has been and remains uncooperative. For these reasons, it was a difficult decision to revisit an already extraordinarily painful legal conflict. When searching for representation via phone consultations, I was immediately impressed by Danielle's sense of fairness, her thorough understanding of the field, and her obvious intelligence. Mostly, I was impressed by her integrity. I hired her because of these characteristics. As I hoped, we were able to navigate a variety of unfortunate tactics presented by the opposing party. In my opinion, because of Danielle's excellent representation, the conflict was resolved in the best way possible.

Danielle Paradis is absolutely amazing family lawyer and person. Extremely dedicated to you and the best interest of each person and the children involved in a case. Taking time to dilagently and explain all options that is in the best interest of myself and the children while taking into consideration the appropriate ways to go about each situation in the rights of all involved. Exceptionally thorough, every "i" is dotted and every "t" is crossed. Danielle supremely implemented and filed the documents needed to get me through the hardest time of my life.. I am truly grateful and thankful I had Danielle on my side. I highly recommend her to anyone whom is seeking in my opinion one of the best of the best..

Georgias the best decision I’ve made and I wish I’d have found her sooner. I can’t stress that enough. Georgia and Alicia are incredibly responsive (Heritage Family Law). They understand my case - better than I do with details I forgot I mentioned at times. She answers questions I come up with extremely timely. My ex husband is relentless and it’s motion after motion. I have extensive DV and child custody issues that she’s handled with compassion and grace. Georgias timely in court, holds her composure, and most importantly- ready to argue. She’s the 3rd family lawyer I’ve had so it’s not my first rodeo. My ex husband has put me through court where other lawyers couldn’t keep up. I’m SO glad to finally have the representation that matches my needs.

— Mark

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
