I can't say enough good about these guys. I never doubted that Mr. Seymour had my back and was working diligently on my case. I am the victim of false allegations and Mr. Seymour patiently worked with prosecutors to get my charges dropped and took a giant weight off my and my family's shoulders. I can finally breathe, thanks to him!

My husband and I were in a horrific accident that resulted in a near head on collision that completely totaled our truck and travel trailer. The insurance company for the driver, Elephant insurance, refused to pay some of the medical bills to include plastic surgery for the scars on my face, and repeatedly ignored my calls and emails over a two year period in an attempt to run through to the statute of limitations. I couldn’t find an attorney that would take my case. All with excuses, but with only one week to the deadline, I searched again and had the great fortune of finding and retaining Ms Hazel. All I can say is, wow. She jumped right in and investigated every possible avenue to get this situation resolved, to include my own insurance company that withheld funds. This is a gal that knows what she is doing and not afraid to go after those responsible. I’m in awe, and will absolutely recommend her to my family and friends. I hope I’m never in a situation like this again, but if I am, she will be my first phone call.

Tommy was actually my second lawyer I hired for my case, the previous attorney is a good sales man and knows his stuff, but his personality made it difficult to work with him, Then I found Tommy and he showed a keen interest in my case and more importantly, I truly felt like he believed the atypical things that got me to this point. My previous lawyer asked me towards the end of the initial court hearing "you really didn't confess?" just blew my mind because I had been saying that for years. Anyways I hired Tommy on a related charge which I take full responsibility for. He was always pleasant to conversate with on things that can have serious impacts on my life. He also is able to explain things in laymen terms so there never was confusion about what was going on with my case. And the outcome was the absolute best I could have hoped for. Thanks again Tommy!

Did not want to release my name due to my personal information being spread-- but I reassure you that if you find your self in ANY type of trouble, CALL MICHAEL WENK! I found him in February 2019 after my arrest. I was held in Hays County Jail, and thought my future was over, UNTIL I found Wenk. He gave me a set of things to do in order for things to go smoothly in the court, FOLLOW THEM. I can gladly say that my case is getting expunged once I complete the last steps of my process. POCS is a FELONY charge incase you guys are unaware. If it was not for Michael Wenk's tenacity and knowledge of the judicial system, my future would be OVER. I was literally in tears once the judge said how much of a blessing he was as an attorney and how grateful I am for getting this off my record with NO CHARGE WHATSOEVER. PLEASE, call MR. WENK, compared to all other attorney's his fees are SO affordable! He managed to give me the ultimate happiness within 7 months, cases like this typically take A YEAR! He is ALWAYS there to answer your questions-- he does not ever BS you, and without a doubt is someone who can give you the light at the end of that dark tunnel. San Marcos is SO lucky to have an attorney who cares about the future of students who make mistakes. Michael Wenk is a resource that can change your life. I hope this review is helpful & gives you the best results for your wallets & futures.

Mr Wenk is by far one of the best if not THE BEST Attorney/Lawyer I have ever had. He is dedicated and very very knowledgeable about the in’s and outs of the court system. He is passionate about his career and those he represents. If only all Attorney’s were like him, but unfortunately it is far and few especially ones who charge a decent reasonable price and goes above and beyond to get the best results for his clients. His goal is to avoid a conviction and jail time and will work on your case to find the best solution. He even answers emails over the weekend with any questions I may have. How many attorneys do that?

He also was a district autorney in hays county as well. He explains everything and keeps you updated. If you gave a question he will answer. Most importantly, anything he says he will do. He WILL do. He got both of my charges dismissed. I would recommend him to anyone.

Mrs. Schoon represented me in Comal County on multiple charges. Not my first charges either. If you know Comal Co. Then you know it's a hostile county and are playing no games. Long story short I went to prison from another county, made parole, Comal County picked me up from releasing, made bond again, spoke with Susan about resolving the charges quickly she quoted me a price then quoted me a lesser price if the case was quick and easy(first and only time I've heard that) , she came back next day and actually charged me the lesser(stand up move) i did 8/11 months of my parole, got indicted by Comal Co. 30 days before the statute ran out, went to court still on parole , d.a was offering me stupid high numbers like maxing out the state jail felonies at 2 years, giving me 8 on the 3rd degree felony. Keep in mind i just got out of sitting in Harris county for two years fighting a bogus case I ultimately signed for 3 on. Susan went in and got me time served on all of it. I just had to go down to get a new number. I was home before I missed my next parole date. Most of these reviews on other attorneys on this site are by parents who are just happy they're kid didn't have to go penn state. Not by the people who been thru the system (maybe even multiple times. Allegedly) I've seen a lot personally but I've never seen anyone like Mrs. Susan Schoon . She was an absolute ace. Good response times. Great attitude. Relaxed cool court room presence. Well respected and couldn't be more easy to talk to.

My family is a good family with great kids. When my son was arrested for DUI, we were shocked! I had no idea where to turn or how the legal system works and I couldn't believe I had to hire a "criminal" lawyer. I consulted with four local lawyers about our case before I hired Ms Schoon. I was so impressed with her knowledge of the law, her self confidence, and her warm, caring demeanor. She put our fears to rest as much as could be done in that kind of situation. She saw us through to the end and got a great deal for my son. Ms Schoon took the time to really get to know us and she kept in very close communication with us through every step. She was very clear about all of the terminology as well as the conditions of the plea so that we felt comfortable that we knew what to expect and what would be important for our son to do on probation. We felt very grateful to her for her efforts. We would recommend her to anyone at all who has been arrested and finds themself in need of a strong advocate. Ms Schoon is respectful and courteous. She has checked in once in a while to see how everything is going for our son. She even let us know when we would be able to have the conviction expunged from his record so that it will not follow him throughout his career. We plan to call her again when the time for that comes.

I finally obtained another firm and cut my losses with Barbara. Believe me the loses were substantial. She was ok until my ex hires a lawyer competent, motivated lawyer to oppose her. On a previous case with Mr Garcia I had to do all the footwork myself. I would call and he would usually not respond to my concerns or questions except for "okay". He also missed several meetings that he guaranteed me he would be at. In my current case I am requesting for a new lawyer because he does not believe in me and has been downright rude, during the adversary hearing there were many statements that the witnesses made that were not true or they were giving their personal opinions from what that they thought rather than knowing the actual true answer so when I was put on the stand Mr Garcia hardly asked me any questions and he asked me no questions that would have helped to contradict what the witnesses said. Afterward when I asked why he didn't his response was "it wouldn't have helped anyways the judge had already made up her mind". The outcome from the hearing was horrible and I've asked Mr Garcia many times what I can and should do and he basically gave me no suggestions even when I would suggest things he would answer with vague responses such as "you can try" or "if that's what you want to do". I have reached out to him repeatedly for advice or suggestions. I just need to be pointed in the right direction and he hasn't done anything to help at all. I am extremely disappointed because I am more than willing to do whatever it takes to turn my situation around and it's very obvious that he doesn't care, He doesn't believe in me, and has made it more than obvious that he doesn't want to be on the case. He's doing the bare minimum he has to do.

LITERALLY charged 3 times what other attorneys cost and when you need to speak to him, you might receive a call days later from an assistant who doesn't know anything either. Will offer suggestions that aren't applicable. The absolute worst experience I've ever encountered with a lawyer. Nightmare. I'll start by saying that David is a gernally kind and professional guy. Once I got concerns escalated to him, things were handled. With that out of the way... David's "assistant" was very kind prior to taking me on as a client. From then on, every phone call for an update was contentious. She would lie to get me off the phone. She would tell me how my calls for updates were preventing her from doing her job. She told me no less than 10 times that everything was going as scheduled and she'd call me when there was a change. I eventaully found out that she'd been lying ot me for 3 full weeks. My paperwork hadn't even been filed. It leads me to suspect that they filed ZERO paperwork from January until mid February, while she was learning the e-file system. During that time, I have no doubt that other people were being told what I was, that "everything was fine, we'll call you with an update." Every single call was like pulling teeth. I hired these people, paid tehm, for them to represent my interests. They were less expensive that many competitors, but David is pretty decorated. I'll add that his assitant told me on my first call to "ignore" the reviews posted here. She said Axxo was charging to remove bad reviews. The bad reviews exist for this attorney because it's a horrible practice. If I had to do it over, I would spend 3x what I did or handle it myself before I'd hire them again. This assitant is incompetent and dishonest. Her employer willfully ignores it. She took my number 20+ times in two months and never delivered teh promised callback. I had to call every time, to be treated as an inconvenience, and most times become angry jsut to get teh simplest things addressed.

Several times I showed to court at 8:30 (which was when the docket called for me to be present) and David did not show until 1:30 PM. When you are traveling out of town to come to court, communication would be appreciated. I felt taken advantage of and instead of his legal assistant being knowledgeable or responsible for following up with his clients, one he was hired, I had to beg to get him on the phone. Not professional and reassuring when you are dealing with matters that will ultimately effect a large part of your ilfe.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
