The best for family law representation. I had a high conflict divorce case involving children— Brandon and Sylvia were amazing, diligent and intelligent. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my case.

The statue of Iustitia at the front office Brandon’s office is not there just for decor. I was in the worst predicament of my life—feeling hopeless, lost, angry, tired, anxious and wishing I never said the words “I do”—when I first laid eyes on this sculpture as I waited for my consult appointment with Brandon. I had to change from a previous attorney due to many issues that complicated my divorce. Doubtful but persistent with my search of a good counsel against my ex-husband’s, I slowly gained confidence after my first meeting with Brandon. That day, Brandon’s team met me with empathy and compassion. His paralegals Ashley and Keith, and associate attorney Brittany, were all superb. All their communication with me were full of care touching on sensitive subjects related to the case which they handled with utmost grace and professionalism. Brandon fought for my case and was an exceptional litigator. Not only is he a remarkable attorney when it comes to litigating a case, he is also an extraordinarily fair human being. I’m beyond grateful for the services of the Law Offices of Brandon Sua and I highly recommend his practice to those seeking real justice.

I was referred to Brandon after leaving my old attorney due to lack of progress and spending lots of money…..with minimal results. Not only that, I was done feeling like I was the “back burner” client. When I went to Brandon, I had about 10 percent visitation with my son, a crappy agreement with my ex-wife (completely favoring the mother) and very little money left to retain another attorney. Brandon and his team took me in, saw my love for my son, gave me an affordable service, and put together a great case. I also felt a huge difference with them as far as client/attorney relationship. They fought hard for me and helped me gain 50% custody of my son. As well as help resolve numerous issues I had with my ex-wife. One of the best days of my life was the day I was granted equal custody of my little boy. It could not have been done without Brandon and his skilled team. They were diligent and compassionate and we were totally successful in and out of the courtroom. My son is almost four years old now and unfortunately court has been necessary in order for him to be in my life. When a mother goes out of her way to prevent the bonding of a father and his son, you need support and you need professionals. I plan to keep the Sua team on my side for many years to come. Not just for my son, but I feel confident that Brandon and the whole crew will be there for me if other things ever come up where I need some solid representation. I know one day my son will be just as thankful as I am for the results we got.

Our experience with Jennifer Monroe was incredible! She was always well prepared, and would listen to our suggestions and concerns. Our case involved a juvenile felony charge. We were very worried and concerned. Jennifer was always professional, always compassionate, and always available to us, as we journeyed through this ordeal. Because this was our first time with this kind of experience, we had lots of questions which she answered thoroughly as many times as we needed her to. In the end, because of her knowledge and experience, we had a favorable outcome. I would highly recommend Jennifer Monroe!

Jennifer Monroe is a very detailed oriented lawyer. She took my case when others didn't think I had any chance of winning and they wanted me to plea bargain. But Jennifer believed in me and my story and took the time to research the paperwork of my case. I appreciate all that she did for me and would highly recommend her. Thank you to a real professional.

Hiring Dallara Law was the worst choice we ever made. We were told the case would be simple. It lasted 14 months and cost thousands more than anticipated. Never made it to court they negotiated the case which is not what we asked for. GO TO MEDIATION if you have a family law case. Do not waste your money having them do the exact same thing.

Unprofessional and Unresponsive. I hired mark to handle a divorce case for me. In the beginning he was responsive and helpful. After I paid him in full he stopped responding and failed to show up to a hearing. He would not respond to inquiries for months. My divorce is ready to be settled but he failed to respond for almost 5 months. I didn't even know if he was still working for me. Mark essentially took my money and failed to help me finish my divorce. I'm now out the money I gave him and handling my divorce on my own. I do not recommend this attorney.

He's really understanding and helpful. He went above and beyond to help me with my case and knew exactly what to do to fix the problem. It also probably helps a lot that he knows the people at court well and has a professional friendly relationship with them. Thanks Mark! Its been over 3 years but its never too late for a compliment!

I retained Mark Hover in September of 2015 for a misdemeanor, driving with a suspended license (VC 14601.1), charge. At the time I retained Mark, I was without a license. For background I believe its worth mentioning that I work in healthcare, and at the time I retained Mark I was in the midst of starting a new position that would have been out of my reach if I was convicted of the misdemeanor that I was cited for. Healthcare and hospital background checks are notoriously thorough and critical. As my case developed it became clear that there are other hurdles to overcome, two other courts [in two different counties] to visit, and many miles to travel to do the legwork necessary [both in and out of court] to clear those hurdles. Because I did not have a license and I work full time, I was unable to do the physical legwork myself. Mark reassured me from the moment that I first spoke to him that he would do whatever is necessary to overcome those hurdles. Mark took care of all of my out of town court matters. He also resolved all of the loose ends tied other other cases and citations. Mark also made all of my local court appearances with me. He went out of his way to make sure I got back to work in a timely manner, and he drove to work after each court appearance as well. Mark was patient, compassionate, empathetic, and knowledgeable every step of the way. I felt at ease walking into the courtroom with him, and knowing that he was handling my legal matters. I work with top tier clinicians every day, and I cannot compliment, recommend, or praise a professional if they do not deserve it. That being said, I highly recommend Mark. He is a fantastic attorney and a wonderful person. As of yesterday, (thanks to Mark!) I have my license back and I am working at the hospital that I applied to when I hired Mark. Mark 100% followed through and exceeded my expectations. His competence and drive to serve his clients really really shines through. Perhaps also as important is that fact that his fee/rate for this matter was excellent. There were no surprises, he gave me a quote and stuck by it. His quote for my case was below the other attorneys’ I consulted with before retaining him. Mark also accepted my payment arrangement, which allowed me to keep up with my bills and not suffer undo financial burden. If you are in some legal trouble and you need help, then call Mark! I believe you will be in excellent hands. Should I need similar counsel again in the future, Mark will be the first person I call.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
