I have referred beverly Saxon Leonard since 2001 when she helped me in regards to a business matter. Not only did she give honest and valuable advice, I referred her to other friends and she obtained very favorable results. Beverly does not over-promise. If you are looking for a glad hander, she is not the one you want. If you seek great results and a attorney who has integrity and a solid track record, Beverly is the perfect choice. I know many lawyers in Napa. I like most of them.Beverly is far and above the one I would trust to handle my legal issues. If you live in Napa, or if you have a need and live in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Beverly is my number one referral

Beverly is very professional, honest, fair, and will not waste your time or money. Beverly keeps you informed, and will honestly tell you, your options allowing you to make the best informed decision. Beverly plays no games, she is all business. Our case was highly litigated, and full of useless emails back and forth, pointless arguing, of course an extension of the recent divorce. Beverly would not respond to emails she was copied on, unless needed to protect our legal rights, or enforce an agreement. Beverly is very professional, and knows what she is doing, the attorney she was dealing with on the opposing side, was less professional, and honestly sort of comical, but Beverly stayed focused and prevailed at everything we asked for her assistance with in our case. Beverly was able to over-turn a full physical custody to 50/50, obtained orders to protect my rights as a parent, and get financial obligations calculated based on fair division. Beverly had to do all this with the opposing party not forthcoming. Best Attorney in NAPA!

My attorney Michael H. Keeley became my legal counsellor and High Trust Leader with the same high interest in my welfare that I had. Mike exercised a number of better-way outcomes with his resourcefulness and initiative to influence the court, present my case getting the right legal things done for my welfare. He helped me understand the legal issues and our resources and people for possible solutions. He helped me think and separate what mattered most from my emotions. Most important he gave me options, increased my understanding of how they work and added value to my life. I saw that he was reliably on my side having my best interests at heart resulting in from good to great outcomes I was seeking. I am grateful for his accountability and effective execution which is kindness. Mark

There really are not enough words to express the level of gratitude I currently feel, nor can words speak to the sense of relief that came over me as Mr. Keeley moved on my son’s behalf. I have not been able to sleep at night considering the defense of my son in this truly life altering circumstance. I would like to take this time to express my sincere feelings of appreciation for Mr. Keeley's services with regards to the defense of my son. "Thank you SO MUCH for the time you have invested on this case and the patient understanding you have shown to friends, family and me with all the frantic and perhaps, often stupid questions. Mr. Keeley is indeed a fine attorney. His outgoing and professional manner coupled with his willingness to communicate openly have helped make these last few months bearable for our family. His reputation is truly one that he can take pride in and clearly he is a credit to his chosen profession. Our family was indeed fortunate that he was the attorney assigned to my son’s case in a 'court appointed' capacity! He has truly been an anchor for this family in a dark and stormy sea of ugliness.

Doug did an exceptional job representing me, in my case it took a unique approach but he delivered a more than positive result. He was very professional and compassionate in our meetings and was also very communicative with my family throughout the process. Doug is a very skilled attorney and I would recommend him to anyone who would benefit from his representation.

I was violently beaten while holding my child and left covered in bruises from head to toe in San Mateo county at 71 larkspur Ave in Daly City CA in 2015. Later that same year the same man who left me covered in bruises shot another man in Napa county and they sent me to prison for it while he got away as the victim. The sheriff's department set up flash bang after me and the others were already in custody and then they asked the neighbors if they herd gun shots just so they could add it in their report even though there was no actual witness

All, I unequivocally recommend Cate Beekman as your next attorney. Specifically, if you need 5-star representation, go with Ms. Beekman post haste. Why? Ms. Beekman is highly effective, brilliant, thoughtful, creative and most of all; she accomplishes the goal of zealous advocacy without insult, injury or raising her voice. She communicates as well to her client (me), as she does to judges. Furthermore, her working knowledge of legal standards and your issues – even if based on first impression - is first-class. When? If you have a current attorney (fire them, I mean that with all sincerity), retain her and thank me later. Not all attorneys are created equally. If you are looking for an attorney, bring her on board immediately. I witnessed first hand, her ability to digest voluminous information – distill what was relevant and irrelevant and make cogent arguments. That goes double in a small area such as Napa, CA where the paucity of effective counsel leaves much to be desired. You have a diamond in the rough in Ms. Beekman. She does not use superfluous words or enter anything into evidence to make the case for opposing counsel. She understands the burden of proof and uses it effectively and surgically. Background? For context (what is it worth), I never write reviews. Everyone’s situation is different. I also put little opinion in the faith of others. However, Ms. Beekman’s representation was so beyond perfection, that I believe I owe it to everyone reading this, that you hire her immediately. What’s more, if it matters, I am an attorney myself, so I believe I know what good and bad lawyering looks like (or should like). Ms. Beekman represented me in a matter (that in my opinion had no merit). She took the matter to its logical conclusion and prepared me and represented my interest before the tribunal very well. First, her legal acumen is without peer. Opposing counsel, while over-matched, was a worthy adversary. Nevertheless, she objected when necessary. She also did not do anything to showboat or appease me for the sake of “getting even”. Additionally she made well-reasoned, articulated and ultimately effective arguments on my behalf. Second, her demeanor is even keel. Her temperament is the same. She knows how to calm you down, while also laying the crumbs for the trier of fact to find in your favor. To conclude, her sunny disposition is just who she is; a good-hearted person. However, do not let that disarm you, she is legally lethal when necessary. That said, if you need to win and “bet the case” (your tenuous position) – Ms. Beekman is who you should go with immediately.

It was 3 o'clock on a holiday week. We needed a lawyer in Napa and found Cate Beekman. She was incredibly professional and helpful, providing a much-needed sense of calm in a potentially scary situation. I would recommend Cate to anyone looking for legal help in a criminal matter. In the event that I might need help again, she will be my first call.

The Office of Douglas Pharr helped us with everything from day one. The communication was efficient, and professional. Olga was super helpful with communication in Spanish and in English. Attorney Douglas Pharr genuinely cares about his clients. I had another attorney to help with the same case but for another reason, and Attorney Douglas Pharr made sure that he was on the same page as my other attorney before he made other decisions. We highly recommend the Law Office of Douglas Pharr, for his EXPERTISE, COMMUNICATION, and his team's PROFESSIONALISM.

I am just really bummed in my situation . Can I ask a question to you folks ? If your case is about to settle don’t you think if any more fees you may have before settling your case it should be told to you up front ? I paidthem15,0000 dollars at the end of 12,500 before I settled and then ended up owing another 2500 plus? I feel a lawyer you hire should tell you other fees you may owe before settling your court case . Like hey you only have 900 left of your retainer and you’re gonna owe another 2500 on top of that before we settle just so you understand before taking a deal for your divorce ok ? Don’t you think that would be proper etiquette because if I was someone’s lawyer specifically who’s When filing for disability and even if I wasn’t I’d tell them so they know and don’t get blindsided by more fees when all is said and done I got no money out of my settlement because she didn’t tell me my other fees .Very upsetting wouldn’t have settled my case whatsoever period if they had told me I had so much more money in fees owed to the firm. Caryn Hreha isn’t really ready to be a divorce attorney she needs more help preparing properly for her clients . Choose another person way too much money and not enough done . Then she will cut you off and not be your lawyer when you explain your upset with how the end of your case was handled, not proper etiquette whatsoever . Not ok .

Jennifer Byram has been our family’s attorney and helped my parents with their trust will and estate planning and proved to be very knowledgeable, caring and supportive through difficult decisions and circumstances that required sensitivity, an intuitive nature and diplomacy. She is also valuable in helping and understanding law as it relates to elderly clients and their special needs and unique circumstances. I highly recommend Jennifer Byram with the utmost trust and respect.

I was referred by SF attorney that Mr Levinsohn worked with. Mr Levinsohn kept on calling and calling so I thought he was on top of his game. Once he got my money he wanted to charge again for trial ( I hired him specifically for trial, it’s on our agreement) Then he tried to charge 5k for different dismissed case saying he would make it go away forever. Hmm dismissed means it went away?,!? He made me to hire a private investigator to do his job, thank god the investigator was so good. My case was weak case for DA and DA tried so hard to make me accept the plea deal. It was postponed probably 7 times and eventually got dropped. Mr Levinsohn was really hard to communicate calmly, all he wants is money money. I found him unkind, lazy and rude. If I could turn back the time I would never hire him again. He still owes me money from PI investigation but I’m so sure I’ll never see that money again. I totally wasted all my money on him. I wouldn’t recommend this lawyer.

I would not hire this attorney who was referred to me. He stared off really kind and nice however, it turned a different way. I ended up having to hire an actual experienced federal attorney. I highly recommend that YOU do your research on this attorney. Ask specifically how many federal cases, and general cases he has had an entire career, ask about his knowledge and understanding of federal and state laws. He charged me a flat rate of $25K to be my attorney which I have now found out was EXTREMELY high for his years of actual experience (# of cases, #of trials won, appeals, the list goes on). I I asked for an itmeized statement which in return was a joke (I wish I could post) it was literally a numbered document he made and said he was charging $600/hr (this hourly rate was never discussed). He also charged 2hrs for creating a document that a middle student could create. I would STAY AWAY from this attorney and always get a second opinion for local bay area attonrey's who are notable and high profile.

Michael’s years of experience with the judicial system was very apparent, he was able to maneuver through the case with ease, he won motions he submitted and ultimately was able to negotiate my case no jail time and community service. I am hoping to use his services with my expungement . Michael was always available to speak with me he explained the ins and outs of the case and made every effort to fight on my behalf. Having a lawyer that is knowledgeable and capable of taking a case all the way to trial is a must, he did not back down to the idea of taking the case to trial if necessary, this I believe was one of his assets along with a vast knowledge for the legal system. He made no promise and was very honest, this type of integrity is difficult to find in a criminal lawyer.

I have witnessed a few cases that Kecia Lind has prosecuted over the years and I am astounded by her lack of professionalism and integrity. In one case, after making arguments that had no basis in reality, evidence proved she was being dishonest. It was terrifying and a real eye-opener for this non-attorney to witness. Though I’ve never been a defendant, I have empathy for anyone who has to deal with her.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
