Ms. Ellise Washington is such a great attorney!! She listens attentively and respects your opinion. She does her research and fights for you, even when you feel defeated. She was able to push for a dismissal of my case in a rare occurrence. The case is Dismissed!

They cleared my case and was like a burden lifted off my shoulders.I would recommend this team to anyone who else has had a problem with any debt collection agency. Thanks again so much for everything. Will use this team again for any other issues that may come up in the future.

I got a letter in the mail from Watts & Herring, LLC thinking it was just someone wanting more money. I kept the letter because I was being sued by a debt collector, also I was going through one of these debt consolidation companies that was hurting more than helping. I called Watts & Herring talked to them about my problem. They told me what they would do for me and how much it would cost. I didn't do it right away, but I didn't have long to make a decision. I called them back everyone was very helpful walked me through everything. As of today that debt collector is no longer wanting money from me. Thanks to their hard work and time. If I have this problem again there is no doubt who I will be calling. Watts & Herring, LLC and the staff are wonderful and walks you through it all. Thank you so very much. Mrs. T. Williams

A debt buyer bought a debt, had it placed on my credit bureau files and tanked my score. I was skeptical after contacting several law firms who seemed to be in the debt collector business. I stumbled on Watts & Herring, took the chance to call them. Every step they told me they would do has been done, the case is resolved with prejudice, so it is over!!! Once this and a few other blemishes have been removed my credit profile will be restored to where it always was. Thanks Watts & Herring

As a fellow attorney, I recognize good legal work and good law office customer service. Attorney Rice has given my referrals excellent service. I've attended some of the hearings and note that attorney Rice recieves great respect from court personell. He is thourough with his preparation and discusses the case consistently with the client. Attorney Rice also helps the client with other issues following concluding issues with the court - which he is not required to do. He is approachable and is very good at making the client understand the possible outcomes and how to prepare. I am very pleased in how he reprrsents my referred clients.

Rip Andrews is an outstanding individual, and extraordinary attorney, who possesses what can best be described as a "tenacity for justice". Extremely talented and intelligent, Rip Andrews has genuine integrity, compassion, and patience that I have found to be unparalleled in the legal world. He combines his tremendous skill-set with the ability to truly connect with a client on a personal level. Taking on our extremely difficult, lengthy, and complicated wrongful death case, Rip successfully navigated countless setbacks and unexpected turns, demanding and ensuring that justice was served. Without question, our case would have not reached a positive conclusion without Rip's amazing performance. Rip Andrews is a true family man, a wonderful person, and operates on a remarkable level to which all attorneys should aspire.

Rip Andrews is a young brilliant attorney. He took my case and breathed life into it. He connected with the jurors with his opening statement and never lost them. He was respectful to the other side but never failed to fight for me when required. He took input from me and incorporated it into the arguments when necessary using his own words. He maintains composure and is level headed. If you have a legitament case, I highly recommend Rip. He can make the difference you need. He will make old school lawyers look like buffoons. At least he did in my case.

Mr. Andrews is a very professional and thorough. He was upfront with me regarding the difficulties of my case, and advised as to my options. Throughout the preparations/information gathering he was genuinely interested in what I had to report, and advised the best course of action based upon the facts I presented and those that were uncovered during research. I was impressed by his composure in the court room and through jury selection. In the end, the case was won. Mr. Andrews assisted me in getting a desirable outcome, as well as finding closure for a very difficult time.

This man an Cal Whaley have a jaw dropping talent to defend their clients on top of being the most honest and respectable attorneys I have ever met. After speaking to many attorneys in town, it was difficult to find someone trustworthy, respectable, and talented. I still laughing out loud when I think about how silly these men were able to make two very corrupt prosecutors look. I was personally involved in a car accident a few years back. I was taken to the hospital and treated for a neck injury that resulted in surgery. The accident report showed the other individual was at fault. But as I learn quickly dealing with the insurance companies was almost impossible. A friend recommended that I should go see Greg Zarzaur. Greg set down with me many times as we reviewed my case. Of course there was no question after meeting him that he was the right attorney . I could tell that he cared deeply and understood my situation. The case is over today and the insurance company settled with me for around $120,000. I am sure that without Greg I would never have received any substantial amount of money. It's not really even the money. As of today I have gone through two surgeries but with that said I do feel like the insurance company's were held liable. Would I recommend Greg to a friend, ..........I'd put them in my car and drive them to his office.

I've had the opportunity to work with Phil Piggott on several different matters for my company over the last several years and I recommend him without reservation. Phil is professional but extremely personable, knowledgeable, resourceful, and thorough. Phil is a lawyer that will put in the hard work to handle your case, with your best interest at heart, and you will enjoy working with him. He is willing to go beyond the courtroom, out in the field (however unpleasant that may be!) to investigate and prepare all aspects of the case. I am also a lawyer, and work with many other lawyers daily. Phil is a skilled lawyer you can trust and communicate with easily -- and he replies to calls/emails promptly!

Any consideration toward litigation is a serious matter. For me, it was deeply personal too. I remember relating the circumstances to Ms. Trueblood & feeling emotionally wrecked. She agreed to take my case and I left. I didn't hear anything for awhile, so I called. I asked Ms. Trueblood if she needed anything, how things were progressing, etc. and Ms. Trueblood's response was, "Go to work. We will handle this." Those words were confidence boosting and reassuring. So I did...go to work, that is. Next thing I know, there is a settlement offer and Ms. Trueblood and Mr. Henry Brewster are wrapping things up for me. They protected me when I felt I was losing everything I worked for. I remember being told by the company I was in litigation with telling me that they had the best attorney in the state, and I would regret this fight through every generation of family I had. Well, they didn't have Ms. Temple Trueblood. We WON!! I cannot express how grateful I am to Ms. Trueblood and her team. She's a Rockstar! Professional, courteous, & smart beyond words.

I cannot express enough gratitude for Attorneys Ashley Peinhardt and Leon Ashford for their exceptional legal services. Recently, they represented my family in a medical malpractice lawsuit, and thanks to their expertise and dedication, we won the case! From our very first meeting, Ashley and Leon demonstrated a deep understanding of medical law and were incredibly compassionate about our situation. They took the time to listen to our concerns, explained the entire legal process clearly, and kept us informed every step of the way. Their attention to detail and thorough preparation made us feel confident in their abilities. During the trial, Ashley and Leon's professionalism and poise were evident as they presented our case compellingly. They skillfully navigated complex medical issues, and their ability to communicate effectively with the jury played a significant role in our victory. It was clear that they had built a strong case rooted in extensive research and expert testimonies. Not only did Ashley and Leon achieve a favorable outcome for our family, but they also provided us with much-needed support during a challenging time. Their empathy and dedication went beyond just winning the case—they genuinely cared about our well-being and the impact of the situation on our lives. I highly recommend Attorneys Ashley Peinhardt and Leon Ashford to anyone seeking legal representation, especially in medical malpractice cases. Their commitment to their clients and their expertise in the field are truly remarkable. Thank you, Ashley, Leon and team for fighting for us and delivering justice!

Keith and Diane worked so hard for my husband when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident personal injury case which turned into a wrongful death before it was over. They are the nicest people. Always able to reach and they kept us informed. When my husband just needed to talk, Keith was always so kind and willing to listen. Fought and won, for me and my daughters, for my husband a very hard uphill battle. He is very knowledgeable! Goes without saying. It speaks for itself. So kind and caring, especially in what has been the saddest times of our lives. I would give 10 stars if I could. He’s not just an attorney he really wants the best for you completely. Highly recommend Keith Belt of Belt, Bruner and Barnett Personal Injury Attorneys. Thank you so much, Angie Munroe

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
