I had the pleasure of working with Dustin McMahon, one of the newer attorneys of this law firm. He was very professional and helped me sort out my ticket immediately. He gave me the assurance that it would be handled with utmost priority as well as gave me periodic updates regarding the issue. I will definitely be working with Dustin and this firm again!

Dustin assisted me with a traffic violation and I have nothing but great things to say about him. His knowledge of the situation and explanation of the process each step of the way were reassuring. He was positive during each interaction and was professional. He handled everything quickly and efficiently and I am thankful for that as well. I would highly recommend him for any of your legal needs.

I knew John for more than 5 years by now. He is a great lawyer. My case went from a simple custody case to complicated divorce and relocation case. He was always well prepared and knew how to hand the case. The most thing I liked in dealing with him was being able to predict the court outcomes. He made a road map plan that we followed, and it worked well for us. He knew the plan that my ex-wife's attorney had which made me well prepared to the court. I believe he knew my ex-wife personality better than I did. Eventually he got me 90% of what he said he would try to get " he never made promises to get me anything, which scared me at first, but now I know he was very honest with all his words". thank you John for the great job

It's been a few years since we worked with Bob & I realized I never reviewed him! Bob helped me adopt my stepson. We successfully terminated his biological mom's rights & completed the adoption. This is very hard to do & required a skilled family lawyer. The case was contested & took some time, but Bob was very experienced & handled everything. He was very thorough & responsive. Thank you Bob, for helping us get to the rainbow on the other side! - The Hall Family

He has been my fathers lawyer for a long time. And when I needed a lawyer my father sent me to him. He helped me with a lawsuit against me from my former school. He saved me from having to pay alot of money! I would highly recommend him he is an aggressive lawyer that works very hard for his clients. I have since recommended him to 3 people and also found out he has represented a few of my friends and they all got better results then their co deffendents.

Mr. Buting walked my family and I through the legal process in a caring compassionate manner, he took the time to explain each step and the potential outcomes. Mr. Buting’s knowledge of the law, and the intricacies legal systems proved to be invaluable in the final resolution of my case. Mr. Buting was indeed with my family and me every step of the way and I feel confident that he will perform in an equally superior manner in representing your case.

Mr Buting has been worked diligently on all of our cases all the way thru the process with superb results in all cases. He pays particular attention to details and stays one step ahead of prosecutors by knowing what cards to show and when to say NO. Mr Buting was superior to lawyers we had used in past cases. Mr Buting covered areas on our cases which in the past other lawyers had little experiance how to research and lay out defenses . I would highly recommed Mr Buting if you have a complex case needing a intelligent caring lawyer.

I am extremely pleased with Attorney Grieve after my case. I retained his firm to represent me on a serious matter. He was able to answer all of my questions and took the time to understand the issues and nuances of the case. Through his aggressive representation we accomplished far more than I had thought possible. I would recommend him and Grieve Law to anyone who is in need of an accomplished criminal and DUI attorney!

I was recently involved in relatively serious traffic violation. As a result I had police knocking at my door multiple times and were calling very frequently. My family and I were very anxious as the potential outcome could have been disastrous for my family. I called Tom Grieve and he immediately calmed me down by fully explaining the situation I was in and took control immediately. He called the police and as a result they backed down right away. I work 3rd shift and was worried about being able to be in contact with him when I needed to be, but Tom worked around my schedule as if he shared my hours. He was always available and always returned my calls in a timely matter. Tom is a very busy attorney and I probably called much more often than was necessary but he never acted annoyed or rushed. With his help he walked me through everything that was in my best interest and I followed his instructions. As a result, in the end his hard work exonerated me from the charges that were leveled against me. I know that I couldn't have been his priority case but he acted as if I was. Each and every time i reached out to him he took the time to answer all of my questions. He even contacted my wife who wasn't even his client when she had questions about the case. I cannot recommend him strongly enough. I have worked with a few attorneys in the past and have been let down every time and Tom has renewed my faith in them. He went above and beyond what I expected from him. Hopefully I will not be in need of an attorney again to help me out of legal trouble, but if I do his is the only name I'll be calling.

Couldn't have been a better experience. I had contacted two other attorneys before hiring Mr. Kershek. The first flat out told me he/she couldn't accomplish what I was looking for and so didn't want to take the case on. The second reminded me multiple times that I was taking a huge risk by spending money on him/her because it was not likely that anything would change. I called Mr. Kershek the night before I had court. He not only took the case on at the last minute without hesitation, but he displayed the confidence, fervor, and hope that I needed to feel secure in my decision to move forward with an attorney. He went to bat for me and ultimately accomplished what I was looking for. His rates were better than the other attorneys I had contacted as well! I will be forever grateful.

Avoid this firm at all costs. Madeline C. Bitto is the most inadequate attorney I have ever encountered. She failed to review my case or provide a proper defense, which directly resulted in my loss of school choice, primary placement and decision-making authority for my children. Her unprofessional conduct during my hearing included playing with her hair and wedding ring while drinking Starbucks, and she was clearly unprepared. Madeline C. Bitto even asked me for guidance on what to do before the hearing. To make matters worse, she abandoned my case just before the hearing during the week of Thanksgiving, recognizing her own incompetence. Additionally, this unethical firm did not refund my money. Please invest in qualified legal representation and avoid this firm, which operates with the same disregard as the discount retailer, Walmart.

I paid them approximately $5,000 and they didn’t do anything for me. They showed up to two zoom court dates that took about 30 minutes in total. They assigned me an attorney wi was straight out of college, then quit. So then I got assigned another attorney who again appeared to be right out of law school. But I figured she had a great staff around her and that I’d still be in good hand’s, but was I wrong! It seemed to me that they just wanted it to go trial so their part of the contract was fulfilled and they could suck more money out of me. They never even tried one time to contact my ex to work out a deal in order to avoid trial. I think I figured it out and they probably spent five hours on my case all together and that is very generous on my part because it was only probably about two hours, expert I gave them another three as the paralegal probably entered my financials in their system, which was never even filed with the court. Then they asked me for more money and just didn’t sure to for ac court date; I found it from the judge that I was no longer getting represented by the firm. So I cashed the firm and wanted the main last who would be the one to issue out refunds give me a call, which never happened. They however had the attorney call me av couple times but I had told them I didn’t want a call from her, only from the other lady. Go somewhere else because these people are what give matters ac bad rap. They charge a flat rate which they make it seem like it will be in your favor and maybe some of these attorneys are great but I didn’t have that experience. I just know I wouldn’t risk it

HONEST REVIEW-2 years ago, I went through the scariest time of my life. I was going through a divorce and had a very bad drinking problem. This led to my 3rd OWI. I didn’t hurt anyone, myself or get into any car accidents. I was less than 2 miles from my home. I pulled over and was immediately taken into custody. I was terrified. I don’t believe alcoholism is a choice, but I know that I broke the law. I of course, like many, wanted the best lawyer to represent me. I called around and mostly looked at the reviews online. I focused more on the lawyers with the best reviews and read the reviews that most related to my situation. Grieve Law had a 4.8 out of 5 star rating. I spoke with Tom Grieve and he was very informative and made me feel very comfortable. I asked if I could book with him as my lawyer, but he was unable to take on any more clients. He recommended Glenn Gaskill. He told me Glenn knew just as much as he did and was a very respected lawyer. He also had a good relationship with the DA in my county. After more questions, I decided to make the arrangements to book with Glenn. I received a discount if I paid all up front, so I reluctantly agreed to paying the $9,200 (after discount) to book with Glenn. I heard from Glenn fairly quickly, and was not worried in the beginning. It didn’t take long for me to realize what kind of lawyer Glenn was. It took days for him to respond to emails. Sometimes, it would take upwards a week. And when he did, he would respond with 1, maybe 2 sentence responses. It almost seemed as if he was responding to me from his cell phone because of the shortness with most of his responses. When I would try to call him, at any point, he was never available. The receptionist that would answer the phone was also very rude and short with me. When I would ask when Glenn would be in, she never knew. During my case, my anxiety was super high. I have a family to take care of, a job, and many other responsibilities. I felt during my entire case, I was treated like a criminal. I felt that everyone treated me like a criminal, but my lawyer (and especially at $9,200) should have been the last person I should have gotten that treatment from. I gave Glenn many defenses that he could use in my case to help with the outcome, and I feel he ignored them all, saying it was relevant. Most of the time, I kept up to date on my case by going online (wcca website) because he didn’t communicate with me. There were many times I emailed him and told him how upset I was he wasn’t getting back to me. Glenn is not the type that has any emotions towards his clients. He is very monotone and didn’t care about me as a person at all. I understand being a lawyer can lead to this type of non-emotional response, but you should care about your clients at least a little. My 2nd OWI lawyer was a fraction of the cost and he was always keeping me updated on my case and showed a lot of emotiontowards me in person and in the courtroom. This led to me receiving a 12 day house arrest, 18 month license revocation and 6 months outpatient treatment. I would have contacted him again but was too embarrassed. As time went on and things didn’t get any better, I finally contacted Grieve Law and asked to speak with Glenn’s superior. The person I spoke with said they would speak with Glenn. Glenn contacted me shortly thereafter and we met in person. He said that he was confident in my case and reassured me he would be better at responding to me and making me feel more assured and up to date. Things did get better for a short time. I was given the option to switch lawyers but we were so close to the case concluding, I didn’t know what good it would do to start all over again. Plus, he reassured me things would get better. Long story short(er), my case concluded and all obligations have been fulfilled. I feel that for the amount charged, definitely not worth it.

My husband and I chose Attorney Landry to represent us because we saw his already existing 5 star reviews - and I am happy to add another one! He truly is an excellent attorney. He is completely non-judgmental; he simply wants to help you, no matter what situation you are in or how you got there. He is prompt with all information, but also relays it in just enough detail so you understand exactly what needs to be done and when. Throughout our process, not once did we feel nervous or uncertain how things would go, because Attorney Landry made sure to explain everything and guarantee he could deliver on what he said he would do or what would most likely happen. We could text or call him anytime with questions, and he always answered between his other consultations and hearings. His pricing is reasonable and is presented in such a way that you can be rest assured he does not charge hidden fees. Above all his professionalism, he is a down to earth guy that you can feel completely at ease with. I personally guarantee, if you need representation, you will be relieved and glad you chose Landry Law Offices!

I Absolute LOVE Block Legal Services. Mariah is very professional and sweet. My Attorney Nick DiUlio is wonderful. He was hired to handled two major issues for me, and I will continue to be a client of this Law firm. The fees I was charged were fair, and the services I received were outstanding. I needed some repairs done on my home and needed to take out a loan. I was told that it wasn't going to happen until I went to probate court. Esq Nick DiUlio advised me that I did not need probate court, alI I needed was a simple form it took 24 hours and it was done. When the company I presented the form to rejected it. Nick jumped right in and advise the company he disagreed with their assessment and educated them on the law. It was beautiful to watch. He did not play any games with this company.

Ryan Shope was absolutely amazing. She took time to answer every question. She was patient when I needed time to get things together. She has a very calming presence during a very hectic process. Her paralegal Danielle was also just wonderful. Always quick to respond and very helpful. Knowing exacting how much it would cost helped immensely!

Michael from Cornerstone Law helped me when I needed it most. I’m fortunate to have found him as I was caught in a crisis – a real estate transaction gone bad that threatened my home. Michael listened and laid out some options. His advice didn’t give false hope, but he put together a strategy we could confidently follow. And it worked! I couldn’t be more grateful.

Our family engaged Cornerstone Law in 2022 to assist with finalizing our sister's estate, a task that should have been straightforward but turned out to be a frustrating and disappointing experience. We had high hopes when we initially met with Michael Kilkenny, one of the partners at the firm, in September 2022. However, our experience with Cornerstone Law did not live up to our expectations. We provided Mr. Kilkenny with all the necessary documentation, including the death certificate and extensive communication records with insurance and retirement companies. Michael assured us that his involvement and the firm's formal letter would expedite the process. Unfortunately, our experience with Cornerstone Law was marred by unfulfilled promises and a lack of proactive communication. One of the primary issues we encountered was Michael's failure to deliver on the promises outlined in our contract. He indicated that a letter from the law firm would facilitate faster progress, but this promise remained unfulfilled throughout the entire process. Our family had to take the initiative to constantly reach out to the law firm for updates and even had to nudge them to follow up with the various companies responsible for issuing checks to the beneficiaries. This was not the level of service we expected when we engaged Cornerstone Law. Additionally, Michael claimed to have put in extra hours beyond what he was paid for. However, when we requested copies of the communications he had with the various companies, he failed to provide any documentation to substantiate this claim. This lack of transparency left us feeling even more frustrated and distrustful of the firm's handling of our sister's estate. In the end, it was the constant work and communication of the sisters that helped resolve our deceased sister’s estate. In summary, our experience with Cornerstone Law was far from satisfactory. We had hoped that their expertise and commitment to their clients would ease the burden of finalizing our sister's estate during a difficult time. Regrettably, we were left disappointed by their unmet promises and lack of effective communication. We hope that sharing our experience in this review will help others make informed decisions when choosing legal representation. We intend to submit this review to the Better Business Bureau to ensure that our concerns are heard and that potential clients are aware of our disappointing experience with Cornerstone Law.

Amy was proactive, good attention to detail, patient with all of my questions, and brought multiple strategic approaches for us to review and decide on for my case. It was a very scary time to someone bringing very extreme and inaccurate accusations against me, but Amy did not back down, and professionally and intelligently delivered end results. All charges were dropped.

Amy did not look through or care about the details of the case. She is an attorney that only wants to do quick and easy pleas. I had to request the tapes and exhibits myself to do the research. After doing the research for her, she told me that the information could not be used as a defense and used in court. This was not true. I hired a different lawyer and found that I was provided with false information. Amy just wanted to take a plea and did not want to put the work into it. She was not familiar with some of the defenses that could have been used. I could have saved myself a lot of money, time, and heart ache, if I had gone to my other lawyer first.

Cleghorn's lies start in her add 1. Free consultation, she billed me for it, 2. Accepts easy payments via credit card, but demands cash and will hinder your case until she counts out the cash. She ignores all calls, does not take initiative and is not a lawyer you want to hand your life over to. I fired her and in retaliation she gouged be for $3000.00 billing be $300.00 an hour just on drive time to Waukesha Court, she never filed a single motion nor made a single call to me or anyone else. I currently have an active complaint against her with the Office of Lawyer Regulations and I am preparing a legal mal-practice suit because I sat in jail for 4 days because she failed to advise me of a court time, I had mixed up and I only live 5 minutes from court. Do not hire this woman, go with a public defender, same performance without the gouging legal bill.

I hired Kerri as my attorney pertaining to my son and his visitation with his father. I had previously worked in the courts and when chosing my attorney I thought about who I least liked being opposed to. Kerri was that person. I hated being opposite her, not because she was bad, but the exact opposite. Kerri knows law. She fights for people. She is good at her job. She also did a great job of helping me look at things through the eyes of a court, not just the eyes of an emotional mom.....so that we could make rational and productive points. While I hope to never need her services again, I would retain again hands down, if needed.

Kay and Kay Law Firm was hired to represent me in a small claims case. Then Kay and Kay Law firm took action to convert this case to a large claims case without the knowlege or consent of the cliemt. This exposed the client to almost twice the amount of damages. This resulted in a significant amount of billable hours for work he WAS NOT hired to do. After several months of not receiving any billing documents, Kay and Kay sends one in the thousands of dollars. I then send a certified letter requesting that I be allowed to pay $500.00 a month, until my property got refinanced, requesteing that he inform me if it was not acceptable. He DID NOT object to proposed payment plan while accepting several payments. Despite these facts, attorney, Timothy T. Kay, then filed a motion stating I was refusing to pay. All these facts are supported by court documents. Again, watch out for this one.

Possibly the worst lawyer in south east Wisconsin. I hired him years ago to fight a misdemeanor case, not only did he want me to plead guilty to a FELONY it took two years to get to that point at court. Hired a new lawyer that actually knew what he was doing, case resolved within a year, no felony. The only people that say they are happy with Timothy kays work have never had a different lawyer. Got charged more than I could afford for taking two steps backwards. Tim Kay ruined my life, do not let him ruin yours.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
