My advice to anyone that has to deal with this Chancellor is to run. He is unprofessional he doesn't know what he's doing in his new job as Chancellor. He schedules appearances and then he backs out it happened to me twice. He doesn't know the law and I'm not the only one that has commented on this. IfJudge Butler was still there my experience would never have happened.

Our experience with Ms. Gay has been wonderful. Since our first meeting with her she took her time to talk to us about the situation, the procedure and what to expect . I love that she takes the time to explain everything and answer every question , she replies to ALL of our emails and phone calls. I feel we couldn't be in better hands.

After getting myself into serious enough trouble that it could have derailed my life, I couldn't be happier or more relieved after Mr. Grady Smith handled my case. After speaking with Mr. Morrell about my case, he recommended Mr. Smith as he was the most familiar with my local law enforcement and it certainly worked in my favor. Mr. Smith was very polite, knowledgeable, and explained everything in a way I could easily understand. I can't stress enough that the outcome was much better than I, or my family and friends, could have ever expected. I'll be recommending this law firm to anyone who asks for as long as I'm around.

I had the pleasure of working with Attorney Ashley Walter and the entire team, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results. From the very start, they were attentive, thorough, and clearly explained the legal process to me, ensuring I understood every step. Their expertise and commitment to my case were evident, and it was clear they genuinely cared about achieving the best outcome for me. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, we reached a successful resolution, and I felt supported the entire way. If you’re looking for an attorney who is not only skilled but also compassionate and responsive, I highly recommend HMC Civil Rights. They made what could have been a stressful situation much easier to navigate. Thank you so much again and God bless.

The ENTIRE HMC Civil Rights team, especially Heather and Erica, have been a huge blessing! They fought hard for me, and never once made me feel like I was just "another number" to them. They were there for me every step of the way, and made sure I got what I deserved! I would recommend them again and again for anyone who has been discriminated against or mistreated by an employer for something out of their control. This is, BY FAR, the best team in Middle Tennessee, and I'm so grateful for all their hard work and guidance in my case!

Holland and Andrew are the absolute BEST in the business. I interviewed several attorneys before choosing them, and they immediately treated me with respect as a female entrepreneur. Andrew filed my trademarks in a timely manner and they were approved ahead of schedule! Holland is a mastermind with contracts and he has walked me through incredibly difficult paperwork, making me feel welcome and informed the entire journey. These guys are BRILLIANT, but what's kept me a forever client is how humble and kind they are (proving all "lawyer jokes" wrong!) If you feel intimidated or confused by legal matters, these guys will come alongside you and tackle it with prestige and class. I'm proud to call them my attorneys and look forward to relying on them in the years ahead!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I began the journey to trademark my plant-based product line in May 2024, and let me tell you, Holland made the entire process a breeze! 🌬️ From start to finish, he kept me informed every step of the way. What I loved most was how seamless he made everything feel—no confusion, no stress, just smooth sailing! 🛳️ He answered every single one of my questions with ease and expertise. 🧠✨ Holland ensured I fully understood each part of the process before moving forward, taking all the guesswork out of it. And the best part? I'll have a registered mark by December 2024! 🎉 If you're looking to trademark and want someone who truly knows their stuff, Holland is your guy! 🙌🏾

This is a bummer because, as you’ll see, I have not left a negative review in the 15 years of having my account: I recently worked with Andrew to obtain advice on a silent partnership contract that was very bare bones (a couple hundred words in length). I was surprised to see that I was charged $438 for Andrew to read this incredibly small document and provide maybe 100 words of feedback. (Will update with screen shots once I have redacted the info) I ended up going with another lawyer who was able to provide a couple of rounds of feedback on this document for about the same price and sharing me he felt I overpaid greatly for the services provided. To be fair, Andrew was thorough and fast, which is why it’s an anomaly this did not extend to his charges and the time he stated required almost 2 hours of billing. I hate to leave a review like this but I communicated this information to Andrew asking to split the difference which would have him still making $250 for the single volley of feedback but he was unwilling to work with me.

If you need a lawyer who will advocate for you and provide you with assurance throughout the entire process of a divorce or mediation, search no further. Richard has been a blessing; after sharing my struggles during my divorce and my poor experience with my previous attorney, he stepped in to assist in every detail possible. He facilitated a fair mediation between my spouse and me today. Having someone you can trust during such a challenging and painful time, like a divorce, is crucial. I wholeheartedly recommend Richard; you will feel like he is a family member. He really cares about his clients! Which is hard to find these days.

Called Jason a couple days before my court date. After a couple of other attorneys wouldn’t return my calls. He called me in for a consultation and I gladly hired him. What I liked about him is he didn’t make any empty promises that some of these guys will make. He did promise to work any angle he could use to get my charges lowered or dropped. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome facing a minimum 120 days in jail and a 6 year license suspension. This would have ruined me financially. I ended up with a plea down to 48 hours and charged with a first offense charge. Honestly think I might’ve got out of it all together if I asked him to go further with it but it wasn’t a risk I was willing to take with that great of an offer. I also want to say that under the circumstances I thought they were going to fry me if they could. He was worth double the money I paid him. In fact I have paid twice as much with not near the results. I hope I never need an attorneys services again but if I do there’s no question who that will be. Hi staff was great as well.

Jason is a great attorney who fights for you and doesn’t just take your money. Jason worked very hard on a case for me and it got transferred to another state. He didn’t just turn his back on me, he helped me get some things cleared up here in Tn so I can move forward in WVa. I feel Jason is honest and a compassionate man who doesn’t do his job for just the money. Jason truly fights to help his clients, and you don’t have to mortgage your home to hire him. She is very thorough, caring, understanding and very, very good at her job. She made my experience much more of a delight than I thought was possible. I also want to mention her assistant, Mrs Keri. She was also an instrumental part of making my experience a positive one. Mrs Keri is much like Mrs. Teresa with having very strong people skills and so very helpful throughout the entire process. My troubles started 4 years ago when a detective from Marshal county set me up and proceeded to charge me with a felony that I didn't do. At the time I had no record or knowledge of the law. I just wanted things behind me. I hired a lawyer who was part of the Marshall county cartel and he just went along with everything they said. Long story short I now have a target on me because I bought a farm that Tony Nichols wanted. That man was trying to take advantage of me being ignorant to the law. Last I heard they were getting me on several felonies and sending me to prison for 10+ years. I then got in contact with Ross and he had different plans so I was able to walk out of the hell hole that is Marshall county court house a free man. Ross is so personable and knowledgeable, it gives him the advantage over any other lawyer. If you've been hung out to dry and see no way out from the corruption that we call small town Tennessee politics, do yourself a favor and get Ross Brazil on your side. P.S. the DA in Marshall County is corrupt as all get out. They all are down there and need to be stopped.

I hired Daniel as my attorney for an EEOC workplace discrimination case that was eventually resolved through negotiation. I was very hesitant to face the other party’s lawyers with the fear of them taking advantage of my lack of knowledge for how these legal processes work. I gave Daniel my full trust, and he excelled at educating and guiding me through the entire process. He was very communicative and supportive, which made me feel at ease and gave me the confidence I needed when dealing with such a stressful circumstance. Daniel was driven to help me have the best possible outcome and I couldn’t have done this without him.

My lawyer represented 4 coworkers with a degree of similarity to their respective cases. He was able to use the collective complaint to negotiate a good settlement for all concerned. Even for those whose cases, taken individually, would never have been successful. Speaking as one of the weaker cases, I am extremely pleased with the result!

Mark guided our company through a very challenging matter. From our first meeting he put our team at ease with the litigation process. Although the matter took two years to resolve, Mark advised us along the way to ensure we got the very best outcome. The result exceeded our highest expectation. Mark Nolan and his law firm Batson Nolan have handled several litigation matters for my client, a municipal corporation, in the areas of civil rights (Section 1983 litigation), governmental tort liability, and employment discrimination. In each case he and his firm rendered outstanding service while keeping litigations costs to a minimum. He and the other attorneys of his firm are very knowledgeable in their areas of expertise and work hard to obtain favorable results. I would not hesitate to hire Mr. Nolan and his firm again. Great lawyer and litigator!

I had an existing business contract that was between family members and non family members.Original contract was kind of thrown together quickly without council and in doing so problems soon arose. With having family members being involved on both sides feelings and emotions can become an issue if not careful. Cynthia recognized this from the onset and carefully walked us through the entire restructuring process where in the end both sides were satisfied. We now have a clear contract that has taken undue pressure off both sides. I am very happy to have found Cynthia and she was a true pleasure to work with. Would highly recommend her services.

The review I'm giving is NOT paid advertising. I am freely giving this review based on our experience. On 7/22/2021 my son was arrested and charged with a felony. My heart broke in a million pieces. I knew my child didn't commit the crime. But I also knew that regardless my son would still have to go through the process. After a few text messages, I knew that Mr. Brandon Hall would do his best to help my son. I explained the situation to the best of my knowledge. I told Mr. Brandon Hall that sometime my son makes bad decision. But I knew that this decision was different from any other bad decisions he had made in the past. Mr. Brandon Hall texted me back in a few days and told me that he would be happy to help my son. "PARENTS" a load was lifted off my shoulders instantly. Mr. Hall has never meet me but I'm guessing he is a parent himself. I'm not sure but I believe Mr. Hall could feel my pain through our text messages. Mr. Hall texted me from his home several times. " I thought to myself this has to be an outstanding lawyer" .. Who texts their clients parent in the comfort of their home. I tell you who " MR. BRANDON HALL" AFTER THAT I WAS SOLD I KNEW THAT HE WOULD DO HIS VERY BEST TO HELP MY SON CHARGES BE DISMISSED. " I'M HAPPY TO SAY THAT ON 9/21/2021 MY SON CHARGES WAS DISMISSED!!! Thank you so much for helping my son and me. I'm hoping that my son has learned something from this experience. We will continue to tell others about your outstanding service. FYI Mr. Brandon Hall replies faster to text messages via phone calls LOL.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
