Mike Magana is an excellent attorney that would recommend for any case you may have. I was looking at a good chunk of time and Mr. Magana got me probation with 30 days work release in county jail. He always kept me informed of what was going on, no matter how many cases he was seeing at the time. His associate/right hand man was just as amazing. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart!

For almost a year it SEEMED like nothing was getting done, little did I know Mike and his crew were working diligently on my case the whole time. I admit my frustration was hi and sense of trust began to wax cold as I only talked to Mike a few times. Much to my surprise, Mike took care of his business on the law side and in the court room!! I was out waaaay before I expected and let me just say.....I was facing some big time... multiple felonies...habitual...anything that could go against me WAS against me...I do have to first thank the good Lord..but my hat is off to Mr. Magana and so is my jail uniform thanks to him!!!!! Hey! Hey! Now I know that didn't sound right...but you guys know what I mean!! "Ain't no pee-pee in La Onda!!" Quote from "Popeye" movie "Blood in Blood Out"....but y'all knew that to.

Mr. Magana was court appointed for my nephew. When people found out who we had as an attorney they begin to tell me how bad he was, how all he wanted was money and didn’t do anything for their case. Needless to say I was skeptical going in… although a very busy man Mr. Magana was passionate, caring and did what he said he was going to do! He may text you and say 32 min or when he walks by you he may give you a one min sign, his voice mail may be full or he may not return your call as soon as you want, but if Michael says imma get him out you better believe he’s a man of his word! We had the honor of watching Michael work at the court, he ran from one end to the other while on the phone with a client and being stopped by clients asking when are you getting to me. After that long day in court he would then go to his office after 5pm and see upwards to 20 people. Mr. Magana told us guys I’m going to get him out and after only two weeks he did Dec. 22, 2021 a Christmas miracle. My advice is not to listen to others, form your own opinion because ever case is different. But if Michael Magana says he’s going to do it I assure you that he will. How many attorneys will give you their personal cell phone number and let you blow their phone up and text them 24/7 and when you see them greet you with compassion and a smile. If I hadn’t t been a part of my nephews case I would have never gotten to meet a really good man, on behalf of my nephew, my family and myself… Thank you Mr. Magana with all our hearts.

In 2004, I was charged with Aggravated Assault after I fought off an attacker at a public pool. I was charged with such a harsh crime because I'm a professional fighter. I was originally seated with a public defender who did NOT care about what the truth was. After nearly 3 years of back and forth preliminary hearings, and postponements, in 2007, I asked for a different lawyer. They gave me Mr. Smith, and then gave him only ONE month to prepare for a case that the prosecutor had nearly 3 years to build against me. We went to jury trial. I had 5 witnesses against me, and only myself as a defense. The jury was comprised of 11 white people, and only ONE black woman (I am a black man, the "victim" was a white man). To say the least, I was terrified. After only 45 minutes of deliberation, which is usually a bad sign, they came back with a verdict of NOT guilty because it was deemed as self defense. Due to Mr. Smith's ability to fully ensconce himself into my case with such a short notice, listen to me as the client, and his skills cross examining several witnesses who were lying, I am a free man today...the most incredible part is he was acting as a public defender for me at the time, which are notorious for NOT caring because they're not getting full pay. I would more than recommend Mr. Smith to anyone facing any court case.

Michelle is an outstanding attorney. I would strongly recommend her to anyone going through a Family law. You definitely want her on your side. She is an expert negotiator who has a keen attention to detail but appropriately balances that with the big picture. She guided me through the entire process in a highly effective manner. She operates with compassion and provides a realistic assessment of where you stand. She was responsive and were quick to answer questions/calls and turn things around. She did a great job of setting my expectations throughout and delivering a good outcome that I was very happy with. If you are looking for a Family attorney, you need look no further.

I highly recommend this law office for divorces/family law. Kacie Biebas was my attorney and she (and everyone in the office) was wonderful. Even though my case was a rough one, she stuck with me the entire time and didn't charge me an arm and a leg like my last lawyer did. She was very nice, helpful, she got things done in a timely manner, you could understand her explanations to you as to what is going on and the process it is going to take to get to the next step. I hope I wont need to use them again in the future, but if I did, then I will be going back to them. I appreciate everything that this law office has done for me. It means the world to me and I wouldn't be where I am today without their help.

This man is so incredibly rude. As a victim of domestic violence, I was referred to his office in an attempt to obtain a protective order for myself and my children. In the most patronizing tone I've ever heard, this man told me he declined my case because the abuse "wasn't bad enough" He said the judge wouldn't issue the protective order unless my spouse had "beat the brakes off of me". Completely unprofessional. This is exactly why domestic violence gets out of hand. People cannot get the help they need before it is too late. This man should lose his job. In no way is he an advocate for any victim of domestic violence.

One of the rudest most uncaring humans I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. His attitude is the worse. Mine is a domestic abuse case, that was picked up by the state of Texas, the judge ordered an emergency protective order. I wanted it extended. This man that beat me, broke my hand and finger. He beat me with a fan. Everything Soorholtz, was defending the jerk that hurt me. When he called me, the first thing he said to me was " so i hear you got the crap beat out of you a few weeks back. Completely unprofessional. If there was a 1/2 a star he would get that rating, he actually deserves NO STARS.

Mr Brown was hired by our family to represent a family member in a criminal matter. I am a criminal attorney myself with over 21 years of experience and I'm licensed to practice law in Maryland, DC, and Federal Court and I can say that Mr. Brown is by far 1 of the worst, rudest and unprofessional attorneys that I had ever come across. Although I was a witness in the case he refused to interview me. In fact ironically I received more assistance from the prosecutor who was prosecuting my family member. I was truly disappointed and if you are considering hiring this guy, consider this review and also look at other reviews on Yelp, I wish I could have given this guy negative stars, because one star is way too much h

Hands-down, the worst attorney that I’ve ever dealt with. Steven was assigned to me during a CPS case, he was consistently trying to get me to appeal the case just to pay him instead of him fighting in the court at the time. There were so many mistakes made in my case that I’ve had to spend upwards of $10,000 to correct Mr. Debye’s errors. Additionally, I found mistakes that even a rookie attorney should’ve found and when I did ask for his assistance, he offered to help for $1200 not until I continue to go to the court did he attempt to help! I would not recommend Stephen free or retained. He is more of a headache than he'll help. He has a horrible attitude and does not respect his clients. We had to wait hours for Stephen to let the delivery guy in for his new TV, the entire court, waiting for him. After consulting other lawyers I learned he has reputation for this behavior.

The only thing he did was take my money. Years after the case I’m getting contacted by him because he screwed something up and now may have to go back into court to finish up what he screwed up in the first place including losing my case. This guy is a joke. Don’t waste your money. If you hire him that’s what’ll happen. Positive reviews I don’t believe and are probably fake.

We hired Scott for a custody battle. We were going through an emotional time in are youthful ignorance. Every day of court Scott would tell the Judge that we would need to confer with the other party and then disappear to another case, charging us 8 hours for the day as well as charging the members of the other case he was working with. Looking through the paperwork, it stated in the fine print that this was a possibility but 6 times was rediculous. He charged over $20 for emails and short phone calls, not only to him but his office assistant. He charged a quite a bit of money for the time it took to type a billing statement for what we owed. He did not sit with us and prepare us for court and all the evidence against our opposition, we had to come up with. We lost our case and owed Scott $12000. That is alot of money, especially for junior enlisted military.

Became my court appointed lawyer back in 2022. He refused to be proactive on my behalf once the spark was light to battle my child support case. He is too busy kissing the court's butt than looking out for his clients. I called him for the last time and told him that he was fired.... do you know he called me back immediately, cursing me out, power tripping, the whole nine! I could never get ahold of him on the phone until it was at his convenience.... once. 2 years later, 2024 I go back to court and once he hears my ex wife's accusations, (no evidence to prove her claim, which was cleared in a different court) he commences to call me a criminal and did not want to hear anything that I had to say to him. There needs to be a watchdog organization on lawyers... I'm sure he would be at the top of the list. I will never have someone work for me that against me from jump. I respect all professionals on every level, but this guy, he does not deserve any stars.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
