We contacted Matthew about an incident with one of our children. Matthew was clear, concise and very empathetic with my child’s concerns and issues. In fact, he was great in making our family feel better and helped us understand different action plan scenarios. I feel he is very trustable and also trustworthy. Thank you!

After determining that the only viable option for us in a dispute with our neighbor, was hiring an attorney, we found Mr. Hammond thru search engines and reviews. Our choice to go with Mr. Hammond fit our situation well. Mr. Hammond had a very calming and reassuring presence, that helped greatly with navigating us through this process. He was honest with what to expect and came up with some very creative and resourceful options for us to consider. His knowledge and understanding was greatly appreciated. We would have him represent us again, if needed. S. Schroeder, Oregon

Kollie Law is exceedingly helpful. Shawn stepped in on my behalf without delay. He share with me exactly what to expect and in turn, I had no need to pressure him on any aspect of my case. As he warned me, the wheel of the law turn very slowly as the law in not a respecter of persons. When I got impatient, I reminded myself that Shawn had it covered. My case is now resolved and I can give Kollie Law a five star review without reservation.

Mr. Watkins was an AMAZING attorney, and went the extra mile for me when he easily could have chosen not to. He was willing to add a lot of work to his load in order to help me out, when he would be making the same amount either way. Very thorough and professional, I would HIGHLY recommend him for anyone.

Caitlin Mitchell and her team did a phenomenal job handling my case, and I couldn't be more impressed with her professionalism and expertise. Caitlin always took the time to listen to my concerns and explain the process, keeping me informed at every stage. Her attention to detail and her dedication made all the difference. When I needed a voice, she provided it. The outcome exceeded my expectations, especially considering how challenging and complex the case was to navigate. Caitlin is compassionate, knowledgeable, and fully committed to her clients. She transformed an intimidating process into one where I felt valued and supported, protecting my rights every step of the way. I highly recommend Caitlin Mitchell and her team.

We had a very bad experience with Mr. Hwang. This was the only appointment we had with him. I think he is impersonal, angry, self absorbed and not patient. What do people need when they are going through the worst of their lives? -Patience, kindness and awareness of other people’s feelings, as death can be devastating for the family and friends. Knowledge without these traits is like getting a big enciclopedia. Please read all the reviews that have been written about him. I did not before setting an appointment, and regretted it.

Mr. Stern was extremely professional and thorough throughout the entire process of my case. His experience and knowledge proved to be well worth the seemingly high price. I'm glad to have spent the money to have such a vital role, in my life changing event, filled by Mr. Stern and his team. Mr. Stern not only did his job talking with the DA and professionals in and out of court, but also, made sure to check in with me that I was doing well and reassuring me during various difficult and frustrating stages of the process. If you are facing a rough road ahead of you, like I did, with criminal matters... do yourself a favor and contact Mr. Stern. Remember the high price comes with many years of experience, skill, and knowledge you're going to need for the BEST possible outcome in your case.

My life crumbled and fell apart at 22 when I was charged with strict liability statutory rape charges, for conduct that lacked any criminal intent. Desperate and hopeless, I was looking at decades in prison when I first met Zach, but he immediately assuaged much of my worries through his sharp analysis and strategizing in just the first consultation. My case was fairly complex, involving social media and communication logs, but Zach wasn't afraid of combing through it all to find any and all avenues of attack. Zach also went above and beyond in easing and dealing with my emotional turmoil, while never failing to be professional and honest with me about the potential outcomes of my case. And despite being charged in one of the worst counties to be prosecuted for a sex crime, Zach fought hard and was able to secure an outcome with only probation, allowing me the chance to plan my future and rebuild my life. Zach is unquestionably one of the best lawyers around, and he is truly dedicated to helping people navigate and fight against a system that at times can feel labyrinthine, overwhelming, and unjust. He understands the financial, mental, and societal toll that criminal charges and convictions can bring, and he never fails in treating his clients with the utmost compassion and respect. His pricing was fair, and his services, expertise, and connections are *well* worth it. Due to financial difficulties, he even worked with me to organize a generous payment plan. If you are ever facing serious charges and need a pitbull to fight for your rights and freedom, it would be a mistake not to call Zachary Stern.

An incredible criminal defense attorney with everything you could ask for in one - honest, intelligent, hard-working, charismatic, and compassionate. I was in a hopeless and extremely difficult situation facing decades in prison on charges as worse as they get, and after consulting several other lawyers, I only grew more hopeless. In the first consultation, Zach immediately stood out like a beacon of light among the rest, strategizing and coming up with concrete plans of attack to beat my case. In the end, he was able to get me an amazing outcome without any prison. Zach knows his craft, and he will fight tooth and nail for your rights and your freedom, even in the most severe and complex of cases.

I was referred to Clay through a business associate and friend who has very high standards for professional services. I was not disappointed! Clay was thorough in talking me through the process, his prices were fair, and his communication was excellent. He did an excellent job of dealing with an insurance company that was not only looking out for its own best interest, but was also very negligent in responding to us in a timely manner. I had been been in car accident where the driver was under insured and I had to make claim against my uninsured motorist coverage. My insurance company started jerking me around with unnecessary treatments and less than recommended treatments that were not helping me until my pip coverage ran out then tried to deny my claim all together. That is when I obtained the services of Mr. Clay MacCaslin. He took over and helped me navigate my way through doctors appointments, depositions and taking my insurance company to court. I could not of asked for a better outcome and got my maximum amount I was entitled to for my coverage and now I can get my medical bills paid with a little in my pocket. it has been a long hard road and I am very happy with the results and I would recommend to anyone the services of Clay MacCaslin. I tried to talk to Nik a few times about a legal issue I've been going through with my employer. On top of this, I was wanting to discuss just my rights in general as an employee and other things. I had emailed Nik a couple times and he didn't respond but I was determined to have ONE lawyer in Portland talk to me as a trans person. I paid Nik $100 ahead of time and wrote up the intake form with info all about what I was dealing with and other issues I was seeing in the trans community. I wanted help and to get what info I could out of a one hour session to help as many people as I could. Nik refused to help because I hadn't met a criteria but he also didn't read or acknowledge any of the details or questions I added to the intake form. He just offered to refund me and did. I just wanted help. I dont want to grieve more friends because of shitty employers. I did get fired while on leave. I also got threatened with a 10 page psychotic letter calling me uncivil. This work ordeal put me into an IOP due to a suicidal ideation in June and I can't get anyone but my spouse to care. That's why the suicide rate is 41% for trans people. I don't wanna add to that but when it feels like you have people who specifically represent LGBT clients they'd show some empathy for them. Idk. It doesn't matter. I don't recommend Nik.

Yadira Ramirez is an excellent attorney. I was blindsided by false sexual assault allegations. Yadira was always calm, cool and collected. I felt she had my best intentions. She had a lot of patience when I got angry or upset because I didn't understand how the courts work, or how lawyers communicate with the courts, and also the laws. I felt more at ease once when she thoroughly explained how court proceedings take place. Although, I could not ever be fully at ease because of the implications in my case. We had evidence that showed my innocence. But even with that, I still felt anxiety because of how inconsistent the courts in America are. Yadira could have told me that I had a airtight case and that we were going to win in court. But she was honest and said that courts are unpredictable and that she can't guarantee a victory. Which I understand. But she also said that we do have good evidence and that would show favorably for me in court. Court was set for a Friday, and on Monday my accuser decided she wanted a consent agreement. I did not know what that was, and Yadira thoroughly explained what it was. The first draft of the consent agreement their attorney sent Yadira was bogus and unfair. Yadira told me to stand firm and not accept the terms. Yadira redlined the document an added language in my favor. Their side sent back another agreement, and Yadira once again said to stand my ground and not accept it... So finally 2 days before we're supposed to go to court. My accuser and her attorney caved and gave in to our terms and a much more favorable consent agreement, which ended up in a dismissal of my accuser's restraining order against me... I was extremely anxious and nervous the entire time, 3 months of absolute hell. Yadira gave me my life back and restored a little faith in the legal system. There are lawyers out there that 100% care about their clients and Yadira is absolutely one that cares. I recommend Yadira for any legal matters regarding restraining orders. Thank you Yadira

Thomas Ybarra is a highly organized and knowledgeable attorney and I'm so grateful for his attention to detail when it came to my divorce proceedings. He was always honest with me about what to expect and also heard me when I told him what I wanted/needed. He was able to successfully argue my position for sole custody of my two children, secure me spousal support and child support, and negotiate an agreement that allowed me to keep my house. His attention to my case was constant and I could always get ahold of him when I needed advice. I highly recommend Mr. Ybarra's counsel if you are looking for representation in a divorce or child custody case. He knows the law and is able to explain how the process works. He made my very volatile divorce bearable and having him in my corner was a complete godsend. No one truly wins in divorce, but in my case he got me a big win on paper. With a cold call I found Lake. Wow did we get lucky! Lake provided us with guidance and integrity throughout the process which was quite complicated. He explained the lawsuit process clearly to ensure that we understood how it all works. He filed all the documents through the court and corresponded with the opposing attorney in a timely manner. He also made himself available to me when I was feeling especially low, making me feel better. We were able to work out a deal that worked for both us and our relative. We are so grateful to Lake for getting us through this!

I hired Michael Owens and Christina Stephenson as a team to represent me in an employment dispute. Life is certainly not fair and not every dispute requires legal intervention, but when it does the fallout is typically ugly. When I first hired Michael and Christina to look into a Whistleblower retaliation claim, I was reeling from the aftershocks and uncertainty of an unfair termination just days before Christmas. Would I lose my house? Would I be able to afford to keep my child in school? How would I regain my confidence that I could find a job where I wouldn't be punished for trying to do the right thing? This isn't the state of mind from which a person typically has the presence to right a wrong or set the record straight and the law provides some remedy, but on a pretty tight timeline. Michael and Christina both took the time needed to listen, understand the case, and sort the legal issues involved from perception and emotion. They were able to help me understand the difference between what is illegal and what is unfair and to direct me to seek the appropriate remedies for each. When it came to what was illegal, they were perceptive, smart, organized and thorough in their review and presentation of the facts. When it came to what was unfair, they respectfully listened, but also encouraged me to continue seeking the remedy of time and introspection to heal. In this way they were skillful advocates. Knowing that they were capably handling the legal arguments related to my values of transparency, efficiency and accountability allowed me to shore up my life, make sure my child and home were safe and to process what had happened. Prior to ever pursuing a legal remedy for a dispute, I would caution anyone to ask if your values compel you to spend years reliving something unfair and disruptive to your life. If the conclusion you reach says, "I couldn't live with myself if I didn't do this," then you would be lucky to have the professional, capable and kind representation of Michael Owens and Christina Stephenson.

His input was invaluable in helping me put together a very solid and concise case to prove my side of the story. He was clearly an expert in the state employment code, and pointed me to the most important and relevant statutes to my case therein. He also showed that he really cared about me and the results of my case, and was conscientious about follow-up. I would highly recommend Mike Owens to anyone in need of an employment attorney.

He never pushed me toward a particular decision, but rather made sure that I completely understood all of my options at all times, and provided his best recommendations so that I could decide myself. Mike truly cares about fighting for the best possible outcome for each individual, whatever that takes. His fee structure is fair, and made representation accessible to me. I can't thank Daniel Snyder and his team enough for helping me through the most traumatizing experience in my career. Living with a disability is already difficult itself, but then to have an employer that discriminates against you is devastating. I worked for a public agency that denied my ADA accommodations and engaged in unfair labor practices. I was chronically treated differently, unfairly and badly by my employer and after filing a BOLI complaint, they retaliated against me leading to my termination. Daniel Snyder came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Feeling hopeless, I scheduled a consultation with Mr. Snyder. Immediately I felt supported and I knew he was the right attorney to help me. Dan is a straight shooter and follows through with what he says. He was not intimidated to represent me against a public agency of attorneys. He is confident and will go above and beyond the call of duty leaving no rock unturned. Because of his hard work and excellent legal tactics I was able to get justice! Thank you Dan and team for your support. I absolutely encourage anyone that is seeking an attorney that will have your back to choose, DANIEL SNYDER!

I was enrolled and through 2 years of my graduate program for a Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree while in the final term, registered to graduate and with a 3.24 GPA. I was ready to walk across the stage to complete my life's dream and then become a therapist. I was kicked out abruptly without reason or incident, and it was shortly after a medical event. I immediately started the search for a lawyer and connected with Daniels assistant, Paul, who was right away able to connect Dan with me, who took down all the relevant details. Nearly two years later, Dan has personally represented me and took my life back from those that injured me. Throughout the entire time of representing me, Dan would personally email me within seconds to minutes of my communication, it was incredible. He was confident and knowledgeable, organized and tactful and intelligent, absolutely the caliber of person who should have a role dealing with laws and justice. The two parties that were against me both had no choice but to settle, and I am now living my life more healthy and happy than I have been in many years, and I owe much of this to Dan and his law offices.

Bronson James is the attorney that the Super 100 attorneys go to for expert legal advice. A noted authority in both Federal and Oregon criminal law as well as an expert appeal tactician Mr. James’ legal opinion is also asked for by Court Judges prior to their rulings. Mr. James was on the “short list” for consideration as one of Oregon’s state Appellant Judges. Justly earned as he successfully argued the 2014 U.S. Supreme Court case Riley v. California as counsel for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Brennan Center for Justice. In this landmark Supreme Court decision, national law enforcement officers now can no longer search cell phones without a court ordered search warrant based upon probable cause. I was fortunate to have Mr. James on my legal defense team as he was able to recommend and negotiate the best possible outcome for my case based on his legal acumen and professional reputation. I most strongly recommend Mr. James either as your primary defense council or to work with your primary defense council during trial to prepare the strongest appeal case if necessary. Mr. James is one of those few professional attorneys who can give you your life back.

I was planning on starting a nanobrewery and needed to trademark a name. He did the research and then my funds were wiped out in a family emergency. So he waited patiently until I got new funding, we finally had a face-to-face, we discussed the new name to be researched and helping with licensing paperwork. Then I had an emotional meltdown and decided to not go through with it. Alex was so great, so patient. Thanks Alex!

Attorney Christopher Kuhlman is an excellent, personable, knowledgeable, caring and extremely trustworthy lawyer who always showed that he had my best interests in mind and I will remain forever grateful to him for his service and dedication in the handling my legal case for nearly 10 years. Attorney Kuhlman has a strong eye for detail and organization and an amazing ability to process large volumes of information extremely quickly. He combined these abilities with his exceptional legal-writing, superior research and excellent analytical skills in order to compose the winning briefs, motions and arguments that he used for my case. His calm demeanor and exemplary gift in public speaking was clearly seen in his representation of me before various courts and judges (including the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Minnesota Appellate Courts) with utter professionalism and expertise, which also helped him to gain the upper-hand in court and in the winning of my case. In addition, Attorney Kuhlman’s dedication to justice is so strong that, he was even willing to provide his representation in such a way as to support a client who could not have, otherwise, even been able to afford legal counsel. In fact, during the (nearly 10) years that Attorney Kuhlman represented me as a client, not only did he not receive a penny of payment until after my case had been won by him, but, on many occasions, he even also went so far as to cover the costs of court fees on my behalf. On top of protecting and securing my rights, by way of filing and winning my lawsuit, Attorney Kuhlman also defended both me and my personal and professional reputation from the baseless and false accusations that the opposing counsel chose to fabricate about me as a main part of their defense. In fact, Attorney Kuhlman was my beacon of hope during periods when my legal options appeared to have been limited to none -- and the likelihood of a satisfactory resolution seemed impossible. Also, he was so dedicated to my case and to bringing me the justice that we both felt that I deserved that, he repeatedly took my case as high as the Minnesota Supreme Court in order to win justice for me. And, thanks to Attorney Kuhlman’s legal brilliance, expertise and fight for justice on my behalf, Minnesota Law has been changed, and this law could positively affect other regions of the nation as well. His sincere empathy, and dedication to justice on my behalf, provided emotional support to me during a period of the most difficult time of my adult life and I would highly recommend him to anyone without reservation.

I hired Kevin Lucey after a recommendation from a music business attorney I occasionally work with. Turned out to be a great choice as Kevin led me through this agonizing process with great efficiency. Kevin Lucey is an expert with dealing with these hard to deal with insurance companies. Insurance companies would be perfectly happy to offer nothing for someone in a personal injury situation and Kevin navigated and handled the claim in a timely and efficient manner. I can't imagine having to try and deal with them myself. My gut reaction when I spoke with the claims adjuster was that they were going to try and screw me as best they could. Kevin knows how to deal with insurance companies and I highly recommend him!

Mr. Burgess and his team provided exceptional service and, frankly, unexpected positive results in a Federal Whistleblower Retaliation case just over a year ago. Due to Mr. Burgess, determination, knowledge, and artful management of the hearings, we prevailed. In addition, Mr. Burgess negotiated an acceptable settlement to a separate Discrimination complaint (EEOC) brought against the same Federal agency. These cases are complex and quite difficult with the purse and legal infrastructure of the Federal Government stacked up against plaintiffs with limited resources. Mr. Burgess took the Federal government to task twice, on my behalf, and prevailed both times. Mr. Burgess passion was evident throughout the process. Mr. Burgess' remarkable oratory skill was on full display during extemporaneous closing remarks where he pulled together two days' of witness testimony and key points from hundreds of pages of evidence to close the door on the Federal attorneys' arguments. When Mr. Burgess finished, the opposing team looked resigned and simply shook their heads. I recommend Mr. Burgess to anyone who needs representation in his areas of expertise. I will certainly seek his counsel again if I am ever in need of legal representation. Thank you John. You are a very good attorney and I appreciate your professional ability. More importantly, I appreciate your compassion and support through a very difficult and lengthy process. Your belief in me and the fact that you took the time to listen and empathize made all the difference. Thanks for taking the time to be real.

At 8 months pregnant the car I was driving got t-boned and totaled by a vehicle that ran a stop sign. I had a horrible time dealing with the insurance company and it's representatives especially considering my pregnancy the physical state I was in resulting from the accident. I am the sort of person that would not seek legal counsel under normal circumstances, but I am so glad I did in this case! Mr. Lynn Smith has gone above and beyond not only in seeing to my legal needs in a way that has served my best interests, but has also been considerate of my emotional needs and circumstances as well. He has been thoroughly informative every step of the way regrading the resolving of my case, and has displayed exceptional communication skills. He has a fantastic lawyerly bed-side manner, and has consistently put me at ease throughout this sometimes difficult process. Hehas not only gained my confidence in his abilities, but also has continually strengthened my own sometimes weakened self-confidence levels regarding the outcome of my case. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I haven't always been easy to get a hold of, and at times I was slow to fulfill tasks I agreed to complete in order to move the case along. Mr. Smith never failed to show me patience, compassion, and kindness. On the other hand, he was very easy to reach when I needed him, and quick to respond to my email and voice messages. Mr. Smith has EXCELLENT client care skills, and never fails to make me feel like his most important client no matter what else he has on his plate! I highly recommend his services, and will not hesitate to employ his experience and legal services in the future should the need arise. Thank you Mr. Smith!

Michael V. Nixon is a lawyer who exemplifies the best qualities of a professional. His careful planning and acute attention to detail were instrumental in obtaining a positive result, in spite of, being presented with a daunting challenge. Mr. Nixon's experience and professional demeanor became evident very early on. His timely case updates kept me informed of all relevant developments, and he would not act with out first consulting with myself. Strategy development with consideration for contingencies was one of Mr. Nixon's most impressive qualities. At no point during our time together was he without an idea or backup plan. He implemented his strategies wonderfully and never lost focus of the end goal. As an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, I pride myself in being able to recognize professionalism, a quality clearly present in Mr. Nixon. It was pleasure working with him on this case and I will not hesitate in seeking his assistance in the future.

Michael has a great sense of self. He is aware of both his capabilities and limitations. He excels at organization and community strategy and has the ability to fashion the appropriate legal strategy and approach to fit the situation at hand. As the Chief Executive of my organization it was extremely difficult to navigate and separate all of the key issues. Prior to working with Michael I did not have an effective sounding board for the issues that I was dealing with, so it was extremely helpful to have a non biased sounding board in Michael who understood the dynamics related to both the organizational, political and legal issues involved. Other lawyers advised that the issues that I was dealing with were to complex for them to touch. They all recommended Michael. It was an excellent choice.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:
