On August 27th at 2:00 PM EST, I called your office seeking legal advice and assistance. Unfortunately, I encountered an individual who displayed an unprofessional and discourteous attitude. When I initially explained my situation, she abruptly informed me that your office does not handle such matters and hung up without allowing me to ask any further questions. I called back to inquire about the specific cases your office does handle, as I believe my civil rights have been violated. However, before I could fully articulate my question, she interrupted, stating, "I said we don’t handle this, and I said have a great day," and then hung up on me once again. Frustrated by this lack of assistance, I called a third time to request to speak with a supervisor. On two separate occasions, she answered the phone only to immediately hang up. When she finally responded, she simply said, "Please stop calling." I would like to bring this matter to the attention of her supervisor, as this behavior reflects a lack of customer service skills and professionalism. It is disheartening to encounter such a response, especially when reaching out for help in a difficult situation. Individuals who prioritize dismissing potential clients over offering assistance should not be in positions where they interact with the public. As a college student in need of legal help, I expected better treatment. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and that appropriate steps are taken to ensure others do not experience the same level of disregard.

I am very impressed with Mr. Slepian's work ethic. I consulted him with a question about possible actions to take, and he took the time to thoroughly understand the background of my immigration process. He was the first lawyer to do this, and as a non-native speaker, I really appreciated that he spoke slowly and clearly. He also didn’t try to push his services on me. Instead, he made me feel very relieved. If I ever need an immigration lawyer, he will be my first choice.

From start to finish the process was amazing and easy to navigate. My consultation was well worth the money and as I continued down my legal path, speaking with Rick Brister and his team, things were made clear, clean-cut, and most of all, stress free. I highly recommend working with this firm if you are pulled into any legal matters, they will give you REAL legal advice and assistance without trying to run up a crazy bill! Give them a call today!

Tully and Rickney PLLC were great to work with from the start! I worked with Nicholas Marricco from the Manhattan dept and Sivan Zak from White Plains dept both were on top of our case and were with my family step by step throughout the educational rights process. Even the secretary Abby always able to communicate and easy to get ahold of for any questions that we had. If your looking for lawyers to stand up for your children's rights these two are your go to!

Mike did a amazing job handling my case back in 2011 . I was looking at 18 years . Due to Mike reviewing my case and the details that were left out by prosecuter and the information that was brought before the judge, and my outstanding community backround and services that I have been involved in and the fact that I was a dad of 4 kids and the bread winner in the house.. Mike worked with with the judge, the procecuter and I to get a better "DEAL". Mike is a excellent attorney with working with families needs and acceptions and paints a very good picture of peoples backrounds and there potential in society's every day functions and will fight for you and not lay down like other lawyers...thank you again MIKE.

Fifteen years ago I need a work visa for a job offer in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Under the most difficult challenges Michael and his then-partner Jim Eiss made it possible for my family and I to live and work in the United States. They were able to obtain permanent residency status for myself and my family, and for that I will always be extremely grateful. My children have done well in school as a benefit and fruit of our family's labor. In fact, my older son has completed 2 years of University for a legal studies degree, and then he wants to go on to law school. May God bless Jim Eiss and Michael Berger, and long live America.

Mazzu Law was the first firm that took me seriously. Listend to my story. Worked diligently, kept me informed, and got a settlement for me. If I ever have to go through this again. I would come back to this firm first. Treated me with kindness, respect, and honesty. Gave me options and never felt like I was lost. I was informed all the way through and was carefully explained all the steps we took together. It is a very professional and they prove productive services. Of your looking for a great firm look no further. This is one of the greats.

I was in a car accident and decided to seek help from William Mattar Law Offices because I always saw their commercials as a kid and I remembered the jingle, but my experience was extremely disappointing. They claimed they reached out to me multiple times through phone and email, but I never received a single message or call. It felt like they used this excuse to avoid taking my case instead of being honest about it. If they didn’t want to handle my case, they should’ve just told me to my face. I sent letters, called repeatedly, and tried to follow up, but they kept pretending they would call me back—yet no one ever did. Ultimately, I had to handle my dispute on my own. Ironically, I ended up settling for much more money than I believe they could have ever achieved. It’s clear they only want big cases and don’t take smaller cases seriously. On top of that, their staff was rude and unprofessional. The lawyer’s representative I spoke to often had an attitude and never made me feel valued or respected. The only positive thing about my experience was when I first went into the office—they made me feel welcome initially, but everything went downhill after that. If you’re dealing with a case, I’d recommend fighting on your own or going to a firm like The Barnes Firm, where they might treat you with the respect and seriousness you deserve. William Mattar’s office did not live up to their reputation, and I won’t be going back.

My initial experience with the firm was great! They made me feel heard and taken care of. After a while I heard less and less until I started to reach out to them. It took several attempts to get someone to return my call only to be given an incorrect update on my case. Several times over the last year I have been given the update of “just waiting on a call back from the adjuster” In the beginning I was promised constant updates throughout my case, now I’m told that if there is no new news don’t expect a call.

I have been with Sawer & Sackel for 3 separate workers comp claims and have been very unsatisfied until recently. Up until Holly took ownership in my cases I was left wondering what was going on. I was the one that had to initiate any and all inquiries into correspondences from the insurance carrier. And I rarely spoke with a lawyer and it was Never the same individual. Since working with Holly things have change my thinking entirely. She has taken ownership in my case and has gone above and beyond my expectations (or at least what my expectations of a law firm should be) and have reaffirmed my choice in a workers compensation law firm. Holly will initiate and follow up on all inquiries and respond in a timely manner. I have enjoyed working with her and look forward to a positive outcome in my pending cases.

I’ve been with Sawers & Sackel for a few months. From day one, they have been professional and answered all of my questions. Going through this process has been difficult. During a phone call, Holly was so supportive. A few days later, I received a letter from Holly, with handwritten encouragement from her! It brought me to tears. I’ve never heard of a law firm that cares this much, to not only work diligently on my behalf but to take an interest in me personally. Bill and Julie have also been so supportive to me I would recommend Sawers & Sackel to anyone!!

This is a great law office. Every staff member that I worked with was professional, courteous and extremely helpful. Mr. Ranzenhofer was especially soft-spoken and kind but yet fierce in getting my issue resolved. They left no stone unturned in getting a positive conclusion for me. I was so pleased with the results and would use this Law Firm for any issue I would have in the future.

My father badly needs help and because I asked too many questions during the intro talk (I guess that's why? Fridman interrupted me mid sentence to say he was declining) then declined the case and coldly, cruelly, dismissively told me to look elsewhere. I guess use this law firm if you want someone who treats you like that.

Sought Bruce's office seeking a PAID HOURLY attorney to assist with a educational disabilities consultation. Never returned call when secretary told me attorney was available at his desk. Called again next day was told I was being transferred to a lawyer, when I connected with the woman she told me she wasn't a lawyer but another administrator.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
