Our attorney, Elizabeth Smyers, and her assistant were horrible at communicating, demanding us to meet their deadlines while completely allowing the other party to not provide court required information that was needed. Shannon is handling my current divorce. Very patient and understanding, yet gives it to you straight and truthful. Very fair in regards to cost. Has charged 1/3 of my wife's attorney yet has filled me in more and made sure I understand what she is doing for me in trying to move forward. Has recommended actions to me that I have taken and some I have not, but understands why I decided not to without badgering me. I'm no easy client, and I have probably handcuffed her in defending me. But she consults me and gives it to me from both perspectives. I'm so glad I found her services and double glad she accepted me as a client. Her assistant Kaila is a saint as well. Thanks to both of them for helping me.

I hired Ms. Otto to assist me with my divorce in 2012. She was very easy to work with and did a great job in dealing with my ex husbands attorney. We were able to come to an amicable separation agreement in a very reasonable amount of time which was important to me so that things didn’t get dragged out. I also hired her and her partner Mr. Locke to assist me in another part of my divorce which had to do with my mothers will and again they were nothing but professional and swift in getting that situation wrapped up. I have referred quite a few folks to Ms. Otto including my daughter for a prenuptial agreement. If you’re looking for a great lawyer that will get things done in a timely fashion with your best interest at heart look no further.

I retained Ms. Shannon Otto and she helped me to file a couple of show cause motions for contempt of court, she also helped me to increase my visitation time, and to update our child support schedule. I am extremely impressed with Ms. Otto. She is very knowledgeable, professional and honest attorney. During the discovery phase she was very thorough and she made me work a lot to compile all the information that could serve as evidence. I really appreciate the way that she represented me in court, in front of the Judge, Ms. Otto was always very well prepared. She focused on the important issues, and she chose her battles wisely. At the end, I am very pleased with the outcome of my case. Her paralegal, Ms. Craig was very helpful, she always kept me informed on the development of my case and she always got back to me to answer my questions.
I really hope that I do not have to return to court, but if this happens, I will not hesitate to retain Ms. Otto to represent me again. Miss Shannon Otto is an outstanding family law attorney and I highly recommend her.

I never had to use a lawyer before this year. I am glad I chose Ben Rand for several reasons:
1- I did not understand the severarity of the case and the implications if would have on me in the long run
2-Ben made the legal process very easy to understand and put me at the ease the entire time
3.He checekd in regularly to make sure everything was on track and was available to me anytime of the day
4-His quality of service, responsiveness and integrity were beyond my expectations.

Ben is not just a lawyer, but he is a friend. He is very honest, even if it's not what you want to hear. He is respectful, and understands what's best for you, and your family. He is not one of those lawyers who will just take your money, and tell you anything. If it's a waste of time, and money he'll tell you. Mr. Rand has represented me several times, and I will be the first to say that He was worth every $$$$. It's hard to find good people now days. Clayton Worthington and his staff went well beyond what i expected from a family law practice. He was honest with me about expectations. He laid out options and was realistic about expectations for each path. He was respectful of my moral compass while clearly explaining the outcomes I could expect. Most importantly, he genuinely cared about the my mental health and the impact a divorce would have on my children. He made a difficult situation manageable. In the end, I truly feel like I got a fair shake from the legal system.
I can't recommend these guys enough. You need them if you're going through a divorce. It's worth every penney.

You truly get what you pay for, especially in legal representation. And if your kids mean enough to you you won't think twice about retaining Craig Sampson. A father in a custody battle in VA can be a bad position to be in and bring low expectations regarding the outcome. Craig is the best in the business hands down. Extremely well prepared and has a court presence second to none. He will shine for you if given the opportunity. His pre-trial performance stopped the opposition in their tracks so overwhelmingly, they withdrew the case prior to the actual trial. Where they were not prepared, he was and made that day the trial. The judge acknowledged every point and legal precedent he presented. I can't say enough to truly explain his skill sets and professionalism, but you can witness it yourself. Although this is business, I will be eternally grateful for what he did for me and my daughters ensuring we stayed as one, family.

Keep an eye on your documents with this firm. They will show you documents with acceptable numbers then after you electronically sign or approve, they will change the numbers on you. (AKA "Bait and switch") Their ability to math is bad. I am so angry and frustrated with this firm I'm having a hard time typing this as my hands are shaking.

Where to start. I had a very contested custody matter and sought out what I thought was the best firm in Richmond. After initially paying a ridiculous retainer fee, everything spiraled downward. Ms.Finley does not care about your case, and only cares about racking up as much “billable hours (more like minutes)” as she can. She doesn’t take into consideration any of your wants, and will push onto you what she wants. I’ve been through several custody matters, and even hired a new lawyer for the matter I originally hired Ms.Finley on and have received great results after moving on from Ms.Finley. Don’t be fooled by this firm, they will send you packing after they drained every penny they can get out of you.

I was a father who had originally agreed to share custody with my ex. The arrangement was in place, but I had not signed. My ex had moved, had the kids in new schools, but was making decisions that I believed were not in the kids' best interests. I had retained one attorney at the cost of several thousand dollars but was dissatisfied with the progress. I met with Mrs. VanZile, and within minutes she had an understanding of my situation and the type of person (my ex) I was dealing with. I always felt like I had someone fighting in my corner. At trial, she was able to expose my ex's motives and ultimately I was awarded a change of custody. My coworkers, who came to the hearing for support, witnessed Mrs. VanZile's performance and a couple have reached out to me in the years that followed for her name and contact info. I gladly share. My kids are young adults now, and the conflicts have long since settled. Your experience may vary, but as for me, I am grateful for the help I received.

I made the horrific mistake of hiring Chris as my lawyer in 2008. Chris appeared to be on my side and made me think that I had nothing to worry about when going to court versus my now x husband over custody of my then 2 1/2 year old. He wound up costing me close to $7k and the result of the preliminary hearing broke my heart by the judge awarding joint custody to my x. Chris acted like it didn't matter to him one way or the other if I lost or won when it came to the hearing. He allowed my x's attorney to walk all over him and eventually beat him in a case that was pretty cut and dry considering I had plenty of evidence against my x to prove that I was the primary parent even through our marriage. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. I had to hire another attorney to get me divorced because after thousands of dollars and not getting the results I wanted or hoped for, I was not about to waste anymore money or time on someone I did not trust. 9 years later, I am still fighting with my x and about to go back to court over custody again. Thanks for putting me into debt and ruing mine and my son's lives.
