Although I didn't get to receive services from Scott due to financial reasons, my meeting with him was very straight forward confident and promising. Scott's confident in his work, and can tell he takes pride in it. Although I was not directly represented by Scott I will be referring him to anyone who needs legal trouble. His attention to detail and work ethic radiate and shows his presence in or out of court.

Right out of the shoot, Scott listened so well that he retained the details and facts for quite a length of time as the case drug out, only due to pandemic. Scott is knowledgeable enough with the laws that on the fly was able to cite a precedence to allow a brand new piece of evidence on the record. I was also happy that Scott does not try and take advantage with the charges. Very Very Fair. Naturally, Scott won the case.

Scott is an impressive attorney, as is his associate, Steve. Both have been very effective in my custody case and have exhibited the utmost professionalism and attention to detail in a complex case. I'd readily retain Scott and his firm in any future litigation or legal matters. He is well worth his price, which is fair and reasonable. Scott truly cares about his clients and will bring to bare his extensive experience, expertise and focused will to represent your best interests.

"Thank you can honestly say that I was very happy with everyone at the firm and feel like you all were able to get me exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you to each and everyone of you for making me feel like a person and not just someone to collect money from. I can't say enough how happy I am that I was referred to this law firm and that everyone I dealt with was unbelievable nice and professional."

I hired Mr. Van Der Snick for several traffic tickets a few years ago and he was able to save my license from being suspended, as I had too many tickets on my record. I then hired him last year for a DUI charge that I received in Kane County. I had to wait to get an appointment with him, but it was WELL WORTH THE WAIT! Mr. Van Der Snick is an AMAZING attorney. He was able to get my DUI charges dismissed, which I never thought to be possible. He not only answered all my questions clearly and precisely, his staff also made sure to notify me of every court date by letter and by phone call. His staff is very professional and friendly! They are always there to answer your questions if the attorney is in court. I would recommend Brick to any family or friend that I have who is in need of an attorney.

I used Mr. Vandersnick who came highly recommended to me from a great law firm! I was amazed at the way his office worked. They were always so pleasant in my difficult time and really were down to earth people who worked well together. The outcome was amazing and he was always on my side! He is not your "normal" attorney! Jordan and Kelly are huge assetts to this attorney and I can't say enough thanks for the work they put into my case. Always informed me of everything that was going on. I never had to contact them in order to find out where the process was on my case. It was a horrible situation made into a good experience simply because they cared! The outcome was something I am still shaking my head wondering how it turned out as it did! I would definitely recommend Mr. Vandersnick for any DUI case. I am forever in debt to this man for all the hard work and results he has provided me. He gave me hope when I had thought all hope was gone! All I can say is that I made the right decision to hire Mr. Vandersnick and completely happy with the service I was provided. I haven't one negative thing to say in regards to his team in the office and his ability to work magic in the court room! Thank God for attorneys as himself! :) "It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others." Dalai Lama

there is no star option. When Peter Follenweider took my case pro bono I thought I won a lottery as I could not afford a lawyer when my husband filed for divorce. I was misrepresented by Peter and I still wonder what is the connection between him and the judge. My sister in law wrote to me: You have been validated. You got screwed. I don’t know what more I can say. I was left by my husband in Poland with 2 small children with no job no money no housing still the judge did not award me any alimony. All this with the permission and on the watch of Peter. He did not fight for my justice at all. I am in late 50's with no assets. I do not have my own house. I have many medical issues that effect my earning while my ex enjoys 5000+ VA benefits a month tax free with his lover. His disabilities are supposedly PTSD but he is absolutely fit and healthy. n my opinion his disabilities are a hoax. Stay away from Peter Follenweider. He ruin my life. I look with fear in the next year as my salary of 1000 USD a month is just enough to rent studio. I do not have a car.

Wow, let me share the experience I just had during my "free consultation" phone call this morning. I called to see if I had a legal standing about a HOA covenant that is in question. The attorney started by asking if I wanted free advice or am I looking for a lawyer, to which I responded "I don't know, that's why I'm calling, to see if anything can be done.". Then, he's like "What's the issue?". After telling him the issue, he basically went off, stating "I can't help you, they can do whatever they want, and he'd have to review all the documents", and then loudly, "I can't do that for free!." First, I had never asked him to do that for free, and I responded with "I would've been happy to pay you to review the documents, but given the poor experience on this call, I'll go elsewhere, thank you.". This guy must have been having a really bad morning! I wish I had the audio so everyone could hear how rude he was. Stay away from this firm...

Molly & her team are extremely organized, responsive and were on top of our file! Our closing hit some road bumps due to late requests/delayed processing on the lenders side but Molly handled the needed extension professionally and pushed our lender to process our application in order to protect us as her clients but also of course get the sale closed for the sake of the sellers as well! Highly recommend using Spring Law for your real estate needs.

I went through a very long and challenging unique divorce case and process. I started with one lawyer then represented myself for a bit and then found Mr. Goldie. He took my case when no one else would! He heard me right from the start on what was important to me and what I was looking to accomplish! He met me exactly where I was at, he stuck with me during a very stressful time and encouraged me to hang in there every time I wanted to just give up! I have to say being in this as long as I have, speaking with as many lawyers as I have, sitting at the court house as many times as I have, overhearing and listening to so many of them. Mr. Goldie is one of the few lawyers with integrity!!! That to me went way further than any experience or “show” in the courtroom or sly negotiations I witnessed. Mr. Goldie worked with me and treated me as part of the team. He was continually patient with me even when I was difficult and I know I was often! He showed empathy for me through every situation! “It’s not personal” isn’t true in divorce, it is a very hard time for the two people going through it and their families! Even though it’s just another day at the office for a divorce attorney, I never felt Mr. Goldie didn’t get it! He treats each case as separate and unique giving them the attention they need. If Mr. Goldie didn’t know an answer he found it, if he believed we needed to add to our team he brought on great advisors. Mr. Goldie was great in my case and he will continue to be even better in this profession because he is actually looking out for his clients and never gives up on them! He is honest, personable, professional and reasonable!

Mr. Medina recently helped me with my court case and I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the outcome. Mr. Medina always returned my calls in a timely manner (even on weekends) and would thoroughly address all my questions and concerns. In court, he was very professional and courteous - he explained everything to me along the way to make an otherwise unpleasant experience into a smooth one which ended up saving me time and money! I can't thank him enough.

I contacted Matt after trying to work through an issue for my son. We anticipated potential legal charges. Matt got right back to me, explained what scenarios I might face and made me feel very comfortable that if I needed to hire him he would do the absolute best job to protect my son. Once we heard back from the police I contacted Matt to give him an overview. He explained what to expect going forward and refused payment even after I offered. Although I hope to never need him again, I know Matt is the guy I will call first.

Michael Lenert and team. My family and I sincerely appreciate your endeavors for ensuring our pain of the past six years had not been forgotten. When six (6) previous attorneys were either too lazy or simply failed to care to honor our case, you and your firm not only showed a high level of professionalism and empathy, you maintained effective communication with us each step of this journey. Thank you. Thank you. You are certainly an asset we would utilize again if the situation warrants a legal professional you emulate.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
