If you never had the "pleasure" of suddenly being served Divorce papers and you find yourself surprised, a bit lost, maybe locked out of your house, confused, in understandable shock, suddenly without money and blind-sided, I strongly recommend you go to M Kalil as soon as possible. He is very experienced and often has helped first-timers. Kalil is pragmatic and logical formost, saves you from MUCH extraneous nonsense by getting to the point and helping one navigate an impossible situation efficiently and to your benefit. The initial consultation is without charge but, better still, his experience and long-standing relationships with other lawyers and judges and local Courts makes your retainer fee go farther by avoiding legal dead ends and wasteful spending. Every dollar invested in his office saves you two more by avoiding unnecessary, wasteful motions and he is mission-focused on your best ultimate outcome. He will not hold your hand or wipe your tears (trust me, you don't want that kind of lawyer), but he will adopt your case in more of a feduciary sense with your solvency and goals as his goals. If you wish simply to resolve your legal Divorce issues and end up in the best position, use him. He's really good at it. His staff is experienced and has been working for him many years (ESPECIALLY Anne), his staff is top notch. If you are understandably sad or shook, ask him to recommend a therapist maybe, but if you wish simply to get your best outcome financially without nonsense or false leads, get him on your team soonest, please. In my experience, Kalil is an expert on mitigation and obtaining the best result for you personally in an impossible, terrible situation. Divorce produces NO winners, ever, but Kalil will find your path to resolution and place you in the least-bad situation for your benefit, blaze a path for you to stay solvent and hasten your best outcome so you can rebuild your life well. Again, one dollar spent with Kalil saves you many more by avoiding needless pitfalls and costly dead-ends with less experienced other local lawyers - I actually DID check them all out. I cannot recommend him enough. This, from a skeptical first time divorcee, University graduate, professional, NOT a lawyer-fan in general. Name is Anthony, and you're welcome.

Christopher helped me with my speeding ticket. Instead of me getting 4 violation points and huge speeding ticket he was able to convert it to "1Opening and closing vehicle doors" ticket. So, I paid lesser for ticket and got 0 violation points. Besides, Christopher was extremely responsive and transparent throughout the whole process. Highly recommend!

I don't even know where to begin to explain how grateful we are we hired Chris Pelli. My husband & i went to several consultations with different attorneys trying to find one that we felt that really understood our case, one who showed compassion, drive, professionalism, knowledge, & we were blessed to find Chris he treated with the utmost respect, he showed full interest in our case. At all times we felt very confident in our decision to hire Chris, we didn’t any promises, he simply shared his knowledge & we felt like he was the right person to take on our case! & time after time he showed us that we had made the right decision. I would absolutely recommend Chris to anyone who’s looking for an attorney in his field!

Ricardo looked into our case without mentioning anything about fees. He investigated with the courthouse and determined it was a clerical error, and obtained proof of the same. He refused to accept compensation for his troubles. There are still some great people in the world, who believe in paying it forward!!

We have had Ricardo Mauro as a lawyer since we first closed on our house in 2008. Due to his friendly and knowledgeable demeanor and his office assistant Sarah we have worked with him several times since. He really cares about people and their situations and is not all about the dollar. He has given us valuable advice for free when we needed it on a few occasions as well. Thank you Rick and team! We appreciate you!

Where do I begin? My experience with Mr. Mauro began by dealing with Sara, his paralegal. What a peach she is!!! She made me feel right at ease in dealing with my speeding ticket I got while on a vacation to Old Forge. I am a commercial driver so I could not afford to have points on my record. I did a search and found him on line. Not knowing who you are calling when you live in Virginia and having to deal with the legal system in NY can be daunting to say the least but Sara was so easy and confident in who she was and how she handled everything. So professional but yet caring. One hopes they never need legal assistance again but if the need arises...well.... I will just get to talk to Sara again ;>) Oh yes and by the way....no points on my record and a mild fine was the settlement of my heavy foot. Thanks Ricardo.

I like when an attorney isn't for the court and represents the client the best of her ability. Mrs. Talerico did an excellent job with representing me in front of Judge Skane..thank you. If you need an attorney she is the best at what she does, and she will do her best. This attorney was court appointed, either way she is nice, does her job. Thank you!! Satisfied client.

I had some probation trouble and I hired tony laface. He was forgetful and acted as if he just didn't care. I went to jail and my friend was facing a major federal trial for marijuana who also had laface. Long story short the judge and da wouldn't listen to him or reason with him. My friend lost property and was sentenced to ten years with the help of laface. Needless to say I felt hopeless and doomed. I hired David and within 2 weeks I was free and the new charges where dismissed. I really cannot thank mr. longeretta enough of praise him enough. He was the only one who actually cared and had the power to do something with the mess I was in.

William Roth has many times been the light at the end of a dark tunnel for me. I have never in my life met an Attorney that takes a better handle on a case than him. Not only is he thorough, but he is also honest with what he does and when you have him as a lawyer, you can sit with confidence in knowing that he is doing whatever he can to help you. No matter what the scenario, you can count on him to be upfront and honest, without judgement. He has always handled any case he has represented me for with extreme care and if you ask me what is the first thing that pops into my head when I hear the words “excellent representation”, It would be William Roth.

This office was responsible for my mortgage paperwork, and largely messed up the amount to be held back for school taxes and then emailed me a couple months later to just casually send them a check for over $1500, as if I didn’t just purchase a house and expect that they had already taken care of the tax amounts properly. Horrible experience and now I am not financially sound right before the holidays. Not sure how a law office that manages mortgage paperwork was not aware that STAR credit is no longer applied directly to tax amounts…

Mr. Policelli is a horrible attorney. He never called us to keep us updated on our matter. When we would call him he was nver available, and blamed his staff for it. Finally when we wanted to express to him how we felt about the matter, he yelled at us and said Im the lawyer I know best and there is nothing more to that. He made us feel very used and robbed because he was not the attorney we first met with (any-longer), and we paid him a lot of money to do what he felt he was very confiddent in doing.

Frank was all talk and no action - very disappointing. When it came down to litigating my case with important information that shaped the rest of my life, he folded. His cross examining skills were weaker than I expected someone with his huge ego to have. He never carried out his so called action plan on how the said he was going to win the case and it ended up costing me. He didn't prepare appropriately, put the defendant on the stand without preparation, which is a huge risk and it back fired. He wasn't aware of a hearing that took place and was completely unprepared. He loves to hear himself talk and completely disregards the concerns and needs of the client. He prepared me for a solid defense and litigation with the AUSA, and never carried through which was stunning to watch. For all of the money we paid him, he did not meet expectations.

One thing you have to remember, when you have a court appointed lawyer, working for you, which was the case here, no matter what kind of a defense he offers, he still gets paid. I had been offered a deal, from a lawyer that I had previously hired and he went with that. He never offered to do any work on the case and let the previous deal stand, so my being given him as an attorney, was only so the court could say that I had legal representation, in fact I could have represented myself and got just as far. If you are in trouble and have money for a lawyer, shop around, as you want the best representation as possible, for your money, especially if the offense is very serious at all.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
