When no other attorney believed me and I felt all hope was lost... I found Kevin! Not only did he 100% successfully defend the false allegations against me, he actually cares about you as a person. The courts respect him and his ability as a defense attorney speaks for itself. I highly recommend this law firm!

He took the case for my 14 year old son many years ago. Family court issue. Criminal and burglary charges. He proved my son was innocent of all charges. He provided a refund of monies he didn’t use. Which I found to be incredibly. I believe he is an honest and decent person to hire.

It was really a pleasure to deal with John. He is very responsive and provided regular updates to my speeding ticket. John was able to reduce the four points ticket to a parking ticket and was able to reduce the fine payable to a very minimal amount. I would highly recommend to use John in fighting traffic violation tickets. Overall a very positive experience.

I contacted Attorney John J. Lindsey on behalf of a relative who received a speeding ticket in Central New York in the fall of 2024. Attorney Lindsey responded to my email in a detailed and thorough manner. He explained his process, how the court handles such matters, possible outcomes, and his fee, which was quite reasonable. Attorney Lindsey kept us informed throughout the process, and the outcome was better than anticipated. I highly recommend Attorney John Lindsey.

I had a consultation with this attorney and then chose to retain her. She discussed all of the things she would do during the consultation and those things unfortunately never happened. I was transparent in the consultation that this was a complex custody case. When she entered an Order to Show Cause for my case, it was terrible. I have shown that to attorneys and all of them asked where the rest of it was and stated it wasn't entered properly either. This attorney was 40 minutes late to my hearing and unprepared. When the Judge asked her questions about my case, she looked at me and told me to answer the Judge. I could have done a better job representing myself. I do not recommend her for any custody cases. She sent me invoices where she double billed me for the same service on two different occasions amounting to approximately $1100. She sent me invoices with someone else's address on them. It took about a month for me to get refunded the rest of my retainer. Hiring her was a terrible experience and I am confused by the good reviews. When I retained another attorney to represent my case, he told me that people can pay for good reviews, and he has had cases against this attorney, and she was consistently late and unprepared. If you are looking for representation for a complex custody case, please find another attorney for you and your family. If you look at her account on Avvo, there are five star reviews being entered every two days. I was told that is a site you can pay for good reviews to be posted. I would pay attention to the lower rated comments and reviews for her on lawyers.com. They seem to describe her well. I wish I had seen those before I retained her. I am editing this so I can respond to JoAnn's response. I spoke in detail to her about my previous attorney in which JoAnn stated I needed to retain her to further eliminate more damage being done by my previous attorney. I did retain JoAnn and never thought I would have ended up in a more damaging position. There is nothing pending on the Court calendar for my case because the attorney I retained after her did their job, was prepared, and on time; the case has been resolved with my new attorney. JoAnn was also out of town excessively, took several weeks to file an Order to Show Cause which was created terribly, consistently missed phone calls from the opposing attorney, and rarely responded to me. I also don't recall her giving me any advice about my case once she was retained; she was only my attorney for one appearance when she was 40 minutes late, unprepared, and didn't know any details of my case. I wish she had responded to me as quickly as she did to my review when she was my attorney. I also wish she put that effort into my case when representing me like she did in her response to my review. I would highly recommend anyone want to retain this attorney for a complex custody case look elsewhere, and at the very least, complete several consultations with attorneys to make sure you find the correct fit for your family and your case.

I called Sarah Gold's law firm to ask about forming a LLC in New York. I did some research prior to my call but was confused as heck and was not confident in dealing with the state. Ms. Gold walked me through the process, answered my questions, and told me her fee. I thought the fee was competitive, keeping in mind it included state fees and public notice fees. We communicated online, she had to search to see if my LLC name was not prohibited or duplicative. I also asked for her to set up a DBA and she did that. It was so obvious that she new what she was doing, a true expert professional . She did all the filing, advertising and DBA in a day and I had what I legally needed hours later. she emailed me copies of the application filing, receipts and most important my official LLC. I would use Sarah Gold without any hesitation and I highly recommend you do too.

I needed help after my divorce with my ex wife constantly pulling me into Family Court for made up reasons. I made an apt with Michelle Haskin and after 15 minutes, I knew I needed her. Simply the best. Michelle’s accomplishments are too long to list. I didn’t even know there was a class of Super Lawyers. I wish I had her from the beginning of my divorce. Courteous, friendly, and over the top accolades. I needed someone who could defend me and keep my ex from her nonsense. I’m still dealing with it, but its gotten a lot better. Yes it’s very expensive but honestly, you get what you pay for. Also, hats off to Brian Palamar, and Deb & Val. If you need help this is the place to go. This practice has your back.

I have been a practicing attorney in the State of New York for over 42 years. During that time, I have had the privilege to know many great attorneys, as well as employ and train dozens of attorneys in various capacities. I have also needed, at times, to retain the services of attorneys for business or personal matters. During a very difficult time in my life, April Dalbec, Esq., served as my attorney. She provided extremely capable counsel. I witnessed, first hand, her ability to coordinate and work with other attorneys in complex matters. She provided excellent guidance in an emotionally-charged situation and she always listened to my concerns and was responsive. She was also readily available, including during evenings and weekends. April is blessed with a wonderful and responsive support staff. I would wholeheartedly endorse her for anyone experiencing a complex and difficult situation.

I retained the Kindlon Law Firm in the Autumn of 2011 to represent me in a serious criminal matter. I was extremely disappointed in their service! Their attorneys (Mr. T. Kindlon and Mr. Hammond) participated in a conference call with myself, and my brother (who is a CA labor law attorney). During this meeting, Mr. Kindlon and Mr. Hammond both AGREED to a very specific course of action that I had laid out for my defense. Unfortunately, after this agreement they made the conscious and deliberate decision to completely ignore my directive. The prosecutor was continually asking the Court for 90-day extensions. And the Kindlon Law Firm allowed the extensions repeatedly. The stress of these constant extensions, and a prolonged pre-trial release period, was taking a very serious toll on my health (both physical, and mental). Therefore, I made the decision to oppose any further extensions which the prosecutor requested. Mr. Kindlon & Mr. Hammond were fully aware of my health concerns and that I no longer was willing to give the govt unchallenged extensions. Nevertheless, these attorneys completely disregarded my (the client's) directive and allowed the govt yet another, unchallenged, 90-day extension... They did not even inform me of their egregious action. I was subsequently informed by a Texas attorney who I had also retained. After I was informed that Mr. T. Kindlon and Mr. Hammond had elected to completely disregard an agreed upon course of action/directive from the client, I immediately fired the Kindlon Law Firm and retained other representation. I would certainly not use this firm again.

For any criminal charges in capital region I would absolutely recommend this law office!

My experience with this attorney was exceptional! When my family faced the difficult decision of placing our beloved mother into long-term care, it was emotionally challenging and financially daunting. Needing help, I contacted numerous attorneys in the Capital District and they all referred me to the same lawyer: JulieAnne Calereso, Esq., an experienced attorney with a depth of knowledge in Crisis Medicaid Planning. From the very first consultation, she put me at ease and reassured me that I was not alone in this journey. She took the time to understand our family's unique situation and provided us with a clear roadmap of what needed to be done. Her expertise was evident as she guided me through the complex process of asset protection, eligibility requirements, and application procedures. She also helped me complete various legal documents and forms, ensuring their accuracy and timeliness. Throughout this stressful time, Julie was not only a legal advisor but also a supportive, understanding, and kind presence. She always took the time to listen to my concerns and patiently clarify complex issues, and was incredibly responsive by phone and email. Her expertise, communication, and genuine care surpassed all of our expectations. I highly recommend her services to anyone in need of legal advice.

I have worked with many attorneys and I wouldn't hire this guy to wash my car let alone represent my legal interests. When you ask a question he makes up an answer instead of telling you he needs to research it. He says "uh" every other word and clearly needs a few classes in English, as well as 3 more years in law school.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
