Young people don't always make the best decisions. Jared went above and beyond, and then beyond again for my son. Jared was able to gain the trust of my son within the first meeting. In the end we had the best outcome possible. We are very please with the work that Jared did for us, and we will be referring everyone we know who needs the service to him. If you want a good lawyer who will fight for you, answer all your crazy questions, and actually care about the outcome, then Jared is your guy! We highly recommend him!

The last 6-12 months have been the worst of my life trying to help my teenager, Mr. Woram was there every step of the way. He made sure that we felt supported, he did everything possible to help my son and I am so grateful. I cannot say thank you enough. He even stated his concern for me as a mother and made sure to check on me and my mental health, he truly cares about his clients and their families. Obviously, he cannot control everything, but he will do everything possible to get the best outcome possible. Thank you again for everything!!

Mr. Bernstein did a phenomenal job on my case. I had 7 prior DUIs when I hired Mr. Bernstein for my eighth. The County of Clackamas was insisting on the maximum sentence of 1 full year in jail on this charge. However, with Mr. Bernsteins advise and his amazing litigation experience, I served 75 days and am enrolled in a long term treatment program that was long overdue. I highly recommend Mr. Bernstein for criminal defense. He knows what he is doing and I have the highest respect for him.

Ben Johnston is in my considered opinion a superlative lawyer in his area of expertise (traffic law). He has continually demonstrated a level of effectiveness and professionalism that other lawyers have as of yet to consistently demonstrate to me. Ben managed my case with total comprehension of the issues and challenges, setting out an effective strategy, setting my expectations correctly, and helping to achieve an outcome that a lesser attorney would not have achieved. He has repeatedly out-shined his colleagues in capability every time I have had him represent me. He is simply said a credit to the Oregon Bar and as a member of the legal profession, and an officer of the court.

I cannot thank Bruce enough! It was a situation of what the police saw as the "victims" word and their word against my own, and fortunately Bruce and his team saw through the "victim" as well as the police report and realized the situation was more complicated than what the law was wanting to portray. I was arrested without cause when the call that got me wrongfully arrested was actually on my ex (the "victim" in some of the officers' eyes). Luckily, Bruce's team, the camera footage, the civilian who called in the incident as well as the pictures I had as proof of the abuse towards me that the "victim" did, helped us fight this (there is a lot more to this but that's a bare gist of it). If it weren't for Bruce, my Private Investigator and the rest of his team, I don't believe I would be in the situation I am now (a new lease on life) completely off of Probation and headed to a brighter future without my ex the "victim" to hinder mine and my son's life any longer. THANK YOU BRUCE!!! If it weren't for you I would more than likely be not only still dealing with all of this, although it is very possible I may also be in jail at this given time. I could sincerely give you a hug (with your permission of course) because you have lifted a huge weight off my shoulders and made it possible to be a successful mother making 6 figures a year now and finally able to put all of this behind me. Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!

This lawyer,Bruce Tarbox, represented me about 5 years ago.I was charged with 4 criminal charges.2 were more serious and the other 2 was not.He didn't fully investigate my case like he should. Before my trial,he was working with prosecutors on a plea deal not consulting with me first.A few weeks later,he came to me with a plea deal he made with prosecutors. The deal was to plead guilty to 2 charges, spend 2 weeks in jail plus 3 years probation and they'll dropped the other 2 charges. Not knowing much about criminal law myself, the 2 charges that they're going to dropped was the 2 lesser serious ones.Considering I've been in the US over 20 years with no criminal record,he could've tell them to dropped all charges or go to trial where I have a huge chance of winning. He didn't do neither! Instead,he persuaded me to plead guilty and accept the deal because its a good deal! Smh!!! Also under Padilla law,all defense attorneys are required to advise their clients of immigration consequences and to help their clients avoid getting convicted of crimes which is deportable under immigration law! Mr.Tarbox never did any of that! And now I'm deported to my country! And when I was in the immigration detention center,I filed for post conviction relief and my post conviction lawyer confronted Mr.Tarbox to find out about my case and what happened? Mr.Tarbox was defensive and lied to my lawyer about it! Now I'm deported and I have 2 convictions on my record that I didn't do or guilty of!

He was always very short with me the times I could actually get a hold of him. When deciding what to do with my case and explaining the plea offer he neglected to tell me multiple things that were in the offer including restitution payments. I asked him multiple times if I was loosing my licence and he told me no even though in the deal I was loosing it for 1 year. He neglected to tell me about A WHOLE charge that I was being charged with. I asked him if he would counter offer the deal asking for the DA to drop the felony to a misdemeanor, he came back saying they said not at this time but that once I successfully completed probation it would drop to a misdemeanor. He told me it was a good deal because it was a package and so I was only paying fines on one charge and there was only probation on one charge. Only after I plead in court and the judge was reading me back the details of the deal did I find out about there being fines and probation on both charges, restitution and the extra charge. When I brought it up to him he was extremely rude to me saying that the only reason I was saying anything was because I was about to get sentenced, admitting that he had neglected to tell me about the restitution fees but he wasn't sure about the rest and what did I want him to do. A year later when I am about to get off probation I find out that the crime being lowered to a misdemeanor is not in the judgement I call him and he tells me he never said that to me and he has no notes of that. I explain to him that, that was the only reason I took the deal and how we had, had issues before about his negligence of properly informing me of the details he just kept asking what I wanted him to do. He did not care about me or what happened to me and admitted to his negligence but what did I want him to do??

I talked to Squire Bozorth twice on the phone and he was extremely rude, abrupt and completely inaccurate on the details of the case. I wanted to meet in person to go over the case which included photos that I printed, plus a video. He was doing everything he could to keep me on the phone and not meet in person. He never let me finish talking, but finally agreed to meet. I found out that I could tell him to file a motion to withdraw my case. He was obligated to do so and the judge approved it.

Squire represented me on an extremely nuanced case and completely failed to come up with any sort of strategic defense. He doesn’t listen on phone calls and his written responses are akin to that of an unintelligible community college student. He’s a lazy lawyer, constantly late and unprepared, was often reprimanded by the presiding judge for his tardiness and lack of preparedness in court. Complete waste of time and money, would have been better off seeing to things myself and wish I would have. He’s not held in high regard by his own office and can’t tell you the last time he actually won a case that went to trial. Advice? Just retire already.

This attorney claims to be an expert in child custody matters, and states on his website that mediation with the other parent is important to the child's welfare (my paraphrasing). In fact, Mr. Cross encourages contention and strife between the opposing parties, uses the children as pawns in the divorce, refers to custody issues as the "custody battle"and even suggested that the "goal"of any custody fight is to "win, thus ensuring the custodial parent will get child support". While my now ex-spouse and I are no longer friends, we are, thankfully,a united front regarding our children, and we have agreed to never disparage each other to the children, to respect each other in our individual lives, and to reassure them through our behavior that their Mother and Father are no longer married to each other through NO fault of their own, I absolutely WOULD NOT recommend Mark Cross as a family law lawyer.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
