I spoke with Leigha about various child custody questions and concerns that I was having with the other parent. She was honest, polite and up front on all of the possible outcomes. These characteristics are so important in a lawyer when one needs to go to family court. Thank you, Leigha!

I have nothing but positive things to say about Leigha and everyone else I came in contact with at High&YounesLLC. I honestly don't know what I would have done without Leigha. She did such a great job on my custody case. She is professional, hard working, articulate. I really cannot thank her enough for everything she has done for me I really appreciated what an attentive listener she was and I never felt judged when sensitive material was brought to the table in my long drawn out custody case. Ms Wichelt worked with me every step of the way and I felt as though she respected and took into consideration my feelings, thoughts and opinions. She always gave great legal advice and I commended her for being reasonable and realistic about potential outcomes. As one can imagine in certain cases, such as a custody case or divorce, emotions can become heightened and she was always a sound voice of reason yet remained focused on the goal. She was always a perfect balance of professional and also very approachable. She always got back to me in a timely manner which was important to me. Leigha exceeded my needs as an attorney and I'm very grateful to her for that. I would, and have, highly recomended her and her team for any of your legal needs.

I found my lawyer Tosha Heavican through a recommendation from another firm whom didn’t offer the specialized conservatorship law practice service that I was seeking. Once I started working with Tosha she took me under her wing and provided me with not only excellent service, but education to my level of understanding to how the conservatorship laws work within Nebraska. I have worked with her now for the last three years and have already developed a great client relationship with her that I intend to keep for the years to come. Everyone at the firm is very kind and has been available to help me in different areas in law as I face new issues. I’m grateful for them all and would recommend their superior service to anyone!

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the representation I received from this attorney. Like most of you I looked at the reviews and tried to make an educated decision based on previous clients and initial gut feeling being that I've never done this before. When trying to hire an attorney you would hope that they would fight for you in ways that you cant fight for yourself, Ive paid this attorney over $7k for him to not only be outdone by the opposing counsel but also for him to tell me "we don't have a strategy, its black and white and for the judge to decide". Everything he "tried" to do was always counteracted by the clearly superior opposing counsel with no real response other than him charging me for an email with minimal/ basic advice that I could have figured out without having to pay him for. To put it simply I have paid this man thousands of dollars in this 7 month process to only be at the same place I started... just with less money. Please do your homework and set clear expectations of what you want otherwise you will end up like me having to fire this attorney and finding another one. I don't need anyone to care about my circumstance just do what you're being paid for and do it effectively. I would not recommend hiring this person unless you have unlimited funds and don't care about wasting it.

My ex-husband and I used Chris Pomerleau for Mediation and it was such a simple and easy process. Chris and his paralegal, Lisa, are so easy to work with and they were on top of everything. They guided us through the process with great, open communication. Both Lisa and Chris are so organized and told us exactly what was needed, what the process was and kept us up to date on how things were going. My ex-husband and I have two children together and they are, of course, our main priority in this. It was comforting to know that Chris and Lisa had the same priorities in such a big, life changing event. The divorce process was actually one of the easiest things in regards to our separation. I highly recommend Nebraska Legal Group and Chris Pomerleau.

Hello. My name is Dirk and I was unexpectedly served divorce papers by my wife a few months ago. As I never saw this coming, & since young kids were involved, you can imagine how frantic and emotionally distraught I was. Additionally, I was informed that there was to be an emergency custody hearing on Tuesday…note: it was Friday afternoon when I was served. Therefore, I had to research and retain a Family Law attorney by Monday (only one day before the hearing). Thus, I sped through Google looking for any family lawyer with a decent Google Review Score (4+ Stars). I didn’t know what I was looking for, but I really needed help. Now. I called a few firms Monday morning. The fee to retain their services varied (with one stating they needed $4,500!). I politely rejected that offer. Now, however, looking back…maybe I should have gone with the bigger firm requesting the larger retainer. The firm that I landed on was Wes Dodge Law. To Wes’s benefit, he did agree to meet me with no prior notice on that Monday. His initial willingness to jump through hoops, so I thought, was an action that I greatly respected at the time. We met in person, and after talking for about 10 minutes, I noticed that Wes was somewhat of a stoic individual. Not unprofessional, but the way he interacted was cold. Seeing how I was still an emotional wreck due to the divorce revelation, I would have presumed his “bedside manner”, as I would of any Family Law Attorney, would have been a bit better. It wasn’t. The retainer initially charged for my case was only around half of the $4,500 retainer cited by the previous firm & sounded like a huge break for me. I agreed and then between Monday/Tuesday was able to coordinate with Wes to compose an affidavit to rebut the statements made by my wife. Flash forward, it has now been two months since I retained Wes, and am dropping his legal services, TODAY, after a frustrating phone call where he, once again, could not offer any solid guidance for legal questions that I had and actually mocked my financial status… Remember that emergency custody hearing I mentioned, where Wes was compensated to defend me as his client against the false statements made in an affidavit by my wife? Yeah, not so much. I literally could have chosen to defend myself, not attend, and the results would have pretty much been the exact same. What did I pay you for Wes?!? From that hearing, and written into a Temporary Custody Court Order, my wife was granted 100 Physical & Legal Custody of our children until a future trial date could be scheduled; based on nothing more than an affidavit of false statements. Apparently former clients of Wes Dodge have also aired their grievances online through reviews saying, “Our case has been going on almost a year and a half and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has gotten accomplished”, “In two years he did very little. He wouldn’t return my calls for weeks then he would bill me for it.”, or even “…he will take your money and try to make you feel stupid”. In Summary, after working with Wes for two months, I hold deep-seeded client concerns due to: 1) his inaction (how do you go to a custody hearing and win literally NOTHING for your client), 2) his frequent random side-of-the-mouth comments like “…well it seems that you’re having financial problems regardless” (you’re a lawyer Wes…not a poorly trained life-coach. Please keep your unhelpful opinions to yourself), and 3) his professional apathy and/or inability to take charge and guide you through the legal battlefield during one of the worst possible times in any person’s life (“I honestly can’t say when you’re going to have a (Divorce) trial scheduled” What?!?). I would strongly recommend seeking family law representation elsewhere. I say that as a father, MBA, & Navy Veteran.

If you want an overpriced dude who is aloof on deadlines, sits on important emails for weeks or months, doesn't take your concerns about your child's safety nor your concern for the other party's mental health seriously... well, this is your guy! (Don't take my word for it. Call and ask for his voicemail. His outgoing message will tell you all you need to know about his promptness) He received discovery request from opposing counsel and didn't send it until two months later, a full month after it was due back. Didn't wait on making sure to charge for it though! Sat on an important email about schooling decisions until 9:30 the night before the deadline. What did the opposing party argue in court? That I'm not involved in our child's school because I wasn't adding to the conversation, when I wasn't even aware of the email until three weeks after it was sent! Told him in our consultation there were serious concerns for mental health. Does he request mental health records in discovery after you continually express those concerns? Nope! After you express your discontent with that decision, does he file a second set of discovery? Yep, but after the deadline to compel — again, weeks later — so the other party didn't have to supply them. Don't ask for an apology though, lest you get an incredibly ironic lecture in "accountability". I'm sure he will comment on this reply with something similar. Maybe he will say you're uncooperative because you're upset with his lack of promptness. I'm sure his response to this review will be prompt though! Gotta keep up appearances, right? Maybe your kid(s) will get lucky and be worthy of the money you're paying him. Don't bet on it though.

After I filed my complaint for dissolution of marriage pro se, my husband retained a “fathers’ rights” attorney who quickly turned our case into high conflict litigation. Because I knew that I needed an excellent family law attorney to move forward, I called Mr. Philip Katz, a Martindale-Hubbell Preeminent Lawyer with an AV rating, the highest level of professional excellence, skills and integrity. Although I was a mess, Mr. Katz patiently listened my concerns and immediately started work on my case. Based on his vast experience and knowledge of how the judge might rule, Mr. Katz developed a legal argument that made it likely that the judge would rule in my favor. Opposing counsel came out swinging, but Mr. Katz, calm and persistent, presented the best legal argument and judge ruled in my favor. For these reasons, I highly recommend Mr. Philip Katz to anyone looking for an attorney to represent them in a high conflict case. In my opinion, he is a Rockstar Litigator.

What a Child Support Lawyer Can Do for You

A child support lawyer specializes in legal issues related to the financial support that one parent provides to another for the upbringing of their children. These lawyers assist with establishing, enforcing, and modifying child support orders, ensuring that the financial needs of the child are met, including housing, food, healthcare, education, and other essentials. A child support lawyer can also represent parents in disputes over the amount of support, ensure fair calculations based on income, and handle legal proceedings if one parent fails to meet their obligations.

Whether you're seeking to establish child support, modify an existing order, or enforce payments, a child support lawyer can help you navigate the legal system and protect your rights and the well-being of your child.

When Should I Hire a Child Support Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child support lawyer when you need assistance with any of the following child support matters:

  • Establishing child support: If you are going through a divorce or separation and need to establish a child support order, a lawyer can help ensure that the support amount is fair and accurately calculated.
  • Modifying child support orders: If there has been a significant change in circumstances, such as a job loss, income change, or a child's financial needs, a lawyer can help you request a modification to the existing child support order.
  • Enforcing child support payments: If the other parent has failed to make court-ordered child support payments, a lawyer can help enforce the order through legal means such as wage garnishment, property liens, or even legal action.
  • Disputing child support calculations: If you believe the child support amount has been incorrectly calculated based on your income or expenses, a lawyer can help you challenge the calculation and seek a fair adjustment.
  • Paternity disputes: If paternity needs to be established before child support can be ordered, a lawyer can assist with DNA testing and legal proceedings.
  • Interstate child support cases: If the parents live in different states, navigating child support laws can be complex. A lawyer can help ensure the proper jurisdiction is established and that child support is enforced across state lines.
  • Child support during custody disputes: If child custody and child support are being determined simultaneously, a lawyer can help ensure that both issues are resolved fairly and in the best interest of the child.

Hiring a lawyer early can help ensure that your child support case is handled effectively and that your child's financial needs are met.

What Does a Child Support Lawyer Do?

A child support lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents secure, modify, and enforce child support arrangements. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing for child support: A lawyer can help you initiate the legal process to obtain a child support order, ensuring that all necessary documentation is submitted and deadlines are met.
  • Calculating child support: A lawyer can help ensure that child support is calculated fairly based on both parents' incomes, the needs of the child, and other factors such as healthcare and education costs.
  • Negotiating child support agreements: If both parents are willing to negotiate, a lawyer can help facilitate an agreement on child support outside of court, which can then be approved by a judge.
  • Representing you in court: If negotiations fail or the other parent contests the child support amount, a lawyer will represent you in family court, presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Modifying support orders: A lawyer can help you file a request for modification if circumstances change, such as a loss of income or an increase in the child’s financial needs.
  • Enforcing child support: If the other parent is not making court-ordered payments, a lawyer can take legal steps to enforce the order through wage garnishment, property liens, or other measures.
  • Handling complex cases: In cases involving high incomes, self-employment, or complicated financial situations, a lawyer can help ensure that all relevant factors are considered in determining child support.

How Are Child Support Lawyers Paid?

Child support lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work required. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child support lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. The total cost will depend on how much time the lawyer spends on your case, including preparation, negotiations, and court appearances.
  • Flat fee: For more straightforward cases, such as uncontested child support agreements or basic modifications, some lawyers may offer a flat fee that covers all services related to the case.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount of the retainer depends on the expected complexity of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers offer sliding scale fees based on income or provide pro bono (free) services in cases where clients cannot afford to pay full legal fees, especially when children’s needs are at stake.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are covered.

How Much Does a Child Support Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child support lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, whether it's contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested child support cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and the lawyer’s fees.
  • Contested child support cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, especially if the case involves significant court time.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for child support cases, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases that involve complex financial issues.
  • Modification or enforcement: Fees for modifying or enforcing a child support order may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity and the need for court intervention.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Support Lawyer

Before hiring a child support lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child support cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s establishing, modifying, or enforcing child support orders.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees, or requires a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and any potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Child support cases can take time, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what factors may cause delays.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. What documents should I prepare?
Ask the lawyer what financial documents and other information you should bring to help them calculate child support and build your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Support Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child support lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and have successfully handled child support cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on child support matters.
  • Check for certifications: Some lawyers may have certifications in family law or membership in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), which can indicate their expertise in child support and family law issues.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a child support lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Income documents: Bring pay stubs, tax returns, W-2s, or any other documentation of your income and the other parent’s income, as this will be used to calculate child support.
  • Existing child support orders: If there are any existing child support or custody orders, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Child-related expenses: Provide documentation of your child’s medical bills, education expenses, daycare costs, and any other expenses that should be factored into the child support calculation.
  • Communication with the other parent: Bring any communication between you and the other parent regarding child support, whether through emails, text messages, or written agreements.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions about your case, the legal process, and the lawyer’s fees.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
