she's very supportive and willing to do what is best for you, the client or customer. She even replies to emails on weekends, I hope she does well when we do and if I decide to go trial. There are so much to my case it's insanely whacked. Even involves a domestic violence outside of Snohomish county reason why I won't take the plea for it is as the other person may very well be released from all his illegal activities he does. Jessica understands the situation and she knows what is best for me but right now I think going to fight in the trial knowing from my heart that I am innocent and she can fight for me I know she can go all the way, I believe so much in Jessica she's just got that power inside her, very strong business even a counselor, she's everything she can do anything. Also her selection in clothing are absolutely just amazing ensemble. She's almost the legally blonde (movie) in real life, but even better.

I definitely recommend Mr. Tario to anyone needing representation for personal injury. He was professional and knowledgeable, and helped me win my case. I liked how at ease he was during the whole process from beginning to end. You can tell he's done this many times, and he knows what to expect and what to do next. The only thing that caught me by surprise was the additional fees. He is upfront about his 40% contingency fee and let's you know there is an additional charge for filing fees and whatnot. However the additional fees are 2000.00$ on top of the 40% which is already a little higher than the 33.3% that other lawyers charge. I just wish I would have known that or maybe I overlooked that in the contract.

Michael D. Laws persuaded me 8 years ago (at a very young age) to plead guilty and accept a deal to an offense I did not commit in order to lighten his case load. His strategy was “if we go to trial they could give you the maximum sentence which would be 2 years in prison”. Me being a fresh out of high school and recently enrolled in college young guy was deathly afraid of what prison would do to me so I took his “advice” and plead guilty. Now 8 years later with two kids I have trouble finding a job to support my family because of a charge that is on my record. Needless to say, would not recommend.

I hired Richard a year ago at the recommendation of my partner who had previously used him for a family law matter. Throughout the process he has been very open, honest, and his communication has been fast and efficient. I really appreciated his collaborative approach, making sure that his work was continually in line my objectives and advising me of potential costs of taking certain routes over others. A year later and nearing the finish line I just found out that my bill was over 60% lower than my ex's bill with another local attorney. Richard is fair, honest, and hard working and I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

I was cited for a DUI infraction. Handcuffs, fingerprinting and holding cells were not things I had much experience with. When the severity of the charges actually set in, I was in need of a lawyer to represent me. The lawyer needed to explain in very simple terms what 'DOL', 'Blow and Go', 'Community Service verses Jail Time' and Legal Rights meant to me as a defendant and what impact the charges would have in my life. Both short term and long term. There were four legal firms I spoke with. The attorneys all had different personalities, experience and ways of interacting with me. Some wanted to impress me with their accomplishments in the courtroom regarding other cases while some centered on their list of influential people they knew in the prosecutor's office. John was the ONLY lawyer who took the time to get to know me and the circumstances surrounding my specific situation. After speaking with the various law firms, I went back to see John and ask him to represent me. As I had previously stated, the process of finding competent council to represent me was something unfamiliar. Really the only guide in the process was to trust my instincts. This is where John really distances himself as a good person and lawyer from the other lawyers I spoke with. He made me feel more like a friend who was going to represent me in court. And not like I was just one of many clients. The legal knowledge he gave about my particular situation was delivered in a way that was not condescending. His approach was Pro-active in my defense. We discussed what course of action I was most comfortable with in going forward. John made me feel I was in charge of the situation. He would discuss different ways to present my case to the court. But it was my decision alone. Some of the other lawyers told me what direction they were going to take my case in court. Rather than me having the final say in the matter. I was to handover all decisions to them and just go along for the ride. As with most situations in life, bumps along the way are to be expected. The preparation for my court date required me to interact with other firms and their representatives. As I had previously stated, John is a Pro-active attorney. He had me speak to other people to gain a perspective as to how the court system views me as a DUI defendant. This also allowed him to show the court my heart was in the right place. It gave me a new perspective on how my actions could have had devastating effects on other peoples lives. The bumps occurred when some of these people tried to belittle and preach to me without knowing all the facts. John assured me this should not have happened. The other bumps were regarding the court proceeding. As is often the case when many people are involved in one event, there was mis-communication between some the parties. John was able to interact with everyone and resolve to my satisfaction the situation. The bottom line is; I believe in John Gleason The results of my trial were fair and could have been more severe without John John always had time for me whether in person (sometimes without an appointment) or on the phone. I highly value Communication and John never let me down. To the person reading this, if you are in need of legal council, do yourself a huge favor and at least speak with John.

I hired Ms. Doerner to explore a custody change despite her mixed reviews, understanding that the family law experience can inspire strong emotions. My experience however, was consistent with the criticisms. Prior to hiring her I was told what I wanted to hear. Afterward, communication was extremely poor. I didn’t need my hand held, but her office was just not responsive. During the rare meeting, I was talked at rather than listened to. Filing took months. The process was disorganized. The strategy was never provided so I racked up extensive charges a) asking for direction, and b) providing useless information. We drafted and filed unnecessary documents. When I asked about inconsistencies, I was told that she hadn’t said what she’d previously told me. The bulk of her effort during the hearing was reiterating what had previously been litigated, then she could not respond to the (clearly irritated) commissioner when he asked specifically for justification for the hearing. Afterward, I received all the months of bills at once. I am left with the impression that Ms. Doerner did not have time or attention for my case. I cannot speak to her legal abilities or advice since those were never really demonstrated to me.

Angelyn was cool; fixed errors, got prosecution to jump. Unfortunately, legal remedy not what was promised/expected. I felt all wanted case over for varrious reasons. Couldn't ask, though, because Angelyn was a no-show at sentencing! Her associate was wholly inadequate. Wouldn't recommend unless you're fifty rich, also a lawyer, and guilty. She should explain ALL ramifications of legal remedies and not expect clients to ask (relevant) questions. Fallout for uninformed is terrible.

I would not recomend Ms. Gates at all. She lied to my husband and I about what he would get for time. Everything she said, and promised, the opposit happened. She did not explain to my husband what an open plea was. She used our children against him to con him into pleading when she knew at the end she intended to sell him out. She is not personable, and she curses while on the telephone. She is very rude. Furthermore, she did not show up to my husbands hearing one time, and she works with a 'team' who takes over a week to return calls. BAD !

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
