The team at Zalkind Duncan & Berstein, in particular, the attorney on my case, Ana Munoz, are phenomenal. Ana expertly navigated a challenging situation with grace, tireless professionalism and compassion. She helped me get my dignity back and for that I can never thank her enough. From the first phone call all the way to completion of the project, I knew Ana had my back and she worked diligently to help fight for me and my rights. If you're in the unfortunate position of needing of an attorney that specializes in employment law do not hesitate to reach out to them.

I worked with the Maura Greene Law Group (Francesca was the lead in my case) and I am so grateful that I used them during one of the most challenging times in my life. They were professional, responsive, provided strategic legal advice, and most importantly listened to my needs as a client. I trusted them/Francesca throughout the process and I truly thank them for everything they did for me and my family.

I mearly called for a consultation, I don't know whether this attorney was having a bad day or something else is going on or perhaps he was preoccupied, but the level of attention to detail on a potential case Even if he was listening at all, yes I understand you couldn't even take the case yet you have a tactfully poor representation of your law firm. Once again so we can be clear Yes I understand yes !!!!! I understand your not going to be able to take the case nor do you have to provide reason but asking a general question of what my options are , should have been handled more appropriately . you offer free consultation. I respect the type of attorney that you can hear in their voice no matter what the answer is They were delighted to handle your situation as best as they possibly could have. I call it having a good bedside manner. Yet I was brutally disconnected cut off and left hanging and I guess that's how you tell the difference between a solid lawyer that gives a crap about his clients potential clients and ones that are just ambulance chasers wanting to make a quick buck. There are millions of lawyers on this site And you should be truly grateful that people decided to hire you to take on their cases . Because if it wasn't for them you wouldn't even have a practice . I'm not angry. I've served my country for 8 years in the United States Navy and the college graduate with the background and engineering . An I studied quite a bit of law I felt like it was being put down or something . Although I laugh it off because I have thick skin , give you no excuse to represent yourself in the form and fashion that you represented yourself to me . I'm just offering constructive criticism to you sir. With all due respect work on your bedside manner because it's pretty crappy .I rest my case with the situation.

The lawyers at this office actually care. They listened to me. I say "they" because I actually had a couple lawyers at the office working on my case, including attorney Sullivan himself. Their team approach is great, and I know they all listened to me because in court the litigation team mentioned every single thing I told them I was concerned about, and in a very precise and professional way. I was amazed by how well they were in front of the Judge. Needles to say, I won my case. Incredible! Great Law firm!

I was referred to Jason through another attorney and let me tell you, I could not be more pleased. He did an amazing job helping me get guardianship for my 55yr old brother. I had been trying for a few yrs to get this task accomplished. Jason is very professional and compassionate, he truly understands how family's feel going through this rather tedious ordeal. Jason knows exactly what the courts need for all date sensitive documentation. He was always willing to help with calling the Dr. or going to pick up documents for me if need be. My brother and I are very pleased that its completed and safely filed away. I would highly recommend Jason to friends and family! Thank you again Jason!!

I don’t know what we would have done without Jason. My husband and I hired Jason to help us obtain guardianship for our disabled daughter who turned 18 years old this past December. From our initial meeting to help us understand what the guardianship process entailed, to our last meeting in court, Jason was an amazing resource and always so patient and understanding…no matter how many questions I had. My husband and I thought the final court appearance would be a simple formality, but unfortunately, we had a rather cold judge who made it a very unpleasant experience. Thanks to Jason’s calm, knowledgeable and professional demeanor with this judge, we were granted guardianship. We would highly recommend Jason as an attorney who is extremely smart, kind, and professional!

I am the representative payee for my adult disabled son. After five years of my son being disabled and collecting disability, his Doctor and I received a form to fill out for a medical review to see if he was "still disabled." I filled this out perfectly describing my son's day to day life and impairments. Although I am a medical professional, obviously I did not do this as well as I perceived as just before Christmas 2014, we received a notice stating my son was no longer disabled and his disability payments would stop in two months. Social Security was not at all helpful and gave me the run around re: the appeal process. Sometimes Social Security employees were not nice or helpful. I knew we needed help. I researched disability attorneys and found Jason. All I can say is "Thank God." He met with both of us and asked questions about my son's disability and symptoms. My son and I provided all the answers to the review to him however Jason worded it in the manner that SSDI requires, unlike what I had done in the previous summer. He was kind, patient, and understanding. There were a few times when my emotions got the better of me, "How can they do this to us?" These were the times when Jason stood behind us and helped us stand on our own two feet. He directed us in following the instructions on the appeal as they are not easy to understand, Jason understood exactly what they were and explained them in a manner that was both understandable and helpful, never degrading. On May 6th of this year, I received the notice from disability stating that after reviewing all the information, they found my son to continue to be disabled, therefore there was no need for a hearing. Of course I would prefer my son to not be disabled. However it is what it is and I do not even want to think of how awful this denial could have been without Jason. I wish I had known him and used him to initially get disability for my son back in 2009 as that process was not pleasant and took three denials/appeals. I definitely could not have done this without his help! My husband and I are now going to be using Jason for estate planning and our wills.

Attorney Itzkowitz represented me in a federal suit I filed against some major American corporations after I was raped on the grounds of an American owned hotel in the Cayman Islands 20 years ago. The case was poised to be a truly landmark case on many levels. At the zenith hour to the trial, it was settled out of court for a sum that helped me regain my life and belief in justice. I was literally homeless and had become disabled by my physical and psychic injuries. Although receiving no interest from the American press (except for a superb article in Layers Weekly) the settlement Mark facilitated made some global headlines. An article even appeared in newspapers in Japan. Mark Itzkowitz is a "super-lawyer" of Super Lawyers. His insight and brilliance regarding the international laws which impacted my case was astounding. Mark has also helped me in smaller family type matters since then. I have 100% confidence in Mark Itzkowitz's integrity and ability. 5 stars is not high enough praise.

Working with Joe Simons was the best decision I made for my Federal case in California. A process that took over 3 years from start to finish Joe walked me through each process. Constantly working with the prosecutor to get me a better deal all the way down to Probation. Joe is up front and honest with you from the beginning on what to expect and that made each moment easier to handle. Even flying out to California multiple times I knew I was in good hands. Joe was always there to answer any questions and even after sentencing he is still helping with technical aspects of probation. I 100% recommend Joe Simons and his Law firm. They will have your back throughout the whole process.

I have known Walter for around seven years or so. He is my "go to" attorney when it comes to any corporate matters. I find him responsive, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with. He gave me helpful advise when I had to respond to an overly zealous state auditor who had written up my firm for a minor matter that nonetheless had to be dealt with competently so that it did not become a major problem. He has provided similar assistance to several of my friends, and I recommend him highly.

Attorney Zachary Lown is honestly the best lawyer I’ve ever dealt with. Not only was he my lawyer, he was always there for me when friends and family weren’t. He changed my life. He helped me get out of a severe drug addiction and never judged me and was just there for me no matter what. Today I can say with his support, I managed to get myself clean, obtain a very good job, and I live a healthy and stable life. Sometimes a person with a traumatic background just needs someone we can trust and someone that will be there for you. Trust is huge! I trusted no one, not even him when we first began, but he earned my trust! This was not easy because I went through too much abuse and trauma to recount. If there’s anyone you can be honest with without feeling scared or worried, he is your attorney, hands down!!

I reached out to Zach who was Reccomnded though someone at Harvard law criminal justice department. I spoke to several other attorneys as well as Zach. Zach stands out compared to the 4 other attorneys I had consultations with. I called and he got back to me within the hour. I had a phone consultation with him about my case. He went above and beyond with out being asked. In our consult, and for several days following Zach continued to give me information I had never been presented before that could be the difference between winning and losing a case. This is all based on Zach’s experience, knowledge and research. He took the time and went far beyond the expectations of a consultation. He presented it from both sides and was able to play devils advocate well. Alone on his consult, I would highly Reccomnded Zach. There are many attorneys out there but there are few that put in the time and effort as Zach does.

Mr. John Sutherland is such a kind person. As a victim of Fidelity withholding my funds for over 4 months and gone through all channels of communication and complaint (Customer service, SEC, FINRA), I came desperately to Mr. Sutherland for help. He helped me assess my case and offered me advice to go to Secretary of State security division to pursue this and told me that it makes no sense to pay him and pursue a legal process as it will take a year. Eventually the problem was resolved. He is such a compassionate and caring person. He stands in client’s shoes to help them see from their perspective, except that I have never been his client, never paid him a dime. Would recommend him to everyone in need!

He explained the whole process to me, assisted with gathering the right documents and information, and answered all of my questions. On the day of the hearing, Patrick explained how the hearing would unfold and again answered all of my questions. Patrick is very knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I cannot recommend Attorney Scott Wittlin of Sassoon Cymrot Law LLC highly enough. Scott took the time to thoroughly educate my aunt and me on the intricacies of trusts, ensuring we understood every detail. His approach was refreshingly straightforward, empathetic, and professional. Having worked with many lawyers in the past, I often walked away feeling overcharged or underwhelmed. However, Scott is a true standout. He is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also deeply committed to serving the best interests of his clients. His transparency and dedication gave us peace of mind throughout the process. If you’re looking for an attorney who combines expertise with genuine care, Scott Wittlin is the one to call.

I have been a long term client of Thornton Law Firm which started in the 1980's. When medical issues arose in my family we contacted Thornton and immediately after Andy Wainwright contacted us. Throughout the whole process he was very professional and explained in step by step manner the legal process we were in and our plan of action. Andy has been at our side for the last 7 years and throughout that time he has always been there when we needed him not only as our lawyer but as a friend. We are very grateful for the Thornton Law Firm and especially Andy for all their hard work and dedication they have put into my family. We give them a 5 star rating!

We initially contacted the Thornton Law Firm via their website regarding a mesothelioma case. Immediately, we received a call from Attorney Andrew Wainwright and he made us feel comfortable during a difficult time. Throughout the process we were always well informed and things were always simply explained every step of the way. Mr. Wainwright was very courteous, kind & compassionate and felt like part of our family. All matters were always handled with the highest levels of professionalism. The settlements were processed and delivered in a timely manner. I highly recommend Andy Wainwright and the Thornton Law Firm. I give them a 5-star rating.

I 100% agree with Mel. I gave my banking account number and was told they'd be a deduction on the 1st and the 15th of each month. (which I agreed) The problem is I was never told how much those withdrawals would be. My husband is a disabled veteran and only gets a check once a month. We never even appeared in court. The opposing attorney was not contacting my attorney for 4+ months, yet my balance was never known by me and was growing somehow. It wasn't until I requested a statement that I received a few through email. I have never once spoken to Peter on the phone. Although the attorney who was working with me was very nice, he told me he had no part in the billing. He told me it was Peter. Basically, I gave a $4500 retainer in case we needed to go to court, which we never did, and I never received regular monthly statements from Mr. Calabrese. Due to my experience with the billing of this attorney, I would NEVER recommend them. This morning I see an email saying he will not represent me any longer because of my large outstanding balance (which I knew nothing about). As soon as I emailed him, all of a sudden I receive all these statements. Lol! And a balance that was insane. I agree with Mel. Do not sign any contract that involves giving your banking info out. This is not ethical and I intend on reporting to the Bar. These are examples of bad practices. People are already hurting in bad land situations, and the last thing anyone needs is to be taken advantage of. Beware people! Read Mel's review, and others on several sites before you use this firm. If you don't believe me, read others.

Although I wasn't able to hire him for his services, his insight to provide realistic and genuine advice on my situation has been so valuable! I was able to recover my yearly short term bonus upon his recommendation. On top of that, he reminded me to add some important non monetary benefits to my severance agreement. Justin is the best! I would 100% recommend him to anyone in this area for any unemployment issues!!!

What a Discrimination Lawyer Can Do for You

A discrimination lawyer specializes in handling cases where individuals or groups face unfair treatment based on protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. These lawyers assist clients in filing discrimination claims, representing them in legal proceedings, and ensuring that their rights under federal, state, and local laws are upheld. Discrimination cases may arise in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, or other settings.

Whether you’ve been discriminated against at work, denied housing, or treated unfairly in other areas of life, a discrimination lawyer can help you navigate the legal process and seek compensation or corrective action.

When Should I Hire a Discrimination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a discrimination lawyer in several situations where unfair treatment occurs based on protected characteristics. Common scenarios include:

  • Employment Discrimination:
    • Workplace discrimination: If you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or another protected status, a lawyer can help you file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or a similar state agency.
    • Wrongful termination: If you were fired due to discrimination or retaliation for reporting discriminatory behavior, a lawyer can assist with filing a lawsuit and seeking compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
    • Failure to promote: If you’ve been denied a promotion or opportunities due to discriminatory practices, a lawyer can investigate the claim and represent you in legal actions against your employer.
    • Harassment: If you’ve experienced workplace harassment, such as sexual harassment or a hostile work environment based on your race, gender, or other characteristics, a lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.
  • Housing Discrimination:
    • Denial of housing: If you’ve been denied housing due to your race, disability, family status, or other protected factors, a lawyer can help you file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or sue the landlord or property manager for violating the Fair Housing Act.
    • Unfair rental practices: If a landlord or property manager treats you unfairly based on discriminatory factors (e.g., refusing reasonable accommodations for a disability), a lawyer can help you enforce your rights.
  • Education Discrimination:
    • Discrimination in schools: If you or your child has faced discrimination in an educational setting based on race, disability, gender, or religion, a lawyer can help you file complaints under laws like Title VI, Title IX, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Public Accommodations:
    • Denial of services: If a business or public service has discriminated against you based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, a lawyer can assist you in filing a complaint or lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other anti-discrimination laws.

Hiring a discrimination lawyer early can help protect your rights and ensure that your claim is filed within legal deadlines.

What Does a Discrimination Lawyer Do?

A discrimination lawyer provides a range of legal services to help individuals and groups fight against discriminatory practices. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing discrimination claims: A lawyer can help you file a complaint with government agencies, such as the EEOC, HUD, or your state’s human rights commission. They ensure that your claim is properly documented and filed within required time limits.
  • Investigating discrimination claims: Discrimination lawyers gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review documents to build a strong case for proving discriminatory practices.
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, a lawyer can negotiate a settlement with the employer, landlord, or other party involved in the discrimination case, seeking compensation or corrective action without going to trial.
  • Representing clients in court: If your case goes to court, a lawyer will represent you during hearings, present evidence, and argue your case before a judge or jury.
  • Handling retaliation claims: If you face retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint or reporting discriminatory practices, a lawyer can help you pursue a retaliation claim.
  • Advising on legal rights: A discrimination lawyer explains your legal rights under federal and state anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and others.

How Are Discrimination Lawyers Paid?

Discrimination lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the expected duration of the legal process. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many discrimination lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee is usually a percentage of the settlement or court award, typically ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that don’t involve a contingency fee arrangement, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates for discrimination lawyers generally range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler legal tasks, such as drafting a discrimination complaint or providing legal advice, some lawyers may charge a flat fee.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some discrimination lawyers offer pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services, especially in cases involving low-income clients or significant civil rights issues.

It’s important to discuss fee arrangements during your initial consultation to ensure that you understand the total cost of legal services and how payment will be handled.

How Much Does a Discrimination Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a discrimination lawyer depends on factors like the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the potential for a settlement or trial. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, their fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of any settlement or court award. For example, if you win a settlement of $50,000 and the lawyer’s fee is 30%, they would receive $15,000, and you would keep the remaining $35,000.
  • Hourly rates: Discrimination lawyers who charge by the hour typically bill between $200 and $600 per hour. For example, a case that takes 20 hours of legal work at $300 per hour would cost $6,000 in legal fees.
  • Flat fees: Some legal services, such as filing a discrimination complaint or providing a legal consultation, may be available for a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale fees: In some cases, particularly for low-income individuals, lawyers may offer reduced fees or work pro bono.

Always ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation, and clarify whether the lawyer offers flexible payment options.

Top Questions to Ask a Discrimination Lawyer

Before hiring a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and qualifications to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with discrimination cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled discrimination cases similar to yours, whether it involves employment, housing, or public accommodation discrimination.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs.
  3. What are my chances of success?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and the likelihood of success.
  4. How long will the process take?
Discrimination cases can take time to resolve, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take, from filing a complaint to reaching a settlement or going to trial.
  5. Will I need to go to court?
Ask whether your case is likely to settle out of court or if a trial may be necessary. If a trial is possible, ask what steps the lawyer will take to prepare.
  6. What damages or remedies can I seek?
Ask about the types of compensation or corrective action you can pursue, such as back pay, emotional distress damages, job reinstatement, or policy changes.
  7. What steps should I take to protect my rights?
Ask for advice on how to document evidence, handle workplace or housing interactions, and avoid retaliation while your case is pending.

How to Check the Credibility of a Discrimination Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable discrimination lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and in good standing with the state bar association. You can check this on your state bar’s website.
  • Look for discrimination case experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in employment law, civil rights, or discrimination cases and have successfully handled similar cases in the past.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on discrimination matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in civil rights organizations or employment law associations, such as the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed account of the discrimination: Provide a clear description of the discriminatory actions, including dates, locations, and individuals involved. Document specific incidents and any witnesses who can support your claim.
  • Workplace or housing records: Bring copies of relevant employment or housing documents, such as job performance evaluations, rental agreements, emails, or written correspondence related to the discrimination.
  • Company or organization policies: If the discrimination occurred in the workplace or housing, bring copies of company policies, employee handbooks, or housing agreements that outline anti-discrimination policies.
  • Evidence of damages: Provide evidence of any financial losses, such as lost wages, job termination, or increased rent, as well as emotional or psychological distress caused by the discrimination.
  • Previous complaints or actions: If you’ve filed previous complaints or taken any action related to the discrimination, such as reporting the issue to HR or filing a complaint with a government agency, bring copies of those documents.
  • Questions about the process: Prepare a list of questions about your legal options, potential outcomes, and the lawyer’s approach to handling your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for pursuing your discrimination claim.
