It was a breeze working with Imani Law! I am forming my LLC and gathered all information online but still wasn't able to start right away since I work at nights and by morning I'm deadbeat. Lucky me I found them online and we go through the process and they took care of everything! within a matter of days I'm officially a business owner. Definitely recommend them for business especially for starting up. Professionalism, customer service at its best!

I have retained and recommended Barry Simons for myself and others on several occasions recently. He is tops in his field. He is very experienced in what works and what doesn’t. He did not apply some one-size-fits all approach that did not apply to my situation and back fired. Rather he and his team worked with me to find out what will be the best approach. He tailored my defense to fit the circumstances, people, and issues. Barry is well respected in the legal community and his word went a long way in influencing the outcome my case for the better. He emphasized the positive aspects to be had in treating my case with justice and respect with a goal of rehabilitation rather than punishment. Barry and his team know their way around the DMV as well and advised me to avoid a hearing due to priors in my past. He has some of the best paralegal and assistant attorneys. Together they functioned as a well coordinated team and kept my case on track. They were always available to brief me on what is going on and answer any questions I might have in a considerate and professional manner. I highly recommend Barry Simons for the best outcome in your case as well.

My experience with the Law Offices of Barry T Simons was truly amazing. About a year ago I was charged with 2 felonies of Dui with great bodily Injury and a hit and run. After bailing myself out from jail the following day, I thought my life was over. I was filled with despair and discouragement. After doing much research in criminal attorneys and attending countless consultation meetings, I came across SuperLawyers.com. It was there where I found Barry and requested a consultation meeting via website. I got a call the same evening from Barry asking me to come in the following day. After meeting him and talking much about my case, I hired him. That was the best decision of my life. Barry has gone above and beyond in fighting for me throughout this case. He was always easy to get a hold of and always opened his office doors for me if needed. His paralegal, Arial, was also great with assisting me in what I needed. Barry even went to the extent of hiring me a separate personal Injury lawyer to assist me with working out a civil restitution agreement with the victim, because he felt it wasn't his circle of competence in that field and wanted me to get the best advice possible and told me to pay him back later in life, what kind of lawyer is that honest and kind?! He showed up to every court date and was punctual. Through Mr. Simons efforts, I went from facing four years federal prison to formal probation with 42 days of Home Confinement with the approval of going to work, school, and other court approved activities. I truly believe none of this would be possible without him by my side.To say I am eternally grateful for Barry T. Simons help would be an understatement. BEST LAWYER EVER!

Mr. Simons and his team were excellent in defending my case, especially given the complexities around my immigration status / work permit. They were knowledgeable, thorough and very professional, and made sure to keep me informed through every step of the process. In addition to Mr. Simons' excellent credentials, I was particularly grateful for his team's responsiveness, always quick to answer each and every question or concern I had no matter how trivial it may have seemed. I could not have asked for better representation during this stressful time, and was glad to have them on my side.

I retained Barry Simons from a referral from a neighbor. After going through a divorce and finding out how horrible and damaging a bad attorney can be, I made sure to interview 6 attorney's for my felony DUI case. After interviewing and meeting with 6 attorney's one being Barry, I realized through talking to them that my case was really bad and that I stand no chance to win my DMV hearing. The other attorney's basically said that going to the DMV hearing would be pointless and that 90% of them are a loss. Barry was the only attorney that pointed out some of the flaws in my case and said that their might be a chance that we can beat the DMV hearing and the refusal charge. I decided to retain Barry and his office for my case. After meeting with Barry and seeing how knowledgeable he is regarding DUI cases and how much work he put into my case I felt very comfortable that I hired the right attorney for the job. Him and I discussed how we should proceed with the DMV hearing and decided that it is best that I go with him and testify. When we left the DMV hearing I was blown away at how amazing of an attorney Barry really is. We received a letter in the mail about 10 days later stating that we WON the DMV hearing! I was in shock and elated. I have referred Barry to at least two other people dealing with similar situations. If I could give Barry 10 stars I would.

First I wanted to address the fact that Robert McMahon threatened me if I wrote a review about him - for disparagement. I assume that he does this with many, if not all, of his clients since he has zero online reviews, though he has been in practice for over 30 years. Not even one positive one. As such, it is important to share for those who don’t know that according to California law (Civil Code 1670.8), otherwise known as “the Yelp law”, it is illegal for the likes of Mr. McMahon to intimidate or threaten anyone with regards to online reviews. This, coupled with the Federal Consumer Review Fairness Act and anti-SLAPP laws, protects online reviews and pictures and videos from meritless threats or litigation. This is important because so many of us are benefiting from reviews from community members regarding what to watch out for as well as what is recommended. If someone had written the truthful review that I am going to write about my experience with this attorney, I would have avoided him at all costs and wouldn’t have had such a horrific experience and outcome of my matter. Robert McMahon lied about so many things during the nine months he was my attorney of record that I feel like he’s a monster. The most egregious and disgusting was his lying about my writing a complaint that he wrote. He drafted and filed a complaint on my behalf that I told him sounded like someone with some sort of a disability wrote it. It was incoherent and uneducated. Then, opposing counsel also insulted him by stating that it was the WORST complaint he’d ever read in all of his years in the legal profession. Mr. McMahon lied, presumably to save face, and threw me, his client who trusted him and hired him to fight for and protect her, under the bus. I had to contact opposing counsel to set the record straight and stand up for myself against my two faced, creepy attorney, while receiving texts from Mr. McMahon asking me to spend time with him either socially or romantically. I felt so sick for so many weeks at the atrocious nature of his actions and him taking advantage of what was supposed to be an attorney-client relationship. According to public record, easily obtained by anyone via Laguna Beach City FOIA, Mr. McMahon has been described by his family members as sick, abusive and incompetent (incapable of taking care of himself). He has humiliated me, exploited my vulnerability, abused me, defrauded me and blown my matter. In my complaints to the Laguna Beach Police Department and the Bar, I have cited what I have been advised (by his attorney peers) as to his innumerable violations of the California State Bar Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. As such, I do not believe this individual should be anywhere near the practice of law.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
