Joe wins cases... He is a shark in the courtroom. He wins because he has three gifts that other attorneys wish they had; CONFIDENCE, Joe is willing to go to trial and fight for his clients. He doesn't back down in trial, or in settlements, because Joe has a long history of winning really tough cases. INTELLIGENCE, Joe is on top of the every change and technicality in the Law, he wins many cases before they even go to trial because he is willing to put in the hard work and do the pre trial motions and hearings that many attorneys are unwilling to do. CHARISMA, Joe is the cool kid in the court room. He draws everyone in when he speaks. The jury wants be on Joe's team.. and that means they are on your team. Joe won my case, he saved me from having to do 10 years in prison for a crime I wasn't guilty of. I couldn't have had a better attorney fighting for me.

Mr. Charlton took what most would consider to be a losing case where essentially, it was law enforcement and their family members vs a convicted felon. He listened to the us and worked diligently to investigate facts. He never pushed his client to take a deal, he presented options and followed our wishes, even when there was very little hope. With a show of force from the police in the court room against us he took the case to trial in superior court. We could not be happier with the level of tenacity he showed - he objected left and right and made the prosecutor pissed and flustered. He did his homework and it showed. His objections were sustained way more often than over-ruled. This gentleman knows his stuff and he is not afraid to use it! In a jury trial in an uphill battle - he WON! He did a fantastic job and most of all was super respectful. I've worked with other defenders that were complete jerks and spoke to me like i was a six year old and owed them something. I highly recommend Scott Charlton. I can't thank him enough!

When I got a DUI, I was devastated. I had no prior convictions, and had no idea what to do or where to turn. I was scared and had no experience at all with the law. I am so grateful that I turned to Mr. Davies as my lawyer. From the very beginning of the process, he was clear, concise, and understanding. He never sugar-coated anything, and was extremely thorough in every aspect of my DUI case. While he made no promises, he was confident that he could reduce my conviction. He helped me every step of the way, (even personally indemnifying the impound company that was holding my car for any liability so that they could release the car to me...and did this while he was on vacation!), and he was always available for any questions I had. He made me feel safer and less anxious, and in the end, everything he promised was realized. My conviction was reduced, and as a result my penalties were drastically reduced as well. I highly recommend Mr. Davies. He's exceptional--has the experience, knowledge, and contacts within the county to get the job the done, and always with the client's best interests first and foremost.

Even working pro bono. He is the best lawyer I've ever had. I'm a convicted felon, with multiple d.u.I.'s. I was treated with dignity and respect, despite my flaws. It gave me the desire to change my life around. He's as good as it gets. Creme de la creme.

Joe is a great Attorney in a corrupt system! He will definitely get you the best deal possible when bargaining with the prosecutors. Whatever he charges PAY IT it will be worth it. Although I am happy and grateful that I didn’t have to see Joe in a trial setting, I can only assume that his performance would be impressive at the very least! His persona and demeanor show charisma, real talent, and a demand for respect in a courtroom. I’ve known Joe for almost 10 years and I would not recommend anyone else for representation. His Secretary Rocks too I feel bad that I can’t remember her name at this time.

I'm disabled, limited money, and on the straight & narrow.. trying to live my life free of my previous troubles with WA legal system... When filling out the form for the background check to purchase a legal firearm, I said that I hadn't been in a 'psychiatric' facility as an adult,.. but it turns out I had turned 18 just a few days prior to the psych. Facility! Julie came to my rescue, was with me and had helped me through this every step of the way...., even now when I got a summons for a review hear after 2 yrs(which she both asked & got the judge and prosecutors approval, stating that if I didn't receive any new charges during the 2yr unsupervised probation, I WOULD NOT have to come back to the Clallam County District Court! I'm disabled, on SSI, I've got severe Social Anxiety & Panic Disorder in public, (Which are all okay, & I'm stable on my meds for the majority of the time, plus my new Service Dog in Training Chattam is a huge help, or he will be but he's in the process of training!) Julie was & is still doing a great job..., shes very caring and understanding, so when I received a summons, out of the blue -so 2 speak.. yesterday, regarding my case from 2 yrs ago, requesting that I appear for a review hearing,... Even after she had gotten me permission to not have to come back to court if I didn't get in trouble again..., and I contacted Julie immediately, and she is on it .., she said she is going to figure it out for me, and I'm once again so greatly appreciative for her skill, level of care & empathy, and her drive to take care of her clients in the best most beneficial way she can!

You get what you pay for, and I ended up paying much less than I anticipated or wanted to with this attorney. There's a reason for that. I should've known I was in trouble when his disgruntled secretary quit the first week I hired him. Over the four months we worked together, he did nothing for my case. My ex-wife and her attorney were actively taking my children and money, while this guy was intent on simply "managing his client." He asked me to be patient, and I now realize it was his way of saying you're the last in line. He had $6K in retainer money that just sat there while he claimed he was negotiating terms for settlement--ruining my chances of actually settling. After threatening to fire him because he'd disappeared for several weeks, he quit, claiming he and his family had Covid. Then I went on to represent myself and gain orders that benefited my case, when he'd told me this wouldn't ever happen. Good luck with this guy, Maybe he'll actually work to fight for you and your family. He sat by and watched while mine was being destroyed.

Noah has represented me in Criminal, Dependency, and Family court. I've has quite a few lawyers over the last decade and he is, by far, the one that I felt helped me the most. What I appreciate about him the most was that he was realistic. In the privacy of his office he would level with me, discuss possible outcome, worst case, best case, ect. He would make sure that I fully understand the situation so that there were no surprises. No matter how bad/good the case looked he would never push me into making a decision. He would give it an honest try for anything that I was asking in court. Very happy with his performance and would defiantly recommend him.

I received a questionable speeding ticket on Highway 101 this summer driving back to Kitsap County from Sequim. Noah was recommended to me by a friend. Noah did a wonderful job and got the ticket dismissed. I drive a lot for work and having a clean driving record is very important to me. I would highly recommend Noah for any speeding tickets.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
