SaraEllen Hutchinson is an excellent lawyer in consumer protection. I was trying to handle a problem myself with one of the credit reporting agencies. It was going on for 7 months, and not only was I getting nowhere, it was actually getting worse. I was scared, angry, and completely locked out of my credit report, while ID thieves were in. I called SaraEllen's office on a Friday at 5:00 pm. She emailed me the same evening, and by Monday morning she was handling my case. She has a strong working relationship with other lawyers, and within 2 months she had everything corrected. She represented me and handled everything with professionalism, and her knowledge of the credit protection laws. I am so happy with the outcome, and if I ever need need help in this area of law again, I won't hesitate hiring her!

My attorney SaraEllen, has given me the opportunity to have a fresh start in building a career for myself. SaraEllen has helped me get through a very emotional and terrifying experience with debt collection at the age of 20. She has been motivated and strong willed through out my whole case and also helping me dispute other problems that I wasn't even sure was possible without having to just bite the bullet and take it as it came at me. She was very knowledgable and taught me how to stand up for myself in situations that I knew nothing about. SaraEllen is a person who I would definitely recommend to anyone who is in need of help with any circumstances similar to mine. Thank you so much, SaraEllen you are the absolute BEST!

Lara Herrmann & her entire team absolutely rock! This is the first time I’ve ever hired an attorney and, under the advice of my chiropractor, I’m so glad I did! Lara is not only a top notch attorney but she’s also honest, caring, personable & compassionate. The entire team possesses a rare balance of both heart & intelligence. I cannot stress enough to use these guys...they are simply that good!

Lara Herrmann is top notch and has earned my highest recommendation. She handled my case with such ease, and I was able to get the medical care that I needed. She can be very hands on, or in my case, I preferred to do everything over the phone and electronically. They were amazing, so on top of it and not once did I have to follow up with them to check on where they were at in the process. She will relieve you from many, many headaches and provide the advice you are seeking. I have already referred them two cases, and I plan to continue to send close friends and family their way.

Talbot refused to take my case when Ben was under him. Ben saw my case and called me 3 days later and he took my case and won. I was a scared 21 year old and he made me feel okay with the whole process. He told me from day 1 that the insurance had 3 years before court and it would take them almost 3 years to agree to settle. He was honest and compassionate. I would hire him again if I ever needed his help.

My philosophy is: If I need the services of an attorney, I need the best. If I don't need the best, I have decided that I don't need an attorney. I have had excellent representation all of my adult life. Others have retires and this guy is hands down the very best of the best.

I had a consultation with Ben and it was one of the best time of life. Even though he is highly respected and very rich he is still very down to earth. Ben is a very good listener and lawyer. Without hesitation I would recommend him to everyone because he can see things that other lawyers can't even think of. You need these type of people in your life and of course in your legal battle.

I am a homeowner who was sued by a neighbor who filed a "spite" lawsuit against me. Joe successfully defended me against "over-the-top" allegations, by skillfully & methodically debunking the claims. He persistently unraveled the plaintiff's legal maneuvering to attempt to construct a case out of fabrications. To do that, Joe used thoughtful strategy in his presentation of the actual facts of the case, and continually maintained a low-key, articulate professionalism that was very effective. It was obvious in the courtroom that he was respected by the judges who heard various portions of the case. Joe has a high standard of principled ethics that enable him to provide excellent representation. This lawsuit dragged on for over 3 years, & yet my stress level was minimal because I was extremely confident of Joe's abilities to bring about a favorable resolution in my defense. He did not let me down. Another great thing about Joe, is that being the man of integrity he is, I KNOW he would have never chosen to represent the type of individual who sued me--no matter how much they would have been willing to pay him for the representation. Joe Diaz gets an A-plus in my review.

I was facing 6 months in jail and losing my career. He was able to get my charged reduced to a DWLS 2nd and I received 90 days of Electronic Home Monitoring. I am still employed with my company I have been with for 5 years! Jay is very knowledgeable of DUI and DWLS defense. He always kept me in the loop and is very supportive during difficult times.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the way Michael Clark and his incredible team handled my case. From start to finish, he made the process smooth and stress-free, allowing me to place full trust in his expertise. He was meticulous in detailing every step of the procedure, ensuring I was well-informed and comfortable with the direction we were taking. His commitment to my well-being extended beyond the legal aspects—he helped me find the right answers to my physical concerns and guided me toward appropriate medical treatment for my injuries. His promptness in returning my calls and addressing any questions I had was truly reassuring. I’m extremely satisfied with the outcome and highly recommend his services to anyone seeking a dedicated, kind hearted and knowledgeable attorney.

Derek is smart and aggressive. James is calculated and calm, which gives their firm an almost perfect balance. Danely is very polite and communicative. There wasn’t one time that I reached out and didn’t get a reply or an answer. Derek is transparent and communicates efficiently. He really cares about his clients and who he represents. Although I didn’t get the exact results I wanted (based on a decision I made) I feel that we still got a pretty good offer from the prosecutor (charges will eventually be dismissed) and I’m very happy with their service. The only negative thing I can share is that it took way too long to come to a conclusion IMO and communication with the court/prosecutor seemed very “wishy washy” at times, but thats typical when dealing with “the system” If you need a criminal defense attorney in South King County or Pierce County I would highly recommend Smith and White! They are worth the investment!

Nothing bad to say about Mr. Douglas. So far, he is the only attorney to really look into our civil rights case. The case I have is a bit complex. I can tell through corresponding with Mr. Douglas, he is a really good attorney to have on your side. He's sharp, really reviews the case, and seems totally honest with his clients or potential clients. Mr. Douglas said to me we have a valid claim, but he simply didn't have time to pursue my case. So, I did want to thank him for going through the case files, looking at the video, and even providing another attorney by name that might be able to attend to our case. Mr. Douglas is the real deal.

When I met Cole Douglas for the first time, I was nervous and embarrassed to tell my story, but I knew I needed to if I wanted to be heard. My case was of a very personal and sensitive nature, and it was very uncomfortable for me to even talk about it. Cole listened to my story without rushing me, asked detailed questions, and treated me with total respect. When I finished giving my statement, Cole went over our options in detail and took his time explaining them to me. Once we made the decision to move forward, he returned calls and emails, and always kept me apprised of the process. I am very grateful that I had Cole Douglas as my advocate, and I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs a caring, confident, and qualified attorney.

When I think of my time with Cindy Wysocki, Esq., tears of deep gratitude literally come to my eyes as I recall her strength and gentleness, her humor and sharp critical thinking, her willingness to get into the ultimate fighting cage we call the judicial system and her reluctance to throw a punch, and her commitment to fairness and open-hearted compassion. To the lawyer or firm across the virtual table, Cindy must seem formidable and relentless. To me as her client-friend, she was comforting, encouraging, and grounding. I never had to yield my voice or stuff down my questions. AND, Cindy held my concerns and fears, my heightened emotions and (sometimes) clear intuitive insights respectfully while guiding them in positive, productive ways. And best of all, Cindy knew me well enough at the end of a grueling process to be able to then assist and guide me in my needs to safeguard my estate and financial assets to be sure to leave them secure for the ones I love the most. Above all, I am forever grateful to Cindy for accompanying me as a caring fellow human being during one of the most devastating times of my personal life journey. She stayed by my side through unprecedented conditions, with unconditional care and concern, as one of the few who did in my life. Cindy is a legal Bodhisattva!!

I was represented by Mr. Richard Wooster of Kram & Wooster for a civil case involving a wrongful termination from 2015 to settlement in 2018. After a short consultation Mr. Wooster took me on as a client. From the beginning Mr. Wooster listened to me as I explain what I experienced with my employer and quickly identified a number of occasions where my rights had been ignored or deliberately violated. He then went on the attack on my behalf. First filing a complaint with the EEOC that a law suit in federal court. As my case proceed during this process we met regularly in person and by phone and I was always kept informed with all matter regarding the status of my case and what to expect next. Whenever I had a question or became anxious he would talk me through my options and assure me the we were in control of the process. He went to great lengths to explain important legal terms and procedures to me and my family so that we could remain calm and confident throughout the process. He coached and prepared me for my deposition and for trail. However, he was able to obtain a generous settlement for me and avoid trail. Mr. Wooster knows how to use the law to his clients advantage. He was not intimidated by judges or the big dollar corporate attorneys that my employer threw at us and never let anyone take advantage of me. His experience and understanding of the legal process meant nothing caught us by surprised or unprepared. He kept all financial matters and transactions involving my case open and transparent. I received regular invoices detailing cost, fees etc and explanations for them. All fees, and expense were discussed and determined by me to be fair and reasonable. I hired Mr. Cochran years ago, when he was with another law firm, and he did an outstanding job, winning us both a substantial amount of money. Fast forward 18 years, and I'm once again in need of a good attorney, for a job related injury. So, i look up Mr. Cochran, and reach out to his law firm. After several emails with his assistant, a phone consultation is arranged. During the conversation he says that he's not sure if he can represent me, and is also unsure if I can sue my employer, or if I'll have to sue workers comp. He tells me that he will look into it, and if he's unable to represent me, he'll talk to some buddies in Idaho (where I'm at), and recommend someone to me. After 3+ months of writing emails back and forth with his assistant, and never getting any answers, I've decided to move on, and find another attorney. I have no doubt, that Mr. Cochran is a brilliant attorney, i just wonder about his character

i’m not sure exactly why Darrell is at four stars on this rating ,when he should be at five and preferably 10 ,Mr. Cochran visited me when I was in a state penitentiary ,and with his own time and resources he battled insurance companies and the state Attorney General’s office , who with unlimited resources at their disposal re fused to admit liability in my case or accept any culpibility, Darrell steadfastly protected my interests when at the time I was indigent and had no resources to fight these huge entities that were violating my civil rights and liberties ..Mr. Cochran has throughout his entire career made it a staple to his itinerary to fight for people who cannot afford to fight for themselves against entities and corporations with unlimited resources who utilize their power and influence to violate the civil liberties of others ..Darrell Cochran embodies every attribute that I wish every attorney in the state or in the country had for their professionalism ,,,put it quite simply the best Atty I’ve ever seen in my life, and that’s a fact

He represented me in my divorce and was very responsive and helpful throughout the process, that is until I paid him. I received a portion of my settlement and he held $1000 in trust in case any issues came up. Since then, I have not gotten my settlement in it’s entirety, and have made several attempts to contact Joel because he has my money in trust. I have explained the issue via email, and in my many voicemails, all of which are documented. He recently (FINALLY) responded after several months asking what the issue was. Are you kidding me? And then he charged me for that response never acknowledging my actual issue. I am incredibly disappointed and am at a loss as to what to do. I will be going to the BBB with my documtation and going to the courthouse.

Mr. Flores represented my son in a difficult modification of parenting plan, in which he was trying to get custody of his little boy. Mr. Flores helped my son succeed in changing the custody. He kept us focused on legally how we should proceed in the case, but at the same time was very involved and caring about what my son and his little boy were going through. I would highly recommend Mr. Flores. He is a wonderful attorney!

Joel was hired by us in 2013 for child custody case. He got everything we were asking for granted and didn't cut corners. Joel has been available for any questions we had regarding any case we have. My mother-in-law works with Joel and he is an outstanding boss. I am very humbled to have him be apart of life journeys. He cares about the best interest of my step children and has never given us bad advice. I highly recommend Joel as an attorney.

Barbara Joe is a superior trial lawyer who has mastered her discipline. I have used her twice in two equally as difficult of cases with excellent outcomes. She conducts her business in the most professional manner like no other. In Pierce County, all trial lawyers know her and respect her.

My case was mishandled due to Barbara Jo's awful demeanor in court with opposing counsel and the Judge. To be specific, Judge Arend. I heard that she was a "go-getter", but she overcharged me, rarely, if ever, returned emails/phone calls, and her aggressive style in court was repeatedly rude and unsuccessful. This was on a custody case in 2010-2011 and I would never use her again.

I had a bad experience with Mrs. Sylvester and her law office. I called her office several times and never could get a hold of her. She has too many clients and I did not feel like she had time to devote herself to my case. Because of that, I do not recommend her to anyone.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
