Kirk was an extremely great attorney.Kirk won the case for me.I could not have had any better representation in my case. The only problem was the jury selection was not good, the jury didn't understand the clear directions they received from the Judge. I believe that false accusations of racism swayed the jury against awarding damages due to me.The City of KCMO which were the defendants have never addressed the acts of retaliation against me and continue to look away from any of their problems in Management.

Kirk made a bad experience a lot easier. He demonstrated an immense knowledge of law and proved to be 100% capable! His presence in a court room demands respect, you want him on your side! He's personable, honest, and very respctful. He dont miss a beat and is always on his toes! He has a way of foreseeing things, I never would imagined! I am pleased with Mr. Holman and his staff!

Presley and Presley helped me through my insurance claim. I would’ve walked away with nothing and no car if it wasn’t for Matt! They are very professional and very compassionate when it comes to your case! They kept me and my mom informed every step of the way as to what to expect and what was happening. They never let up on the insurance company! I would recommend this firm to anyone looking for great attorneys. I was so impressed and very pleased with the outcome. I appreciate them!!!

This place is scandalous. I called to merely get information. I was transferred to a female lawyer who told me to tell her about my case. She didn’t even let me finish before she cut me off to say they won’t take the case. She also confirmed they handle little to no malpractice cases so I asked why they appear at the top when searching malpractice lawyers. I told her, if you don’t handle malpractice then that is misrepresentation of services. She really got upset and hung up on me for merely making a comment. She also confirmed they only take cases where they KNOW a settlement is coming. I’m more concerned with the level of disrespect from this office. Even their receptionist was ignorant. What kind of law office is rude to people? Lawyers are NOT allowed to misrepresent their services or mislead people in any way. Those google results are more than misleading, it says ‘we handle these type of cases’ when I’m reality they do not. As a software developer myself I know this was done on purpose. I know exactly what is needed to appear in google search results. They would not appear in malpractice results if they did not put it in their title or headers on their pages. They clearly have malpractice somewhere with in their website either in a title element or headers. Google literally scrapes the pages for such data lol.

I was recommended to Kristen Jacobs Alexander for my divorce. Her communication and punctuality is incredible. She fought hard the entire duration of a lengthy divorce that felt more like a nightmare. She is incredibly smart and I'm so thankful to her and her team (Amber is her secretary and made me laugh when I thought I was going to die!). My ex was humiliating me and Kristen handled me with compassion while maintaining her assertive professionalism. Words cannot express how grateful I am for her representation! I have contacted numerous law firms, and unfortunately, this particular firm does not handle cases like mine. However, I must express my gratitude for the exceptional kindness and assistance provided by the lady who answered my call. Her demeanor stood out in stark contrast to the previous thirty calls I had made. I even spoke with a prominent firm that does handle my type of case, but I would not recommend them under any circumstances. Although I am uncertain about the types of cases they specialize in, I can confidently say that if their other staff members are as helpful as the lady I spoke with, then anyone seeking legal assistance would be in capable hands. Once again, I extend my sincere appreciation.

I had the honor of working with Greg, a personal injury attorney, during a recent case I had. By definition , injuries include every variety of injury to a person's body, emotions, or reputation, as contradistinguished from injury to property. Greg works with all kinds of clients, but what was most definitely the most comforting to me was his care for me as a person. My case took about 1 year after filing, Greg often just checked in with me to see how I was doing. I am so grateful for him on so many levels. Greg is an outstanding human on top of his knowledge for the law and my rights. I hands down recommend him if you would ever need someone to represent you. I was told several times by other attorneys whom I reached out to, that my case wasn’t big enough for their time and effort. At no point during our time together did he make me feel this way. Thank you Greg for your professionalism, knowledge, experience and for simply being a good human. I would call him a friend! 10 out of 10 I would recommend Greg!

Another attorney referred me to Greg. I sent an inquiry request and instead of Greg ignoring, being dismissive or condescending as I've experienced with many people in this profession, he listened and communicated with detail as to make me feel as if I was his only client (not the case). He wasn't able to take on my case but he definitely provided insight and resources amidst his calendar being totally booked. He did not have to do that. With this kind of experience, I will be referring him to friends and reach back out to him in the future if needed. 5 stars

Wish to highly recommend Nicholas Ruble and Megan Stumph-Turner for their excellent work during my recent contract lawsuit and employment mediation. Through a year of fact-finding, conflict negotiation, and client representation, they managed several particularly challenging issues with an impressive measure of professionalism and effectiveness. Their legal skill was equally matched by a unique blend of encouragement, good humor, and personal support. This combination of technical skill and individual attention allowed me to focus on getting my life back in order - while they managed the intricacies of my case. I was incredibly fortunate to have chosen this law firm to handle my employment-related case, with Megan R. Stumph-Turner and Nicholas S. Ruble representing me. Their profound impact has positively transformed my life. From our initial conversation, their support and understanding were exceptional, significantly easing my burdens. They skillfully managed every detail of my case, providing a reassuring sense of security throughout. Megan and Nick bring a rare blend of diligence, intelligence, and tenacity to their work—qualities you might expect from characters in a movie. What stood out the most was their absolute integrity. They were fully transparent, regularly updating me on both the progress of my case and the financial aspects involved. Their communication was flawless, ensuring I felt safe and at peace from the start, without the need for constant check-ins. Their representation felt serendipitous, swiftly resolving a longstanding issue within months. My only regret is not hiring them sooner. My confidence in this law firm is unshakeable for any future legal needs, and I eagerly await the chance to collaborate with Megan and Nick again should the occasion arise. They served as true guardian angels during a pivotal moment in my life, effecting a deep and meaningful transformation. Their unparalleled professionalism and sincere compassion have completely reshaped my expectations of legal services, establishing an exceptionally high standard. Without a doubt, they are the best in the field. I am forever grateful for their unparalleled support, dedication, and defense.

I contacted Bell Law Firm after I was referred to them, concerning a landlord tenant situation pertaining to mold mycotoxin toxicity. I was treated extremely horrible from the landlord. I lived in a water damage toxic mold apartment for 2 and 1/2 years. The landlord did absolutely nothing to help me and rectify the situation. I was so impressed with everyone at Bell Law firm! I cannot say enough about everyone that I spoke to or met with. I was referred to another attorney because of the issues with my health. The law firm felt that it was more important to address that part of my situation. I would have loved to have worked with them. I would recommend them 100%! Bell law firm listened, they were very quick responding, they were honest, they did not take my case lightly, they did their homework and researched my situation. I respect Bell Law firm for everything, even taking the time to research my case and direct me in the area they felt was best for me. Do not hesitate to hire them! I believe with out a shadow of a doubt they had my best interest at heart and I truly felt that they cared about me 100%! I definitely wish that I was able to work with them but I also respect their advice and what they felt was best for me. I definitely felt like I was the only person they were talking to at time! That's how incredible they treated me. Thank you Bell Law firm and I wish we could have worked together! Thank you for everything! Carey Sommers

My experience with them: they price gouge, wouldn't listen to input on parenting plan, poor communication, disorganized- all the things I dealt with Joshua Aguilar. They say that they specialize in military law and that is not the case.

Carl Mueller was excellent. He stood up to the work comp insurance and got both surgeries I needed. I was always able to contact him with questions or problems that had arisen any time during the 2 years. He fought and and I received the monetary damages I deserved. I would recommend Edelman & Thompson to anyone.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
