Over a year ago I began one of the hardest journeys I have ever walked!! Fighting for custody in the state of Virginia as a father is a lot more difficult than you could ever imagine. Throughout the process I had 3 attorneys. By the time I got to Mike I had almost lost all hope. He was very knowledgeable in the entire process and he was very patient with me. He spent more time and effort than the other two attorneys combined. He was extremely helpful with making me aware of the entire process, and gave stellar advise that eventually allowed the final win for my son!! He was very attentive to my case and clearly worked with passion. I would recommend him a million times over!! Hopefully I will never need him again, but if I did, he would absolutely be my first call!! I cannot thank him enough for saving my sons life!!

He would return phone calls promptly and answer the myriad of questions that I had. I would use Mr. Hyman without hesitation if in need of any type of law he practices without hesitation.

Mr. Pristera gave me a voice as a sexual assault victim. The Army Reserve was drowning me in an endless sea of lost paperwork and delays for two years with no answer or end in sight. Mr. Pristera knew exactly who to contact and what actions to take in response to my command's cover-up and the Army reserve staff's incredible incompetence. Mr. Pristera will not let you be ignored.

Look, if you’re sitting there reading reviews for military defense lawyers, then something is your life has gone awry. I’ll save you some time and sanity. Spend the money. Hire Mr. Pristera. You’re about to go through some challenging times. Maybe you made a mistake, maybe your innocent. But know this… the military that you loved is about to try and screw you. I was referred to him by a colleague, and he did not disappoint. Brian is smart, talented, and fights for you. He was always available and always made me feel like I was a priority. He didn’t make me feel stupid for asking questions or being scared. He was empathetic to what I was going through and was honest and realistic about what we could expect. The flat-fee seemed a little steep at first, but it was well worth it, and I probably came out ahead. He saved my sanity and possibly my career.

Mr. Turbeville represented me on two different charges, a misdemeanor and a felony which occured in Williamsburg. He went to great lengths to ensure the best possible outcome for both of my charges. Several years before he also represented me on another misdemeanor charge. I would recommend Mr. Turbeville over any other attorney in the area. Thanks to Mr. Turbeville I have no criminal record.

Mr. Birocco provided a defense that gave me confidence in my case that eventually went favorably for me. After telling him my side, we went over the police report together and he noted everything which was contrary to my report. He was very resourceful in filing motions, and was bold in confronting the officer about the report during my hearing. We met several times over my case and I was informed by him every step of the process. He offered me his professional opinion but always let me decide how we would proceed. In the end, my charge was dismissed at trial as a result of a motion "to suppress" that mr. birocco filed. Even though we were prepared for trail, I didn't have to be tried because his efforts in filing motions came through for me. I recommend birocco to anyone who feels your rights have been violated, or you have to prove your innocence, or you want the best representation for your guilt.

Mr. Kelley was recently my attorney. I cannot express enough how thrilled I am with the job that he did on my behalf. During the many months that he represented my interests, he proved to be highly versed in the law, trustworthy, of great moral/ethical character, and a no-nonsense kind of guy. He kept me updated throughout court proceedings and didn’t leave me with any unanswered questions. I always felt like he was in my corner and that he was going to fight tooth and nail to get the best outcome for me...which he did! I’ve often joked that he is a shark of an attorney among minnows. I am so thankful that I had him as my attorney because he is a definite winner! If you ever need an attorney, do yourself a favor and hire the absolute best...Mr. Pat Kelley. We were extremely disappointed by the service provided by Susanna Hickman. She and her paralegal made basic, repeated mistakes. We had to correct her on how to spell our legal names and who the co-trustees were approximately seven times. In the end, she missed a big problem with our need to adjust a trust that we had explained repeatedly and cost us at least $500 for work we shouldn't have needed. We are having another lawyer check her work because we lack any faith in her judgment and ability. We recommend you go elsewhere.

INEFFECTIVE COUNSELING DIDN’T DO ANYTHING IN THE CASE. ALL HE FUD WAS TAKE EVERY PENNY WE HAD AND RUIN MY FAMILY LIFE. HE WILL JUST TAKE YOUR CASE FOR YOUR MONEY. WE HAD MADE A HUGE MISTAKE HIRING THIS LAWYER. HE DIDN’T EVEN FIGHT THE CASE NOT EVRN WITH LITTLE OR MUCH AGGRESSIVENESS . WHEN I SAY INEFFECTIVE COUNSELING IT SAYS IT ALL. IF YOU LOOK GOR MORE REVIRWS IN OTHER PAGES YOU WILL FIND MORE INFORMATION ABOUT CASES SND I WISHED I HAS SEEN THEM BEFORE I WOULDN’T HIRED HIM. HE DOESN’T EVEN DRESS UP LIKE A LAWYER AND HE DON’T EVEN SPEAK IN COURT TO DEFEND YOU NOT EVEN USE EVIDENCE IF YOU HAVE ANY. LIKE I SAID NO HELP AND INEFFECTIVE COUNSELING . I SPOKE TO ANOTHER LAWYER OF ANOTHER STATE AND GOT CONFIRMATION THAT ALL HE DID WAS TAKE MONEY AND DID NOTHING FOR US. LOOKING FOWARD TO HANDLE THIS SITUATION PAID HIM SO MUCH MONEY TO RUIN OUR LIFE AND LEAVING US BROKE WITH NO MONEY FOR NOTHING.

I totally appreciated Mr. Freeman positively giving me the hope I needed in such an unexpected and trying time that happened in my life. My experience with this lawyer is second hand as he was hired by a woman with a history of fraud and forgery to obtain a permanent protective order against me based on a string of lies she had concocted which had no basis and no police reports or evidence to prove. The judge very quickly denied the request as it was obvious to everyone in the room this woman was delusional at best. Mr. Freeman just stood there, seemingly dumb-founded as his client made statements that conflicted each other and were clearly not well thought out lies. I’m absolutely sickened that an attorney that has taken an oath to uphold the law would allow himself to be a part of a case such as this. He clearly took this case for the money and nothing else. I am a mom of 9 children who are all upstanding citizens. I have no criminal record, and am a leader in the community. I would never hire a lawyer with this kind of ethics. Disgusted!!!

If you want a person that is a child advocate, she is not the one. She's says she's for the betterment of the child but won't answer you emails (sent 3 months ago, no response), will not look at any evidence you present to incriminate the other party, will use what you tell her and actually use it as her own findings in her final report. If you are a unfit parent and it can be proven you are, then she is the one you want in your corner but if you are a parent that knows what their child needs/wants, I wish ya'll the best.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
