I was going through one of the most difficult and challenging moments of my life last year, and then I was fortunate enough to have met Andrew Delaney. I sit here today in amazing spirits because of his help and amazing legal services. I always felt cared for, protected and informed throughout his representation and was always comfortable enough to ask questions which were met with thorough explanations and informative strategies. I am beyond grateful for his help and would encourage anyone who is considering Andrew for representation to rest assured that he is an amazing lawyer who truly cares and fights for you. I couldn’t have done it without him. Thanks Andrew!

Andy Delaney is the best attorney on planet earth. He is Tom Brady meets William Wallace meets Gandalf. My wife and I were in an all-of-a-sudden horrible and complex situation through no fault of our own (which I won’t be getting into here). We exhausted several family and friend recommendations for legal counsel in this area but it seemed that no one could/would help with our case. Then, after seeing the high Google review ratings, we decided to take a chance on MDR who were at least willing to meet with me. About five minutes into the meeting, realizing the complexity of the situation, the guy I was meeting with says, “I think I need to get my boss.” Enter Andy… Within one hour I walked out with a cohesive plan of action, and (despite MONTHS of research on my own) a hundred times more understanding of the legal circumstances we were in. Andy ended up taking over our case and delivered like you read about. I can’t say enough good things about Andy. The dude saved our bacon when we needed it most. There are already plenty of reviews talking about how intelligent, professional, funny, and caring he is (all of which I absolutely agree with); so I'll just say that if you're seeking legal counsel and you find anyone on earth that's better than Andy... I owe you $50. He is the best there is, end of story. Andy is the GOAT.

Austin truly cares about his clients and you are definitely not just another case when Austin is representing you. He always gets back to you to answer all questions either through email or a phone call or both when necessary. He makes sure to pay attention to details and he will see your case through from start to finish. Austin is truly one of the "good guys" a true modern day Perry Mason mold of a lawyer who will genuinely do his best to represent you and he will not just try to push you through the system like a lot of lawyers want to do these days. He has a five star rating with his communication skills and with his knowledge of Vermont laws. I never plan to ever be in trouble with the law again but if ever the need arises I will not hesitate to have Austin represent me once again.

Working with Andy Montroll was a fabulous experience. From a Real Estate Broker's perspective, sometimes we feel it is frustrating working with Attorneys as they can not be as communicative as we would like. This was not the case with Andy! He made himself always available to talk to, or returned my calls promptly. When it came to the negotiating aspect he was confident, logical and very fair. He was a true pleasure to work with. I have had the pleasure to work with Andy Montroll for over two decades! He has provided our software and telecom divisions with sound advice, consistently and promptly, when under a time crunch. I appreciate his ability to provide counsel on the specific legal nuances, but also the understanding of business and commerical term considerations. He also is fluent in "layman-speak" for those of us who are more on the business side, but need an understanding and interpretation of legal terms. Having a trusted legal advisor like this is invaluable.

I have worked with Andy for about two decades, with him supporting our company's needs with respect to our customer contracts across two different business divisions - both of which are subscription based models. One business unit is encumbered with a heavy amount of regulatory and privacy complexities (as an FCC regulated entity), and the other is a software company with a different set of complexities, particulary in its service to heavily regulated financial sector clients. Andy is a true pleasure to work with - he is responsive, thorough and able to consider our key business concerns during negotiations. We have repeatedly entrusted Andy to represent our legal requests on existing and prospective client calls. His support has been instrumental in helping us to secure new business (even in cases where at the onset the requested contract changes looked insurmountable). I appreciate Andy's skills, alongside his pleasant demeanor and ability to translate legal nuances into an understandable business consideration standpoint.

There is no doubt in my mind that I would have never received to results I did in my case and the cases of the 2 others he represented had it not been for his excellent representation. I highly recommend him to anyone needing the very best representation possible in their case.

I have worked with Ted and his firm a handful of times in the past decade. I have always felt assured and confident that my issue will be resolved and handled professionally. Knowing that they are a phone call away when life gets rocky provides great solace. They are kind, welcoming, and take the pressure out of whatever challenging circumstance has brought you to them in the first place. Highly recommend.

I called ready to retain help. Unexpectedly, he sat on the phone with me for as many questions as I had and walked me through the process. He was so kind and made sure that I understood my rights and told me exactly what I needed to do and without having to retain him, as it seemed as there was reason to retain him beyond our conversation. I feel so much better and will absolutely work with him if the need ever arises. Seriously the nicest person I've spoken to!

Speaking on the phone was professional but, when I went through the retainer they sent me it was nuts. It’s a one sided retainer which puts your money in a escrow account which they won’t draw from, problem is, they also have a clause that gives the firm a raise if they choose, in pay and if you disagree they can take the retainer and there released for what you hired them for in the first place. Beware bad agreements unless you want to shovel the funds over at the firms whim. I own a company and have been dealing with lawyers for 40 years and I have never seen anything like this in my life time. They have total control once they’re hired be careful.

I had a lawyer through here for a couple years. While he had many clients he definitely came in ready to argue in my favor whenever my file was in rotation. I see a not so hot review on here;Wouldn't take it to heart. People need to understand these lawyers are not at your beck and call. They have many cases and are humans, not service robots. Mr.Kazakis always made sure to keep me updated and showed he's one of the good ones. The office is lovely, Receptionist is always kind. Good find.

Mr. Bond represented me in a consumer fraud case with a contractor. In the complaint he wrote to initiate the case, he misplaced the emphasis in a number of ways and also left out one crucial fact. When the contractor's lawyer responded with a motion to dismiss the case, this gaping hole played a major role in the judge's decision to dismiss. Mr. Bond then convinced me to appeal the dismissal -- at significant cost to me, of course. The other side then suggested mediation. It was in the mediation process that Mr. Bond demonstrated his most extraordinary incompetence. He started by insisting that we open by asking for an outrageous sum. This undermined our credibility from the outset and put the contractor on the defensive. All through the grueling negotiations, Mr. Bond stayed on the sidelines, basically an empty suit. After many hours, when I was very tired, I made the first move toward compromise, and the other side finally began to budge. At this point, Mr. Bond broke in, took me aside, and tried to convince me to accept their very first, ridiculously low offer! That was when I realized I was on my own. I managed to get thousands of dollars more only because I ignored his advice. The final sum, however, was much less than I needed to make myself whole. From the very beginning, Mr. Bond pulled rank on me as a lawyer and ignored suggestions I made that would have made our case stronger. (He thinks very highly of himself.) He was always in a hurry and never showed an interest in understanding the details of the case, nor was he ever committed to the main and indeed only goal, which was simply to recover enough money to repair the damage that had resulted from the incompetence, deceitfulness, and intransigence of the contractor. (The mediator actually told me that I had been "badly treated.") In retrospect, I believe my main goal never was Mr. Bond's goal. My reading is that it was a slow time for him (during covid), he needed the work, and it didn't matter to him how it worked out in the end: he'd be paid anyway. The standard caricature of a lawyer. How is it that I, who had never participated in mediation, was better at it on my first try than he was after countless similar experiences? I am fully convinced that had he not been in the room and I had handled the negotiations alone, I would have been able to recover enough money to come out even. He hurt that effort. He is a hapless negotiator. And since most such cases go to mediation, this is a crucial shortcoming. You're better not hiring this guy.

David is one of the few first-rate litigators in a small state. He was quick to grasp the key issues in our case, and unfailingly accurate in his understanding of how the law should apply - indeed considerably more so than our state court judges. His ability to recall facts is equal to the quality of his legal reasoning. I have rarely made fewer comments or edits on a brief than with David's, in more than three decades of managing preeminent attorneys in complex international litigation. Having seen perhaps a dozen of the state’s litigators in action, I have found David far superior in efficiency, effectiveness and value.

I used Windham law for a child abuse case about 6 years ago. I paid over $30,000 to Windham law. Sadly my attorney(who was wonderful) passed away before the final agreement was made. I explained that I truly couldn't afford anymore legal fees. It ended up being $600...for an agreement that I typed and they transferred and filed (crazy right). I guess all lawyers are greedy but they take the cake! Make sure you can afford to defend your children!!!!!

To make a long story short we hired Jon to update our bylaws. We paid him good money to basically copy from another associations bylaws. After the Board received the bylaws we realized we wanted the Declarations done over also. Jon told us we could do whatever we want with the Declarations as long as we get 60 pecent of the Owners to approve it. After the Board worked hard on rewriting the Declarations we had a meeting scheduled to review the bylaws. We also sent him the updated Declarations to review. Jon sent us back an email canceling the meeting accusing us of being cheap and belittling us in many ways. We were shocked!! We replied back to him saying that we don’t have a lot of experience as Board members and if we are going about this the wrong way please guide us. He still refused to meet with us. Jon never lived up to his retainer agreement and was very UNPROFESSIONAL!! We feel he was offended because we didn’t use him to rewrite the Declarations at an additional fee. As we said we don’t have a lot of experience but to be treated the way we were was totally wrong. We are open minded adults who should have been receiving advise from our attorney . Instead we were belittled and treated in a very unprofessional manner!! We recommend using another attorney!!

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
