Renee helped us with a couple of custody cases and an adoption. Everyone in her office was easy to work with and very responsive. Renee was referred to us by a number of friends and professionals. The only people I spoke to that did not like her were individuals that were on the opposing side of a case. Which is exactly what we needed. She is thorough, and having her on our side really made us feel much better about a difficult experience. Our case was complex but Renee was able to sift through the details, lay out our options, and help us get going in the right direction, ending with our desired result of the adoption of our son.

Renee represented me during a rough time in my life while I was attempting to obtain a restraining order. She took her time to get to know the details of my case prior to the court date and answered all of my questions. I never felt like I was rushed during our meetings or that I had to re-explain myself. She just "got it". Her staff was also helpful and organized with their paperwork/email communication. As someone who has never gone to court for anything before, my anxiety about the entire process was high. However, when Renee met me at the courthouse, my anxiety diminished. With her assistance prior to court, I felt prepared. And, more importantly, she was fully present and ready to handle my case. You can tell in court that Renee has extensive experience and there's no substitution for someone who has seen it all! I was impressed with her quick thinking, ability to analyze on the spot and react with intent to represent her client to the fullest extent of the law. If you are looking for solid representation with an experienced attorney who will take her time and make you feel more at ease, I would highly recommend Attorney Mura.

Mr. Marry was vigorously recommended to me, with absolute promise of his success, were he to handle my DV case. Facing felony charges and the ruin of my foreseeable future, I went to Phil an absolute wreck. I was shocked at how calm, composed, and collected he remained, and at how hopeful he was for my situation. His secretary, Mrs. Jen, was just as wonderfully reassuring, and confident in his abilities. Phil worked with me financially, explained every step of the process, and ensured that I was aware of every possible outcome of my dire circumstances. He facilitated the passing of information to all parties involved, and I believe it was this aspect of his multifaceted professionalism, that granted me an Ordinance, rather than a Felony charge. Thanks to Phil Marry, I am able to spend time with my wife and better myself at home. I cannot possibly express my thanks and recommendation sufficiently enough.

Jacqueline was amazing. She was very professional, she took the time to research the case and get familiar with the past orders on our case. She came to court on time and was completely prepared for each and every hearing. She went above and beyond to send info to the GAL and the social worker that helped tremendously. She was professional, but fought hard for me to keep what has been in place and working for my children for the last 10 years.

In 2017 I hired Jacqueline as my divorce attorney. Jacqueline was the 2nd divorce attorney I hired. Shortly into the divorce process I realized my divorce was going to be complicated and messy. I needed a lawyer that was going to "fight" for my best interests and not back down. I remember meeting Jacqueline for the first time and leaving her office thinking she was going to be my "Olivia Pope". Through the process, Jacqueline provided support, guidance and honesty. Jacqueline carried herself with the upmost ethical standards. Jacqueline displayed a strong commitment to successfully settling my case. During every visit with Jacqueline she actively displayed a high degree of honesty, loyalty and integrity. I would highly recommend Jacqueline to anyone looking for a lawyer that is a fighter. Thank you Jacqueline for everything you did for me and my kids.

I had a very tuff case! I needed the very best Attorney Kenosha had to offer! As I searched the name John Caviale kept coming up. So after 3 meetings with high profile attorneys!! I just didn't feel confident, I had one more appointment set up with attorney John Caviale. From the moment I entered J.Caviales office I felt comfortable, I was treated with the utmost respect! Mr. Caviale not only gave me an hour & 1/2 of his time, he was very helpful in making sure I understood the charges I was facing! @ no point did J. Caviale try to pressure me into retaining him ASAP. All 3 earlier meetings that was the 2nd thing said after hello. Needless to say I hired John Caviale that day! As I stated earlier I had a very tuff case I was facing many years in jail & John never miss lead me or sugar coated the severity! However he worked a lot on my case always putting 110% into it. He fought my case for over 2 years, Filing several motions etc. He not only represented me in the court room, John Caviale helped me find the help I so badly needed & made sure I completed all the program's I needed. John Caviale went way over & above his call of duty. I would have to say that is what separates John Caviale from any other attorney I've seen. In closing when you hire John Caviale your not just hiring an attorney, you are hiring a caring highly intelligent very persistent well respected no nonsense attorney! I recommend John Caviale to many satisfied clients to this day!

Dana was very confident in navigating a collaborative divorce. She worked well with the opposing lawyer on my behalf to speed the process, at all times keeping our original goal in mind: make the kids well-being 1st priority. When it got to sticky discussions, Dana was the one to bring all parties back to the table to push forward and accomplish what needed to be done. I appreciated her ability to "hear" me, validate my position and then help me to have realistic expectations. I cannot imagine such a thing as a great divorce, but Dana's expertise and grounded approach gave me peace of mind that this would be DONE as well as possible within the parameters that were out of my control.

I would very highly recommend attorney Christopher Rose to anyone in need of legal services. I hired him to represent my son when he was facing a few very serious felonies. My son admittedly denied he wasn't guilty and after meeting with two other attorneys that told my son to take a plea deal, Attorney Rose listened to the whole case and hired an investigator to PROVE my son was innocent. The evidence didn't lie and thanks to him my son is back home with his family. Attorney Christopher Rose is viewed as one of the most respected attorney in Kenosha. The judges said in the Kenosha News "he is the only attorney in Kenosha capable of taking on the big cases. This is why he was given the Mark Jensen defence case"

I contacted almost every attorney who can defend against temporary restraining orders in kenosha county. Most wanted $3000-$5000 retainers for these cases. Being a woman living alone working two jobs and putting myself through school that just wasn’t feasible. I contacted mary and she was the first attorney to make me feel confident that they could fight this. Mary’s consultation was very very in depth and she made sure to touch on all points such as facts of the case strategy and what you should appear to court in clothes wise. Mary also ensured to call me a day before the hearing to once again go over information. Going into court with mary i felt confident with my case and that she could defend me. Mary was able to defend me and get the case closed and TRO vacated within a very short time in court. I didn’t even have to answer questions in court. Mary defended me and was very honest about what the outcomes could be. I would recommend her to anyone in need of legal services that she provides. She’s not out here charging thousands for something that could be one hearing and closed. Thank you so much Mary you are truly amazing. Prayers we never have to meet again in a good way!

She was a GAL for my CHIPS case…. Didn’t know hardly anything about the kids. Just what she was told by the state… I think she wants to retire. She doesn’t seem to really look at the facts and deep into chips cases at least to get down to the nitty gritty of the situation at hand… if you have a chips case and she is the GAL be prepared for her to push for your children to be removed from your home, for your rights to be terminated.. she also has personal relationships with foster families and was very close with the foster family my child was placed with. That alone was a huge conflict of interest… but foster family wanted to adopt from day one. Mary as I said was extremly close with the foster family in my situation. So no matter what was said in court, proved in court, so many lies were told… Mary I believe goes with the states suggestion no matter what. And in my case she did just that and was also good friends with foster family!!! She and the state were emailing each other back and fourth during court… almost like high school girls passing notes. Making sure they had their story straight and arguments made sense and everyone was on the same page… she knew absolutely zero about my children nor me. But if she is you’re GAL for a chips case I’d see if you can get a different one. She needs to retire already!!!

I hired Mr. Parise after I was beaten by Racine PD during a traffic accident. My expectations were very high as I considered him one of the best attorneys in Wisconsin. He did minimal work in my case and charged me higher than other attorney fees. I had pictures and a statement reporting the officers, and Mr. Parise put them back in a folder and said he would look at them later and see what he could do. My case concluded with an unreasonable outcome and I was given close to the max for my case. I didn't hurt myself or anyone, was still considered a misdemeanor and there was no reason for the way I was treated by Racine PD. Completely share the same experience by other reviews that he "shattered my expectations". Never expected this you're of representation from him!

Attorney Terry Rose represented me in a business litigation case. The other party hired a large Milwaukee firm that showed little respect for our Kenosha County Courts and attorneys. In 2014 I was arrested in racine for disorderly conduct or criminal damage to property or domestic abuse or fighting . I'm not sure cause it has changed depending on the situation. This after a mysterious phone call by a still unknown person that probably just was thrown out of my house for trying to plot against me for financial gain. See in 2014 I was the first geoge flyod I was assaulted in cuffs by 12 officers in racine County jail. Before even arriving to jail I didn't have any injury to my face shoulders back neck hips ...my shoes were on my feet not cut off. I was not being slammed on a wall ...lifted by my cuffed arms and legs facing down tearing both my shoulders and hips. A knee firmly planted in my neck while my legs were in the air and whn I gasped for air and struggled to breathe and told the officers I couldn't breathe ...the officer told me if I could talk I could breathe. After being offered water by a in house nurse, I was strapped to a chair and hooded much like you would see a pow after being captured and tortured. After several hours of agonizing pain I was carried limply to my cell where I remained unprocessed in due time as required by law for 3 days offered no medical assistance or a phone call. I was released on 300 dollars 4 days after the incident on what was supposedly disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. At this point I'm unsure of what is damaged because the only thing happening whn the police arrived is me throwing out already damage property THAT BELONGS TO ME. I look to find an attorney after being not only wrongfully arrested but assaulted after. I found him at Henry law office in Kenosha for 5000 plus. After what I would call the quickest 30 mins ever to determine ones fate. I ended up pleading no contest and being charged with disorderly conduct with a domestic enhancement. I was told that because my girlfriend at the time was there even though not a single thing happened other than being shocked and having the house illegal searched and and her cornered and questioned and her going to court after still being confused as to why I was even arrested. Still was enough for a domestic enhancement according to Wisconsin and only the fact that the police showed up at all was enough for disorderly conduct. And that the jury would be constantly reminded that despite the facts of the case this is the law. And tht I should take the plea deal that I'm being given even though I have never got to make a statement the fact I was assaulted by 12 officers means nothing even though it sounds like those officers felt they were judge jury and executioner. The fact the the only property damage that occurred was to my already broken wardrobe and to property owned by me and broken by racine county police. I was in record for all of less then 30 mins throughout the months of deliberation that never changed. He insisted that he worked for racine and it would be this way and easier than a trial...however swiftly added that I should try to have it pardoned in the future because it is such a weak case. Personally racine da office called in a favor on him .....and did I mention no charges on me or the police for their action ...huh...not even mentioned one time in court either. Only a single sentence in the report indicating any action at all occupied between me and 13 officers that night. I have permanent damage from the night of Jan 18 2014. 2 torn shoulders 2 torn hips neck damage back damage face damage night terrors every night. Since thn I have had 2 disc's in my back fixed and one of 2 hips fixed and the fixed one is not doing well the police stretched out both Achilles one tore already the other could at any time. He did nothing but side with racine county and their lies and brutality towards me..he never assured me justice at all and it ultimately allowed for me to be assaulted again Nov 14 2017 ...by just as many officers in my garage under my truck .....no charges filed

Denis Hertz-McGrath takes State Public Defender cases like mine because no one will hire her privately, and for good reason...she is a terrible attorney. I was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Battery. I was laid off from my construction job and needed a Public Defender. The Public Defender gave my case to Denise Hertz-McGrath. This attorney did absolutely nothing on my case. She never spoke to a witness. She met with me once for 12 minutes, after calling her office over 6 times without even the courtesy of a return call from her. During this 12 minute meeting we had it seemed her only goal was to get me to hire her privately, though the State was paying her the "State rate", which she stated wasn't enough for her to really dedicate the resources I needed. I think it all boiled down to a greedy attorney trying to take my money after getting the Public Defenders money for taking my case. In court she actually was talking about the wrong case and had to be stopped by the Judge. I ended up doing county jail time because she upset and argued with the DA. If Denise Hertz-McGrath was the last Attorney in Wisconsin, I'd suggest you represent yourself.

McGrath is one among very few Kenosha attorneys that invests herself 110% for your criminal case. She pulls no punches; our experience was that she represented us as if we were her own family. She does not hesitate to challenge or clarify the judge's statements and/or rulings when necessary (and we found it to definitely be necessary). She is one intelligent, matter-of-fact attorney worthy of her retainer fee !!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
