In the winter of 2024, I was unjustly charged with 6 felonies which were concocted by a vengeful group of bad players. Brilliant defense lawyer, Bill Makler, dedicated himself to extricating me from this precarious farce.
Like the proverbial dog with a bone, Bill unrelentingly pursued my case for months, ricocheting between courts and behind-the-scenes legal negototiations. Due to Bill's vast knowledge of the law, masterly legal strategies and undeniable tact, my charges were reduced to two benign misdemeanors.
In a word, he made a miracle happen.

Greg McMurray was a great find! A lawyer with impeccable credentials, known and respected by local lawyers and judges, with an approachable communication style that puts the client at ease while still conveying all the important information, extremely knowledgeable about the law, and experienced in how best to advocate for his clients. I wish I had found him sooner! He is worth every penny (saved me lots of money in the end). I would have used him in my family law case if I had known about him earlier.
Greg defended me in a criminal case that resulted in all charges being dropped and my record left clear. It was a result that I deserved, but didn't believe I would receive. Mr. McMurray was my lawyer back in December of 2010 when I was arrested by the SB County Sheriff's department. I won't go into details, but I was in serious trouble and looking at some time behind bars.
In short I began to turn my life around I got myself into some local programs to deal with my personal problems. Taking Mr. McMurray's advice I worked hard to improve my situation. Mr. McMurray was truthful and helpful through the entire process, including giving me a payment plan option which helped a lot. Because legal trouble can be expensive outside of hiring a lawyer. He went to bat for me with the DA and the Judge because I fulfilled my promise to keep myself on track. I ended up avoiding jail time all together and I haven't looked back since. Alcohol was a part of my story and I've been sober ever since in part due to Mr. McMurray and his work on my behalf. Simply put he was my advocate and he helped me present my case as someone who needed help, got it and then as someone who needed a chance to make good and I can happily say he got me a second chance.

After receiving a subpoena to testify in a criminal case, I hired Steve. Although I wasn't called, he was there, and explained everything I needed to know. Doug was upfront with me from our initial consultation and saw my cxase through from beginning to end. Unlike many other criminal defense attorneys, Doug doesn't try and pull this "extra fee required if you are held to answer after your Prelim Hearing." When he quotes you your fee, that is the fee regardless of whether your case goes to trial or is settled beforehand. Doug gets the job done and is nothing but honest and upfront with his clients all the way. I highly recommend him to anyone who finds themselves in legal trouble here in Santa Barbara.

My ex-spouse and I pretty much agreed on almost everything, but there were few minor details that we needed to iron out. Matthew was referred to us by a mutual friend and we were happy with the outcome. There was never any arguing and Matthew was a great resource for us. Bob was handled our case for my daughter who was injured in a car accident. We were basically satisfied with the work, however based on how Bob explained his fee structure to us, we felt that we were lied to and cheated. We tried to have an honest discussion with Bob-it didn't go very well. It is our opinion that we caught Bob in a lie when he told us his assistant Wendy was in the conference room when he explained the fee structure percentage. My family is positive Wendy was not there- so obviously why Wendy would not confirm to us that she was present. We are hopeful that Bob will have the professional integrity and make this right.

Whenever you think about retaining a criminal defense attorney review their track record first and whether they have successfully defended their clients. In Josh’s case, in the major criminal cases he has defended, he hasn’t defended one client successfully in trial. Instead, what you’ll see is his clients pleading to often unfavorable terms—making the DA’s job that much easier while earning attorney fees.
In 2010 Josh unsuccessfully ran for District Attorney. Following his lost he was subsequently fired from his position as a result of his behavior. This is all public record. Josh still remains in close contact with the same prosecutors who supported him during his election run; some whom he should be opposing in representing you his client. All of this remains an inherit conflict of interest.
Recommend considering criminal defense attorneys who have a successfully track record of going to bat for the clients.

I had hired a more senior lawyer to handle my divorce case against a well-heeled and rapacious (now ex) spouse. When this attorney took an unexpected leave for medical reasons, Morgan (then Nix, not Hoover) took over my case. Not sure if it was her burdened case load or her inexperience in dealing with predatory opponents, but she was cold, unimaginative, and unsympathetic throughout our time working together. While she answered emails and handled communications "efficiently," on the day of our 11.5-hr-long mediation session (over Zoom), she deferred almost entirely to the forensic accountant the law firm had hired, and when their legal strategy failed to elicit the mediating judge's sympathy, Morgan had no "Plan B." She then put the burden of negotiating and decision making entirely on me, even though I was clueless and emotionally ill-equipped for shouldering it, especially after 9 hrs of mediation. My settlement ended up being 40% less than what she and the accountant had claimed they could get for me. I feel she failed to truly invest in getting to know my case or me (though she had enough time to do so), and afterwards, when I expressed
disappointment in the lower settlement, she pushed back in a very unprofessional way and refused to take any responsibility, blaming me for agreeing to the settlement. Based on her results and "bedside manner," in my case I would give her 1 star at best, but will up it to 2 because she promptly answering emails.
