I am very grateful to Attorney Brianna Williams for the immediate and thorough assistance offered during a pre-legal event that I recently navigated through. She replied quickly to me when I randomly contacted her during this emergency, and she listened attentively to my issue. Her professionalism and real concern for my problem, were apparent and the tailored recommendations she suggested were very helpful as I was getting ready to go to a judge’s chamber on the same day. Pro bono consultation is not easy to find, especially for complex situations, such as the one I was experiencing. I’m grateful for her kindness and assistance. I truly appreciate her patience and support, and I will follow up to share how things turned out. Thank you, Attorney Williams, for making a difference in my life!

Oh my God! Never in my wildest dream did I ever think I would need a lawyer, but I am blessed to have Mr. Orlando as a friend, who was able to get Mr Scott (my lawyer) to reach out to me ASAP. Being on workman comp really blew through my savings. The firm was very interested in my case and encouraging. When the settlement finally came in, I was satisfied, but my lawyer wasn't. He said, "That's not enough for what you went through, let me see if I can get maybe 5K more for you". Well he did better than that, he got me 12K more! The check cleared and I'm hoping to never need a lawyer again, but if I do this firm will/is my only choice.

I got one of those advertised divorces that initially was going to cost me $500 and turned out to cost me $2500 in 2012. We had been separated for 7 years. I was in a bad state. I signed an agreement, drafted and reviewed by a 'cheap' attorney and today I am paying $11,500 in alimony and child support for 20 years. I was referred to Cary King. One look at the settlement agreement and he told me that in his 30+ years of Family Law practice, he had never seen a settlement agreement so one-sided, atrocious, unfavorable and not doable (based on my income then and now). My income then, nor my income today, justifies the unreasonable alimony I signed up for. If you are seeking a divorce attorney, trust me.. Have Cary King on your side. His thorough knowledge of Fanily Practice Law is undeniable and you will experience his tenacity for Justice and Fairness as it pertains to your particular case during the initial consult. I am paying him today and I wish had sought him out when I was going through my tribulations that led to my divorce and insane settlement agreement.

I've never won anything from a radio station and I had been navigating a rough patch in life. One day while Dashing I was listening to Majic and heard that Amy was giving away money for the new year. I'm like could it be a sign? I went ahead and explained what I could do with money like they asked and gave it to God. I was leaving an interview from getting a new job and moments later got the call that I won!!!! It still doesn't seem real to me. I'm very thankful for Amy and whenever it's time to get the prize I hope that I can thank you in person. Well, I was very happy about the prize. But, now I feel like I haven't won anything and that I'm hassling people about something that they said they chose me for. Nobody has contacted me to tell me the next steps. The initial call and the video went well, but, now I'm getting silence. It's been 5 days so I guess I'll just wait. I got really excited because I really did need the money and I just knew that this was from God. I still had to rob Peter to pay Paul. If God is willing hopefully I hear something soon.

We had to hire counsel to pursue correction of numerous USERRA errors with husband’s federal retirement, but finding a lawyer who was willing to work hourly against the federal government was not easy! Pines was the only agency with the willingness and immediate availability to work with us. The attorney assigned (M. Kleinman) has been knowledgeable, accessible, and PATIENT. We buried him under a mountain of documents and regulations, but he was very skillful at knowing which pieces were most relevant to the case, keeping us focused on the big picture. Very grateful, and highly recommend!

Unfortunately I cannot speak highly of Attorney Jerome. I have a hard time getting a hold of him. I would leave voicemails and email him only to not get any responses. He sent me some paperwork days after they were due. No apologies. I showed up for a calendar call today. He never showed. Another client of Serge Gerome is here right now too. I found out from her that he's in Douglasville for another trial. So why was I not made aware of this? Even the judge didn't know. So unprofessional.

I would highly recommend Tonya Shy and the TS Law Firm to my family and friends. They work hard to give each client high-quality legal services and the personal attention they deserve. Attorney Shy was very honest from the beginning of my case. She and her staff always kept me in the loop of everything throughout my case. She showed me that there are still great attorneys out here that have your best interest. I’m so thankful to God that he directed me to her.

My name is Antonio Rogers and it is a honor to write this review for Attorney Tonya Shy who represented me. I'm from Louisiana and while visiting family I was involved in a auto accident where I was rear ended by another motorist and I was injured. I did my research on attorneys in Atlanta and after reading the positive reviews I selected Attorney Shy to handle my case. Throughout the entire process Attorney Shy and her team kept me well informed. Being a former claims adjuster and retired law-enforcement office I knew that attorney Shy was very knowledgeable and the right attorney to represent me. She was at all time very patient but diligent regarding my auto accident case. Attorney Shy and her team made me feel like family and she settled my claim and I was very satisfied with the outcome. I highly recommend Attorney Shy to anyone that needs representation because she is simply the best. Thank You Attorney Shy for all you do.

I had a very hard case and Mrs. Hipes and her team were on top of it all. She understood my case and her team made it much easier as I was going through a very long process. She even gave her options on wording and advise on what her thoughts were and made me feel important and heard. My case would have never been solved WITHOUT the professional, compassionate and legal minds of herself and her staff. This is the attorney and staff you want behind you when you feel you can't fight for yourself. I thank you Mrs. Hipes and your great people for helping me when I thought there was no end in sight. Mrs. Hipes dug right into my case. She quickly understood all the details and worked tirelessly to help me find a win. Prompt responses, carefully articulated, and with deep knowledge of the law. I could not have worked with a more kind, professional, and responsive person. As wonderful as she was to me, she was however very tough on the defendant; relentless to ensure they understood what truly happened to me, uncover the truth, and find resolution. I would absolutely recommend Mrs. Hipes for your case.

I recently experienced age-related discrimination that led to a mental breakdown. I was placed on short -term disability and now I am transitioning to long-term disability. During this challenging period, I found out I would lose my job. Despite reaching out to other law firms and being turned down without explanation, I consulted with Mr. Clifford Weiss. In a brief 5 to 10-minute consultation, Mr. Weiss clearly explained why I did not have a case and offered helpful suggestions for my next steps after my employment ends. He did not charge me for this consultation. Thanks to Mr. Weiss's advice, I now have a more hopeful outlook. I am deeply grateful for his counsel and wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Weiss as a wrongful termination and discrimination attorney.

Robyn is a great lawyer and super personal. I had to acquire her service to help fight for custody of my only son. For a long 18 months, she communicated and explained every question or concern I had throughout the process. she was very professional and transparent throughout every step by sharing email exchanges of the negotiation for custody of my two-year-old son. In the end, she did the impossible by settling my case with 50/50 physical custody because we live in the south and family court is one-sided. Listen, lawyers are expensive, but it was worth it in the long run because now I no longer have to pay child support, and claim child tax credit every other year. Now, this doesn’t mean it will work for everyone, but she will advise you on the do’s and don’t, to help build your case. There's hope for good fathers that want to be a part of their kid's life and Robyn will be a solid asset to your fight.

I came to Hoffer & Webb to handle my divorce. I was scared out of my mind because my life was changing before my eyes but Robyn Webb took over the situation for me and kept me informed every step of the way. And when I got in a car wreck, Hoffer & Webb was there for me, too! Michael Hoffer handled everything, and pushed the insurance company to offer more than I thought they would! I appreciate everything these wonderful ppl have done for me, I’d be in a bad place without them. Give them a shot at taking care of your legal issues. You won’t be disappointed!

I can't say enough about my positive experience with Robyn and her staff. My case was very complicated with many financial details. I was told many times by other attorneys that my case would not end in my favor. I felt that my situation was hopeless. Only until I met Robyn did I feel that I was getting heard. She listened carefully with compassion and wanted to understand the details of my case. She actually cares. I have the upmost respect and gratitude for her. I absolutely listened to any advice she gave me and got her the information she needed to help me. I understood very early in meeting her that she means business and that she would always act in my best interest. Truly amazing. I can't thank her enough for helping me get through such a difficult time in my life. By far, THE best attorney.

Fakiha's knowledge, courtroom abilities and pre-trial preparation helped me get kids custody as well as a just and equitable division. She was instrumental in being able to communicate to the court my side of the story with facts and witnesses where required. There are no winners in family court but she did a great job in representing and fighting my case. Anyone going through a difficult time can always connect with Fakiha and get consultation and make a decision on their own to retain her services. I can highly recommend her based on my experience.

I retained Ms. Fakiha Khans legal services earlier this year. My sister was going through a very difficult divorce with her ex who was extremely conniving and abusive during the marriage. We had changed several attorneys , and the case had still not been finalized in 3 years! I lived in another state, my parents lived over seas, and my poor sister was left all alone to deal with this bad situation. Being a single mom with two little ones, she was thousands of dollars into attorney fees, not to mention the aggravation of dealing with the court system. Overwhelmed and disappointed, she did not know where to turn to when our last attorney started asking for more money. A lady at the salon my sister went to recommended Fakiha Khan. The lady had gone through a similar experience with a controlling ex. We spoke to Fakiha on the phone, and immediately retained her services. It was the best decision we made!! Let me start by saying , Fakiha Khan is an amazing human being! She's has been there to guide us and advise in every step of the way. She has made herself available to listen to us and help us every time we've. needed her. This is a quality we have have been unable to find in any other attorney we have dealt with in the past. During our court trial, Fakiha was a shark! She was so well prepared, articulate, to the point, made sure she addressed all the issues important to us, and with minimal words and perfect examples was able to portray my sisters ex as he was. She also put up with no bullshit from the opposing attorney. And of course we won the case! Trust me when I tell you, she is fantastic! I expect for my sisters ex to create problems for her in the future, but I also know who I will be calling up when that time comes. Fakiha, thank you for all you have done for us! My sister and our family are very grateful to you. Whoever is reading this review, i guarantee you will be not be disappointed. I know this is a very long review, but I can't put into words how blessed and grateful we feel to have found someone as smart, kind and compassionate as Fakiha.

Ms Khan is intelligent, knowledgeable and extremely efficient. She grasps the situation at hand quick and delivers. She has also represented me at court and did an amazing job in winning my case. She dealt with tact and being a bull dog of an attorney, which I required her to be at the same! Time again & again, she has impressed with her outstanding compassion and kindness! She is an asset to her firm and I’m so happy I have her to represent me!!

Paul is honest, hard-working, and smart. We found him to be very knowledgeable about the process of fighting in the North Georgia District for Long Term Disability Benefits under ERISA. My husband suffers from an unusual and misunderstood illness but has objective evidence of his disabilities (not just self-reported symptoms). Paul wrote a series of excellent briefs for our case, which resulted in a big win, including attorney's fees paid for us by the insurance company! In addition, our case was "published" so that other attorneys will be able to cite it as court precedent.

I had been working for the VA for nine years, and I had always been great at my job. Then I was assigned a new supervisor, and suddenly I was terrible at my job. This supervisor was setting me up to fail, and I was facing losing the job that I love, and the job that I am great at because of him. I brought on Melville Johnson, P.C., and soon after they submitted the discovery requests the VA rescinded my termination. At first I was happy to have my job back, but after two months they still hadn’t paid me. When I explained the situation to Mr. Durishan, he contacted the Judge and I received my paycheck at the end of the week. It was an expensive process, but it was worth it.

I had worked for the federal government for thirteen years, and as I got older my supervisors tried to force me out of my job in order to replace me with a younger employee. They increased my workload and placed unreasonable deadlines in order to set me up for failure. They claimed that they were doing this because they were not able to hire new employees to replace the one who had left, but I was the only one who’s work was increased. This had a detrimental effect on my health and disability, and I was no longer able to work. With the help of Melville Johnson, P.C. and Mr. Durishan I was able to take my constructive termination case to the Merit System Protection Board, and we were able to settle my appeal. They kept me in the loop every step of the way, and took the time to make sure that I understood what to expect. While I would have liked a larger settlement, the team at Melville Johnson, P.C. got the government up to their highest offer and I am glad I chose them. 4/5 stars.

What a Discrimination Lawyer Can Do for You

A discrimination lawyer specializes in handling cases where individuals or groups face unfair treatment based on protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. These lawyers assist clients in filing discrimination claims, representing them in legal proceedings, and ensuring that their rights under federal, state, and local laws are upheld. Discrimination cases may arise in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, or other settings.

Whether you’ve been discriminated against at work, denied housing, or treated unfairly in other areas of life, a discrimination lawyer can help you navigate the legal process and seek compensation or corrective action.

When Should I Hire a Discrimination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a discrimination lawyer in several situations where unfair treatment occurs based on protected characteristics. Common scenarios include:

  • Employment Discrimination:
    • Workplace discrimination: If you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or another protected status, a lawyer can help you file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or a similar state agency.
    • Wrongful termination: If you were fired due to discrimination or retaliation for reporting discriminatory behavior, a lawyer can assist with filing a lawsuit and seeking compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
    • Failure to promote: If you’ve been denied a promotion or opportunities due to discriminatory practices, a lawyer can investigate the claim and represent you in legal actions against your employer.
    • Harassment: If you’ve experienced workplace harassment, such as sexual harassment or a hostile work environment based on your race, gender, or other characteristics, a lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.
  • Housing Discrimination:
    • Denial of housing: If you’ve been denied housing due to your race, disability, family status, or other protected factors, a lawyer can help you file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or sue the landlord or property manager for violating the Fair Housing Act.
    • Unfair rental practices: If a landlord or property manager treats you unfairly based on discriminatory factors (e.g., refusing reasonable accommodations for a disability), a lawyer can help you enforce your rights.
  • Education Discrimination:
    • Discrimination in schools: If you or your child has faced discrimination in an educational setting based on race, disability, gender, or religion, a lawyer can help you file complaints under laws like Title VI, Title IX, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Public Accommodations:
    • Denial of services: If a business or public service has discriminated against you based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, a lawyer can assist you in filing a complaint or lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other anti-discrimination laws.

Hiring a discrimination lawyer early can help protect your rights and ensure that your claim is filed within legal deadlines.

What Does a Discrimination Lawyer Do?

A discrimination lawyer provides a range of legal services to help individuals and groups fight against discriminatory practices. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing discrimination claims: A lawyer can help you file a complaint with government agencies, such as the EEOC, HUD, or your state’s human rights commission. They ensure that your claim is properly documented and filed within required time limits.
  • Investigating discrimination claims: Discrimination lawyers gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review documents to build a strong case for proving discriminatory practices.
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, a lawyer can negotiate a settlement with the employer, landlord, or other party involved in the discrimination case, seeking compensation or corrective action without going to trial.
  • Representing clients in court: If your case goes to court, a lawyer will represent you during hearings, present evidence, and argue your case before a judge or jury.
  • Handling retaliation claims: If you face retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint or reporting discriminatory practices, a lawyer can help you pursue a retaliation claim.
  • Advising on legal rights: A discrimination lawyer explains your legal rights under federal and state anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and others.

How Are Discrimination Lawyers Paid?

Discrimination lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the expected duration of the legal process. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many discrimination lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee is usually a percentage of the settlement or court award, typically ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that don’t involve a contingency fee arrangement, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates for discrimination lawyers generally range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler legal tasks, such as drafting a discrimination complaint or providing legal advice, some lawyers may charge a flat fee.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some discrimination lawyers offer pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services, especially in cases involving low-income clients or significant civil rights issues.

It’s important to discuss fee arrangements during your initial consultation to ensure that you understand the total cost of legal services and how payment will be handled.

How Much Does a Discrimination Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a discrimination lawyer depends on factors like the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the potential for a settlement or trial. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, their fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of any settlement or court award. For example, if you win a settlement of $50,000 and the lawyer’s fee is 30%, they would receive $15,000, and you would keep the remaining $35,000.
  • Hourly rates: Discrimination lawyers who charge by the hour typically bill between $200 and $600 per hour. For example, a case that takes 20 hours of legal work at $300 per hour would cost $6,000 in legal fees.
  • Flat fees: Some legal services, such as filing a discrimination complaint or providing a legal consultation, may be available for a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale fees: In some cases, particularly for low-income individuals, lawyers may offer reduced fees or work pro bono.

Always ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation, and clarify whether the lawyer offers flexible payment options.

Top Questions to Ask a Discrimination Lawyer

Before hiring a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and qualifications to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with discrimination cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled discrimination cases similar to yours, whether it involves employment, housing, or public accommodation discrimination.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs.
  3. What are my chances of success?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and the likelihood of success.
  4. How long will the process take?
Discrimination cases can take time to resolve, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take, from filing a complaint to reaching a settlement or going to trial.
  5. Will I need to go to court?
Ask whether your case is likely to settle out of court or if a trial may be necessary. If a trial is possible, ask what steps the lawyer will take to prepare.
  6. What damages or remedies can I seek?
Ask about the types of compensation or corrective action you can pursue, such as back pay, emotional distress damages, job reinstatement, or policy changes.
  7. What steps should I take to protect my rights?
Ask for advice on how to document evidence, handle workplace or housing interactions, and avoid retaliation while your case is pending.

How to Check the Credibility of a Discrimination Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable discrimination lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and in good standing with the state bar association. You can check this on your state bar’s website.
  • Look for discrimination case experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in employment law, civil rights, or discrimination cases and have successfully handled similar cases in the past.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on discrimination matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in civil rights organizations or employment law associations, such as the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed account of the discrimination: Provide a clear description of the discriminatory actions, including dates, locations, and individuals involved. Document specific incidents and any witnesses who can support your claim.
  • Workplace or housing records: Bring copies of relevant employment or housing documents, such as job performance evaluations, rental agreements, emails, or written correspondence related to the discrimination.
  • Company or organization policies: If the discrimination occurred in the workplace or housing, bring copies of company policies, employee handbooks, or housing agreements that outline anti-discrimination policies.
  • Evidence of damages: Provide evidence of any financial losses, such as lost wages, job termination, or increased rent, as well as emotional or psychological distress caused by the discrimination.
  • Previous complaints or actions: If you’ve filed previous complaints or taken any action related to the discrimination, such as reporting the issue to HR or filing a complaint with a government agency, bring copies of those documents.
  • Questions about the process: Prepare a list of questions about your legal options, potential outcomes, and the lawyer’s approach to handling your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for pursuing your discrimination claim.
