Jim kept me abreast of everything I need to know in a timely fashion. He calmed my nerves but was transparent and honest. Jim genuinely cared about my welfare, my family, the outcome, and my future well-being. I could not have gotten through this situation without his support, expertise, and care.

Jim was the attorney that helped my son when he got himself into a bit of trouble. He did a great job, made me feel as a mother I had nothing to worry about. He represented my son in the most honorable way. Very professional, and right up front with Joe. I think if Joe would not had Jim as his attorney I would have definitely not felt like my son was in good hands. To this day I can call him with a question and he has no problem helping me out. I believe he really enjoys what he does, if he didn’t he would not be so good and professional with his clients. I was then and still very impressed with his ability to make his clients feel at ease. I would recommend him to anyone who needed his services. A very great man/attorney.

James was referred to me by a close friend and I couldn't be happier that he did. I was very scared about my situation and was filled with guilt before I even spoke to James. After my first consultation with James it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders knowing I was putting my case in his hands. He was polite and genuinely so easy to talk too. I was nervous I was going to talk to someone and they would make me feel even worse about my mistakes but he never once did that. He acknowledged I made a mistake and I will be able to move forward and put this behind me. He was comforting but also professional. He was able to make my case as short as I believe it could be for my situation and I couldn't be more grateful I found him. If anyone is hesitant about finding an attorney who truly cares about helping you the best they can I suggest James Metz as he was great in helping me.

After losing my case with 2 different lawyers, I can confidently say that Jules Fiani is by far the best. I hired him to represent me in my license restoration case. His attention to detail and thoroughness was unmatched. Not a single detail fell through the cracks and I was fully prepared and confident on hearing day. His hard work won my case! The flat rate payment allowed for open communication whenever I had questions without the worry of extra fees. If you’re considering hiring Jules, don’t think twice about it. 10/10 recommend.

An attorney friend ours referred us to Mark Gatesman because of his membership in the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorney’s. We hired Mark to help us with our son, a minor, who foolishly got into trouble. Mark assured us he could resolve the matter without our son having a criminal record. In a time of anxiety and uncertainty, Mark was able to answer all our questions. In Court Mark was able to get the case completely dismissed. Now my son doesn’t have a criminal record due to a one-time lapse in judgment. Mark Gatesman’s representation demonstrated compassion knowledge and experience in Juvenile Law. I would definitely recommend Mark.

My in-laws, who lived in Florida died, passed away suddenly. We were aware that Mark Gatesman was licensed to practice in the State of Florida, so we hired him to assist us with the Florida Probate. Mark answered all our questions about the Florida estate process and helped us fairly divide the estate within the family. It was comforting and wonderful having a knowledgeable local attorney who was able to handle our out of state Florida Probate issues efficiently and in a very timely manner.

Mark Gatesman represented me when I was sued in a professional capacity as a Realtor, a potential buyer was injured during a showing. Mark was able to explain the entire litigation process to me, which helped with the fear and anxitety that comes with being sued. Mark assured me that he would resolve the lawsuit to my satisfaction. Mark filed a motion requesting the Judge dismiss the lawsuit. In Court, Mark argued hard for me and was able to peruade the Judge to dismiss the lawsuit. Mark Gateman was able to get a lawsuit dismissed that never should have been filed against me in the first place. Thanks, Lesa

I hired Tim to help me with a driving on a suspended license charge. I was nervous that I would be charged and lose my license and be put on probation but after talking with Tim I knew I was in good hands. The day of my pretrial he called me and told me he talked to the prosecutor already and felt that we had a good chance at making a deal in my favor and to take my time getting there. Once I got to the court he greeted me and as we walked through the court house everyone we walked past he knew and was social with everyone there. I felt relieved that he was so well known and was cool with everyone there including the prosecutor. After about 10 minutes of him talking to the prosecutor he came out and told me the good news that my charges were lessened and that I would not be put on probation or lose my license, all of which he told me from the beginning was his plan. He was professional and personable and I am grateful I hired him.

I’ve been working with Ashley for over a year now, on a very complicated case. She is knowledgeable, passionate, and creative. She knows her way around the family court system, and her demeanor makes me feel very secure. She’s direct, supportive, and clear in her communications with me. I’ve worked with other attorneys in the past, but Ashley is everything that I’ve ever needed and wanted in an attorney. She truly cares about my case, and the needs of my family. I would strongly recommend her to anyone seeking legal assistance. Family court is a difficult system to navigate, and it’s easily overwhelming. Without Ashley’s assistance, I don’t know what I would do. I’m truly thankful for her, and I believe she is gifted in her field.

I hired Carolyn Henry to represent me in a Felony Assault on a police officer case. I live in Livingston County Michigan and the courts are VERY tough here so a great, aggressive, knowledgeable, lawyer is a must when your facing serious charges. My case was way out of control from the beginning, I was over charged by the procicuiter with a 4th Habitual offender so the penalty could have been very hard. Carolyn worked her magic, and was willing to go to trial if she couldn't get a reduced charge. I was totally ok with taking a disorderly conduct charge, because that's all I truly did. To make a long story short, Carolyn got the charges reduced to disorderly and the 4th Habitual dropped as well. My sentence was just $150.00 fine and no probatio, no jail. It was a great outcome and I am completely satisfied with her representation. If you want a no nonsense lawyer, that is familiar with the way Livingston County does business I'd highly recommend her.

Marcus just handled a case my wife and I had, and everything worked perfectly. He is an excellent communicator, keeps you in the loop and informed, and knows his stuff. We were in uncharted waters with the legal system (and to be honest, the system, unfortunately, takes full advantage of uninformed people and takes its time as well), and Marcus was the guy we were fortunate enough to have at the Helm! He prevented a trial and settled our case. If you were searching for a great attorney in the area, you found one!

He was an excellent attorney and held my hand through the whole legal process. I would highly recommend working with him, particularly if you're new or anxious about court/government-related things. He got me a great outcome that saved me a lot of wasted time and money and he knows all of the Livingston county courts and officials well and won't give you ridiculous promises he knows are completely unrealistic. No matter how much you beg, trust me. He will be realistic with you and set realistic expectations and is quite direct and easy to talk to. He's a great guy to have on your side. Definitely give him a call for legal services; I did and I'm quite pleased with that decision. Literally saved me thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours. Marcus, thank you so much for all of your hard work and your patience with me. You were very kind to me during some of the hardest times of my life and it was always sincerely appreciated, if not necessarily communicated effectively.

She explained everything well in our initial phone conversation, was clear about her fee agreement and was quick to respond to any concerns that I had. Despite last-minute scheduling changes, Attorney Favio was well-prepared for the case. While he gave some good advice, I didn't feel that he thoroughly listened to my concerns. He was twenty minutes late to my appointment, his office was in desperate need of a cleaning, his secretary was wearing a shirt that bared her midriff, and he waltzed in wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants. His secretary made small talk with me about how she manages a bar in the evenings while we waited for him to return to his office. I sought his legal advice as I had been raped and abused in a previous relationship, and currently am incredibly concerned for my safety. Yet the entire time I spoke to him his eyes were on my chest. When I inquired about the process for a PPO, he told me to get a gun, lean in if my ex ever came near me so I could show police bruises, and just move on with my life because I have no reason to be in contact with him. (Exactly! That's why I need help from the law to tell him that!) Needless to say I will be seeking further counsel from other attorneys.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
