Harley and Heather were excellent partners during a stressful time. The legal process is treacherous and this team always made me feel like everything was going to be okay. Lo and behold everything turned out exactly as expected. You have to respect when someone does exactly what they say they will do. I highly recommend this law firm.

Harley Wagner and his assistant Heather McCoy handled my DUI case perfectly! From beginning to end they were both very professional and very friendly to engage with. Harley informed me that his goal was to get my charges dismissed, and that is exactly what happened. I could no be more please with the outcome. I can definitely recommend Harley Wagner for anyone who finds themselves in need of a lawyer who specializes in DUI charges. I felt completely confident in his hands through the whole process.

Please do yourself a favor and hire this gentleman! You won’t regret this choice!!

If you want wood-paneled office walls, posh client accommodations, and sky-high fees to help pay for those and other unnecessary things, Mark Sutton and his office are not for you. On the other hand, if, as I did, you want an able, experienced attorney who knows the people who need to be known in the court system and who seeks not just good but the best results, then Mark Sutton is your guy. In two separate cases, Mark well exceeded my hopes in one and met them in another. I could not have asked for more in terms of his getting things done and keeping the client's interest foremost.

I hired Mark to defend my son who got into trouble with a group of juveniles. I wanted him to take responsibility for his actions, pay his fair share and learn from the experience, but the police were out to ruin his future with felony convictions and jail time. Working with an attorney is not something that most people do every day, so it’s hard to know what parts of a case to expect an attorney to handle, and which you should expect to handle yourself. To be honest, I’m still not really sure exactly where that boundary is, but I learned that you and your lawyer are a team, and Mark was an excellent teammate. Why do we need lawyers? To understand the legal jargon and speak for you in court; to negotiate offers; and to guide you through the basics of the legal process. But more than that, you need someone that understands the intricacies of negotiation and has good instincts on what will and won't work in court. Mark is that lawyer. I am a very proactive person, and waiting for the wheels of justice to turn was very frustrating for me. Mark worked very hard on several occasions, to keep me from making rash decisions in my frustration and explained how important patience was in any case. With Mark’s guidance, and when the time was appropriate, I was able to communicate with the plaintiffs, at their discretion, and discuss what they thought was a reasonable punishment for the offense. This helped in softening the prosecutor's stance on the case. We also gathered as many witness statements as possible for Mark's review and use in the case. Mark pretty much did the rest. He has a great understanding of how cases make their way through the courts, when to negotiate, how to press for action and how to get all parties on your side – as much as they can be. He has a good working relationship with the prosecutor, which helped convince the police to look at the statements we had collected and take a full and honest statement from my son. After a great deal of effort on both our parts, we got the reasonable settlement we were looking for with a misdemeanor charge and probation in place of felonies and jail time. The lesson for my son is paying off. He broke ties with the juvenile troublemakers, is working hard and is not far from paying off his settlement.

Brad, I just HAVE TO SAY...I really appreciate you representing me. Your demeanor, your empathy, and especially your explanatory skills are spot on... not to mention your intelligence and "lawyers skills". And finally you "get it " ... you know exactly where I'm coming from and what I am looking for. I realize the outcome is certainly not known but you have my full faith and confidence. I appreciate you, Regards, Dave

Bradley Wright and his team will do right by you. I had never had any issues with the law and was terrified of what was happening. Bradley Wright got me through the worst time in my life. He is honest and trustworthy more than other lawyers I have dealt with. He helped me and my family understand what was happening and the outcomes that could happen. In the end he is the best guy for the job if you need defense. Very satisfied with the outcome of having The Wright Team on my side!

WARNING. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THEIR BILLING. I paid $7,500 as a ONE time full upfront fee to represent my girlfriend. Then I get notice that they want another $7,500, even before they went to trial. I was also under the belief that Kevin Mills himself was going to represent my girlfriend and he did not. I personally feel scammed on how they dealt with me. Now because I couldn't come up with the extra $7,500 she will more than likely be going to jail. I honestly feel massively scammed by the whole ordeal.

I have been a client of The Riddell Law Group PLLC and can confidently say that Christian Riddell is an exceptional attorney. He advocates passionately and fights for what is right, holding his oath to a high standard. He is not afraid to challenge anyone who is wrong, and his dedication to justice is evident. The secretary and paralegals at The Riddell Law Group PLLC are wonderful. They go above and beyond to help you, ensuring that you feel supported and informed throughout the process. Their assistance is truly appreciated. Christian Redall’s prices are very reasonable, and he communicates with the utmost respect. He is straightforward and honest, never hesitating to let you know how he feels. Balancing the roles of a lawyer, husband, and father while serving the community is undoubtedly challenging, and he handles it with remarkable dedication. It’s important to note that Mr. Redall often travels to handle court cases outside of the state, which, along with having a small team, may contribute to occasional communication challenges. Despite this, he is committed to adjusting and improving communication to ensure that clients receive regular updates and feel supported. I believe that Christian Redall is one of the best attorneys to represent you in a CPS case. He has fought for me and continues to fight for me, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to justice and his clients. Mrs.Hiett

Charged for something that wasn't mine thanks to Nicola. Thanks for a record at 23 years old with two babies for something that wasn't even mine and was already admitted. I have the rest of my life ahead of me. I would rate Nicola Negative stars if there were an option to do so. Don't you want to save people from charges they didn't commit? I thought that was the point. Thanks for putting a charge on my record that wasn't even initially mine even after the other party admitted so. Worst. Public. Defender. Ever. If she did her job correctly, I wouldn't have been charged for something that wasn't anything to do with me. She doesn't care. It's written all over her face, and voice. If they want to, they will. Hopefully she learns the point of her job before she ruins everyone's record and allows you to be charged for things you honest to God had nothing to do with. Let it be her though...she wouldn't have let herself or her daughter be charged for something she had nothing to do with.

I have had nothing but great, positive experiences with Christian Riddell. He made me a promise that he would fight for my son, and he's delivered every single time. This last case went from state to Federal & as we all know you don't beat their charges. Christian put a ton of time & work into our case, worked hard & it paid off in the courtroom. Justice did prevail & finally we now have a lawyer who is fair, works hard for his clients & gives his all. Our family will forever be grateful for what he's done for us. It's up to the client to follow up & set up meetings to get up to speed on your case. The negative comments are so hard to believe because we received the absolute opposite representation. Five Stars from us!

This attorney was appointed to represent my daughter. He never contacted her. He would not return my calls if I was able to leave a message. Several times his mailbox was full. I finally friended him on FB and he accepted the request. He was running for an elected office at the time. I have picked up a packet to file a formal complaint with the WV judicial board. Advised my daughter and spoke (the one time he answered the phone)and sent him a msg via msgr requesting new counsel be appointed. That was in March, motion filed in May. Today she was appointed new counsel. Would not recommend. I wrote this on behalf og my daughter.

I have nothing but excellent things to say about this man. He was my public defender and as my public defender he fought tooth and nail for me with no hesitation. He explained every possible outcome in my case and the best way to go about getting the outcome we are looking for. He fought for me as it I had paid him a heap of money but in fact was court appointed. He even has went against my old probation officer that was arresting me on a regular basis for things that I should have never been violated for. All I can say is if you have him appointed you are in the best hands you could possibly be in. This is Mr. Theodore Cox in case Mr. Henderson sees this. I am hoping so so he can see how much I appreciated what all he did for me.

I have custody of my two granddaughters and I presented my situation to this office, they gave me high hopes by telling me that I have good standings to adopt my grandbabies. However, it's been over six months and nothing has been done or filled on my behalf. When I call, and I've been burning their phone up, I can never reach anyone; I can only leave a message on the answering machine and they do not return my calls. I've spent all my savings with Court cost and lawyers to make sure my grandbabies are safe and taken care of. Understandable, they may be backed up; but at least return my calls or at least file something with the courts.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
