I wrote to Lorna at the end of my 2.5-year custody battle - "Words are inadequate to express my gratefulness", and it's true. Lorna has been on my side for that long, not only as my counsel, but to me, also a friend, and a mentor. I remember talking to a dozen attorneys who all turned down my case because of its complexity - a divorce that invovled domestic violence, dependency, immigration, and relocation - yet Lorna was the only attorney that took genuine interest in my case, and she did not even charge me for our first 2-hour consultation. She actually read through over 3000 pages of my dependency case. She always responds promptly, sometimes even after office hours, she is thorough and detailed, insightful and empathic. She remained a delightful spirit despite my ex's constant threats, harassment, and accusation directed at her. Even though I could not continue to afford her representation toward the end of my case, and chose to represent myself in a 3-day trial, she guided me through every step to make sure I was prepared and capable. And I won, even with some extra icing on the cake I did not expect. The judge said he has not seen anyone go pro-se without an attorney and could carry out the whole trial like I did in his 14 years of experience, but I credited Lorna for her guidance. I couldn't have done it without her. She encouraged me and believed in me even when I doubted myself - unlike those lawyers on Avvo who always tell you that you are screwed if you're going to trial alone. Talking to her always made me feel better. She went above and beyond for me from beginning to end like no others, and for that I'm forever grateful for everything she has done for me. Thank you Lorna <3.

I hired Mr Weinzierl for help with long term payment issues and child support for my son about to go to college. I am nearly 10 years post divorce with an abuser who will not stop for nothing. Rob is really calming when the ex triggers the PTSD. He knows things are upsetting but he guides with what feels like a bit of love and logic. If you have ever dealt with a truly pathological person you know how crazy they can make a legal case. There is almost nobody who understands the abuse dynamics in family law. I am proclaiming this loudly- Rob Gets It!! My case isn’t done yet but I am so happy Rob has not given up fighting for what’s right. I can’t recommend him highly enough!!

Lawyers tend to get a bad wrap yes even defense attorneys. Braden represented me on two overlapping cases and never made me feel any kind of way. He probably could tell from my face that i already felt the full embarrassing weight of having to come to him with the added burden of another case whilst litigating the first....despite us not seeing eye to eye politically he still defended my second amendment rights and even got my firearm returned to me. Which i thought would never happen and was very satisfying to go down to city hall and receive my gun back. Even though the crooked Marysville cops still have my magazine and holster for some very strange reason I'm proud to say my firearm remains in my possession. Braden, throughout the two years he represented me always made sure i was on time and informed about what time and where I needed to be and despite not having seen an end to my Marysville drama still give Mr. Pence a 5 star review. He's a great guy and so extremely well respected in the community that if you pick him for some reason get priority treatment from even the worst judges/prosecutors and never have to worry about sitting and waiting for your name to get called in alphabetical order. i'm sure many lawyers are granted that respect its just a really cool feeling to know that you are being represented by a winner like Braden one of the best. Also just so its known just because I couldn't jump through the ridiculous b/s that the Marysville court requires of a person that is gainfully employed and living an otherwise productive tax paying lifestyle doesn't take away from the great job he will do for anyone he represents. Pick Braden and you wont regret it I never have.

I was very fortunate to have Braden represent me in my DUI case in Snohomish County. Thanks to his hard work and knowledge, the result was a full dismissal. He kept me updated on the status of my case, was clear on the potential benefits and consequences of all my legal courses of action and ultimately helped me get all charges dropped. Throughout the entire proceeding, I felt confident in his ability and advice. Braden's an excellent lawyer and I highly recommend him.

Braden Pence successfully represented me on a charge by the Seattle Police Department of "Excessive Use of Horn". The charge was related to my honking my car's horn in a display of approval of the Occupy Seattle encampment as I drove by it. Braden was able to convince the prosecutor to drop the charge, prior to trial, on the basis that my 1st Amendment free speech rights had been violated by the SPD.

I come from a family of attorneys, grandfather, father, brother, daughter and daughter-in-law so I've been around the profession my whole life. I can tell you that Michael is really "on his game" and he is what's really important in an attorney, knowledgable. But what makes working with Mike so great is his demeanor. Friendly, he listens, he asks really great questions and makes the whole experience easy. I can only highly recommend. If you're looking for a great family law attorney look no further.

Mike was very kind and understanding of my situation. He asked all the right questions but also provided much needed guidance to try to help me resolve my issue. He made sure I had all the correct paperwork and knew the applicable laws and rules that applied to me. But more importantly, he reached out to me to check in even after everything was done to make sure that I was doing okay. His effort and genuine concern really made all the difference in the world, while I was dealing with one of the most stressful situations I have ever been in. I would recommend him to anyone that is looking for a sincere, thoughtful and knowledgeable attorney.

Josh is a very professional yet personal attorney. He cares enough to look over the whole case, to find and act on the inconsistencies in the discovery. He listened and supported my defense without making me feel uncomfortable in any way. He even went out of his way to help my witnesses feel comfortable about a rather embarrassing element that was part of the trial. i have never felt so comfortable and been so happy with any legal professional. All that and positive results, you cant beat Josh Field "Superstar"

Josh was very efficient with getting my case handled in a timely matter. He always returned my phone calls and always had an answer for me. He's very kind and works hard to be the best lawyer he can be. I was very confident the whole time my case was going on. I would definitely go to him again if need be, but I definitely don't plan on getting in trouble again! I'm very thankful to of had him on my side.

I would recommend Jaclyn Bray of Lauber Law Group to anyone going through the divorce process or wanting to improve their estate planning. Jaclyn represented me in a complicated divorce. She was very communicative, responsive, respectful, and fair through the whole process. She provided sound advice and helped me stay grounded as we worked through my case. She is now helping me with estate planning and has been fantastic on this front as well. She is top notch and would benefit anyone by representing them.

I cannot thank Snohomish County Legal Services enough for the peace of mind they have restored to me. They were quick, kind, professional, and effective. Kelsey, and everyone at SCLS, provide an invaluable service to our community. It’s businesses and people like SCLS that strive to keep our community safe and give a voice to those who otherwise would be silenced. We are extremely grateful to have been represented by Kelsey and Snohomish County Legal Services.

People, Remember that this is a free service. The handfull of hard working humans here aren't overpaid, cutthroat, ambulance chasers. FIRST- Get your ducks in a row & get your issue narrowed down to Problem, Dates, times, ppl you've spoje to. Then 2nd-Call the number given you and leave your info. 3rd- If your issue is really big and has time restraints, perhaps you should look into someplace where you pay on a sliding income scale. The employee that answers the VOICE MSGS is Friendly, kind, empathetic and reap ppl (But not an attorney nor able to give legal advice.) They also see ppl at the Snohomish County Courthouse in Everett on Tues-Thurs between the hours of 9am-2pm(?) It's on their OGMsg. NO APPTS ITS ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS. Be prepared to be searched by security upon entering into the area you'll be going to, too. Pay a couple dollars to park in their underground parking. The state should really help them out by perhaps getting them some more employees. It's like they never heard of the Pandemic! OK. STAY OUTTA TROUBLE, DON'T BREAK THE LAW and you won't need to deal with it 😁

I hear a lot of bad experiences with lawyers here but I recommend anyone who has been through subpar representation here to do your research on Jane Pak. She is a FANTASTIC CEO, and she took the time to have a thorough and excellent conversation with me about some concerns I had about two of her lawyers. She protected her employees and really highlighted how awesome it is that they do this without the pay they deserve in a way that helped me see the situation clearly and that it was similar to my own as another CEO of a nonprofit. She really highlighted star work from Adam and was an awesome advocate for her lawyer that represented me who clearly needed a lot training on some of the niche issues of my case. Though I don't think my representation deserved her generosity and it could jeopardize the safety of vulnerable people to continue to be generous with a lawyer you have to fight to defend you properly, and she has had that made excessively clear to her by myself through facts and evidence regarding this lawyer, I think it's awesome that she's willing to learn and train them in good faith and hope they can change. She ran the meeting with the utmost clarity, excellence and competence. She listened with utmost respect and treated me with the utmost respect in a way that made me feel safe speaking about a very distressing situation of revictimization by the system. I am rating this organization five stars solely for Jane Pak because she is a truly excellent CEO and she deserves to be running a five star company if she were respected duly. I hope that happens more and more for her.

Although Nathan got me the initial paperwork the amount of money spent was not worth it. He failed to update the judge as required. Failed to submit paperwork I requested him too. Failed to explain billing. Failed to follow the judges order. Always wanted more and more money and accomplished nothing. Then when he wanted an additional 5 to ten thousand dollars and I just paid my rearage and refurbished my escrow he dumped me claiming it was not paid in time. Not true the payment through MI billing recieved the payment the morning of the 30th. Unless you have a fat wallet and can dump tens of thousands on these guys do not use them they are all about money with no results. 20,000 dollars later I get my butt chewed by the judge because Nathan did not do his job then dumped me with nothing to show but a twenty thousand dollar debt. Now I have to redo all of the paperwork myself thanks for nothing Nathan. Over billed with no results.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
