Tracy guided me through the legal process regarding challenges I faced as Guardian/Conservator of my brother who has dementia and was a victim of elder abuse. Her experience as District Attorney for the Clayton Judicial Circuit contributes to her excellent knowledge and expertise in the law. Tracy conveyed a sense of calm and confidence in the midst of challenges I faced in the legal process to help my brother. I have the highest respect for her legal expertise and integrity.

Vernon Smith did not help my son at all with his aggavated assault and battery case. Perpetrator tried to climb through my son's window threatening him, and then eventually opened and tried to come through the front door. My son stopped the perpetrator at the door and stabbed him with a knife. I guess Georgia doesn't have any self defense laws. The bias and unfair Aaron Mason gave my son 20 years with only one misdemeanor on his record. Our friends and family in California just knew it was a white judge that sentenced him t 20 years. I told them no - it was a black judge which are worst than the white ones. They are brainwashed to lock up all their own people. I found out after the fact that Mason sentenced my son to 20 years because the prosecutor Tasha Mosley was getting all her information from the perpetrator's mother (whos envy and jealousy of me got her other son killed). I did not know the court system goes by hearsay saying it was over money. It had nothing to do with money. I wonder what Mason kept going back there telling the jury. He wanted my son to be found guilty before the trial even started. Mason and Mosley will be judged by the real great Judge one day. If someone tried to break into their homes with little children present I wondered what they would have done? I see now it is not about being guilty or innocent. It's about which attorney has the best acting skills. My son is so sweet that he said he forgives the perpetrator's mother, and Mason. He has had nothing but good behavior while in that hell hole that they call prison!

Attorney Smith is a great lawyer and a good person and he knows the law! When my son got in trouble I called around for help with his case. One lawyer told me that he didn't like working with schizophrenic clients. My heart was already broken and his words hurt even more. I got in-touch with Attorney Smith. He offered me honest hope and met with me to discuss my son's case. His fee was quoted fairly and I appreciate that. He did a wonderful job working with the prosecutors office--which is not easy to do in Clayton County. He treated my son with honesty, sensitivity and respect. He kept me informed and returned my text and phone calls as soon as he could. He fought to get my son the best possible outcome, the help that he needs and to keep him out of prison. God worked a miracle through this man and I am grateful!!

It’s been 2 years and my case still isn’t settled and still hasn’t gone through litigation review. My case has been through several different case managers. Most of which have gone months without speaking to me or giving any type of updates unless I call and ask. My case was said to have been in litigation since January but now I find out that not only do I have another case manager but that my case hasn’t even gone through review with the attorney. My case will reach the statute of limitations this December. This is my first experience with an accident lawyer and it has been the worse experience in my life.

Lawyer displays a clear and un-American affection for the traitorous Confederate states, having their flag in his office. Additionally, his highest profile case so far has been the defense of a white woman who shot and killed an unarmed black man after chasing him with her car following being asked simply to obtain his license plate. This trial resulted in a conviction. Through both the personal views he clearly holds proudly and the failure to assist his client it is apparent that this is not the lawyer you want to rely upon.

Unprofessional, unprepared, asks witnesses the same question over and over again to the point that it gets extremely annoying and he did it to a few witnesses. I ought to report this joke to Georgia Bar Association, I was served on June 3 2019 to appear in court for a TPO hearing on June 12, 2019 so i needed a lawyer within 9 days if not i wouldn’t have hired this joke. After losing my TPO hearing i was served with a divorce papers so i retained him that was one of my very worst decisions ever!! I was giving a bi-weekend visitations, the first visitation was for Father’s Day and she didn’t bring my kids,Mr Todd told me to file a motion for contempt,he charged me $1000 for that,I thought it was a good suggestion until we got to court, this man was sleeping and snoring in the court,I have to wake him up twice in the court, the people were laughing in the court, that was when i first realized that i made a big mistake, after the hearing Mr Todd lost the case woefully and i was ordered to pay $2,400 attorney fee for the defense. He told me that before my divorce comes up we would need 3 weeks to get everything together,he didn’t request for any discovery, he didn’t ask for anything from my ex wife but sending me their own discovery requests. On January 23,2020 i received a call from Jillian advising me of my upcoming divorce on the 28th of January 2020, I was shocked i told her i thought you guys would prepare me ahead she gave me some bogus excuses so i implored her to see how she can make an excuse to the court and get another court day, I didn’t know that the opposing counsel had taken a leave of absence for that day so when i found out that the case had been rescheduled i took my time to find a REAL lawyer and fired the joke! I hired Bardley McKnight law firm and my case has taken a better form ever since, this man never cared about the safety of my kids he just wanted to turn me to his ATM and mess up my case and kids life, don’t judge him by my review go and see some other people’s reviews on google,he is by far the very worst!!!

I lost both of my parents within three months of each other. First I was using our family attorney that we had used for decades but he was taking advantage of me. In my darkest of days he took advantage of me. He was taking advantage of my good nature. I said to myself, “This isn’t normal.” Who do we use now? My brother went online and talked to Joyce – she works for Mr. Todd. There was something about her that clicked and my brother told me that I must call and talk to Joyce. I used to be a police officer and I quit my job so I could take care of my parents. Everything was so confusing with the will and probate. I was terrified. Mr. Todd walked me through the entire process. He would not let me leave until he knew that I understood everything. Mr. Todd was personable, kind, and he took a personal interest in my case. He got the house transferred into my name. He never, ever once took advantage of me. He was very fair with me. This is how professional he is – Mr. Todd never once said an unkind word about the other attorney. He really is so kind. I immediately felt at ease with him. He introduced me to his daughter, Jillian, and she was great too. He was so kind to me – he always asked how I was doing. I was really upset when they passed. I was devastated. But Mr. Todd reminded me that it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. He spoke to me as a friend and not an attorney. This is an attorney who cares more about you that the bottom line. If it wasn’t for Joyce and her being so nice, I don’t know where I would even be right now. Everyone was so amazing.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
