Mr. Mahoney was like no other laywer, and we had more than 10 we have hired since 2015. He saw right thru the lies. Best money spend ! In no better words but in these perfect words that I can say about today- he was a home run on my enforcement! Let him do this thing and don’t bother him, have your evidence organized and the timeline ready for him. Stay quiet, and listen. Thank you Mr. Mahoney! - Mr and Mrs Q

Lori Is Amazing. She is an absolute beast in the courtroom, because of her years as a detective and as an attorney, she knows the questions to ask, and how to draw the answers out of people. My divorce was a long drawn out nightmare because of the opposing attorney, they tried every dirty trick in the book, delay after delay, even resorted to try and bankrupt me by filing motion after motion thus having us appear in court time and time again. Lori never faltered. She stood by my side, believed in me, was compassionate, seemingly always a step ahead of the opposition, and in the rare occurrence of a father being awarded primary custody, because of Lori, I am one of those rarities. I see some people complaining about not being able to get ahold of Lori, but know that she really is always in court or trials. If it’s urgent, her paralegals, specifically Kim, will get back to you, especially if it’s an emergency. HOWEVER…something I want to stress to those complaining about reaching her, Lori gave me a great bit of advice from day one. She said “It my job to do the worrying, if I’m not worried, then you shouldn’t be. If the opposing side files something that makes me worried, then I will call you to get the info. The last thing you want to do, is blow up your bill with phone calls when you can easily email me what’s going on and submit anything of relevance or problematic” She gave me an outline of things to come, and tips on how to keep our bill down. (Keep in mind, everytime you call your attorney, it costs money. This is a business.) In short, contested divorces are brutal. Unfortunately it takes a lot of time, patience, and money, especially when the opposing council tried every nasty tactic in the book. Lori is a truth seeker, she did an amazing job at both our trials, she listens to your wants and gives you the reality of reasonable expectations, she is an absolute beast in the court room that was able to get info out in the open that I wasn’t even aware of. She was able to connect the dots, cross the T’s and provide proof to the judge to get us our victory. Thank you Lori, my awesome and ridiculously blunt paralegal Kim, Matthew, Janine, and the rest of the staff that helped me thru this difficult journey. I don’t know if I can even express in words the gratitude I have for all of you. Thank you all so very much.

Like others have said do not waste your time. She took the money and ran. I haven't spoken to the lawyer in 2 years. To be honest the lawyer probably doesn't exist anymore and the paralegals are forging her information at this point. Nothing gets done. Save your money please.

what a waste of time and money, this firm should be called LIERS not lawyer. This man call his clients a couple of days before their hearing to make sure they have money before taking any step forward. one of his family lawyers (Samantha Gonzales) did not know her head from her toe. I will not recommend them for baby sitting a child.

Mr. Ghuneim is the Judge in Arcola and if you do just a little research online, you will see how incredibly incompetently run Arcola Municipal is. Gwendolyn Tealer is really as bad as everyone here says. Wow. For anyone who goes in, watch out for this larger African American woman who really shouldn't be allowed to work in a court. I agree with the other reviewer, even a fast food job would fire her for this, but she is in charge of people's driving records? Based on these reviews, I did file a bar complaint against the Judge: Mo Ghuneim. We have clear evidence from the reviews alone that this Court is ruining people's records repeatedly, and I"m sure the Texas Bar will be very interested to find out what is happening in Arcola. I faxed over some information to get my case resolved after Ms. Tealer asked me to send it over. Months later, it still hadn't been resolved. I called again, Ms. Tealer had taken no action, and I suppose feeling defensive, brought 'the attitude' out. Ms. Tealer is one of these people who isn't much at her job, so makes up for it with attitude. When I spoke to her on the phone the 3rd time, I felt that I had to go extra slow for her to understand, and that she may have been drunk like one of the other reviewers said, just realy low-class behavior. I don't expect much from someone like Ms. Tealer, but I do expect more from the Judge and the Texas Bar, and have reported Mr. Ghuneim for this incompetence in Arcola.

Beyond the worse lawyer I have had in my years of going to court. He is rude always wants things to be his way if you try explaining things to him he starts yelling threatening to drop you as a client. He works alone so everything he had to file would take weeks so it prolonged the case more. My case lasted almost two years and nothing was done I had to email him each month asking for updates and all he would say is waiting on reply for AG or the other attorney but no movement. I asked to go to trial finally because I was tired of the run around with him and other lawyer for months so he dropped me as a client because that’s was going to be too much work for him. So now that I’m talking to Lawyers to hire for this case they look into it and tell me he did nothing for my case and it should had been finished a long time ago meaning I paid him to just go to court and have resets. If you are looking for someone to represent you this man is the wrong person to do so he can’t even remember half the the things you tell him I have proof of everything I’m saying and I’m so upset he wasted my time and money on him.

Bernie is smart, kind, and aggressive in court. He got us everything my husband was asking for. We are truly grateful for everything he and his staff have done for us. Throughout both cases, Mr. Aldape was the epitome of professionalism and demonstrated his vast knowledge and expertise in family law. He was always honest, straightforward, and dedicated to getting the best outcome for me and my family. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, I won both cases. As my review states this attorney is a very smart attorney, but he is very lazy and really unorganized he will lose your evidence because he has no secretary. he will never return your calls until the day before court then he will submit a bill to you that reflects all of this work that he has been doing but it is a lie because he just starts blowing your phone up the night before your court date. he will take all your money and give you no receipts until you ask 100 times then he will throw one together that will eat all of your retainer and reflect that you owe him a couple grand more.....then he will hound you until you pay him then you will not here from him again until the night before court again he is always unprepaired !

Hired this guy several years ago .. I recently found out the work he did for me wasn’t worth the paper it was written on. I reached out to him about the problem . I told him he should fix this screw up free of charge ..He focused on the free of charge. I never heard back from him.. I felt like since he didn’t do it right it the first place and I paid him back then that he should fix it free of charge .. I hired a new lawyer that knew what he was doing and he was able to fix the mess this guy left me with.. If you hire him just be warned his screw ups might come back to bite you in the butt later on …He never even apologized !!!!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
